If Nets Land John Wall; Trade Devin Harris?

Magic Johnson doesn’t think the two would work well together, and tells the Star-Ledger that New Jersey would be wise to trade Devin Harris: “Q. If they get that top pick, we assume you consider John Wall a franchise-maker? MAGIC: ‘Yeah, he’s special. Not only on the court, but off the court as well. He’s one of those guys who’s got ‘it.’ I went down to Kentucky to watch him recently, and he’s just amazing. He’ll have instant impact.’ Q. But will it work pairing him with Devin Harris? MAGIC: ‘I’m not sure. If you’ve got John, you’ve got to give him the reins and build the team around him. And Devin now, it’s kind of hard for him to be from winning and experience this. No question about it, he’s still a special player. But if you have Wall, you’ve got to give him the ball.’ Q. Sounds like you’re skeptical about them playing together. MAGIC: ‘Well, you probably have to think about trading Devin, because he can bring in something good. He’s a good piece, but if you’ve got to sell tickets and build around a younger guy, you can bring in a nice piece for Devin. Maybe you try playing them together, and he can be a mentor for a while. But you can’t take the No. 1 guy — a franchise guy — and not start him.”’

It’s funny cause the worse team doesn’t always get the 1st pick.. So all this planning is useless at this point.

Trade Devin to Philly for Iguadala then sign LeBron and then you win a championship. Damn. Someone make me the GM for the Nets!

  • http://witnesstheking.blogspot.com Witness

But on a serious note they need to get LeBron. He’s the closest thing to God wanting to see some life in that team.

  • http://witnesstheking.blogspot.com Witness

It would be funny if the Warriors somehow managed to get the first pick. What would they do with all the damn versatile point guards they have?

  • Nigel

Why would the Sixers trade for Harris when they got Holiday?

  • james

wall, lebron, lopez and whatever they get for harris would make a mean team.

  • Twinparadox

It would be funnier if the Wolves got the first pick and drafted their 4th point guard (Flynn, Rubio, Lawson, Wall) in two drafts. As a miserable Wolves fan though, I hope they do get the first pick and work the mess out somehow.

John wall isnt ready for the nba

  • http://witnesstheking.blogspot.com Witness

Why wouldn’t Philly want Harris? They need some damn consistency! Holiday would make a fine back up though.

    @ Jrooks: Get off SLAM!

The Nets clearly aren’t landing the first pick.

  • neaorin

Talk about putting the cart before the horse. They’ve got a 25% chance at the first pick.

They should most def. trade Harris if they land wall. It’s kinda like the New Orleans Hornets. When Paul comes back it looks unlikely that he and Collison can play together and both be as succesful as they’ve been without each other. As such find a team that needs a PG and trade Collison for something that you need.

I have to agree w/ Nigel to an extent: that trading for Delvin w/ Jrue playing so well may not be in the teams best interest; but Delvin is a very good player and Jrue could def direct a second unit w/ a healthy Speights and Young… but the Sixers have many more needs than just @ PG… It would be hilarious if NJ ends up with the #5 pick like Boston did a few years back… They will be in desparation mode then for sure and will sell the farm for #1. (I like to see NJ honestly pick Evan Turner and making it work w/ Delvin)

Whether Wall is ready for the NBA or not is a mute question. Kid is coming and no one can stop him. Knowing how the lottery is cursed and/or hates bad teams, I don’t hold out much hope of the Nets getting him. Probably the Timberwolves will get him. They sure could use yet another PG draft pick. I’m pretty sure they haven’t used them all up yet.

Whoever “loses” the draft lottery will be in a good spot anyways. Evan Turner looks like Penny Hardaway reborn. Also, Favors is leading the nation in FG% as a Frosh after being High School POY. G’town’s Greg Monroe and the other Kentucky players look legit too.

  • LA Huey

Nets probably won’t get the 1st pick but its not like they got anything better to do in the front office than to daydream. Ship Devin’s ass out.

  • T-Money

Devin can play off the ball.

  • riggs

what difference would john wall make to that team? absolutely none.

  • kb

jrue holiday can be a starter in this league so why take devin harris if you watched the last couple weeks of the sixers he has improved greatly. plus he is only 19 and oozes poatential so why trade him. if i was the nets i would seriously consider evan turner #1 or trade back to 2 and get rid of some bad contracts

  • Farman

Why would you want to trade Devin Harris away just because you draft Wall? It’s just like the talk about making CP3 expendable just because Darren Collison is becoming a great point guard. Whatever happen to depth? Why can’t these players play together? There is nothing wrong with having too many good players. This league is turning into a 2 star team and bunch of role player rosters. I remember in the late 80′s into the mid 90′s, teams were stacked with talent. The Lakers, Celtics, Rockets, Sonics, Suns, Blazers, and etc. all were 9 to 10 players deep that probably start on any team. I think with cap room that the nets have, and landing a top 3 pick to go along with Lopez, Yi, and Harris, this team has a bright future. But the problem is, in this era of hoops and life, everyone wants to be the man or the big show!! Winning isn’t enough anymore. And it’s sad. We only have a few years left with names like Duncan, Billups, Allen, Garnett, and the rest of the class that came out from the mid 90′s. It’s gonna be interesting to see what kind of basketball we will see in the next 10 years……….

im so sick of this John Wall. so overhyped. just take Evan Turner if you’re NJ

  • J-Ro

Why not just take Evan Turner?

  • http://www.another48minutes.com Gerard Himself

Joey E.: I read today that even the Warriors would take Wall if they would get the no. 1 pick. The Nts have to get Wall, it’s as simple as that. You might be sick of him, but that doesn’t matter right now. The Nets also need to find a way to have some actual fans to The Rock next season.
Anyway, it wouldn’t work with Harris, Magic Johnson is sayin what should be obvious to all fans. You would get a Curry-Ellis type of situation. But as a Nets fan, Harris has actually played really well this month.
Then again, it’s a problem we shouldn’t worry about; it’s only a 25% chance we’d get the no. 1 pick, so I wouldn’t count on getting Wall anyway. I don’t think it will happen.

  • http://www.another48minutes.com Gerard Himself

I meant: “to get some” instead of “to have some”. My bad.

  • Shem

co-sign NiQ, The pistons got the 2nd overall pick in 2003 and they definetly weren’t the worst team. I think its a 33% chance that they ll get it if i remember correctly so the chances are that they probably won’t even get it. But they should either trade the pick and build around Harris or draft Wall and trade Harris for young talent.. tough choice

  • max

    DEVIN Harris to the lakers

  • JD

Get Wall trade Harris 4 the second pick then free agents wouldn’t be able to resist the Nets

  • slamfan4life

    Make wall a SG

  • MBE18

Knicks could sign and trade David Lee for Devin Harris. Lee and Lopez on the front line would be a nice tandem!

  • Jose

I got either washington or minny gettin wall. If wall went with Agent…6 now.that be interesting seeing that situation play out. and i havent seen any particular stand outs form the guards in minny

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

The Nets planning to draft Wall and trade Harris is simmular to the Allies dividing up Germany before World War 2 was over. LOL.

  • cramzy

probably should just take Evan Turner

  • Logues

ya evan turner should go #1

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

A guy who has broken his back last year will not be going 1st in the draft. No way.

  • clos1881

The nets should get Favors or Cousins if they can’t get Wall. Evan Turner will be a bust somebody on here just said he’s Penny reborn if thats the case he wouldn’t still be playing college ball.

  • http://www.twitter.com/retepadam Peter Nygaard

    F it.

    Draft Evan Turner.

  • Mack

Monta and Curry could do it in Golden State, why not try Wall and Harris? Harris was starting with Jason Terry in Dallas not that long ago anyway…

  • http://www.jewelzlopez.com -Mas-

Yeah Golden State’s record reflects just how good that duo works.
But the Nets need to trade for a new GM. That’s all.

  • therighttoremainsalient

I’m not one for hypothesizing too far – but who “least likely” wants/needs John Wall? GSW? They could easily have a TONNE of trading power on draft night if they pick up the rights to the first pick? Of course, the AMOUNT of money the first pick gets contract wise isn’t enough to swap him for a franchise player from elsewhere…. but you try something right? Minnesoda, New Jersey, Golden State, I bet all of these guys are ironically hoping for the 2nd pick, because a star quality F/C would help all those teams out and not create a problem by having so many pg’s.

  • therighttoremainsalient

John Wall, the first pick in the NBA draft is taken by…. SACRAMENTO KINGS!! Wall/Evans backcourt!?? Crud.

  • http://www.behindtheb.blogspot.com Sam Raphael Chadwick

I think your right – Sacramento have a very high percentage of picking up the number 1 pick and you never know when the lottery ball will land, Evans, Wall back court would be awsome!!

  • http://sevendeu2u.wordpress.com/ Seven Duece

They need to focus their attention on trading one of their many wing players for another big with at least a semblance of a game.
