Post Up: Nets Get to 10

And Dirk gets a trip-dub and the W.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Nets win! Nets win! Nets win!

They got to 10. Bet they are thanking the basketball Gods from saving them from being on the bad side of history. Not only did the Nets get to 10 victories on the season, they got into double-digits by taking down the Spurs, 90-84. A 15-4 run in the fourth gave New Jersey control and without Manu Ginobili (back spasms) to give them a scoring boost, the Spurs were unable to come back and lost on the day after they defeated the Celtics in Boston. Brook Lopez had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Nets in the win, while Courtney Lee scored 19 and Devin Harris had 17 points and nine assists. George Hill scored 19 points for San Antonio in the loss.

Well, the Raptors live another day after hanging on to defeat the Charlotte Bobcats, 103-101. I’ve got a feeling all of their games from here on out are going to go down to the wire while they fight for their playoff lives. Big three from Hedo Turkoglu down the stretch after being benched for disciplinary reasons against the Heat. Big turnover when he stepped on the sidelines, too. I cringed because the frustration was written all over his face. Even if you’ve gotten yourself into a mess, if you’re busting your ass to make it better, I’ll root for you to sort things out.

Now, if you were watching the game, what the hell was that no-call on Gerald Wallace when he almost took off DeRozan’s head on the dunk? Crazy. Also, very weird seeing Michael Jordan sitting courtside, heckling the refs. How is this going to work? It’s got to be so, so distracting to hear MJ ripping the refs while you’re at the free throw line playing against his team.

In New Orleans, the Lakers stumbled and fell, 108-101. Chris Paul scored 15 points and dished 13 assists, Marcus Thornton scored 18 and Darren Collison added 17 off of the bench as the Lakers hit just seven of 29 3-pointers. They wasted a 26-point, 22-rebound night from Pau Gasol and 31 points from Kobe Bryant in the loss that had the Lakers trailing by as many as 17 in the fourth before they made up some ground in garbage time.

In Dallas the Mavs took down the Nuggets, 109-93 and Dirk Nowitzki had his second career triple-double. 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists ensured the Mavericks held onto the number two spot in the western conference for at least another day as the Nuggets have lost five of their last six. While Shawn Marion scored 21 points, his most important contribution to the game was his defense on Melo as he hounded him into 3-for-16 shooting for a season-low 10 points. JR Smith had 27 points off of the bench for Denver while Roddy Beaubois played just under 15 minutes and scored just five points after his 40-point explosion on Saturday night.

In Utah, the Jazz scored 44 in the first quarter and then struggled to keep the Knicks at bay, allowing them to come back in the third before shutting them down in the fourth when New York scored just 11 points. Utah got the 103-98 victory and also took over 1st place in the Northwest Division after the Nuggets lost to Dallas. Al Harrington had 26 points and 17 rebounds off of the bench for New York while David Lee scored 16. Carlos Boozer scored 26 points to go with 14 rebounds to lead the Jazz as Deron Williams added 23 points and 14 assists and Paul Millsap added 14 points and 10 rebounds off of the bench as Utah shot 57 percent from downtown in the win.

The Bulls face the Suns tonight and I’ll be watching, actively rooting against them. It’s weird to be pulling for the Raps so much. I just want to cover a playoff series, dammit! Sorry in advance to our Bulls readers. I guess we’re opponents for the next few weeks.

David Lee had 17 points and 9 assists? In a Nets game? No wonder they won!

  • Ken

    Courtney. : P
But yeah, props to the Nets. I think I’d rather have Brook than D Lee anyway… call me crazy.

  • Kulchakris

Let me preface this by saying, I am a huge Lakers/Kobe fan. That said, I think it’s time we accept that the Lakers are not good enough to win the title this year. The team’s defensive effort is inconsistent game to game, and it’s apparent (at least to me) that Kobe is not the player he once was. I know the playoffs differ from the regular season, but the focus and drive necessary to win aren’t like a light switch. Plus, if they meet the Cavs in the finals, they won’t have home court advantage, and LeBaby will eat Ron-Ron alive. Sad, but true.

I agree with kulchakris lakers arent hungry and they dont wanna meet cleveland by no means

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

You guys are nuts, the Lakers drive for 73 wins isjustaround the corner!!!!!!! They will also run through the first three rounds at a 12-0 clip. Stop your madness!

I’m not sure what in the hell is going on with my post up paragraphs. I usually write in Word first, then copy and paste into WordPress. The past week I’ve just been doing WP and twice now two graphs have ran together. Booo to that. Sorry, guys.

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Anddd, as Laumol said in his comment, David Lee = Devin Harris in my world last night. Not sure where my head was. Eeek.

  • Kulchakris

Eboy’s sarcasm knows no bounds. Honestly, they can make it to the WC finals with the half-assed defensive effort they’ve shown the past couple weeks. Denver and Dallas are equally as inconsistent in their performances, and neither team has the talent to match up. As for the NBA ‘chip finals, I am not even sure they could beat Orlando at this point. I am full-fledged LeBaby hater, but I have to admit that he is easily the best player in the league right now, and the Cavs will be tough to beat.

Looks like it’s up to me to save the post up again.
    - Can the playoffs just start already? All the top teams are mailing it in already.
    - Pau “BRB Need Hand Lotion” Gasol on why the Lakers lost: “We need to use all our weapons.” Angry Losing Mamba on why the Lakers lost: “I should have shot the damn ball more!”
    - Should there be an asterisk when players have high-scoring nights against the Warriors and Lakers guards?
    - Uglier shot form: Anderson Varejao or Matt Bonner? Bonner looks like he’s throwing a baby at a carnival game while Varejao’s looks like a gooseneck beaten with a hammer.
    - Rookies are so carefree. Darren Collison was smiling like a kid robbing a candy store each time he scored.
    - The Dirkster is the MVP of the hair league. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t want to feel that epic lion mane.
    - Mo Williams is not taking his demotion to 3rd option (actually 4th when Shaq’s in the game) well. He’s overrated and inconsistent which can only lead to one possible scenario – he’s dating Lamar Odom.
    - I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the Nuggets are this year’s Arizona Cardinals. They had their chance and they blew it. Even if they do advance, Artest is gonna make Melo work on offense…or thow a shoe at him. Either one. You only get 1 chance to make a 1st impression…and a proper out of bounds play (lol @ Anthony Carter in-bounding the ball).
    - Only a few more stops left on the Bosh Raptors Retirement Farewell tour. Unless he re-signs, which would be a bigger mistake than Cher’s return from retirement.
    - Danny Granger thinks LeBron should go to NY. In other un-related news, LeBron did Granger’s girl. Hard.
    - Grant Hill is starting to creep me out. Does he ever blink? Though if I had a wifey like his, I’d be quite wide-eyed too.
    - Does Jerry Sloan deserve a fine for that mini-shove against the ref? At least he didn’t laugh at him like Tim Duncan against Joey Crawford, that’s an automatic ejection.
    - On a related note, Mike Breen is obviously a lobbyist for the Refs Association. We get it, you like your job and to keep it have to suck off the Refs on every decision. On the plus side, it can’t be that hard to manipulate him. “Hey Mike, Imma borrow your car for the weekend. Refs said it’s okay.” Mike: “Well gosh, they’re the best in the business so I guess so.”
    - Slamadaday: DeJuan Blair on haters. Each time he dunks, scouts are forced to justify sleeping on him: “For the last time, he has no ACL’s!”
    - Now that Z is back, Danny Ferry has been arrested on kidnapping charges. Police say he stole Antawn Jamison from the Wizards. Ferry’s official statement regardint the allegations: “I gave them a draft pick!”
    - The New Jersey Nyets reached double figure wins! Funny, cause I don’t recall reading anything about hell freezing over.
    - Anyone see that feature on the Nets new shady Russian owner on 60 Minutes? Dude has a net worth of $10 billion, works out for 2 hours a day, keeps 7 models with him when he travels so he doesn’t get bored, has a 200 ft. $45 million yacht, and a massive gun collection. Also, just to mindf*ck you further, he’s never tried vodka, doesn’t own a cell phone, and never used the internet. I also heard that one time he had dinner with Donald Trump…and ate his wife for dessert. He is…
the most interesting man in the world. Stay thirsty, my Nets.
    - So Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian are over. You know the saying – if you let them go and they back that ass up, they’re yours.
    - 24 is officially cancelled. Over/under on a Keither alcoholic binge?
    - An idea for SLAM’s next mag: a blank cover. That way, we can all fill in whoever we want on it. Hey, it worked for Time magazine.
Still waiting for my inivitation to do a SLAM blog.
I’m out like Hedo’s work ethic.

@Kulchakris Kobe is as good as ever. The problem is the rest of the Lakers, they are not motivated enough. The majority of them are happy with the one championship they already have. Kobe on the other hand wants to keep winning so he can get at MJ’s level. Watch the games carefully, Kobe puts everything he’s got every game, the rest of the team isn’t responding, they are not executing, even Phil said so yesterday, Kobe keeps putting the ball in their hands when he’s double or triple teamed and those lazy muthas keep missing and missing. Gasol is a great player and all, his stats are nice, but he gets but he is outmanned every night even by guys 4 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter. I agree with you when you doubt the Lakers will win this year, but is not because of Kobe.

  • A.

Give Anton a prize. Now. That was amazing.

  • LA Huey

Not an Laker fan but I’ll still take the Lakers to win the West. Cleveland isn’t lock for the chip either. That team may run deep, so deep, but so deep (their potential rotation issues) make it hard to sleep.

  • T-Money

Mike Brown has been in playoffs mode for the last 2-3 games as far as the rotation goes. He found something with Jamison at the 3 when Bron is resting (and even sometimes with James on the floor playing the 2). The 8-man rotation is Mo, AP, Bron, Twan, Shaq with Andy, Delonte and Z coming off the bench. Boobie, JJ, Jamario, Jawad, Leon… we thank you for your help but it’s time to sit you a–es down.

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

Why have the Lakers fallen out of contention for a championship? Every single team in the west has been playing like crap recently, NOT just he Lakers. Does anyone think Dallas or Phoenix can knock off the Lakers? I don’t.
Beating Cleveland or Orlando is another story, but I’d still give the over/under to the Fakeshow.

  • PistonsFan

He didn’t last night, Rob. I was in the Arena for the Lakers/Hornets game, and Kobe did absolutely zero for about the first 24 minutes. The only players doing anything consistently were Gasol and Artest.

  • Kulchakris

@Rob, I am not questioning Kobe’s effort, I am questioning his current level of skill. Father time is undefeated, and it appears to be doing a number on the Bean. I may be wrong though. Time, and the playoffs will tell. Your comments on the other members of the team are spot on though.

  • Th3_R3al_Chris

Shawn Michaels has been without an ACL in his left leg since the 90′s and he went on to be the greatest professional wrestler of all time. Maybe the scouts should have consulted with him before using that as proper judgment.

  • Rob

@PistonsFan yeah and then he finished with 31 shooting 10 from 18. he finished with 6 assists, and believe me those 6 could have been 9 or 10 if the rest had executed better.

@Kulchakris I can understand that, although it probably has to do more with his injuries than with his skill level.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

@kulchakris, shut up, dude, you are not a lakers fan, because Gasol and Bynum are the ones bringing the team down, not rebounding and playing good defense when guards drive down the lane. Offense doesn’t matter, its the defense that matters. If you are a real fan and watch years before this year, you will notice last year he did the same thing, in the way he played. LAKERS WILL WIN IT ALL, MARK MY WORDS. PEOPLE FORGET IF KOBE DIDN’T HIT THOSE 7 GAME WINNERS THE LAKERS WOULD BE A 3RD OR 4TH SEED. KOBE WILL WIN THE REAL MVP AGAIN LIKE LAST YEAR!!

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

co sign TyMo and J-Ro…@ Jackie Moon: why the hate on Ton?? is it cause hes a Kobe hater?

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

@Sportin-Lisbon-Blazers No, it’s because every … single … post even slightly related to has some kind of slight about Kobe and his personality … it’s tired…get over it … something about Colorado or white girls … Kobe won his title, and he didn’t even stop to ask Shaq how his @ss taste … even Ryan Jones doesn’t go as far down as Anton in the depths of his Kobe obsession …

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Jukai: Right. The only Western team that really looks in very good form right now are the Jazz. But sadly, the Lakers have creamed them in recent years’ playoff meetings. Unless the Lakers pick up momentum now until the Finals though, they’re in for a hell of a fight against Orlando or the Cavs.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

I’d read a daily Anton Notes column… but only if its most consistent than the Slam podcast and Amares blog. Combined!

  • http://psp2423@yahoo.com 323 478 1884

im a laker fan but i doubt that the lakers will win the championship this year.Kobe,Gasol,Odem, and Bynum play great but the other team hasnt step it up lately. The lakers bench needs to step it up and Artest needs to get more cosistent in the 3 point line. Orlando and Clevland both have good and reliable benches and when the starters are resting can mak shots something the Laker bench hasnt been able to do.5 guys cant win a chaimponship. Next year trade sasha, morrison, mbenga and 2 round picks for more reliable bench players!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Since the Rockets aren’t making the playoffs, I’m rooting for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West right now. I was going to say Jazz, but the Thunder are my favorite underdogs.
But, if they don’t play each other in the first round: Let’s go Thunder AND Jazz!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

For the East, since the Knicks obviously aren’t anywhere near making the playoffs, and the Raptors are an eighth seed, I’m rooting for Atlanta.
    LET’S GO RAPTORS! And Hawks!

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

Phoenix and Cleveland for me. Let’s hope Phoenix carries this winning streak into the playoffs!

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Let the games begin! I haven’t even been following March Madness… I mean, I’m going to watch the Final game, but… NBA, despite it’s bullsh!t commercialism and rigged referees, is something I’m just too used to.
