Kurt Rambis on Darko Milicic’s ‘Potential’

Kurt sees things you and I don’t see, it seems. Well, that’s what he’s telling the local press corps anyway: “Early foul trouble limited Darko Milicic to 14 minutes Wednesday in his first start at center, but Rambis remains intrigued by him. ‘We’re seeing glimpses of tremendous potential for him and for us,’ Rambis said after his team practiced Thursday to prepare for Saturday’s home game against Houston. ‘He made a pass to Ramon Sessions that Ramon wasn’t even looking for, probably assuming there was no way Darko was going to get him the basketball. He has such tremendous vision and passing capabilities. We really haven’t seen an exorbitant amount of what he can do scoring, but it’s there. It’s just starting to poke out. That’s why we’re doing things in practice to encourage him to not only pass the basketball but also look for his own opportunities.”‘

Could this finally be the place where Darko becomes a star? No. But thanks for playing.

That’s gotta be the funniest paragraph I’ve read so far this year. No need to even make a joke.

Good for Darko! Im really rooting for him… If he turns into a decent player, it just makes that 04 draft class that much more talented and makes their Top 5 picks one of the best ever drafter…

I think people underestimate what being buried in Detroit’s bench did to this poor kid’s confidence. If Kurt sees something in him, great. Hope he finally lives up to his potential.

Well, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Darko was playing good basketball when he was in Orlando. He got mad blocks and he can do the same for the Wolves (Especially since Al J and Love don’t seem to get many blocks..)

Hell Darko would be a GREAT fit for even OKC. TRUST.

Go Darko! Be a great passing and scoring big and proove everybody wrong. Or proove me wrong and be a big mistake.

This is the same Kurt Rambis who for no reason is playing Big Al & Love less than 30 min a night

sigh. another ‘Darko has great potential’ story. as annual as a good Slam.

  • MikeC.

If Darko didn’t get on the court in NY, where the Knicks are in desperate need of a big man who can guard the rim and run the floor, Darko is pretty much a lost cause. Who knows, maybe now he can suck in the triangle too.

Darko has actually shown some ability as a natural shot-blocker. That said, he’s not living up to any potential, even if it’s plummeting by the season. Why isn’t he in Europe yet?

  • Sam Z

@Hussman25 its the 03 draft class…know ur bball before u speak

  • Hussman25

    Sorry Sam Z??? A year off??? LOL… U funny

We need a good center on my rec league team. With Darko’s size and vision, he could be the guy that gets us over the top.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

I need a tall person to change this lightbulb.

  • Dyce

He must show something in workouts and practices. I haven’t heard a coach say he just plain sucks yet.

  • Papa Smurf

Damn, Sam Z doesn’t F around. Know what you’re talking about or go home!!!

  • The Philosopher

Kurt Rambis may be the one to get Darko to play. Darko does have skills. Maybe a fire will get lit under him. He’s not the worst player in the League, I don’t think.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

People have been saying this about Darko for years now. Younger players than Darko, who have had “glimpses” and “flashes” of “potential” have actually gone out and done something with it. One day I want to hear a coach say “You know what? He’s got potential but he’s done sh*t all with it.”

  • therighttoremainsalient

Darko passes the ball to the PG who ISN’T EVEN LOOKING AT HIM and Kurt spins that off as court vision????

  • Exile

Darko isn’t near one of the worst players in the NBA. The problem is he has never come to the “potential” that everyone speaks of. Time to give him a role player mentality and he will have a long career… just not as a team’s focus… or even as a signifigant part of their plan (which is not bad…just shows he is not elite).

  • A l a n

Darko is still in the L??? Why???

  • nastierthanu

    Rec league center. That’s hysterical

  • Silverselectjd

Darko has gotta be better than Kwame, right??!!

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

Next year…All star Weekend. Replace the lame ass dunk contest with the “NBA Draft Bust Tournament.” One on one, games to 11. Darko, Thabeet, Kwame, and one wild card voted in by the fans will participate. The winner gets redemption. The losers are sent to the Kazahkstan League. Permenantly. Get it done, stern.

Anyone see Darko’s touch pass today against the Rockets?
That was pretty classy. The Wolves got their @sses beat, but it was still a nice pass.

  • http://www.gmail.com rushmelo

Darko going to Detroit gave Him a ring early but it did not help that his a$$ bore the bench splinters
he always was supposed to have amazing potential. He’s been better than Kwame Brown.
HE WILL BE A SUCCESS.hope he does well here but seriously speaking minnesota is not the place unless they trade on of their bigs(love,AL).
    he’s damn young too
    not too late
    GO Milicic’

  • Billy Sundayd

Ballin’ ’til I get a milli (Milicic), Darko

  • Shem

You guys may not realize but Detroit was a GOOD team when they got that pick. They didn’t need it. He averaged less then 5 mins his first season, then less then 7 mins his second season. That’s a fact check that. Anyways, coming in with high expectations like that and getting the garbage time for TWO years, then bouncing around like he did.. Not too many players have confidence and can play too good after that. He only got a chance in Orlando on his first and second stint with them and didn’t play half bad. He won’t be as good of a big as Bosh, but theres a reason why scouts saw enough in him to pick him second overall

  • mica

Darko has potential, but he didn’t get the chance to develop it,because he stopped playing actively at the age of 18,I mean- just a few minutes almost every game for 6 years, years that he should’ve spent playing tough matches, great games.I watched him in Japan(world championship) and he was really great-he played a good as Scola,if not better. So I think that he’ll be good if someone let him play enough minutes for 1 or 2 seasones

  • Sparty’s Law

Additionally, he went on to say that Sam Bowie was underrated and choosing Oden over KD was a good move.

  • Ash

The Pistons really f*cked Darko over by not giving him enough minutes. I know that they were a pretty good team when they drafted him, but he should have been at least a 6th or 7th man there – he might have developed better. Although I don’t think he could have become an All-Star or lived up to being picked 2nd in one of the all-time great lottery drafts, he might have become a solid big man on a good team.

I remember playing NBA Inside Drive on Xbox when it first came out – he and LeBron (along with Melo) had equal ratings and I managed to trade him for LeBron (and a first round pick) when playing as the Pistons.

  • IE

Kurt Rambis is a garbage coach, he would think darko has potential. He’s taking minutes away from two big men with actual potential, love and jeff.
