Post Up: Blazers Blast Cats

And congrats go out to Kobe.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Kobe Bryant becoming the Lakers all-time scoring leader, scoring 44 to pass #44, in Memphis and then coming up short against the Grizzlies. Pretty sure that’s not how he say that game going. Giving up the ball to Ron Artest for the final shot wasn’t how I saw that going down.

Props to the freaking Grizz. They fought hard, they played tough and it was awesome to watch Marc go up against his older bro. It was also great to see Zach Randolph put in another solid performance, scoring 22 points to go with 18 rebounds. Mayo going up against Kobe was also fun, thinking of how one grew up watching Kobe and the other was praising Mayo’s work ethic when he was here in Tronto last week.

Great, great win for the Grizz. Rudy Gay’s three was a beautiful shot in front of the Lakers bench. Lester Hudson reaching a career-high in just 6:06 seconds of playing time was awesome, too.

I feel like Kobe’s hit a ton of milestones this season and it’s not even the All-Star break.

In Washington, Tough Juice, Nick Young and the Wizards hung with the Celtics… for awhile. In the fourth things kinda fell apart offensively as they scored just 10 points in the quarter, allowing Boston to break away and getthe 99-88 victory. Rajon Rondo had 17 points and 12 assists, KG scored 19 and Ray Allen added 17 as well. Caron was solid for the Wiz with 20 and 11 as Antawn Jamison struggled mightily from the floor, scoring just eight points on 2-for-17 fgs.

The Milwaukee Bucks took down the Heat for the second time in a week,  defeating Miami 97-81, despite opening the game by missing their first 10 shots. Dwyane Wade had 23 points and six assists in the game, but shot just 7-for-19 from the floor. The Heat as a team shot just 36 percent. Andrew Bogut had the efficient kind of line that I love so much. The guy scored 22 points on 10-for-13 field goals to go with 11 rebounds. Carlos Delfino added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks while Eastern Conference rookie of the month, Brandon Jennings had just nine points but eight assists.

In New Orleans, Steve Nash played through an abdominal strain to lead the Suns to the 109-100 victory. Darren Collison continued to kill it as he steps in for Chris Paul, but the Hornets were unable to overcome a second quarter where they were outscored 29-15 by the Suns. Nash finished with 18 points and 12 assists, but the Hornets rookie had his second straight double-double with 16 points and 14 assists. Fellow rookie Marcus Thornton scored 25 points, but it wasnt’ enough to overcome 25 from Amar’e and 20 off of the bench from Channing Frye.

In Denver without Melo once again, Arron Afflalo continued to impress in a 112-109 OT victory. Down 17 in the third quarter, the Nuggets stormed back against the Kings and in the extra session, it was Afflalo who hit a jumper with 18.4 seconds remaining to give the Nuggets the lead and the game. Spencer Hawes had 23 points and 7 rebounds while Kevin Martin added 22. Kenyon Martin led the Nuggets with 24 points and 12 boards, Chauncey Billups added 23 points and nine assists and Afflalo scored 12 points, none bigger than his final two of the night.

In Utah, the Jazz and Mavs had a close game until the fourth when Dallas kind of fell apart and Utah jumped on them, creating turnovers and getting second chance opportunities, crashing the offensive glass. They also outscored the Mavs 27-16 in the final quarter to pull away down the stretch and get the 104-92 victory. Deron Williams had 18 points, seven rebounds and 15 assists to leave Utah. Paul Millsap scored 25 points and grabbed nine boards and CJ Miles added 17 points off of the bench. Dirk had 28 points for the Mavs while Jason Terry added 19 points to go with eight assists in the loss.

In Portland, awesomeness was in full effect, despite Stephen Jackson and the Bobcats losing, 98-79. Yes, it was a blowout, but it was still fun. Batum had 15 points and nine boards. Andre Miller had eight points (not quite 52, hey?) and nine assists. LaMarcus had 17 and Jerryd Bayless scored 15. Patty Mills even got into the game at the end! That made me happy. For the Bobcats, Stack Jack had 23 points and Gerald Wallace added 17 and 10 rebounds.

Man, the Blazers are just a fun team to watch. I love the Bobcats, but Portland just feels right. Especially at home. Their fans may be taking over Oracle’s for my favorite in the league.

I still can’t believe the Lakers lost to Memphis. I wasn’t expecting that. I also don’t see Kobe having the patience with his teammates to give up the final shot in another situation like that. Agh. That one made me feel torn. I was happy for the Grizz, but wanted Kobe to have a W for his big milestone.

Where do you all have Kobe on the vaunted all-time Lakers list? I say passing West in scoring combined with having 3 more rings than him, he has to be ahead of the logo. As far as Earvin and Cap, it’s a little more unclear. Although, if he can win at least one more championship he can certainly still end his career as the greatest laker ever and a top 5 player ever. Thoughts?

I need a hand with something. I just read an article on yahoo about Lebron james. And it said “no one in history has ever shot 50 percent from the floor, with one blocked shot like Bron is doing this season” … obviously that is a misprint, right? lol

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Well I’d rather Kobe had 47 and the W than pass up the game winner to Ron. Wtf.

  • jumpman3224

@James the balla…a lot of players have done that. Basically any relevant big man does that year in and year out. Hakeem the Dream did it 14 times.

  • webstarr

The Jazz are quietly climbing into third place in the west. But pay no attention. We better stick to the topics of Kobe or Lebron…don’t want to break trend

  • T-Money

Caron Butler doesn’t deserve a nickname anymore. Did anybody watch that sequence at the end of the 2nd where Kob got ”fouled” on three consecutive fade aways? The Grizz players all had a smirk on their face like ”can we even breathe on him”?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Thanks Webstarr!!
I didn’t get to see the lakers game last night. But it sucked they lost. And now some beef between him and Pau… well not beef, but you know what I mean. The Lakers need to get in check!!

  • jumpman3224

How scary good does Denver look by being able to win sans Melo lately?

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Miami, Dywane Wade is not walking through that door.

  • http://www.behindtheb.blogspot.com Sam Raphael Chadwick

Kobe had a bad game just sometimes he just decides to keep it for himself hes been a better team mates lately but last nights game was not one of his best appart from the points

  • webstarr

    damn you james

  • webstarr

It’s true Denver looks scary, probably the only team that has any chance of getting through the Lakers in the finals. Well, and potentially the Jazz

  • webstarr

    *only team in the west

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

it didnt turn into a blowout until the end, after the reserves were put in. But congrats to the Blazers, they commanded the way the game was played.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Webstarr, no need to get arrogant, just calm down.
BET with a rare appearance… or should I say rear, I heard he likes that way a lot better.
Man this site has been boring this past week.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Dwayne Wade is already looking for condos in Chicago or New York.
Ain’t no way he’s wasting his prime with that team.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Seriously back to back blowouts by the bucks? Gtfoh. Wade has been mentally checked out all year. Its a shame too because he’s still putting up 27 and 6.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Yeah … Wade is gone. So Miami… I guess it’s time to start building around O’Neal?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

mister BETCATS, just so you undertand!! no im joking, i like your team and the way they play defense, Crash is unbealiveble( actually our amazing GM Kevin Pritchard tried LOTS of times trading for G-Wallace), Jordan was smart not to bite, remember that game saving block on OJMayo few weeks ago?, there´s not more that 5 guys who can do that in the A…NIC BATUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now thats some DEFENSE, and improved offense..LaMarcus- get me 10 boards a game, we all know scoring is no problem to ya… Jazz are rolling, AK47 starting and improved play has somthing to do with that.

1000 games… I wonder where he is on the list for most regular season games played and playoff games …

  • LA Huey

It’s been fun watching the Cats and Grizz become relevant this season.

  • webstarr

James I’m just kidding. Tone apparently doesn’t come through in writing. But I do think if the Jazz can get anywhere near second place in the west, Sloan must once again be looked at seriously as a potential COTY

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

I hope OKC make the playoffs.

  • LA Huey

webstarr, I hope Sloan never gets the award. Because winning it usually means you’ll lose your job in the next 2-3 years.

  • webstarr

True Huey but the Miller family is afraid of Sloan so they’ll never get rid of him

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers, i dont really get your point. No slay- but what country are you from? SLAM has a lot of commentors from other countries that do not have english as their first language. We even have commentors from countries that do have english as their first language that dont know how to write it very well (i was once one of them).

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

James that was quite a comment you had their at 10:48. All im going to say, in the spirit of Teddy Rosevelt is “Bully, old chap! Bully!”

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

(sorry for the Rosevelt reference, Night at the Museum was on tv and since i dont have school and it is miserable outside, i watched it)

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

my point is a litle bit of trash talk and then some love for the BobCats, cause our teams played yesterday. then praise Batum´s game and then tell LaMarcus Aldridge he better get at least 10 fu(king boards a game if he wants to be an all-star! is my english that bad Betcats?

  • T-Money

betcats: google sporting lisbon and you’ll have a good idea of where he’s from.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

so, is it a done deal, dwade is going to chicago? seems that way, but they still need a post player.

  • Johnson

  • allison

    @ James the balla
“no one in history has ever shot 50 percent from the floor, with one blocked shot like Bron is doing this season” <– I think they meant that in addition to the other stats quoted earlier in the article, something like 28, 8, 8, .500, 1 blk
