Carmelo Anthony on Playing in NY: Why Not?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Denver and New York played a thriller of a game at the Garden last night, with Carmelo Anthony and Danilo Gallinari going toe-to-toe. Despite the Knicks being the Knicks, the building was jumping, and ‘Melo must’ve liked what he saw and heard.

Knicks GM Donnie Walsh said that he’d be willing to wait until the summer of 2011 to make a splash in the free agency pool, and following the crushing loss to the Knicks, ‘Melo was asked about the possibility of playing in Gotham in a couple of years.

Anthony told the Denver Post that he wouldn’t necessarily have a problem with it:

Melo scored a game-high 36 points, but after the game he was clearly affected by the loss — he kept the New York media waiting nearly 40 minutes while he meticulously showered and dressed in the training room, digesting the reality of what happened. When Anthony came out, he talked about the gall of Gallinari, who was trash-talking with the all-star. And he also discussed the not-so-ambiguous comments Knicks president Donnie Walsh made to the New York Post, suggesting that even though the Knicks have money to spend this summer, they are looking at rebuilding over the next couple years — and Melo could be available after 2011.

“I really don’t know what’s going to happen the next year,” Anthony said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I don’t see why anybody wouldn’t want to play here in New York.”

Terrific. As though New York’s free agent circus wasn’t crazy enough before Melo’s name entered the conversation.

Being a Knicks fan is tough. It’s going to become even tougher, and immeasurably more nerve-racking over the next several months.

good news for knick fans. also good news for knick fans was gallinari’s performance last night. he’s starting to look like he can be there go-to guy in a close game like last night’s.

As much hope as all this cap space seems to be for us Knicks fans, I have a huge feeling that these guys are just dangling carrots.

Given Kenyon’s health and both him and Chauncey’s age it kind of makes sense that he may want to weigh his options for the future. By the way, The Rooster offically gained my respect last night, going blow for blow with Melo in the second half.

  • Fat Lever

This is going to be hilarious if NYK don’t land anyone. The Knicks are like the girl who continuously flirts with everyone, trying to smash just once, and ends up leaving alone because they’re such a tease.

lmao @ Fat Lever. So true!
And in all honesty, it’s looking exactly like that’s what’s going to happen.

  • vtrobot

it’s going to get tougher being a knicks fan than it has been during the past 10 years? i don’t see how that’s possible. nice job last night.

  • ConeyIslander

I’d take Mello in a heart beat!

  • neaorin

Coming soon: Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dirk Nowitzki say they they will consider the Knicks in 2011.

  • MikeC.

@Fat Lever – The Knicks aren’t the girl that leaves alone because she’s such a tease. The Knicks are the girl that ends up with a flabby, sweaty Jerome James all over her because they’ll give it up to anybody.

  • clos1881

The Knicks sound like the Bulls after the MJ era,and what big name free agents they get?

  • MikeC.

@clos1881 – They cashed in on the Ron Mercer and Eddie Robinson turd sandwich.

Not Happening… dont waste ur breath people

exactly meloman. I mean: look what he has now and look what he would have when he’d play for the Knicks. The Knicks have no one after this season. Sure, they have cap space, but after one or two stars, will they have enough for some quality role players? Look at what Melo has now: Billups (a star in his own right), Nene, and a supporting cast of Martin, Andersen, J.R. Smith, Ty Lawson… no way the Knicks can have a team like this after the summer. No way.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

The knicks aren’t that far off from respectability. They have some pieces in there and they will land at least 1 big name this summer. I wanna see how D’Antoni’s system really works with a player other than Steve Nash. I think it’ll be successful. It’s still the no. 1 market and starving for a winner. In 2 years they’re gonna be a 50 win team again.

  • AL29

I think just about every NBA player would “consider” playing anywhere, and would say so if asked by the press.

  • smiles

and it certainly won’t hurt his chances of getting a better supporting cast in Denver

  • The D Train

Maybe Lebron signs there this year, then they sign Melo the following year. I don’t care for the Knicks or Lebron, but I love me some Melo Man Ace. Of course, on the very, very minimal chance that Lebron signs with the Bulls, I reserve the right to change my mind on him. Regardless, I would love to see Melo go to a team I like, and preferably one that isn’t in the same division as the Blazers.

  • T-Bluff

I aint mad at either sides. I luv the knicks, and if we could get melo tht would b a steppin stone 4 the team. Cuz im tired off wcthn the knicks gettin beat up. So get a nice fre agent ths year and campain 4 melo n 11

  • LA Huey

Man, glad I jumped on the Gallo bandwagon in November. He’s showing signs of being the baller he was advertised to be and now he’s taking it to Melo?

  • Sparty’s Law

Melo will not leave a very good Nuggets team to go to a very bad Knicks team. Maybe, and only maybe, if Bosh or Amare go to the Knicks first.

  • Rob

D’antoni would bench him. He’s THAT dumb.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

This is the best Denver will be for the next half a decade atleast. Their guys are getting older, and the cap is getting lower. Melo hitching his career to Denver would be a very risky career move.

  • Dallas

The fans in NY already love him.

  • barnabusb

Why wouldn’t he want to play in New York? Because they’re GARBAGE. Despite the fans, and the media, and the endorsement options, your supporting cast will consist of Toney Douglas, Bill Walker, and Eddie Curry. Awesome.

  • knickabocka

lmao at all the haters. the knicks suck, yet everybody is all ready shaking in there boots in anticipation.

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com/ Teddy-the-Bear

    Sadly, co-sign Rob.

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com/ Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign CB34. Oh man, it’s a long time coming for Knick fans. We haven’t had one good New York ball club since 2000.

  • O

Suuuuure. The Knicks WILL get Lebron or Melo….. when they’re WASHED UP! This is the same teams that got “superstars” like Penny Hardaway, Larry Johnson, Antonio Mickey-D, Glen Rice, The Franchise, Chris Childs (That was like signing a SOBER Lil’ Wayne to a record deal), Mutombo; Keith Van Horn, Clearance Weatherspoon; and recently, Tracy McGrady. We’ve gotten goo dudes like Allen Houston (when he was healthy); Derek Harper; Charles Oakley & Sprewell (after he choked his coach). But The LAST great baller we had; Patrick Ewing. NYC misses you, homie…
