Mikhail Prokhorov Vows to Turn Nets from Worst to Best

Prokhorov tells “60 Minutes” of his ambitious goal, and hilariously quotes Frank Sinatra: “Prokhorov, perhaps Russia’s richest man, discusses the Nets, his vast wealth and the surprisingly unusual way he made most of his money in his first American television interview to be broadcast this Sunday, March 28, at 7 p.m. ET/PT. ‘I am real excited to take the worst team of the league and turn it to be the best,’ says Prokhorov. Asked by Kroft if he really thinks he can pull it off, the 6-foot-8-inch billionaire responds, ‘I am confident. Do you remember in the Frank Sinatra song, ‘New York, New York?’ If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere,’ he tells Kroft with a laugh.”

    The best what?

  • http://rickyrude@hotmail.com RickeRude

Well he certainly has all the financial resources to attract all the big stars and do it…

  • JoeMaMa

Brad….have you ever seen “stomp the yard”? Yeah…that kind of best.

He vows to fill every paper bag with vodka.

if the nets get wall and bosh or wade they will get the new record for best turn around season i think =)

  • Logues

well, getting a top 3 pick the next five yrs should help

  • Monday Night Live

Its possible they have some pieces and cap space……….

  • barnabusb

Lopez can play. He’s definitely a nice building block for the future.

  • NJ4Life

The richest owner in the league. Brand new arenas in Newark and Brooklyn. A top 10 pg and a top 5 center. Good young pieces (lee, twill, cdr). The most first round picks of any team the next 3 years. Picking somewhere 1-4 in this years draft in addition to TWO other first round picks. The second most cap space in the league. If you’re sleeping on the Nets now, you’re in for a rude awakening.

only gil is missing now :D

I actually don’t get why they don’t win more. Their team is really pretty solid on paper. Is their defense that bad?

JL, a variety of things. As a Nets who has won a lot of games, who has read a lot of articles written by beat writers, etc. it’s a combination of many factors. But if I would name all of them, it might be a 500 word piece, don’t think that’s a good thing.

Cuban did it. Why not? Better a proud, young ambitious owner (foreign or not) than an old cheapskate/jackass or a bunch of liars.

  • mike

maybe “the worst to….not so bad” . unless he gives Lebron a billion dollars under the table , being the best is very very far

  • Johnson

devin harris needs to get the axe if they win the lottery this summer. He just does not seem like a future great pg, and they could really use a quality 4 like bosh. Idk how you slice it yi is not a quality starter at the 4 in this league, but as a sixth man playin 20 off the bench at the 3 and 4 creating mismatches and pulling bigs out of the paint would be a great weapon. Wall, Lee, williams, bosh, lopez on the starting 5. Jianlan and CDR off the bench plus maybe moving around some of their awful bench and signing a better backup C this team could be a major threat in the east next year.

he did exactly what he says with CSKA in Europe…at the same time he cannot use the same technique in the NBA (outspend everybody and have a team of 10 all-star level players).

    CSKA’s team from 2005 to 2009:
    DUNCAN (Lorbek)
    ODOM (Smodic)
    PIERCE (Siskauskas)
    ALLEN (Langdon)
KIDD (papaloukas). And he had PAUL(j.r.holden) on the bench…..Bottom line: dear Mikhail meet the salary cap!!!!

Johnson, don’t think Bosh would be a great idea next to Lopez. That would make the frontcourt a bit crowded.

there team really isnt that bad. they just got off to a unlucky start with injuries and a few things just didnt go their way. by the time everyone healthy they dont no any better than to lose. even if they keep same team next year they will win at least 3 times as many games next season.

  • Lazarus

@papaloukas. had dave anderson as well.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU PAPALOUKAS (click on my name)

@Lazarus…..:i think that they didn’t have Andersen together with Lorbek…At the same time Andersen>>>Lorbek.

  • Orlando Woolridge

People are saying they’re not that bad? I think some of you are over-rating some of the talent on that team. I like Lopez, but if the rest of them were really that good, they would have a lot more than 9 wins at this point. They might win 3 times as many games next year as Lazarus said, but if you do the math, that’s still pretty terrible isn’t it?

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out to Tate George.

  • Lebran

    @PAPLOUKAS.
Were you playing for CSKA when he was there?

  • Jeff Henderson

I watched the interview on 60 minutes this guy is a baller. He was doing flips on Jet Ski’s and at clubs with 8 russian models. He made one thing abundantly clear he isn’t buying the nets to be complacent. He is going to put money into the organization. Plus he is moving them to Brooklyn with the largest Russian population in the USA. In a few years they’ll will be a good team.

  • hillbilly

That “60 Minutes” interview was great. Dude sounds so much like Borat. I kept waiting for him to say something like:
“Billionaire playboy? No…understand please, I am merely looking for woman with vah-zheen like ah-noos of young boy & how you say…’plow’ experience? High fiiiiive!”.

how about just not the worst? or playoff contention?
