Fans to Vote in MVP Award Selection

Inside Hoops has the news that fans will now have a vote (just one, thankfully) in deciding who the League MVP is: “The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced that, for the first time ever, fans will have the opportunity to help determine the winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player award.  Through a dedicated Web page on NBA.com, fans can submit their votes for MVP, ranking their top five choices. The combined fan vote will count as one vote, with the remaining 124 votes coming from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The 2009-10 NBA Most Valuable Player of the Year Award will be announced following the conclusion of the 2009-10 NBA regular season.”

So now MVP voting will always include one vote to Yao Ming or another Rocket

  • neaorin

Meh, it’s one vote out of 125. People will get the illusion that they’re influencing the outcome while the actual decision is still made by the big boys. Much like elections actually.

Oh great!!! Yao and Tracey will go down to the wire yet again!!! Stats and team position should determine who gets what. Fans are voting from overseas and who has the best mobile phone commercials nowadays.

Everybody vote for Durant he deserves it. He improved his game and made his team way better. Or vote for Kobe he is a beast Mr.Clutch.

  • Jon

Chill people. 1 out of 125 is worth nothing yet makes some idiot feel almighty and influential in the voting.

  • J.C.

  • wei

so what, P.J. Brown got one vote back in 2005. I love this idea, 1 out 125 is a nice try.

  • Jonny C

personally, i say kevin durant is a good choice, though i say lebron deserves the award this year, with kobe next in line (and no, im not saying that just because im a kobe fanatic, i say that in all fairness). i love allen iverson, hes probably my favorite player ever, and yeah i voted him into the allstar game, but i would not vote him as mvp.
if anyone got the time to, check out yahoo.com, on the front page they have an article about this story, and ironically enough the picture for the headline is of a bunch of chinese fans. coincidence? i dont think so

  • Jonny C

in the past, and almost every year, i vote iverson, garnett, barbosa, and arroyo for the all star game, but i wouldnt vote those guys for mvp, lets hope im not alone here. YAO MING FOR MVP 2009-2010!!!!!! hahaha

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

See, to some VERY fanatical basketball fans, this is a sin, since each VOTE a player receives should be recorded and honored. If Yao Ming receives a vote a year, the system is corrupted.
Me, on the other hand, don’t give a crap.
My MVP list will look like dis: Chris Anderson, Kwame Brown, DJ Mbengu, Lindsey Hunter, JJ Reddick.
    In that order.

  • DDB

I guess the fans do such a great job setting the starting line-ups in the ASG, that you almost have to allow them at least one MVP vote.

  • JHaney

MVP this year goes to Kevin Durant. He has turned OKC around and have them in the playoffs. LeBron can also be considered this year but that’s like saying Kobe can get it every year for the past seven years. Give it to Durant. He’s been more deserving and has made the biggest turn around this year for his team. LeBron is to cocky and Kobe is just being Kobe, a stone cold killer. Voting: Durant, James, Bryant, Howard, Anthony.

  • zop
