Craig Hodges: Lakers Kiss Kobe’s Ass

Great, candid interview from ESPN with the immortal Craig Hodges: “Leaning back in a recliner as he watches the game on a wall-mounted television — a nice TV, but not obscenely large or anything — with his 24-year-old son, Jamaal, and 26-year-old nephew, Mike Riggins, the honesty spouts from Hodges’ lips with the same purity as his picture-perfect jump shot as he answers my questions and offers his observations during the game. He’s agreed to have me over to watch the game with him so that I can see what he sees. ‘No,’ Hodges says flatly when I ask him at one point in the first half if any players on the team stand up to Kobe Bryant and critique him if he does something detrimental to the team. On this occasion it was Bryant not sprinting back on defense after turning the ball over with a bad pass. ‘Not one. They all kiss his a–.’ I follow up by asking whether anybody on the Bulls teams that he won rings with in 1991 and 1992 ever called out Michael Jordan, a similar ball-dominant, once-in-a-generation talent with just as domineering a personality as Bryant. Hodges looked at me straight in the eye, slowly raised his hand like he had the correct answer at school and broke into a wide smile.”

Where can I find the rest of this article?

  • Jer Boi

link to the article is the first three words

  • Hangtime Hec

Yeah but it brought me somewhere else. I found it though.

I read it, and Craig is really telling it how it is. Haha, he doesn’t censor himself, and still is passionate about what he sees. Fun and interesting interview.

It was a great read. Didnt know espn had quality stuff like this.

That was a great article, but the fact that NBA superstars get their butts kissed by their teammates is hardly a revelation. Is there a star who is regularly stood up to by teammates/management?

  • Ghost (of Craig Hodges)

    Craig Hodges sighting!

  • peter

I don’t understand whether the “slowly raised his hand” part meant he was the only one who stood up to Jordan, or that he was joking he had to raise his hand to say something in the Bulls locker room???

  • karma

he was the only one who stood up to MJ.

really, no superstar gets questioned when they are at the Kobe/Lebron/Wade/MJ level.

pau has been sniping at Kobe consistently this season though, though Kobe has not said anything.

  • LA Huey

Does he still wear a dashiki?

  • The D Train

Medical Bill stood up to MJ. It was in The Jordan Rules. Don’t remember exactly because I haven’t read that book in about 7 years, but I seem to remember Jordan pissing off Cartwright in a scrimmage and Cartwright telling him that if he ever did “that” again, he’d take him out. Unfortunately I can’t remember what “that” was, and I’m too damn lazy to look it up.

  • The Philosopher

Craig Hodges was another great, great shooter.

  • Rob

I don’t look at it as kissing his ass. It’s more like they being afraid of him, because they know if they stand up to Kobe they’ll have to back it up from that moment on, every single day and every single play. If they screw up once Kobe’s gonna get their necks and never let go. An example of ass kissing is the Cavs and Lebron. Shaq is particularly good at it.

  • logues

    so does James the Balla

More significantly, Hodges says that Bynum is the best center in the league. “Hodges doesn’t say the 22-year-old Bynum is going to be the best center in the league, he says he already is.

I rattle off Bynum’s competition: Dwight Howard, Amar’e Stoudemire, Yao Ming, Chris Kaman. Hodges hears every name and continues to stare at me with the same blank expression, waiting for me to mention somebody he’d agree was better than No. 17 for the purple and gold.”

    That should stir some controversy.

If Hodges gets heat for this from the Lakers or Kobe, this will be a prime example of why you don’t do candid interviews: because you will talk about hundred different things, including how you think Bynum is the best center and that you respect Kobe’s game to the utmost, and still, other outlets will pick it up and put the headline “Craig Hodges: Lakers Kiss Kobe’s Ass”. I ain’t mad atcha, Slam, I’m just saying, Craig, you shouldn’t have been this candid.

@Jackie Moon: because quoting out of context is what media is the best at.

@albie1kenobi But like I said, I’m not mad at the media, that’s what they’re supposed to do, generate some buzz and attract attention, in addition to reporting the news. Craig should know that.

Craig Hodges is always candid. Anyone who knows his career and history knows the dude isn’t afraid to say anything to anyone. Even to the president of the united states.

  • therighttoremainsalient

    craig hodges the original alien.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

it’s all good. he is true to himself. it hasn’t helped his career, but at least he’s not fake.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Guess who agrees? Me! But you sort behind of the man who controls the entire team. Kobe is a fixture in the Lakers organization. Phil has left and been replaced. Fisher has left and been replaced. Pau could leave, they have replaced big men before. They cant lose Kobe though, so he holds all the cards.

Really like the longer, more in-depth stories. Props to ESPN for this one.

So does Slam, since Kobe has been on the cover of the most Slam issues. Right?

  • Papa Smurf

Craig Hodge’s is one of my all time favorites. I patterned my game after him – lots of 3′s, no D

Rob what kind of comment was that? I see what you’re insinuating…

  • TEddy-the-Bear

Seed, you were being sarcastic but you’re actually right.

Same dude that Jordan terrorized in practice and rode during games. How did Jordans a** taste Craig! Just do what Phil hired you to do (help us shoot the 3 better), and shut your trap.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

James the balla knows how Kobe’s ass taste

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Like your mothers d1ck!

  • Randy Brown

I think it was Craig Hodges that criticised Alan Houston and Reggie Miller for wanting to comeback to the League. He said he was the only one who still had game. You never did have game Craig, just a jump shot. I remember Jordan’s comment about Hodges trying to defend the Pistons, “They were posting him up soon as he stepped off the bus”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Hodges unwillingness to find Jordan’s buttocks with his lips might have contributed to his failing to find a job late in his career.
Everybody on the Lakers is scared of Kobe, except maybe Ron Artest, and Artest is freaking crazy so he doesn’t count.
That said, it’s unfortunate that his Kobe quote will get all the press because the interview was very good as a whole and he had a lot of insight and knowledge about the game.

  • bill breedley

i respect this candid interview. good to finally read an espn interview that is not just about the same old usual fluff. great read.

  • European Idiot

Can someone please fire the idiot who put together the hideous headline? This was a quite refreshing article, well up with Alan Paul´s golden pieces of old, yet you take one sentence out of context. SLAM, you guys used to be better than that.

  • http://wealwayswin.net Hersey

Good read, nice to hear from Hodges. Don’t agree on the Bynum being the best center in the league. Even though Bynum has better touch, Dwight’s numbers don’t lie and teams don’t scheme to stop Bynum.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Hersey. Howard over Bynum is not even debatable.

  • chintao

Blackballed?!??! Get these blackballs! Hodges ruined his chances of being connected to the NBA long ago. He has nothing to lose by continuing to be honest. The League robbed him of some precious playing years, possibly a few championship rings, and a fair amount of money. It could not take his dignity, though.

  • chintao

… oh, sorry… he’s shooting coach for the Lakers now? Whose ass did he have to kiss to get that job?

  • Ayiyiyiyiyiyi

chintao, mine. You got a problem?

  • chintao

LOL. Not at all. I’d probably kiss your ass to get that job, too.

  • RyandC

gimme ur address Ayiyiyiyiyiyi, and get those butt cheeks ready coz i wanna be assistant coach. didnt bill cartwright get punched in the face for standing up to mj?
