Dear Reggie Miller

A Winning Time Review.

by Matt Lawyue / @mlawyue

After Winning Time aired Sunday night, a lot of people Winning Timehit me up on my cell, Twitter and Facebook.

Did you watch it? What did you think? Did it hurt? How bad did it hurt? Don’t you hate Reggie? 18.7? Finger roll? Brain-fart? Starks, Spike, Mase, Patrick, Patrick, Mase, Spike, Starks.

I collectively gave a “haha, it was good” response to everybody, masking my real feelings about the documentary.

About 24 hours after the hype died down, I sat down to write a post about it. My true feelings towards Reggie and Winning Time

Reggie is going to be my first topic.

Everything else is second.

Granted, there were a lot of players in those battles.

Grinding this post out is going to be tough.

I have to get it done.

Even though I don’t want to write the typical:

Stop showing this,

The current Knicks suck,

Only if we could turn back time,

People could be passionate about,

Screaming for their Knicks again.

Minutes are going by and I still don’t know where to begin.

I decide I should get some snacks before I start.

Love those Oreos.

If you don’t like Oreos, you don’t like food.

Nearly every Oreo has a perfect combination of

Gobs of cream and cookie.

You have to be nuts to dislike Oreos.

Obviously there are other good cookies.

Usher just came on my iTunes shuffle.

Really, really awful performance during the All-Star game.

Even his biggest fan thought he sucked.

Shakira did her thing though.

Carefree, was how to describe her performance.

Albeit, nobody paid attention to her singing.

Really difficult time getting my thoughts in order.

I thought this would be easy.

Nearly the entire time, I thought I’d write about the struggles.

God, why did Mase have such a brain-fart?

Things could have been so different,

Had he made a better pass.

Even if Reggie did commit a foul on the play.

Could Spike have shut his mouth, though?

He will say no.

I don’t really care if he did or didn’t.

Leaving Reggie with so much space was the real problem.

Damnit.

Run This Town, just came on shuffle.

Enjoyed the Weezy remix to this.

Now you know my real feelings about Reggie and Winning Time.

Who knows how many championships New york would have won if it hadn’t been for Reggie Miller.

Everyone on Earth uses something to motivate them to success… Some men use women who used them, women use men who treated them wrong and basketball players use other players as a bar to keep up with (Magic vs. Bird); but Reggie decided to use Spike Lee as his motivation…. It made great TV, great Theater and GREAT HOOPS!

    Thanks Spike! LMFAO!
8 Points in 8.9 Seconds…. Priceless! Great Documentary

    think about the children, whahah

  • Monstarzz

Weakest post on K and D blog yet. Usually like it too. Oh well.

  • riggs

i thought the documentary was good, its tied with The U as the best one so far in my opinion.

  • MikeC.

Reggie can say all he wants. The majority of the time, his teams lost to the Knicks. It was a pretty fun rivalry, but even as a young kid I knew those Pacer teams didn’t have what it took to win it all (deep down I knew those Knick teams didn’t have it either *quiet sob*) Shouldn’t a title like “Winning Time” be reserved for people who win, y’know, championships? “Winning Time: The Larry Bird story.” Or “Winning Time: Running with Magic.” Or “Winning Time: It Seems to Happen Everywhere I Go, Featuring Robert Horry.”

  • riggs

in context of the documentary, winning time was basically being clutch at the end of the game.

  • MikeC.

@riggs – I haven’t actually seen the show yet. A friend DVR’d it for me. I just hate Reggie Miller and want to drive over his face with my car.

Thank you larrylegend. You can ride shotgun. When it’s time to reverse and repeat, you can take the wheel.

The Knicks are my favorite franchise of all time and the 90′s squads were my favorite teams of all time. But Reggie Miller has always been one of my favorite NBA players. Just a great, great player and always clutch. He played hard, kicked much @ss, and made for one heck of a rivalry.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Cue weird and angry stares from other Knick fans.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nima Zarrabi

Anthony Mason. Wow. Looks like its been a rough road since leaving the League. He looked a little weathered during his interviews.

  • The Philosopher

If there was no Michael Jordan and Kobe, an argument can be made that Reggie Miller was the best two guard of all time. He is the greatest pure shooter in NBA history. Those who argue Bird as the greatest shooter, their argument is valid.

  • The Philosopher

Bird is an icon for the ages, but Reggie, if he would have won the ring. I know I just said Reggie is the best shooter, but Bird… Very, very good argument.

  • The Philosopher

Dale Ellis was another great, great shooter. A lot of great shooters graced the floors of the NBA. Dirk, Peja, Ray Allen, Steve Kerr, Kapono, the list goes on and on. World B. Free, Bob McAdoo, Hal Greer. Mark Price.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Good point, Philosopher.

    Teddy-the-Bear: Thanks.

@monstarzz – I see you. Appreciate the honesty.

  • http://slamonline.com Matt Lawyue

@Nima – The times I’ve covered Knicks games, Mase has been there. “Weathered” is putting it nicely haha

  • chintao

Goddamn that Reggie Miller; Damn him to Hell.

  • http://www.hoopistani.com Hoopistani

    and oreos are THE BEST

  • MikeC

@Teddy – I’m staring at you in a way that is both weird and angry.

  • MikeC

At this point, I’m not sure which Reggie Miller I hate more: Reggie the player, or Reggie the announcer. I think I have to go with Reggie the announcer. Reggie the player was limited to only ruining Pacer games. There is no limit to the games that can be ruined by Reggie the announcer. Reggie isn’t as bad as Chuck Swirksy, who seems intent on inventing new slang every time he’s on the air. Reggie is the king of using the wrong word that sounds kinda close to the word he means to use. I’ve been enjoying how Kobe has ‘garnished’ the respect of his peers the last couple seasons. I have a mental picture of Kobe rubbing mustard and ketchup all over the respect of his peers. Thank you Reggie. I hate you a little less.

  • hillbilly

I watched a lot of college hoops this past weekend, so I got to see the promo for this about eight hundred times. Now, for some strange reason, I can’t get “Mama Said Knock You Out” by LL Cool J out of my skull. Thanks, ESPN.

MikeC your comment cracked me up

  • IndyStar

One of the greatest rivalries ever. The Director is such a weasel for ending the Doc by showing the Knicks winning in 1999 under the end credits without showing Reggie coming right back in 2000 and advancing to the Finals in the Garden in Game 6. For a Doc made about Reggie that is just tasteless to deliberately do that because you are a Knicks fan, wow unbelievably tasteless end to a really good Doc. He included every year below except the last one, the one where Reggie advanced to the Finals with a win in the Garden lol. LAME

    1993- Knicks(Pacers sucked wasn’t a rivalry yet)
    1994- Knicks
    1995- Pacers
    1998- Pacers
    1999- Knicks
    2000- Pacers
