Tracy McGrady Hurt; Yes, Already (Again)

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Welcome to T-Mac’s life, and that of the Knicks.

Following an electrifying debut in a Knicks uniform on Saturday night, during which he poured in a season-high 26 points, T-Mac asked out of the game last night when he could no longer bear the pain in his surgically-repaired left knee (a knee, mind you, he had been rubbing on the bench during his Knick debut).

What little hope McGrady may have generated in his scintillating debut all but disappeared with the injury last night, to say nothing of the Knicks’ totally deflating loss to Milwaukee.

More from the NY Post:

Tracy McGrady’s comeback took a troubling turn when the new Knick limped off the court in the final minutes of his second game. The cursed Knicks limped to a horrifying 83-67 loss to the Bucks and were booed off the court by a surly Garden crowd after scoring their season low. McGrady said afterward he knocked knees twice and wouldn’t guarantee he’ll be healthy enough to face the Celtics tonight in Boston.

“Hopefully it’s not sore [today],” McGrady said. “Maybe I’ll lace them up and play, but we’ll see. We’ll see how it feels before the game … In the first half, I knocked knees with somebody. I didn’t really feel it until I came in here and sat 15-20 minutes and went out,” McGrady said. “Toward the end, I banged knees again. Coach saw me limping, so he pulled me out.”

Tonight’s game — with the Knicks visiting Boston — has a chance to be something special, as Eddie House and Nate Robinson face their former squads, but with T-Mac’s health up in the air (on a back-to-back, no less), Knicks fans probably shouldn’t hold their breath for something too positive to take place.

I’m really rooting for him, but the guy’s got terrible luck.

  • zabba

I’m surprised T-Mac even made it to New York. There were reports that he injured himself at the airport when a teammates luggage banged his knee.

  • doobie

guy makes 23 mill a year and barely plays. i say he has great luck

Why doesn’t hear wear a knee brace??

    Noooooo T-Mac!

  • http://www.Twitter/notebooknick NotebookNick

He needs to wear a full body protective suit. Or something.

Nothing new michael redd tmac one in the same never get to excited over fragile players

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

    Mr. Glass…

  • Nigel

I think he’ll be ok. He just needs to get a consecutive game streak under his belt. Get used to playing again.

  • tom

he needs something like in avatar :)

  • kh

I honestly hope he gets better. But seriously, what is going on in his life? What are the thoughts in his head? How is he creating this “bad luck”? Time to look in the mirror and address the root of the problem.
Get better TMac, you’re too talented to fade into oblivion.

  • tavoris

relax ppl…he played too many minutes too soon. Mike D needs to bring him along slowly-and not immediately depend on him to generate ALL the Knicks offense when he’s on the court.

  • Marty McFly

    Poor guy. So fragile.

  • karma

This is what you get for not remembering Deron Williams’ name….b**ch.

  • Jack Knife

    I’d trade places with him.

  • AL29

Goodbye T-Mac, thanks for dropping by.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

ONE OF 2 THINGS IS HAPPENING: 1-Mike D is sooooo stupid he runs a fast paced offense almost exclusevly for a guy who didnt play in more than a year AND HAD MAJOR KNEE SURGERY!!i mean, Wilson Chandler got like 5 shots yesterday, Gallo 8 and DLee 12, meanwhile EddieFreakinHouse is jackin up bad shots like is VinceCarter or something!! so Mac is tired, hope so…2- this is something that has to do with the knee problem and if it is, is really fucked up, when you have major knee surgery you need to put lots of muscle back around the knee 2 protect it, cause you lose a lot of it during the all process…hope hes just tired or is an insignificant knee to knee bang up thing though..

  • MikeC.

@tavoris – thank you for bringing a voice of reason. In Tracy’s first game, he did was most players do in their first game back from an extended absence. He played very well running on hype and adrenaline. The next game, reality set in and the adrenaline didn’t cover up the knee pain. McGrady just needs to play less minutes, and ease into the games. He spent his down-time working out with Tim Grover in Chi. It’s not like Grover is some bum who wouldn’t know if McGrady was ready or not. McGrady just needs some time. I’m not an expert, but I can’t find a reason why wearing a knee brace would be a terrible idea though.

  • LK44

The title of this article is misleading. McGrady’s not “hurt again”…his knee is sore. The guy just came back from major knee surgery and it’s going to be awhile before he works himself into playing shape. It’s all just part of the process of coming back…this really isn’t a big deal at all.

  • Ronald

It’s only a banged knee, both the article title + some of the comments are overreacting. It’s not like he tore he ACL and he needs surgery again or something.

  • dAnieL Lee

Slightly off topic but I wonder why T-Mac decided to go with the number 3 at the Knicks. I suprised that the Knicks hadn’t retired it…

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Mike D is (a dumb fuk) not doin what he should do: play him like 4max minutes per quarter…i saw both games, he looked tired as sh1t and yesterday was limping.. YOU CAN NOT HAVE MAJOR KNEE SURGERY, BE OUT 4MORE THAN A YEAR and play like its 2003!! just better be nothing to do with what was repaired, cause thats his career on the line right there..YOU HAVE TO BUILD MUSCLE AFTER A KNEE SURGERY TO PROTECT IT, cause it all gets weak in the process, BUT IM SURE TIM GROVER KNOWS A LITLE BETTER THAN I DO. hope mac gets healthy.

  • droxford

Well, if you put in the game, like Mike D. has, he’ll get bruised up and injured. If you play him gingerly, he’ll complain about not getting enough playing time, which is what he did in Houston. You people should all read this atricle about him – it sums up McGrady’s situation perfectly: http://tinyurl.com/y9tdndq

  • tavoris

@Daniel-he changed his number to #3 at the beginning of the season in tribute to his humanitarian efforts in Darfur.

  • Stillballin

Another player that didn’t reach the high potential, because of injuries..so sad!!

  • LK44

@tavoris & Daniel – He changed it to #3 for his documentary…but he said on Saturday that he plans on going back to #1 wherever he ends up next season.

  • Betweenthelegsbehindthebackthreesixtytwohandedalleyoop

What’s wrong with slam nowdays? Is it a general Hate-bandwagon or what?. Give the guy some credit..last night was an awesome performance… I really don’t understand..where all the hyped up hate comes from…..the title of the article is soooo exagerated aswel as the comments. It’s not the first time THIS month..i read an article with a stupid title…Ultra-exagerated BS.
    What happend to slam?

  • The Philosopher

I agree with Sporting – Lisbon – Blazers on everything except that D’Antoni is dumb.

  • tavoris

    LK-that’s kinda what I said

  • Kalumbian

Having torn my ACL and then being frustrated about not being able to play pick-up games with friends, I feel for T-Mac. Saturday’s game, and certain moments in last night’s game show he is still very talented and possess a great amount of basketball smarts (pulling up with Salmons on his back to draw a foul). It has to do with muscles having atrophied following surgery and him needing to build up the surrounding muscle to further protect the knee. The soreness he feels following playing and the tenderness following bumps has alot to do with scar tissue and nerve endings being cut.

It might be worth him wearing a knee pad to protect against sharp knocks, rather than a knee brace.

I think T-Mac has the potential to be our next Larry Johnson – a player forced to change because of injury, but manages to reinvent himself and proves valuable as a role player. D’ Antoni just needs to bring him on slower.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

See what he really needs is the PHX staff….

  • Ronald

@guywithlongtitle yeah, the beep writier for slamonline.com likes to exaggerate article titles for hits. they do it constantly. and marcel is a big offender too

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@droxford: I read that thing. and I know Adelman and and Houston´s players arent A-holes. they actually seem to be hard working good guys (even though i hate their guts for winning that playoff series vs my team last year)…so I come to the conclusion Mac´s an overpayed/fragile/extremly talented player.. thing is, I CAN NOT BLAME A GUY FOR BEING FRAGILE FISICALLY, though that can be worked a litle bit too, BUT HES CLEARLY FRAGILE PHSYCOLOGICALY, and for that he should be blamed. now i see why he was never out of the first round. I DONT WANT ANNYONE LIKE THAT ON MY TEAM, EVEN IF HES THAT TALENTED!

  • Rob

I don’t understand it. If he has a surgically repaired knee, why the f*ck doesn’t mcrady use a knee pad??

If I were on a badly coached team thats not getting to the playoffs and had only about 23 games left and a summer shopping spree coming. I’d do the same thing he’s done in the past when my teams were not gonna make the playoffs. I just wonder if he’s really all that injured or one of the smartest business men who has worked the system like a pimp in the game? In the words of the immortal Bishop Magic Don Juan, “The Chairman of the Board will not be whored, play on playa.”

    why am I not shocked???

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

This doesn’t change anything its not like the knicks give a f*ck about winning anyway.

  • lucas

I agree with niq. Oh yeah, and a brace for a surgically repaired knee is usually a pretty good idea…

  • letsmotor

    get well soon T-mac!

poor T-mac. At one point he was the best player in the NBA. Hope he recovers so he can be remembered as more than just one of the league’s great all-time tragedies.

  • Mack

Cmon, Tmac, quit whining and play the damn game

  • ab_40

why isn’t underarmour sponsoring mcgrady. dude needs olajuwan in year 18 type braces. at least those knee braces with padding

Bumping knees in your second game back is never a good thing hehe. He’ll be fine. sitting a man who’s coming back from injury for 20 minutes is dumb especialy after playing him 32 minutes in his first game.

  • StF

    Not Really that important,
he could play tonight, hes just not 100% yet

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

he’s listed as ‘probable’ for tonight’s game.

Lets go tmac ur too old just retire ya big bucket of bolts face it u suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JKiller15

This article describes T-Mac’s career and legacy perfectly in my opinion:

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Not a big deal, T-Mac has proved he can still play. He obviously isn’t 100% yet, but that will obviously take some time. He barely played at all this season and suddenly he’s starting. He needs to work himself back into the rotation, seriously, but he’ll be fine.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    @ AJBALLER: You’re an idiot.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Hope for a T-Mac plays and drops 30 tonight and the Knicks beat the C’s.

  • http://www.zsmart.blogspot.com Zach Smart

If Nate lights it up tonight, what will be D’Antoni’s response?
He clearly never takes accountability for his own actions, saying things like
“there’s a lot of spirit that when out of this dog and were just not fighting”

I’m sure they love playing a guy whose spotty substitution patterns make no sense,
who doesn’t communicate with any of his players and doesn’t know who he’s
going to play and who he’s going to sit, a smug idiot who spends half the game
arguing with the refs and finding a scapegoat. He is a clown.

It must be nice, knowing that the only reason he’s being kept around
is because LBJ and Joe Johnson are supposedly tight with him. It’s a mystery to
most people, given he has the personality of a chalkboard. He is more garbage
    than a DPW system.

It’s an easy job, however, when you got Jon “Jersey Shore” Supranowitz (not for nothing dude, but aren’t
you like 40-something? Don’t you think it’s time you take yourself a little more seriously
and not try to emulate someone you’re not?) and his goons cutting off reporters with a “thanks mike”
while this cat waits for his next paycheck and watches the team drown in self-doubt.

Only reason to watch a Knick game is to hear Clyde kill it ‘the neophyte hell bent on going to the cup’ “previously it was lee tantalizing along the baseline” “going through the picks with gusto”

  • Jon

wow u guys. he takes 22+mil a year and there are sooo many people who feel sorry for him. shit, damange my left knee and give me 22mil someone!

  • http://slamonline.com dmonz

    attack athletics: Tim Grover

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

I have the same issues in my knee as T-Mac does. It’s not the impact that causes the pain and swelling as much as it is the right-left jarring in the joint itself. A brace will help with that a little, but won’t stop the problem.
Honestly, if I were him I’d be thinking hard about the rest of my life about now.

  • http://www.zsmart.blogspot.com Zach Smart

Clyde is killing it right now
He is the best broadcaster, hands down, that’s ever walked God’s Green Earth.
And Bill Walker has more big ups than a Rudeboy dude is promising
and quite the neophyte as well.

Rondo had a banger that could very make SLAM-A-Da-Month
    but we shall see

    Knicks still in this

  • http://www.zsmart.blogspot.com Zach Smart

    Clyde is the man
    His wordplay is unmatched
He makes every game a thriller, even if the knicks
    are getting bludgeoned by 40
neophythe is beginning to perculate along the baseline
    “Quite an auspicious start”
    He is sick with it
Bill Walker has more big ups than a rudeboy mon, and I think
he will be good if he develops over time he is still raw and

  • The Philosopher

The players today aren’t made like they used to be. We have guys getting manicures, pedicures, facials, etc. I mean, facials? Come on. They should be models, or something. I guess some dudes just want to be pretty while playing ball.

  • The Philosopher

I wonder if Tyrone Hill ever got facials? What about Oakley?

  • al

anyone ever see that bubble boy episode from
seinfeld? anyone care to fill in the blanks?

  • Boogie

Slam needs to stop posting bulls**t headlines. He is not hurt again and he played tonight in Boston and looked pretty ok. This is getting pretty annoying slam, i know u want hits but in the long term you will piss off your customers and eventually your website will lose its credibility, as well as its readership, as your magazine already is, albeit for entirely different reasons..

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

yeah. fu(k those sensationalist headlines. this sh1t looks like tmz.

  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3357407353_c868c2d95c.jpg larrylegend

trade TMAC for STAT…oh, damn, too late

  • Sturm Drang

Well, at least TMac and Yao are no longer in the same place… Maybe they’ll stop attracting “injure me” karmic vibes that attack each other now that they’re on separate teams.
