Post Up: Mavs take Lakers

And the Thunder had a rough night.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Okay, okay, gotta be quick tonight. I was at the arena for almost nine hours for the game tonight and I’ve got prac in the a.m.  so I want to try to get some sleep before 3 a.m. tonight. I went to the arena super early last night and it paid off. Got to sit down for a convo with my favorite assistant coach in the league last night, so that was fun. Now to transcribe the mammoth file, eeek.

Anyway, the Blazers got a big win on the second night of a back-to-back against the Raptors, winning 101-87. After the Raps had topped 100 points in 20 straight contests, Portland broke their streak and got the W. With 20 points from Brandon Roy and 18 points, 10 assists from Andre Miller, the Blazers built a 17-point lead in the first half, and without Chris Bosh, the Raptors were unable to come back in the second, despite Hedo Turkoglu’s 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting and another strong effort from Jarrett Jack.

The Grizzlies used a 13-2 run and 10 fourth quarter points from OJ Mayo to take the 99-94 victory over the poor Wizards. I don’t think I’ve yet recovered from the news of Josh Howard’s torn acl. My heart sank when they notified me after Raps practice and two days later, it still sinks to think about it. For Memphis, the trio of Zach Randolph, Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol each topped 20. Andray Blatche continued his strong play since the trades, scoring 24 points while Al Thornton added 16 and 11 in the loss.

In disappointing news, the Thunder lost against tonight and Kevin Durant’s streak of topping 25 points stopped at 29. Against the Spurs, OKC fell, 95-87 and KD was held to 21 points on 19 field goal attempts. My pg Russ Westbrook struggled, shooting just 6-for-21 from the floor for his 17 points. The Thunder shot just 39 percent as a team while giving up a 19-point, 15-rebound, six-assist night from Tim Duncan and 26 points off of the bench from Manu.

I didn’t catch any of the Lakers/Mavs game, but looks like Lakers fans are not impressed. Lots of mean things being said about Pau on Twitter. Can’t really comment because I didn’t see any of it, but yeah, the boxscore says, Dallas took the game, 101-96 and that Pau was quiet, with 11 points and six boards. Oops. One night after Kobe had a great shooting night, he went 9-for-23 from the floor for his 20 points while Dirk was huge for the Mavs, scoring 31 points on 10-for-19 points to go with nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Jason Terry also added 30 off of the bench.

In Phoenix, Steve Nash came back from a game off to score 20 points and dish 13 assists as he lead the Suns to a 106-95 victory over the Sixers. The Suns shot 51 percent for the game and had five players reach double-figures.

The Bucks took down the Hornets 115-85, despite 25 from Marcus Thornton off of the bench and 22 points and nine assists from Darren Collison in the loss. Quick question: What are the Hornets going to do with Collison when Chris Paul comes back? Do they really want him sitting on the bench? I mean, you’ve got to play Chris, but Collison needs minutes so he can continue to develop. Andrew Bogut had 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks.

30 and 16 for Dwight Howard in an Orlando win over the Rockets. 110-92 was the score and doesn’t it just seem like out of nowhere, Dwight is back to posting huge numbers? It’s about damn time. Happy to see it.

Okay, fill in the gaps for me. Can’t believe it’s Thursday already. Boston/Cleveland tonight is going to be a good one. Can’t wait to settle in and watch that one. Also looking forward to seeing the Cavs on Friday night, here in Toronto. It would be nice if Chris Bosh was healthy to play, but we’ll see.

Obviously, the nickname, Mr. Consitency In The Clutch, will never be attached to Kobe. Nice work, Bean.

  • http://Slamadamonth.com Mvp23100

Kobe going 1 on 5 getting his shot blocked was a sight to see Pau was fine when mr clutch was out he had an efficient game vs mem but we seen the real kobe tonite

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

No, No, No…let me stop…he must have scored 50 last night, I had to have been halucinating. I WILL say that the Lakers in two games with BeanBoy back in the mix, look to have a long road to go before they are considered the favorites in THE WEST, let alone the entire league, their offense is horrible and the Mavs won that game without Caron in the lineup. If the Lakers hit the Thunder, Mavs and Nuggets in their playoff series (if they get through the first two rounds) they won’t be coming out of the West. Another set of teams, yes, they still have a good shot, but those three? They seem to own Utah, the Spurs are too inconsistent, the Rockets aren’t big enough and the Suns….yeah, ok. Those teams are their favorable ones….Lakers fans better keep their fingers crossed.

  • http://Slamadamonth.com Mvp23100

You think without 24 playing superman these our losses vs mem mil mia sac besides bos these are trash teams add that to the fact la is under 500 vs the big boys and they got killed by the other top 2 elite teams cle and denver

  • http://www.Twitter/notebooknick NotebookNick

I agree with Eboy. This year’s playoffs will be about how teams match up. Boston fans have the same nightmares about Atlanta. And it’s amazing that KD’s streak “ended” and he still scored 21. Just saying.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

    Ship his as* out.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Be smug all youwant, B, dude sucked last night. He’s been sucking way more often than he EVER has in his career on varying nights. You can spin that dopey sh*t any way you want, though. The rest of your flock will follow the yellow and purple lights regardless. I liked you a ton better when you were just a Knicks fan.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

ah, the difference in the perception of a player that one made or missed shot makes…

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    His as*, ship it out.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Im happy Okc lost actually. Manu Ginobili just met Durant at the rim! fantastic game changing block in crunch time! Why is bad news Okc losing Holly? fu(k, they have a great young core of guys but that franshise was stolen from Seatle and I hate that sh1t! and Nowitzky was unstopable in those isos..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I like the response’s from the flock. Stupidity never ceases.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

ass. see, guys? it’s alright to say ass.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Out ship his as* it …..

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

So on a more serious note, DIRK!!!! Damn, Mavs had a 7 point lead with 1.37 to go, then +3 a min. later, my poor heart. Thank gawd for Jason Terry, that was probably his best performance of the season. Fact that Dallas won with Mr. Goatbeard as their starting SG made me feel even better about the game. Ciban was onto something with this deal. DIRK!!

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

    One more thing: JIGGAMAN!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I liked when Dirk took the Mamba Elbow, made the shot, took the foul and threw his hands into the air as if to say “suck it, snake boy!”

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

dont start the kobe hate/love or kobVSbron sh1t, unless its something funny..also, D12 dominant as ever and Nash had a 20,13ass on 8/9 shooting in 29 minutes, fantastic..TrailBlazers in da house!!! HUGE win in Toronto, The Natural,Dre Miller leading the way, if they can understand each other thats one of the best 3 backcourts in the L right there, with J-Bayless and Fernandez off the pine, also both played great yesterday, now Camby get back dude, we need ya to rebound and swat shots!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    Dirk’s postgame interview was great!
Mavs looked really solid, especially late when they were able to actually run their sets and get buckets, instead of isolating, or just running ineffective pick n rolls. Important to see that heading into the playoffs.
PS – Hibachi is coming back stronger, and better than ever. Click my name (or DP’s, Collins, Moose’s) and holla at us!

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Andy Bogut, putting in work this Feb, very nice. And now Bucks are in the Playoff picture. Bucks, Bobcats, Grizzlies, Thunder, all with good chances to make the ostseason. What is this, bizarro-nba?

  • The D Train

As I’ve said before, no one will believe in the Mavs unless they win it all. The Miami and GS series’ prove that. That being said, they looked pretty nice last night, although Kobe on a back-to-back after not playing a couple of weeks gave them a nice little advantage. I was pretty jazzed to watch Butler, so kind of disappointed he didn’t run, but I love me some Dirk, baby. Looks like the Haywood Jablowme pickup might pay nice dividends. I forgot, or more appropriately never knew, how good Dallas could look with a real center. He’s not a star, but he might make a ‘UGE difference for their interior D. Having Caron and Matrix chasing Kobe around for 4-7 games would be pretty fun to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Most underrated part of the Mavs deal was Brendan Haywood. Dude hits the glass hard every game, blocks shots, and will catch and finish passes from JKidd all night.
Dirk is straight nasty on the elbow. I got mad respect for how he dealt with getting bodied up by the Warriors that one serious, and learned how to deal with it and still get his shot off. Now, I’ll never be a true fan of a seven-footer who is basically a jumpshooter, but Dirk is the best at playing that game. His mid range is like most players’ layups.
I was shocked to see the Spurs win that game because they’ve looked old and tired lately. Why don’t people notice how inconsistent Manu is, and how often he’s injured?

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Did you even see what I put about the Lakers yesterday? I trust Phil to sort it out. Kobe has been “sucking” more this year. I’m in 100% agreement. Maybe I feel “sucking” is a little strong but he hasn’t been Kobe in every game this season. He’s had uncharacteristically poor games. You attribute it to whatever you want. Injuries are piling up on the game, he’s getting older. I’ve already conceded to Lebron as the top talent in the game. I don’t understand what you expect and honestly I don’t give a sh*t if you liked me better when I was just a knick fan because I don’t owe you any explanation of where my heart is. The Knicks are and always will be my team but I’ve been a Kobe fan since the 97 rookie game so spare me your “when you were only a knick fan” garbage because you didn’t even know before I was a Kobe fan. I understand your team is going down the toilet so you’re cranky, because my team has long been flushed away. But you know what? I liked you better when you didn’t mindlessly attack people who root for a certain team. If you want to treat me like some Laker zombie that’s fine but I’m not one of them. And if you wanna act like then be fair and call out Z and the other cavs zombies the same way. Or just go f*ck yourself I really don’t care. D*uche.

  • http://slamonline.com ronronronronronronron

i love kobe since he came in the league and im a huge lakers fan. But yeah he just tries doing too much sometimes and last night was one of those times

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Shia, it’s not that big of a deal. You’re an idiot. That hasn’t changed in the years you’ve been posting here. My team has sucked for the better part of 4 seasons, so really, I’m not concerned about comparisons to other teams of the same shi*ty ilk. Stop stalking my life at the Slam site, bro!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

And by the way, hiding your man-love for Kobe for several years around here until dude was back on top seems like a stretch when YOU claim “I’ve sucked off dude in my dreams since the 97 rookie game” or whatever ghey sh*t it was that was you wrote. Keep that bi*ch sh*t to yourself, homeboy.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

You’re still my dude though even if you are a cranky old f*ck.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Back to basketball, if Durant was 25 lbs heavier, I think he would have smashed Manu to the ground with his dunk attempt. Manu made a great play, but most guys, unless it’s a big shotblocker, would still get the dunk down with their strength. Kevin’s still a bit light.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Yo I think all that G T L’in has sapped your memory. Or the Gel seeped in. I always had kobe’s back and Iverson. My favorite players don’t have to play for my favorite team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I love you too….and AI, and Anthony Mason.

“Like a bunch of us have said all season long…..they’re really not that great…The Lakers are great for a game or two and then play like the Warriors. It’s hard to really see them as champions…”

And yet, the Lakers became the champions. Talk is cheap, so are excuses.

  • LA Huey

@Allenp, I hear you. I think Haywood was the best part for the Mavs in that deal. Dude is like Damp with a heart. If we got a Cavs-Mavs finals, its going to be real interesting to watch those ex-Wizards meet up with LBJ.

  • Anthony

I’d love to see Manu playing at this level more consistently, it’s like one day he scores 26points, the other day it’s 4points on 2/10 shooting

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    I never wrote that, Jackie.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Here’s something Jackie wrote: July 20, 2009, Jackie Moon posted: “I feel that next season the Lakers will win 74 games and Kobe will average in the 40′s….not sure if that’s going to be accurate, but what the hell, I love them”

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Yes, your accuracy is mind-numbingly airtight.

  • http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikebasketball/en_US/signature/moves?player=kobe_bryant&move=3 Jackie Moon

@Eboy Difference is that I’m joking around, and you’re annoyingly opinionated and wrong.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Sure you’re joking, Jackie….you’re extremely witty too. Sorry I pi*sed on your boys parade for a garbage performance last night, criticism is hard to swallow.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Ship Amber Rose’s ass on my face.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

And I don’t know If I should be flattered or petrified that you were able to pull up a comment from a playoff series last season to try and compare detrimental comments from someone you have ZERO connection too. Just saying.

  • http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikebasketball/en_US/signature/moves?player=kobe_bryant&move=3 Jackie Moon

Hey, you can’t win every game. If you hated the Bulls back in ’96, I’m sure you’d be all over their 10 losses. Nothing wrong with criticism. You’re just overbearing with your opinions. Had to point out your track record for predictions hasn’t exactly been the best. And I still stand by my 74-8 prediction for the Lakers this season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Funny you mentioned the ’96 Bulls, since I loved them. Weird how that works, huh?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Let’s cut the cat-fighting chaps…
Eboy hates Kobe. Eboy hates the Lakers. Eboy’s hatred has no impact whatsoever on Kobe or the Lakers.
Just ignore it, I find it easy since I’m not a Kobe or Lakers fan, and Eboy is often kind of funny with his jibes.
Laker fans should be more concerned about how good the Nuggets look. And that’s hard for me to say since I’m not a Nuggets fan either.

  • http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikebasketball/en_US/signature/moves?player=kobe_bryant&move=3 Jackie Moon

You like the ’96 Bulls, huh? Who doesn’t. They’re only the Best Team Ever. That’s probably why your expectations are so high. You can’t seem to grasp that being a great or clutch player doesn’t mean you are some kind of superhuman, and that championship teams lose to all kind of crappy teams. Most champs are not the ’96 Bulls. You just have to be good enough to beat four teams in a seven game series.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I agree with Allen….and Jackie’s last comment. And I know a bunch of people that hated that 96 Bulls team, including a certain Bryan who posted a bit earlier here.

  • LA Huey

Hey guys, since we’re bringing up predictions from last year… LA Huey Posted: Jun.25 at 12:34 pm
You guys, Durant is going off this year. He’ll have like 29 straight games of 25+ points. That streak will prolly be ended by a Manu Ginobli (who will be inconsistent all year) defensive play. That game will also mark OKC falling short of a 10-game win streak….wow, i’m so cool

  • Farman

The only thing that was proven in regards to last night’s game is this; Dallas may be the #2 team in the West. Maybe. Denver Nuggets at the top of their game as a team is going to be hard to beat. Bad luck was on their side last year against the Lakers during the playoffs. But that’s now the past, and that’s all it is. Adding Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to go along with Dirk, Terry, and Kidd gives them the best chance I think they will ever have to take done L.A. They are deeper and more talented at every position. Now they have about 6 weeks to make it work before the show starts. It’s become a 3 team race to the finals. L.A., Denver, and Dallas. I think Denver going after big Z will only slow them down. He can’t guard Gasol or Bynum. They are better off picking up a Mikki Moore type, who is younger and more athletic. Let’s be honest, you’re looking for guy to use his 6 fouls and bother the two 7 footers. Dallas already has that. The difference between the two teams is, who will be that 3rd consistent option for Denver. Dallas has Dirk, Caron, and Terry. With Denver, you know Melo and Billups will bring it every night. Will it be J.R. Smith or Nene? The great thing about this years playoffs will be whoever that comes out of the east, will be the 4th best team in the league. Cause right now, its L.A. 1, Dallas 2A and Denver 2B……….

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Farman
Denver didn’t lose becuase of bad luck, they lost because Phil Jackson made an adjustment to prevent Melo from abusing them on the offensive glass and post, and George Karl never countered. And then his team fell apart emotionally. This year I still see Karl getting outcoached, but I don’t know if the Nuggets combust emotionally. They could beat the Lakers for sure.
Mikki Moore plays no defense, don’t be fooled by his pretend hustle. He doesn’t defend and he barely rebounds. He should say his prayers to Jason Kidd every night that he still has an NBA career.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    *couldn’t care less

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Bryan may be the only human on the planet who worships Bryant, Nash and Iverson equally. He should be dissected and studied.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Don’t forget Kevin Durant and Stephon Marbury.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

The difference is even though I hated the bulls, I respected their greatness and was actually in awe of how great they played in 96. I even rooted for them against the Jazz because I hate the motherf*cking jazz.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Oh but they played the sonics in 96 yeah I wanted them to lose that year.

  • vtrobot

jacking that 3 up at the end was classic kobe. early in the shot clock, too deep. how about trying to get a higher percentage shot? naw, dude is in hero mode. he seemed to laugh it off after the game, but these instances could impact home court in the finals.

  • T-Money

Denver should have taken the Lakers to 7 games last year, the gap between Phil Jax and George Karl is amazing. Karl gets a pass from most journalists but he is really a terrible coach. / Lakers losing games in February is fine. What should be a concern to Lakers fans though is that Lamar and Pau chalk every loss to a lack of focus. That’s just not true, the talent gap (in terms of pure skills) between them and the other serious contenders is no longer there. Cleveland, Denver and Orlando have SERIOUS talent on their roster now. The bench is weak and the point guard situation is terrible. They can absolutely beat everybody but they need to take the aforementioned trio seriously.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Most overrated coaches in the L:
    5) Larry Brown
    4) Mike D’Antoni
    3) George Karl
    2) Don Nelson
    1) Mike Brown (yeah, and everyone knows he’s atrocious, but he’s STILL overrated)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I don’t know about the two Browns.
Mike Brown sucks at offense, is a wiz at defense. Last year they lost to Orlando because of a lack in personnel, not his defensive scheme. So, I think Brown is average.
Larry Brown is also a wiz on defense and sucks pretty much on offense. But, he doesn’t suck because he doesn’t know how to coach offense, it seems like he doesn’t even care about how his team performs offensive as long as the play defense and play the right way. I think he’s properly rate now.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

    Agree 100% juk.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Allenp: That’s absolutely untrue. It took Mike Brown four games to put Lebron at the four. Lebron was actually guarding Skip to my Lou for most of the series.
    It failed completely.
Mike Brown simply couldn’t adjust ingame. He couldn’t draw up defensive plays, and was terrible in time outs.
Mike Brown has a great defensive scheme and great defensive work-outs, since all the players who go to the Cavaliers become better defensive players.
But he’s still a sh*t defensive coach. He just can’t make adjustments in the game. He can’t hype up his players to play defense… he really can’t do anything that a COACH would do.
He seems more like a great defensive training coordinator to me.
I give points off to Larry Brown because the dude holds grudges like a mother f*cker and mostly hurts his team more than he helps his team during these sissy fights. People think of Larry Brown as one of the better coaches in the L, I think he’s a dangerous gamble of a coach. He is a great defensive coach, but I like coaches who see what they have and say “okay… how do I use these guys properly” and not “okay, this guy can’t play my style but I’m not going to try and develop anything for him, F him”

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

I’ll asterisk my Larry Brown comment and say I don’t think he’s anywhere near as terrible as the other coaches. People just think he’s a GREAT COACH and I think great coaches actually reward some semblance of offense and don’t get into hissy fits with their players.

  • http://thundertoday.wordpress.com Evan

This may be one of the best things for Kevin Durant though. He now should be able to relax in the sense of no stress for scoring, so expect big number against the Timberwolves. There is stress to win now though. There is a good analysis of the team at thundertoday.wordpress.com if you would like a Thunder blog to be able to check out Kevin Durant, Westbrook, and others on the Thunder team.

  • T-Money

I disagree completely with your assessment of Mike Brown’s defensive coaching. Playing Bron at the 4 last year meant extended minutes for Wally or Sasha at the 3, which was not an option. And they had to double down on Dwight because he was killing Z and Andy 1vs1. Orlando was just a terrible match up for last year’s squad and I don’t know if much could have been done by Mike Brown to patch those glaring holes without Shaq to play 1vs1 defense and Parker/Moon to provide length on the perimeter. Actually, I think Mike Brown might be the best defensive coach in the league. He just happens to be somewhat mentally challenged on the offensive end.

  • ENDS

    I hayed the 96 Bulls

  • Hangtime Hec

Jukai Mike D’antoni as four most overrated? He hands down owns the crown and throne to that award. God he is so overrated. He has a great offensive system. THEN THATS IT.

  • ENDS

    *hated.

Plus D12 played only 3 Quarters. for as much hate he gets around here Man deserves some credit for improving his O game

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

T-Money: Why exactly was that not an option? The big issue was Hickson and Varejao not knowing how to double team for the life of them… Lebron could have double teamed Howard effectively (he did when he was at the four) and prevented Lewis from getting ridiculously open three point shots. Devastating.
If he was such a great defensive coach, he would have explained to Andy to not double team if you have to sprint ten yards to do it leaving your man completely open. He would have explained to West that West needed to lead Hedo to a big and not just front and smack him.
I mean, christ, there was so much wrong with how the Cavaliers performed defensively that could have been fixed, that it forver changed my opinion of brown.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Hangtime: Yes, this is true… but I think people recognize that. My list was “overrated” coaches, not “worst” coaches. D’antoni is worse than Karl, but not as overrated.

  • Hangtime Hec

Lets not forget the ousting of players to the bench even tho there playing well. (Nate Robinson). Having a inept perspective that Duhon is NOT Steven Nash nor ever will be. Not developing players. ( Jordan Hill). He has the two times the flaws that Larry Brown has as a coach yet no were near the positives.

  • Hangtime Hec

Ohhhhkay. Then forget my past post then.

  • Eboy

I LOVE KOBE BRYANT SO MUCH!!!!!

  • backboard

Yo, if someone (Eboy) who never even comes to the site anymore only shows up to bash a certain player (Kobe Bryant) if he just had a bad game, you can´t help but wonder what issues that critic has with the athlete.

I mean, has your wife told you that she would like to find out how KB´s a$$ tastes, has he told your kid that he looks like his dad, who is a fat below average looking a$$hole? What?

Seriously, you behave like an irrational rage-kid. Simply the fact that you (at almost 40 years of age) show up here just to sh!t on KB and to tell everyone in range how stupid and worthless they are, while making claims and accusations that are incredibly wrong makes you look sooooooooooooooo bad, and makes me wonder if you really have a life or any irl friends.

You are just a head-case and if i could i would drop-kick your balloon-headed son and do what to your wife what you can´t……… gtfo old man, you look fukking stupi d raging against a man that doesnt even know u ecxist….

woooo, sorry to the rest, i know its not gonna change sh!t, but it had to be said…
