The Post Up: KD’s Ballin’

And Bron’s blocks are best.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Last night was a rare early night in the NBA! There were not any West Coast games and the latest start was 8:30 p.m. This is kind of amazing for someone who has to wait until the final game is over before they can start writing. One thing I “resolved” for 2010 –besides reading a book a week– was to start taking better care of myself. This means more sleep and having more than coffee in my days!

I’m determined to get more sleep. If I am writing about how tired I am next week, remind me of that in the comments please! Thanks. Now, onto the other resolution: Give me your favorite reads, books that have changed you, stayed with you and made you think. Nonfiction, fiction, sports, life, music, etc, let me hear em, thanks.

And onto the bball. The prettiest thing I saw all night was LeBron’s chase down block on O.J. Mayo. We’ve seen so many of these, but they never get old to me. LeBron chase down blocks are the equivalent of guys finishing up practice with halfcourt shots. You see one, you see 100, it doesn’t matter. They all amaze.

The Cavs took down the Grizz, 105-89. On the night after they took down the Lakers, Memphis just didn’t have enough to compete with Cleveland. LeBron was a distributor, and for some points of the game, played the PG spot, with a lineup of guys all over 6’8″. Kinda nuts. Bron finished with 22 points, seven boards, 15 assists and that beautiful block. Shaquille O’Neal added 13 points and 13 rebounds (and four blocks of his own!) and Daniel Gibson scored 16. The 15 assists for Bron tied a career-high. He’s pretty awesome, yeah?

After winning five straight, the Raptors went into Indy and gave up 130 points. It wasn’t pretty for us Canadians. 130-115 was the final score and the Raps were without DeMar DeRozan and Hedo Turkoglu from the tip and lost Jose Calderon to an awful ankle sprain before it was over. He came down on Jarrett Jack’s foot and it was one of this sickening sprains, where you roll your ankle so much the ankle actually touches the floor. Blech.

While Danny Granger was just 3-for-13 in the Pacers loss against the Raptors on Sunday, he came alive on his home floor, finishing with 23 points and seven boards. The Raps lost despite big nights from Bosh and Bargnani as Bosh finished with 35 and 15 and Bargnani added a career-high 34. Allowing the Pacers to score 72 in the second half is usually going to result in a loss.

In Orlando, apparently having Lawrence Frank around has given Vince Carter a spring to his step. Against the Bucks, he was pretty solid, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists a steal and a block. Dwight had 22 points and 11 rebounds (but six silly turnovers) and the Magic won 99-82 as Milwaukee was held to just 36 percent shooting for the game. Orlando won despite playing without Mickael Pietrus and Jameer Nelson. Maybe they need to keep LF around? I’m just happy the man isn’t in Jersey.

Speaking of Jersey, the Nets fell to 4-43 last night, losing another close one, this time to the Pistons. With the return of Will Bynum, Detroit made free throws –and benefited from awful shot selection/clock management by Devin Harris at the end of the game– to get the 97-93 victory. Harris had 24 points and 14 assists in the loss while Rip finished with 22 points and seven assists for the Pistons. I was just happy to see Bynum back on the floor.

Hear that Del Harris may be leaving the Nets? What a mess. They are in town tonight here in Toronto and guess what our halftime entertainment is? Vanilla Ice. I kid you not. Could I make that up? Crazy.

The Bulls were unable to pull off their sixth straight victory, falling at home to the Clippers. 24 points from Eric Gordon, 21 points and 11 rebounds from Chris Kaman and 16 from Rasual Butler helped the Clippers overcome just an eight-point performance from Baron Davis. Luol Deng had 18 points and Derrick Rose scored 16. You know it’s an ugly game when the Clippers manage just 12 points in the fourth and still win by eight.

In Houston, the Rockets killed the Warriors, 119-97. That’s about all I have to say about that one, besides mentioning that the Warriors roster is a mismash of players that I’d bet the average Warriors fan doesn’t even know. Aaron Brooks had 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists. How that guy gets eight rebounds, I don’t know. Love little guards. The Rockets outrebounded GS 57-35. Yeah.

Agh. So my paragraph about the game of the night, the Hawks and Thunder just randomly got cut and it won’t let me re-paste it. Kevin Durant scored 33 on 18 shots and the Thunder got the season sweep of the Hawks, taking them down 106-99. KD added 11 boards, too. Russ Westbrook was awesome with 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. He also had a dunk that shows why he should be in the dunk contest. For the Hawks, Joe Johnson was solid with 37 points, but it wasn’t enough. The game was close down the stretch with Durant hitting two buckets and Jeff Green hitting a huge 3-pointer to give the Thunder some breathing room.

Josh Smith become the youngest player in NBA history to record 1000 career blocks. Kevin Durant became the first player since Allen Iverson to score 25 points or more in 22 consecutive games.

I was a happy girl because the Thunder are awesome.

  • BackInBlack

go raps, KD is gonna b the best one day

  • jumpman3224

Do you remember hearing those Bosh to OKC trade rumors? How scary would a team built on Bosh, Durant and Westbrook be for the next 10 years?

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

    Durant4MVP.

  • http://Slamadamonth.com Mvp23100

Backinblack hes good but i dont think so

  • http://Slamadamonth.com Mvp23100

Bron is a beast you see him doing everything kobe couldnt like pass the ball And be. Facilitator that mvp is locked and i think the cavs are running anybody off the court with there play right now and thats without mo and delonte

I never imagined I could be worried about OJ Mayo’s confidence, but I don’t know how he’s going to be able to play against LeBron anymore. He’s like a dude walking by himself down the worst block in Detroit at 3 am on a Saturday — can’t help looking over his shoulder every two seconds to see if someone’s going to sneak up and splatter him.

  • jumpman3224

As far as KD being the best in the L someday. It could happen. I think in a few years when LBJ is 32 and KD is 28 we will be having a bunch of “KB24 v LBJ” sort of discussions.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Lebron’s amazing.
Cavs travel like crazy, Z’s hook shot last night was hilarious.
Parker got crossed up, lol and hit the floor!!
    Rudyyyyy dunked on BRON!!!!
OJ Mayo takes a lot of fast break 3 pointers.
WEAK fouls on the Grizz last night!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

MVP, I am not even getting started with that garbage today lol.

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

    Change the record.

  • T-Money

Not to be a party pooper or anything but KD is actually TRAILING Bron’s production in his 3rd year. How quickly ppl forget that Bron was 31-7-7 in his 3rd year. And I mean, Kevin Durant is CRAZY nice but to think that he is more valuable and productive to OKC than Bron is to Cleveland this year is just plain wrong. Actually, it’s not even a discussion.

  • T-Money

I mean, the guy is averaging 8+ assists a game, good for 6th in the league. That’s insane. The guys in front of him (CP3, Nash, D-Will, J. Kidd and Rondo) were basically born playing the point.

  • http://digitalthread.com AlbertBarr

Holly, anything by author Tom Robbins is a must read. I have read every title he has penned. If you have to choose just one of his books though…read: Jitterbug Perfume. If only two, add in his book of short writings and travel articles: Wild Ducks Flying Backwards. If you are into dark novels, I really like the modern dystopian novel: Oryx and Crake – very disturbing and yet delightful, its like Catcher in the Rye meets Brave new world. I love Christopher Moore’s books (always a comically tragic ending). David Sedaris is illuminating. My personal list goes on and on but please…Read some Robbins…it will do you good.

  • T-Money

Nellie played Coby Karl 38 minutes yesterday. Either he puts the bottle down or he’s got to go. It’s kinda sad to see him sticking around to break records.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Man… the only stat that KD doesn’t have with bron is Assist’s and that is because, like last night, Bron has his hands on the ball 96 percent of the time the Cavs are on the attack. KD has a pg, and he lets him do the passing… last night 33 points, 11 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl… he is a beast. but doesn’t dominate the ball like Bron.

  • jumpman3224

@T-Money KD is trailing LBJ’s production in year three. LBJ’s PER that year was 28.1 and Durant is at 25.59 this season. So it wasn’t like LBJ at year three was lightyears ahead of KD at year 3. But, I do agree that KD can not be the MVP over LBJ this season.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

James: Because he can’t. I mean, you’re right about the point guard notion, but Durant doesn’t dominate the ball because he simply isn’t that great of a passer. He may develop into a serviceable one, but Durant just isn’t a passer.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Naw, I agree Jukai. bron is a great dribbler and passer. But KD is an underrated passer! He isn’t the best passer, he needs to work on it, but he isn’t a turnover machine. And dribbling, well bron has him on that. But KD has him for shooting touch, and I think he is a better rebounder then bron!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Jumpman, please don’t bring that PER garbage in here!! God damn.

  • T-Money

They are miles apart in passing, defense, crunch time scoring and leadership. Miles. I don’t want to bash the kid because, truly, he’s an AMAZING talent but that’s just not a fair comparison. At least, not yet. We’ll see in a couple of years. Right now, Durant is a scorer. That’s it. Bron is matching his scoring output while basically on cruise control and that’s just one of the many, many facets of his game. Appreciate KD for what he is.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

James: I think they’re even in rebounds. James has two seven footers and two oversized PFs on that team he has to contend with for rebounds.
Saying they are even says something though, since Bron is a freak of nature who has springs for legs, so for me to consider KD even, well, that speaks for itself. People talk about KD’s (minimal) improved defense and (minimal) improved passing, but the thing that I am most impressed with this year is KD’s rebounds. He’s positioning himself better, timing them more.
I actually think KD has a few more moves than Lebron in isos and one-on-ones. But he isn’t anywhere near Lebron’s level terms of dribbling through traffic or controlling the ball in the paint.

  • T-Money

Jukai: Bron doesn’t have any ‘go-to’ moves on 1vs1 per se. He’ll spin or cross or juke only if the defender dictates that outcome or cuts off his path to the basket. That’s the only area where Bron reminds me of MJ. They don’t ‘do’ pre-programmed moves.

  • T-Money

But yeah, I’m impressed with KD’s rebounding and his slashing too. IN his first year, he was shooting terrible percentages because he couldn’t get to the rim. He’s wiry strong now.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

T-Money: He mostly just runs straight ahead and outspeeds + out-muscles the guy..
The nicest move I’ve ever seen Lebron pull on someone was still in the 2006 playoffs. When Lebron behind-the-back crossed Billups out and hit that jumper. Haven’t seen him do that since.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you think Kevin Durant is even close to Lebron as a complete basketball player, you need to put the pipe down now.
Now, if you think Durant might be a better scorer than Lebron, I can feel your argument. But that’s where it ends. On every other level, Lebron is superior now, and was superior when he was the same age.

  • http://Slamadamonth.com Mvp23100

Kd is great we knew that when he was in school having 30-15s but he’s not bron per should always be bought up thats player efficiency rating numbers never lie if you are a real ball player or fan you have to see lebron is the best in the league if you had a checklist of 10 things that make your game complete bron probably does 7 of those at a high rate i cant say the same for melo wade kobe durant But also i would be a fool to not think those other dudes aren’t great

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jukai
Nah, Lebron has handles. I thought he didn’t, but when he wants to pull them out he can. It’s not like Durant is just isoing cats up and crossing them over like Deron Williams. Durant doesn’t score like that. He isn’t a dribbler.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

KD for best “scorer” in the L. Don’t really think he does much besides that but it’s giving the Thunder W’s on most night now so it’s all good.

  • BackInBlack

lebron got 22 points 15 assists yesterday. what a g

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

T-money, was Bron good in his 3rd year, was he compared to Kobe?
I agree with everything Juk’s. Dribbling is not close!! He is like a big Deron Williams, really strong, powerful, controlled dribbles, while running as fast as a train lol.
Lebron gets a lot of p()ssy fouls though man. A rarely gets charged on an offensive charge. It’s so crazy.
I will go back to loving Bron like I use to when I see him humble up a bit. He needs an injury that keeps him out for a bit… or a first round playoff exit or something.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

He doesn’t need to be a dribbler when he’s 6-10 and can shoot from the freaking halfcourt circle if he wanted to.

Book recommendation: Clockers by Richard Price, one of the writers on the wire. Still reading it myself at the moment, it’s very good.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Why are you guys comparing KD to Lebron? I think a more suitable comparison would be KD and Melo since their games are more similar…(KD seems to have more range though..)

  • mike

i would love to see a cavs thunder finals one day

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

It will proably happen Mike … when Kobe retires in 6/7 years!! : P

  • MattM

Hey Holly, a couple books I’ve been into lately have been Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell and The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein.

  • T-Money

James, wishing an injury on a star player is straight up disgusting. I have no respect for you. There is nothing that will make you like Bron more, accept it and move on. And a Kobe fan saying that Bron gets p-ussy fouls is kinda funny. Kobe doesn’t even need to drive to go to the line. He gets fouled on jumpers. Jukai, I thought you watched a lot of Cleveland games. Bron doesn’t pull out moves off the dribble unless they are necessary. Which is not often. I’d argue that KD is not a better scorer than Bron but his scoring is magnified since that’s the only thing he does but I won’t hate. Dude can score. Now can we just stop comparing the two for at least a couple of years? KD is not even top 5 in the NBA right now.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Not torn ACL like I had or anything. But, let’s say avulsion fracture to the shooting finger.
And it’s disappointing you have no respect, I am heart broken!
Man I am a huge Bron fan. i just like Kobe more. Bron is the best player in the NBA. I know this. But he has been getting hard to like.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

In the last 4 games Mr.Bryant made 19 assists. Mr.James made 50 assists.
Kobe, n!&&a, tell me how my pass taste?

  • http://digitalthread.com AlbertBarr

    Nice, Anton!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    lol that was good Anton.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

In last years playoffs, Kobe has a finals MVP and another ring. Bron has… well I am sure stats will keep him warm at night.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Lebron will always be a better passer than Durant but Durant is going to be a better scorer and rebounder when its all said and done. I’m not looking so stupid for declaring him behind only Melo and Kobe as a scorer before the season now am I?

  • LA Huey

Anton, are you including Kobe-Bryant-Assists in that comparison? You know, the one where teammates can take his missed shots as “rebound opportunities”. I’m sure Gasol and Bynum have many a putbacks as a result of KBAs.

  • T-Money

Bryan: Bryan, can you remind me why he is a better scorer or rebounder than Bron again? Now and in the future. I’m really curious to hear your rationale on this. And when has Melo been a better scorer than Bron? Check their $tats. (No argument on Kobe, he has the resume, he has the 35 ppg year, the 81 points)

  • LA Huey

Also, Holly. Check out Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox.

  • T-Money

Bron scored 31.5 ppg in his 3rd year and everybody can agree that he’s a much better player now. He’s at 30 because his team needs him to make plays for others, something that Durant and Melo don’t have to do, they’re straight up gunners. And even then, they’Re in a virtual tie for the scoring lead. How crazy is it that one of the scoring leaders in the NBA does not even concentrate on scoring? Anyways, we’re running circles here but I’m not even trying to talk about Bron and Durant in the same breath until KD becomes Top 5 in the league. They’re really not that close.
