The Post Up: LeBron…

I’m running out of words besides MVP.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Here we go: Happy All-Star weekend!

I was kind of forgetting yesterday that we had two more games before the break officially started, but here we are. Finally. Feels like I’ve been waiting for this weekend for a minute. No, I’m not in Dallas, but I’m pretty excited to sleep in for the next four days. Yay! Also pumped to watch All-Star Saturday… The dunk-in… rookie-soph, oh, you know I’ll be watching it all.

And loving it all. I know  a lot of people complain about the All-Star game/weekend and think it’s overhyped, but it’s fun. I like seeing so many players together, love them getting a chance to shine and show their personalities without the pressure of trying to win the game, etc., etc. I always enjoy it.

I’m pulling hard for DeMar DeRozan to make it to Saturday’s dunk contest and then win it, but damn, how is anyone going to take down Shannon Brown?

About Dallas: I think the basketball Gods decided to make me feel a little bit better about missing the game by making it snow like mad there while I’m here in Toronto where it wasn’t even that cold yesterday. With a record snowfall and players and media having trouble making it to Dallas, it’s going to be one wild weekend when it does finally all get started. Here’s hoping our boys are safely on their way right now! Can’t wait to hear all of your adventures, Lang and Ben!

In Cleveland, the Cavs were up and then they were down and then in the end they went to LeBron. Pretty simple. They also got the 115-106 victory  against the Magic, as LeBron finished with 32 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists. He’s just silly. Foolishly good. I feel like I type these exact same words every week, but they are true and they don’t change.

After hitting back-to-back daggers at the end to break the back of the Magic, Bron walked to the bench as Mo Williams hopped off of the bench and tossed his blazer over his teammate’s shoulders, like a cape. Showing that despite Shaq and Dwight being in the arena, Bron’s the one who deserves a cape because he’s the Cavs superhero.

It was a fun game.

In Denver, the Nuggets trailed to the Spurs for most of the game and then suddenly, the Spurs really turned it on and turned the game into a blowout. Guess the Nuggets were the team that was unable to keep their focus right in the hours before they were free for All-Star break. Kinda seems appropriate. In the end, the Spurs won 111-92, despite playing without Tony Parker. George Hill and DeJuan Blair had 17 points apiece for SA, while Tim Duncan added 16.

It’s got to be said: Sentences involving George Hill and speed will never be the same for me after those stupid texts came out last week.

Glad to see him continuing to add to this impressive season he’s had after working so hard in the offseason. And Blair, well, of course I love seeing him play well. How can’t you.

For the Nuggets, Nene led the way with 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Russ said on Twitter that every non-dunk scored by Nene should only count for one-point. That’s how strong he is. So fun to watch. Even though the Nuggets were just out of sync last night. Billups and Melo were a combined 10-for-33 from the floor. Yeah, they’re ready to get on with their break. As am I!

Okay, I know this is a little short today, but it’s the break and I’m going to get on with my day. Enjoy the weekend wherever you are. If you’re in the snow, stay safe and make some snow angels for me!

What a performance by Lebron…Can we stop refering to Kobe as “the best closer in the league” now or is that a consolation prize now that Lebron has passed him in all facets of the game?

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

As the human torch would say, “Flame On”

  • http://Www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

JR had a nasty 180 dunk on Manu in the game, a beaut! And Chauncey has no conscience, jacking up all those bad 3′s. Oh well, bring on ASW.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

    A fantastic 4 reference. I luv Slamonline.

  • MattM

Nene’s solid night helped me clinch a solid 11-2 win this week in fantasy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

JR’s dunk was just sick. One of the best I’ve seen all year. Late addition to the dunk in!

  • http://Thankgodimfamous.com Sickamore

    @MooButter

    All facets but winning

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Moobutter, Lebron is the best closer EVER!!!
JR smith got robbed the first year he was in the dunk contest!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Moobutter is a jeanius!! lol

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

    Lol @ Dark

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

dorksaber, that doesnt explain the a now does it? whatever. the magic have got to get dwight the ball in the 4th. its great he has added that bank shot. jameer nelson is pulling down that team from the inside. turnovers, missed layups, horrible shot attempts. they need to trade him for kirk hinrich.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

It’s pretty obvious Lebron is the #1 talent in the game…….everyone else is about #3-7……#2 is not even close enough to rank anymore. If the Cavs can win it this season there will NOT be a logical argument, ever again. Well, except around here, where logic has no place in the world.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Lebron is just a force of nature man. I’m not jumping on his bandwagon because I think he’s an ah*le. Kobe is my dude but he can’t just impose his will on teams for all 82 anymore. For stretches of the season Kobe will be dominant and come playoff time I expect him to bump it up ten notches but right now in the regular season no one can control a game on sheer physical prowess the way Lebron can.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

I also still think in the next 2 years or so Durant will be = or >. He’s not the athletic andu physical marvel Lebron is but he is athletic and can work on the physical but his ball skills and work ethic make me think his potential is infinite.

  • http://www.yahoo.com Logues

deep down how pissed do u think kobe is now that bron is the best player in the game

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

As pis$ed as Jordan was when Kobe became the best?

  • http://www.yahoo.com Logues

James: haha, u just had to bring it up didnt you? are u saying that kobe is better than mj or are u referring to when kobe became the best player in the game

  • Trey

I find it hilarious that people will say Lebron is an a-hole, then in the same breath, praise Kobe. Oh the irony

  • vtrobot

@ james, which year did JR get robbed in the dunk contest? did nate rob him? ’cause that guy robs everyone in that contest. those two lebron daggers were great. i love moments like that in sports. lebron just hits a pretty amazing step back 3, they come back down the floor again, and you know exactly where the ball is going and what going to happen with it and there’s nothing you can do. next level sh*t. fun to watch. holly, have fun at the ASG weekend. as always, it very nice to hear things through your enthusiastic perspective.

  • vtrobot

P.S. Shannon Brown is taking it this year.

  • LA Huey

LBJ was on fire. That awful turnaround J actually went in. It’s ridiculous how great he is with footwork that leaves a lot of room for improvement and the a J that isn’t quite automatic yet (on a normal night).

  • T-Money

Bryan, nice back-handed compliment but that’s far from the truth. Bron didn’t impose his ”physical” will on Orlando yesterday. He did his damage by racking up 13 assists and hitting 4 straight long jumpers with a defender all over him in the final 3 minutes. / As far as KD ovetaking him in a couple of years, that’s just wishful thinking. He will never be as athletic and he will never be as gifted of a passer that LeBron is + his D is really bad. There is nothing to suggest that he has a better work ethic than Bron who keeps adding stuff to his game every year and travels all summer long with Chris Jent to work out every single day even when he is doing promotion or filming ads. Right now there is one thing that KD does better than Bron: shoot free throws. There’s an argument about KD being a better scorer but Bron has proved time and time again that he will absolutely go for 40+ whenever he wants to and the stakes are high enough. (He’s also leading the league in scoring and has the highest career scoring avg of active players).

  • T-Money

Seriously, I feel like most of the criticism right now is based on his 2007 game and not his 2010 game. The footwork, the post up game, the shooting… they’re no longer an issue. He has confidence in his jumper and he has proven (LA, Orl) that he can bury teams with long range shooting at the end of games. He took Artest to the block, he took Barnes and Pietrus to the block. To me, the next step for LeBron is becoming an 85% free throw shooter. 78 is too low for a star wing.

  • CSP8

2 Best shots of the night, the moonwalk to the 3 point line and of course the spinning heat check (i can usually predict all his moves but nobody saw that one coming).

  • roman

@T-Money That ish isnt gonna work in a seven game series, let alone the whole playoffs. He will be gassed by the finals, if he makes it.

  • roman

Lebron is a clown- he’s not taking this game serious at all. Dude needs to grow up, with all the dancing. Dance when you win it all. Until then, be a little humble. That’s why when he loses, he cant deal with it. Suicide watch is possible after this season for him.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

T-Money, most of the criticism is based on Lakers fans loooooooove for Kobe, and otherwise general jealousy – it’s basically impossible, in this day and age, to be very successful AND universally popular.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Logues – Yeah when Kobe became the best in the game.
trobot- the year he did the behind the back dunk!!
I was doing a LOT of stat digging last night. And guess what guys!! I uncovered a secret!!!!
Lebron has NEVER been to a finals without … Larry hughes. Crazy eh. For 7 years, he went to the finals once. Maybe this year too. But… that being said. Bron is 1-7. Kobe is 6-14. And don’t get me started on wins in the finals … in the end I came to the conclusion that. Lebron never goal tends, and that he needs Larry Hughes back, or the Cavs are in trouble!!

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

    *sigh*
4 of Kobe’s final appearances were with Shaq, and the other 2 with Pau Gasol.
and LeBron had Larry Hughes? LeBron’s best teammate so far has been Mo Williams? imagine if he’d had 2000-2004 Shaq, or Pau – do you think he’d have got to the finals? i think he might.
Lakers fans hiding behind “finals” and “rings” are just deluding themselves.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

lol joking SAB. But I know what you’re saying man. Kobe is so lucky. Imagine MJ with Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

I can’t believe Kobe was an idiot, he won championships with good teammates. What a knob.
Lebron is smart though… if he wins this year. He didn’t play with anyone good AT ALL. He did it all himself. But if he loses. Well sh1T, his stupid teammates should have done something.
I hate guys that have talented teammates. Jerks!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Yeah… and fans that like a guy because of finals, and rings. Man… what are we thinking. GOD. Sometimes I forget how stupid some of us are.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

I will try and stop hiding.

  • Anthony

Just imagine for a minute if Kobe and Lebron could switch teams. An easy +75 wins season for L.A + the title

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

    T-money you’re an idiot. You’re probably Z in disguise. Go f*ck yourself.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Man if they switched. WOW, The Cavs would have to trade Kobe because of his sh!ttyness. And the lakers would be going for back to back to back 78+ win seasons!!!

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

i knew i shouldn’t have started this….. yes, Kobe’s good, great, well done indeed. but Bron’s a better player, and everyone else has accepted that and moved on. there isn’t even a debate these days. the only people who haven’t accepted it are Kobe-lovers and Bron-haters. understandably!
but to see all these moronic arguments on here still – “Bron ain’t won nothing!” – well, Anthony (at 2:28pm) is right – swap Bron and Kobe and the Lakers would be unstoppable, and the Cavs would not be a force. simple as that.

  • LA Huey

@T-Money, were the footwork and jumper comments including me? I know my handle implies I’m a Laker fan but the LA is not for Los Angeles. So don’t think I’m trying to hate on LBJ. He’s clearly the league’s best player.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

He is the best in the game.
And if you add him to any team in the NBA, they are definitely champions, just not the Cavs. But yeah, any other team and they are winning easily 78 games a season.

  • LA Huey

Laker fans, stop the rings argument. By that logic, Derek Fisher is better than Nash and Kidd…but then again Fish is a Laker, so you probably believe that.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

James – we didn’t say “any” team. we said Kobe’s team.
LeBron + Odom + Artest + Gasol + Bynum. Yeah, bet he’d prefer that to his current collection of team mates…

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

What about dwight, duncan, kd, pierce … oh yeah, sorry, just Kobe!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

You guys get mad at us because we love Kobe like ya’ll love Bron. We give reasons like 4 championships and such. And you guys say “OMG championships don’t meaning nothing, then fisher is better then nash” lol. Yeah thats what we mean. Bron lovers are worse then Kobe lovers. The only person who doesn’t think Bron is better then Kobe is the seed. We all know this. But we like Kobe for his accomplishments as well and his basketball god like skill. Because he has won (with teammates mind you), we won’t hold that against him. I hope Bron fans don’t make a big deal about a championship though if he does win one. Doesn’t mean anything right?

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

How can you give reasons like “four championships” when three of those championships happened 7+ years ago? How is that recent?
The point is, teams win championships. If you’re trying to ironically agree with this fact, stop bringing it up every twenty seconds. Who CARES that Kobe won a ring last year. The Lakers have not lost a game without Kobe against two teams that are possible high-seed playoff teams. Do you realize what that says about the Lakers as a team? Your Lakers boy Artest even said that without Lebron, the Cavaliers would not just be out of the playoffs, they’d be nothing. They’d be bottom feeders.
And while there is argument to say that his teammates all compliment him perfectly, there is absolutely no sane person on the planet who would say that Lebron has even half the talent around him than Kobe.
But you already know this, as you mentioned in your previous post.
    So stop bringing it up.

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

And if you’re trying to bring out the point: “if rings mean nothing, you dipsh*ts better not go ape if Lebron does win a ring” then come out and say it. Stop p*ssy footing around the point.
Kobe didn’t become better than MJ until MJ came back to the Wizards at 38.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Lebron greatest ever lol.

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

I guess when the truth is too obvious to ignore, logical debate slowly becomes upsettingly weak sarcasm

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Tell me how my Cavs taste.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Bottom line is Lebron is fuggin hooping right now and he has my vote for MVP no doubt. and this is a Laker fan talking now.

  • kg

i feel that lebron is just trying a lil bit too hard to live up to the “kobe-lebron” hype . kobe just does it so easy and smooth like a true veteran . . sumthn like a MJ

  • kg

kevin durant is a bottom feeder lol now he needs to wait for his time to come like melo did instead of trying to force his way into being good b/c its only ruining his game and his team like the thunder@bucks . he is a gunner

  • T-Money

lakers fans are in disarray. their favorite player is not the best player in the league. if the question was whos better, melo or kobe. they would just say kobe, they wouldnt even talk about rings. since they can’t admit that bron is better, they have to talk rings. like that’s relevant or something in a discussion about who’s playing basketball at a higher level RIGHT NOW. we’re not judging careers here.

“Tell me how my Cavs taste.”

    Thank you, Anton.

  • The Wize

It was funny when T-Money said Lebron travels all summer long. He travels all season long too, that’s the “footwork” someone else was talking about.

  • kudos

ALL COMMENTORS: like last year, the cavs went number one and had a 65 win year, as i expect lebron to do good in the reg season. Just like nash, regular season doesnt mean anything come playoffs.

  • LCD screen cleaner

Homecourt advantage and the opportunity to rest/dial it down the last few regular season games seem like fine perquisites for having a winning record.
