Amar’e Stoudemire Addresses ‘Retarded’ Opinions

STAT tells KTAR in Phoenix (via SRI) that he doesn’t care for those who think he’s playing well simply because he wants a new, giant deal: “On what he emphasized improving on this season: ‘I said it before the season, my emphasis this year was to improve defensively.  That was my goal to come back as a better defensive player.  With me not being able to play all summer, to have any time to work on it, I think through training camp, through playing, and through experience this season, it allowed me to improve after every game.  I think that’s where I’ve improved the most this year is defensively.’ On what he would say to the people who believe he is playing this way because he wants a max contract: ‘I would say they are simply retarded and they haven’t been watching my career at all since I’ve been in the league.  Ever since I’ve been in the league, I’ve been improving every single summer.  Getting myself in total top shape, focusing on winning a championship, getting through those playoffs runs, and coming back with force and reckless abandon.  I’ve been improving every single year, after the All Star break I’ve been improving, so if they think I’m just playing for a contract, they’re out of their minds.”’

    that’s Amar’e: elevating and detonating

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

“Retarded” was a poor word choice, Amare.

  • T-Money

Yeah… could have phrased it better.

  • JoeMaMa

“Simply retarded” is like saying “heartbreakingly wack”. The two words just seem at odds…

“and coming back with force and reckless abandon” That’s an actual quote? Really?

I just knew people (sorry to say, but with “people” I actually meant “Americans”) would be offended by the word “retarded”. He doesn’t mean anything by it, come on now.

  • Sparty’s Law

Anyone who has a problem with this is retarded.

  • http://www.another48minutes.com Gerard Himself

thank you Sparty, that sums it up.

  • Tommy Patron

Hold on, I have a HUGE problem with Amar’e claiming he’s improved his defense. In order to improve at something, one needs to have done it before.

  • The D Train

I was just having a conversation with a buddy this past weekend. As young bucks on the playground we used to refer to things or people that were whack as “gay” or “retarded”. With the ultra-PC world that we live in, even using those terms to describe, say, a horrible call by a ref, is call for massive scrutiny and shame-on-you’s. Amare is about the same age as me. When you grow up using those terms to describe your surroundings, you don’t always tie them to the more literal meanings. Poor use of the term, sure. But someone just tells the young man, “hey dude, not a good choice of words” and let the 27 year old man make a decision on how to frame his comment next time. It’s utterly ridiculous the way we take a persons innocuous comments and slant the meaning to set off our negative-reaction-sensors. Gerard is spot-on on this one.

    Thats Gay

  • The Philosopher

He’s saying that people who are retarded are out of their minds. Read the quote.

  • Rob

It may be wrong, but that’s just something everyone says. Don’t make a big deal about it.

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com Teddy-the-Bear

D Train: Just because you used the word “gay” as a little schoolboy insult when you were little, does NOT mean you should use it now. Wow, that was a pretty ridiculous comment you made. Imagine Southern racists who lived during segregation saying, “Hey, we used the word n***er when we were kids, and them ch**ks and them f*gs and them k**ks. They shouldn’t make a big deal out of it, because we don’t mean it LITERALLY!”
Get the f*ck out of here with that. It’s utterly ridiculous the way you try and defend the use of slurs just because ignorant little kids use them. If you still sound the way you did in Grade 5 something is wrong with you.

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com Teddy-the-Bear

And I don’t mean that personally. Anyone in generally.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Who cares!!!

  • Stillballin

That’s not fair to say that about him.. Because he was always a good player..but all the players in the league is playing there heart out every game to have a better contract.. It’s only right..

  • The D Train

Teddy…I don’t use those terms anymore, and thanks for noting that your comment wasn’t a personal attack. Your last sentence goes a long way to making the point I was trying to make: sometimes these cats are not the most intelligent people in the world, but they’re still grown men. I mentioned that Amare made a bad choice in his choice of words, but we have to take it with a grain of salt. There is such a thing as intent, and my main point was that we too often take a comment such as Amare’s and blow it into something the originator never intended. And although it may be coming down the tracks, we are not at a point in our country where racial slurs can be compared to calling someone or something “retarded”. Amare will catch far less flack for this than an athlete would for dropping the n-bomb or any other racial slur.

  • The D Train

Also, Teddy, please note that not at one point did I defend Amare’s use of the term. On the contrary, I stated, “Poor use of the term, sure.” Not sure how ridiculous my statements are, as that is subjective, but at least don’t slant my words to fit your argument.

i’m not trying to make a big deal out of the word “retarded.” i know that unfortunately people have grown up using it carelessly, and that’s why i’m not saying he needs to be ripped apart for it. i just wish that society in general would be more conscious of the fact that when you call someone “retarded” as an insult, you’re insulting people who suffer from mental retardation.

  • vanillagorrila

people who refer to disabled men and woment as suffering from mental retardation are more ignorant and insulting than those who use the word with no implications towards those with disabilities, just like f@g doesn’t really have any relation to homosexuals anymore, just a simple word for those with limited vocabularies.

  • MikeC.

@vanillagorilla – Thank you. My sister-in-law is autistic, and she isn’t fazed by the word ‘retarded’. I asked her once why it doesn’t bother her, and she said “It’s because I’m not retarded, I’m autistic.” Point made. One could say that Amare’s use of the word ‘retarded’ is entirely on point in this context. The non-slang definition of ‘retarded’ is: to be delayed or hindered. Those who haven’t recognized Amare’s demolition of the league this year are, actually, retarded in their understanding of his game. Their recognition is delayed and has been hindered by the past interpretations of his game.

Do people not see a connection to Amare calling people retarded and the actually meaning of the word? He’s saying people are DUMB for thinking he was only playing well cause of his contract, these people are DUMB… He knows exactly what the word means. He’s not using it in any other way.
I wonder how many of you would react if JJ Reddick referred to a reporters thinking as “very black” or “very Jewish”
I hope someone’s there to yell at y’all when you jump on JJ because “JJ used it as a kid” and “JJ’s an adult, it’s a poor choice of word but let him speak and use his own terms”
The average SLAM commentator must be around 13 and a half.

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

I swear, Mark Cuban calling Kenyon Martin a PUNK is extremely inexcusable and racist… but Amare calling people retarded… that’s cool…

  • barnabusb

    @jukai: I’m actually 11 and a half, you retard.

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

    barnabusb: Touche.

  • Ronald

Erm, what is wrong with the word retard anyway? It’s literally calling someone slow. And it seems to fit the context perfectly.

  • http://www.asdf.com Fred34

    Don’t feed the linguistic fascists.

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

Ronald: only as a verb, but whatever, I’m done with this. It’s fine to joke or whatever, honestly it is, but if people actually don’t see why this is WRONG, I can’t help, it’s too obvious.

you tell em STAT. And as long as you in Phoenix you da man.

There are a lot of retarded drivers in Sydney. Thats an example of how i use that word every time i go for a drive.

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Thanks for clarifying, D-Train.

  • chintao

You can see from the quote that STAT was heated. If he had time to sit down, think about it, and write it out, he probably would not have used “retarded” there. As Gerard Himself points out, it is not difficult to know how certain people will (over)react.

  • mike

just don’t get why anyone uses the word retarded. its not interchangeable with stupid and it makes you look like a total tool.

  • therighttoremainsalient

didnt the black eyed peas have a song a few years back that said lets get retarded in here… and then they had /wanted to change it? just saying.
