Does Hedo Turkoglu Lack Toughness?

The Hedo Experiment has not gone over well in Toronto, leading fans and media alike to direct much of their frustration at Turkoglu. The latest complaint is about his willingness to play through pain and illness. From the Globe and Mail: “Like I said, there’s every chance that he was really, really sick. But fair or not, Turkoglu doesn’t have much credibility on the issue. This is a big problem. It may be an image problem, but it’s a real problem nonetheless. All pro athletes really want from the teammates is for them to perform. Be an ass? Fine. Pout? Fine. Whine about your contract? Fine. If you play hard and practice hard and help your teammates reach their goals? All is forgiven. Do none of those things but don’t play hard, well and consistently? The nicest guy in the world will get ostracized pretty quick. Hedo seems like a genial guy, quick with a smile, friendly, all of that. And you can make the case that he has, in some hard-to-define way made the Raptors better: Bosh is having a career season, Bargnani too. Could it be because Turkoglu has made the game easier for them with a flurry of Gretzky assists? Maybe. But it’s just as hard to make the case that the $53-million man has his teammates’ backs and will go to war with them and for them, because he hasn’t so far and it’s getting pretty late for him to prove that he will. Kind makes you feel queasy.”

Dude’s picture is in wikipedia’s entry for “toughness”. Well…until someone caught my edit and changed it.

  • Sparty’s Law

    Oh yeah

  • Sparty’s Law

He’s had maybe 3 or 4 good games that I can recall this year. Most nights he is just a total no-show. He’s probably become a bit too much of a whipping boy in the media, because others are to blame too, but he deserves about 95% of the criticism he is getting. Dude’s a joke.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    He lacks…ball

  • rish

    ball.

I mean, he’s European. So, obviously.

  • Homie

    Yes, coach.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

lol at anton and: are the Nets a disgrace for professional bball?!is KG a frontrunnig trashtalkin piece of sh1t former GREAT PF?!is Lebron a cocky as sh1t traveling machine super human athlete?! i think the turks question is answered..he also seems lazy and heartless in T-Dot, and hes been shooting bad and all that but is his defense that is atrocious. glad Portland missed that!

  • MikeC.

Nobody on the Raptors roster is allowed to call out anybody else for lack of toughness. With the exception of Reggie Evans, the Raps’ roster 1 through 12, is one of the softest in the entire league. They repeatedly get punked by tougher teams. Talent-wise, the Raps have a pretty decent team, but they get pushed around and taken out of the game. Bring back Oakley!!!

  • kash

Wait, are we talking about Vince or Hedo?

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    YES HE IS!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    Biggest waste of money.

  • chingy

Worst signing of the year? I think so.

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

Friend of mine flew to Toronto to watch the Raptors and was genuinely pissed about seeing Hedo play like a drugaddict.

  • Logues

i wouldnt say that its the worst signing of the year. i mean, yes he got paid way too much even if he had a good yr, but he had a great yr last yr, so who wouldnt of expected him to have even a better or atleast same yr with the raps?

  • matt

I was on some raptors blogs when they played the jazz and some fans said he had “effortitis”

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

He was just a way better fit in Orlando and he’s getting older. The combination of those two things = the travesty that is Toronto Hedo.

  • reezy

The raptors ability to suck comes from a stupid rotation they play 11 guys sometimes. Get ur best 8 or 9 and everyone else should just shut up if they dont play.turk just looks kinda heavy and slow this year, if he doesnt play for his national team(he prolly will) and trains in the summer he’ll be back to his normal self.

  • rashado

    ball

  • http://missjia.com meloMan2.0

    lol @ Anton

  • kudos

“Hedo was great last year”" That right there, shows how much little fans have knowledge. Orlando had a stacked team, one that hedo, shard, or jameer would take the last clutch shot. Hedo?? The thing that sticks most in my mind is him not even jumping to block lebron’s 3-point prayer (and 4-0) that he shot in his face. I mean cmon, a 6-11 guy who can’t even jump??!? With no defense to boot? I could see this coming a mile away, and orlando’s much better than they were last year for it.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Last year they said he was the toughest cat on the Magic’s team.
What he lacks is the ability to shine without dominating the ball. The same thing he lacked in Orlando.
    Where is Z?

  • The Philosopher

Hedo Turkoglu was never really a “tough” player. He was always a “skill” player. And, Hedo seems to be in that mold of guys who become less hungry after the contract. He’s content now.

  • AL29

Huge, huge bust. How could anyone have thought he was worth this much money, especially with the looming salary reductions, knowing even good players won’t be making that much money under the new CBA. I can’t believe Portland and Toronto were fighting for this loser. Can you imagine Kevin Pritchard’s chances of keeping his job had Turkoglu actually joined the Blazers? Now we’re stuck with his massive salary for 4 more years. *&%$! Turkoglu, Bargniani, and Calderon… there’s a tough core of players.

  • The Philosopher

Hedo Turkoglu is Detlef Schrempf. Shout out to Vern Fleming, since I brought up a former Pacer.

  • http://twitter.com/PDXGayBBall dma

Turk would have been a better fit in Portland. And instead of signing Andre Miller aka the walking injury curse, Oden would still be playing, and playing at a higher level. But I’m torn about it since it would have dwarfed Nic Batum’s play time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/03/does-hedo-turkoglu-lack-toughness/ Mike

^What do Dre & Hedo have 2 do with Oden being injured?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

dma believes Andre Miller emits some injury inducing toxins…

  • ClydeSays

Pretty sure Hedo doesn’t include ‘toughness’ in his resume.

Shooter, with some passing skill and ability to create occasionally. Period.

Raps seemed to want to be the Suns East, so they assembled shooters. Made some sense. Toughness? Not part of the package.

  • http://slamonline.com S.Man

    The simple answer is yes.

  • http://slamonline.com S.Man

I can’t stand players that can’t play D, Hedo being one of them, same with Jose and…forget it, too many to name on the Raptors.

  • bails1

@ dma im pretty sure you meant oden is the walking injury curse because andre miller is simply never out because of an injury. check how you worded it man.

  • Shem

CO-SIGN ANTON AHHA, Ive havent missed a raps game this year. He’s come up clutch 3 times against minni, LA and NY. 3 games for 50 mill. Hedo’s gotta lay off the pizza and sprite and start earning that paycheck. He said his main goal was 2 be an all-star, now that bothers me. Also, we coulda got a younger, better on both sides of the court as well as hustling for just as much as we got the lazy turkish fella

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

    is the sky blue?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Let me see… DUHHHHHHHH

  • Kyle

This is a weird article. Don’t all of the Raptors lack toughness? I don’t recall Hedo selling himself to teams for his grit, and ability to impose his will on the other team by fouling hard and banging under the basket for 12 rebounds a game.

He was great for Orlando, because he was perfect for their system. Now he’s on a team with a bunch of soft players who play no D, and he doesn’t get to handle the ball enough. Toronto was stupid for signing him. He would be a perfect fit for a few teams, and they weren’t one of them. So blame Toronto for this “bust.”

  • T-Money

Hedo doesn’t lack toughness. He is playing in a system that’s not suited for his skill set. He doesn’t really need a lot of shot attempts but he is very ball dominant. It worked in Orlando last year because nobody in the starting unit knew how to break his man down. It has failed miserably in Toronto because both point guards are actually run the offense. You don’t need Hedo if your pg can set up plays, he doesn’t offer anything in terms of movement without the ball.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Is T-Money the same person as Z?! Or is he not?!

  • Joey E.

    Hedon’t

  • Johnson

yeah hedo prolly would have been a good fit in portland, he can run the point better than bayless plus blake worked well off ball which would give turk more opportunities to work. The blazers were looking for someone who could create their own shot and get to the line when he needs to. Its a shame, turk would have probably been that offensive threat we need still and his game looks like the perfect compliment to what batum offers.

  • somedude

Is it just me, or is the media around Toronto really, really combative?

  • iLL wiLL

What a waste of money for us. This guy is locked up for another 4 seasons. Impossible to deal his sorry ass.

  • Shem

Calderon, Jack both control the O, especially in the 4th. Hedo missed last nights game because he was sick. I’ve rarely seen players miss games if they we’re sick unless it’s a stomach flu. Hedo had a cold and this is the 3rd time he’s missed a game because he was sick

  • ave. joe

Should have tried to sign Linas Kleiza instead. Also this is not ave joe

  • ConeyIslander

The Majority of European ballers are softer than baby sh*t!

  • http://twitter.com/PDXGayBBall dma

@bails1 no i worded it correctly. andre miller has caused injury to Oden, Pryzbilla, Batum, Outlaw, Rudy and BRoy since coming over. Prior to that it was Elton Brand and Marcus Camby, and I’m sure tons more. Soon as Camby and Miller stopped playing together, Camby all of a sudden became an iron-man. Same goes for Kenyon Martin. OK that’s stretching it.

  • http://twitter.com/PDXGayBBall dma

Why do you think Andre Miller and LeBron never played a game together in Cleveland? They saw what happened with Big Z!

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out to Acie Earl.

  • GBaby

Big newsss! the guy who sits behind three point line and shoots is being questioned for toughness hmmm

moar like hedon’t, amirite guys? ahahaahahhahah

he has a case of the “efortitis”

  • Buschfire

its not the physical toughness i care about. we all no he’s no tough guy, but mentally this guy is weaksauce.

  • Dan

Bringing Hedo was a desperation move by Colangelo to keep Chris in town. Turns out that this will be the biggest mistake made by Colangelo so far. One that may cost him his job.

Bosh will be gone, and Hedo is here for a long time :(

What to do with Hedo? I would swap him (+ fillers) for Arenas straight up. I mean, what’s there to lose?

  • Buschfire

Hedo for Arenas? fat chance…. lol the most we’ll get for him would be the Laker Girls. which I would happily prefer to watch rather then him on our team.

  • Aaron

This is a rhetorical question right?

  • dillon

its funny how one year ago we were all amazed at how turkoglu sparked his team to get to the finals and his point forward play will make any team better… now he is the whipping boy and the joke of the NBA… funny how one season can change a guy’s image so much, people forget he did help a struggling magic team to the finals(w/o jameer), he has toughness, just dont know where it went…
