Post Up: Rookie/MVP Race

Have they both been decided already?

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Want to know when you really know a rookie has the ROY race on lock?

When they come one assist shy of the triple-double and we’re disappointed he didn’t get it, but barely raise an eyebrow at the line he did put up.

That’s special. He’s special. I did not see him being this good, this fast. I was far too focused on his less-than-perfect shooting mechanics. My bad. Apologies go out to Mr. Evans who has been one of the most exciting rookies in recent history to watch. I just hope you’re watching, too.

It’s weird though. Watching Kobe Bryant have rookies keep the pace with him two nights in a row, with Steph on Monday and now Tyreke on Tuesday. Makes me feel kind of old and makes me thankful I get to watch this generation of rookies and appreciate them from day one in a way I probably didn’t with Kobe. I followed the ’96 class and consider them “my” first real class that I loved, but I was 11. You don’t appreciate, you don’t understand the skill, effort, heart, talent in the same way. It’s more fun now.

It’s still strange hearing MVP chants for Kobe in Arco. I don’t like that. I miss the old Kings/Lakers rivalry days. I’m just in a bit of a sentimental mood today, aren’t I? I think it’s because I’m tired and am already thinking of dreamland.

Also, I’m tracking Bulls, Bobcats and the Heat to try and see where this team of mine here in Toronto is going to finish up. I just want to know if I’m going to get to cover playoffs and see my first postseason game. Pulling hard for that, so I’m pulling for the Raps to finish strong. They’re really not doing themselves any favors, unfortunately. The Hawks are in town tonight on the second night of a back-to-back, but of course, they played the Nets last night and got a whole bunch of rest.

I missed the Detroit/Cleveland game because I was liveblogging Heat/Spurs, but the world was talking about LeBron’s big block at the end. Goaltending? It certainly sounds so. Another game, another triple-double for Bron. Someone said Durant should get the MVP because Bron is, “being LeBron.”

I think this kind of works against his argument because it’s sort of saying that LeBron’s in a different category because he’s so good. Doesn’t this mean he’s the best player in the league? Yeah, I’m still not good at saying statements like this, but I think so, right? I’m just happy I get to watch him. And Kobe. And Melo. And KD. And the rest of them.

In Miami, the Spurs were all over the Heat through the first three quarters and then kind of fell apart before Manu Ginobili bailed them out with two huge 3-pointers to hold off a Heat team that trailed by as many as 26 points in the first half. Manu’s so good when he’s on, isn’t he? Love watching him drive the lane  and e-x-t-e-n-d to the hoop, drawing the foul more often than not. I also love George Hill and DeJaun Blair. The Spurs as a whole are a lot more enjoyable to watch than they get credit for. It was amazing to see the difference between Miami in the first and second half. Tale of two halves didn’t even begin to describe it.

As long as the Raps go to the postseason, I’m happy. I’m not ready for my day-to-day season to end at the end of the regular season.

So we all agree Tyreke is ROY, can we agree that Jamal Crawford is the 6th man? What other awards do we have locked up already? I think Brooks gets COTY. What else? Bron MVP? I feel like Kobe is going to go off and have five more game winners and a ton of phenomenal performances to close the season out just because I wrote that. I’d take it. Have your picks changed at all since we last spoke about this?

    I’d say both races are locked up at this point.

  • jumpman3224

    I’m not saying that everyone of LBJ’s chase down blocks is a goaltend or even a majority or anything like that. And, I’m not saying he’s never been called for one (I’ve seen at least 2 this season). But, certainly some are blatant goaltends (ie last night with Cavs up 3 late) and some arethat are questionable because the height of the ball as related to its apex. But, referees need to really focus on these plays and make sure they get the right call. I’d hate for a non-call goaltend after a layup hits the glass to swing a playoff series. All that being said, players need to man-up (ie Melo) and dunk in those situations or at least throw a wicked pump fake and try to draw a foul.

  • http://www.Twitter/notebooknick NotebookNick

    I’d say you’re right with the award locks. I’m interested to hear what people think about KD suddenly being included in the same breath as LeBron, Kobe, Wade and Melo. I’m definitely a fan, so it’s interesting to see what Wade/Melo fans feel about KD being “ahead” of them in the MVP race.

  • jumpman3224

    *not saying Melo needs to man up, I’m saying that he did during that crazy Den/Cle game where he looked back found LeBron and slammed it home.

  • letsmotor

    if lebron’s chasing you down, why not just do this?

  • Th3_R3al_Chris

    How is Brandon Jennings not ROY when his team is the only one in playoff contention, and fighting fighting for position just shy of homecourt right now?

  • http://myspace.com/heislegend Bryan

    The MVP was decided before the season even started just like every year. To be fair though Lebron has done nothing to lose votes along the way but my point remains the same.

  • jumpman3224

    @Real Chris: I would love to see Jennings as ROY and that is a great argument for it. But, it kind of reminds me of 2007-2008 when Durant had superior numbers and Horford helped the Hawks make the playoffs. Winning hasn’t mattered as much when it comes to ROY. Hopefully being at or near the top of rookie ppg and apg as well as leading a playoff team will land Jennings on All Rookie-Team.

  • cramzy

    I like bjennings but its hard to front on Tyreke Evans when he’s putting up 20-5-5. Especially when bj is shooting like 35% from the field. But again, the Bucks are 5 games out of home court in the playoffs. Do they do that without BJ?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

    If there’s any criteria other than performance for ROY, it definitely isn’t team success. The whole point of the draft/ parity system of the NBA is that the elite rookies will be on the worst teams. Obviously.
    Evans is a lock because, while he has taken only 33 more shots that Jennings in total this year, he is averaging five points a game more.

  • therighttoremainsalient

    ROY – Brandon Jennings… when winning as a rookie means something, get back to me with your apologies.
    COY – Scott Brooks; when you get a team that young playing this good. THAT means something.
    DPOY – LeBron. That blocking the fast break technique is on par with a go to move..
    MVP – LeBron. Sure, where “LeBron being LeBron” should not be a crime.

  • Tom

    Lebron definitely is MVP, it’ll probably be unanimous. Steph Curry might give Evans a run for his money for ROY, he’s had an incredible 2nd half to his season. But Evans has been doing it all year, which is something. I’d say COY is gonna be the hardest one to figure out this year. The Hawks finally put it all together this year so I think Woody deserves some credit, then Skiles being patient with Jennings and leading the Bucks to 5th seed. Also Nate for dealing with all those injuries and still keeping them in the playoffs. As for Brooks, i’m not sold on him yet. I think the success in OKC is more due to Sam Presti being a awesome exec than Brooks being a awesome coach.

  • Logues

    as much as i want curry to win ROY evans will win, and he prolly deserves it. and bron is def mvp

  • http://Slamonline.com Mvp23100

    That boy got a chip on his shoulder after that handshake situation in the ecf the nike tape flack for the shirts and kobe talking slick at camp he’s at the leagues neck mvp been locked I’d be afraid for the next 10 yrs

  • Logues

    ^ i hope your joking about bron being DPOY. those blocks are nice, but is he really that great of a one on one defensive player?

  • http://Slamonline.com Mvp23100

    And with the rooks i didnt know curry and evans were that efficient gotta go with evans hes been most consistent 20 5 5 means he has a bright future in 3 4 years we wont know who jennings is

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

    It’s funny to me that Lamar Odom gets absolutely no press for 6th Man. Have people forgotten that he comes off the Lakers’ bench? And you can’t count out Jason Terry. He won it last year. But the winds of the league and media are blowing in Crawford’s direction.

  • T-Money

    Actually, a lot of people where VERY high on Melo when he started hot and felt like he was ”due”. Kobe was also scoring 40 basicaly every night whilst unleashing the post game. Both slowed down. / The Bucks are winning because Bogut has been essentially the 2nd best center in the league this year. 4 players have posted 20-5-5 in their rookie year: MJ, Big O, Bron.. and Reke. Nuff said.

  • peter

    Holly, that was always the argument with Shaq back in the day with regards to MVPs and probably the reason he only won one…you’re right about it working against them, because people just expect them to dominate…that being said, I think LeBron is a lock for this season, and I think he’s converted some people, because a lot of people were talking about Kobe as a lock for this year before the season.

  • underdog

    My MVP is Durant. Period.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    MVP = Lebron
    DPOY = I want to say Josh Smith, but the people are going to say Dwight.
    ROY = Evans (even though I want Curry to win.. or Co-win)
    6th = Jamal Crawford (it was always Crawford, Landry was the biggest threat, but now he’s a starter..)
    MIP = This is the one that MOST up for grabs… It could go anywhere from Danilo to Aaron Brooks to even Kevin Durant.

  • http://Slamonline.com Mvp23100

    Underdog your name says why i cant be mad at that

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Lol @ Detroit for chanting “MVP”. The Palance of Auburn Hills has now been re-named “The LeBron Game 5 Memorial.”

    Mike Bibby claims sexual harassment against Josh Smith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab9aoQkMVls&feature=player_embedded

  • jumpman3224

    @MVP – players who lead their rookie class in assists (ie Paul, Rose, Durant, Roy) tend to go on to become all-stars or at least relevant players so I doubt we wont know who Jennings is.

  • T-Money

    Josh Smith for DPOY? Hahaha. Yeah, he gets the weakside blocks but I don’t think 4s are saying ‘damn, how am I gonna get mine tonight?’ when they face the Hawks.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Seriously though, 95 percent of Bron’s blocks are goaltends.
    We will have to live with this for another 10 years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Same thing with Melo and Bron, Melo should of had ROY. But Bron is Bron. Evans is going to get it but Jennigs has his team in the playoffs.
    MVP = Durant
    DPOY = Rondo/Dwight
    ROY – Jennings
    6th = Crawford
    MIP = George Hill
    COY = Scott Brooks

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

    Will Slam gloat just a little if/when two of its former Diary writers win MVP and ROY? Yes, Slam will.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    When LeBron did the diary entries, did he write them in 3rd person?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

    You’ll just have to check the archives, Anton.

  • jumpman3224

    @James – Melo’s ROY snub was kind of epic. My friends who are nuggets fans still hold a huge grudge over that. Should’ve at least been Co-ROY. He got more points with a better percentage and grabbed more boards on a playoff team (in a better conference) that was horrible a year ealier.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

    Anton: He actually wrote them in the 5th person. Every line started with ‘I heard from this guy who told somebody…’

  • J-RO

    MVP= LeBron
    DPOY= Dwight
    ROY= Evans/Jennings
    6th man= Crawford
    MIP= Westbrook
    COY= S. Brooks

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Jumpman, I know lol. I remember I had my deck top background as on old one from the SLAM website. It was Lebron, in a locker room, with a fro and kind of chubby. It had a green tint to it. Had it as my background forever? Forever ever? Forever ever!! And when that happens I finally took it down lol. Melo 100 percent should of had it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Not deck, DESK***

  • Th3_R3al_Chris

    I’m sticking with Jennings for ROY. Jennings/Bogut, with John Salmons replacing Michael Redd? Not only were the Bucks predicted bottom-dwellers prior to this season, but had the “experts” known Michael Redd would miss another season and be replaced at the trade-deadline with John Salmons, they may have predicted something as bad as the Nets record. I also like Kevin Durant for MVP if the Thunder can steal the 4 spot in the West.

  • Rob

    Numbers don’t lie. Robertson, Jordan, Lebron and Tyreke. He’s ROY no doubt.

  • Rob

    Jennings doesn’t have the Bucks in the playoffs. Bogut and Salmons do.

  • James

    Come on people, Bron is dropping 30 a night, 8 assist, 7 rebounds, a block and a steal, and his team’s got the best record in the NBA, he’s the MVP. Tyreke is just ridiculous, 20,5,5, definitely ROY and Scott Brooks should get COY, I mean the Thunder are a half game behind the Jazz for 4th seed in the west with basicly a college team (if we’re talking about age).
    6th Man: Jamal Crawford
    MIP: Kevin Durant (from:’he’s GOING to be amazing’ to second on almost everyone’s MVP list) that’s called improvement.
    DPOY: Dwight Howard, no doubt about it.

  • Joey E.

    BJ vs Tyreke is almost like LeBron vs. Melo for ROY. almost. Melo/Bron was closer. But LeBron put up 21/5/5 on a horrible team. Melo put up 21/6/2 on a playoff team in the west and guess who got ROY?

  • Joey E.

    but for the record im not hating on LeBron and do believe Tyreke is ROY without a doubt.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Whoa, I just got a hold of an early Bron diary entry in 03:
    “Today is March 22nd, 2003 BLA (Before LeBron Era). I just had a history test but didn’t study, so I just wrote ‘I’m LeBron’ for every question. We got some important games comin up but coach said I gotta work on my passing – lol just kidding. Went up to New York for a vacation this weekend, apparently lots of people want me there in 2010. Also had lunch with Melo and stole his cookies while he wasn’t looking. Kinda like Imma steal the ROY from him next season…sh!t, that wasn’t supposed to come out yet. Anyway I gotta go interview some potential coaches for me when I get drafted, this one dude is a frontrunner – he just stands there with his mouth open and lets me do whatever. My kinda coach! Aight, that’s all the time I got, Nike’s texting me to stop wearing adidas headbands lmao.
    King out.”

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

    james: you’re an idiot if you think melo deserved the roy over bron. Stupidity!

  • jumpman3224

    @CB 34: Why wouldn’t he have? More points, rebounds, better percentage and he lifted Denver to the playoffs in a tougher conference?

  • Joey E.

    “he just stands there with his mouth open and lets me do whatever. “——-ANTON! that was nice

  • LA Huey

    Jumpman, agree with the Melo snub. Should have been co-ROY.

  • LA Huey

    MVP: LBJ
    ROY: Reke
    6th: Landry (still qualifies w/ mininum games needed)
    DPY: Dwight
    COY: Scott Brooks
    MIP: Durant (someone who wasn’t an All-Star last year is now a legit top 5 player?)

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

    That would’ve been very nice, Anton, if only LeBron hadn’t written his diary in ’01-02.

  • Mvpitzki

    MVP: Dirk
    COY: Carlisle
    DPOY: Kidd
    6th MOY: Terry
    ROY: ROODY “FRENCH CUFFS” BEAUBOIS
    MIP: Durant (Not on my team but ke’s a beast)

  • underdog

    What kind of ROY debate are we talking about? Just check Evans’ stats, and don’t check his team’s stats. That’s all. Anyway, the Bucks are rolling just because the Bulls let Salmons walk. Now, seriously, it’s a tough one, and while I think Jennings and Curry both have a bright future in the L, you can’t ignore Evans’ dominance, versatility and consistency. Pretty good rookie class, no doubt.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    Anton came up with another funny.
    also, strictly on rookie year, melo played on par if not better than lebron that season.

  • http://missjia.com meloMan2.0

    did James just say something positive about Melo?? the sky must be falling

  • Farman

    The MVP award will easily be given to Queen James. Even though Kobe is still the best player in the game. But, Kobe has better players surrounding him then Lebron does. Now that the Cavs traded for Jamieson, and will get Big Z back in a few days, the Cavs are sent to make a run for the title. Should be an easy path to the finals. Cleveland has 3 legit scorers on the team. There is no team in the east that can hang with them. I still won’t let Boston fall that easily. If Garnett’s health doesn’t get any better, it’s gonna be really hard for them to pass the Queen and the Cavaliers. As for the Lakers, Denver is gonna be the hardest team for them to beat. I know Dallas added some great players and made their team very deep. But they don’t cause the problems for the Lakers like the Nuggets do. They have no answer for Billups, and Melo is the one of the hardest covers for Ron Ron. We will see. But it looks like David Stern will finally get his wish. The NBA will be making real $$$ will Kobe and Lebron go to war this coming June………..

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Melo is my 3rd/4th favourite player man. His jersey is up in my closet. Bought it in his rookie season.
    CB 34 – STFU you Bron loving c( )nt f( )ck.
    Farman – Kobe is not the best in the NBA anymore. At the start of the season… maybe. Now … nope.

  • Farman

    James the Balla, explain to me why Kobe is not the best player anymore. You’re telling me that in crunch time, you would rather have the Queen than Kobe? Not only does Kobe hit game winning shots over and over again. He also shoots over 85 percent from the free throw line. Miss James has only 2 game winners in his career. Kobe has had 2 in one week this year. And also, you CANNOT count on him making foul shots. James may be a beast, but Kobe is a killer. True Story.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

    james: Go sit and spin somewhere you kobe loving a$$ licker.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Farman – I love Kobe no doubt. But Lebron is in his prime. Kobe is still there. But … anyways… not even getting into it.

    CB 34 – If you think… sorry, let me re-phrase that. If you tried to think, you would know that Melo lost that ROY trophy, because Bron is the NBA’s golden child. Melo had a better season. That’s it… and losing that ROY, f( )cked him up a bit I think.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

    james: the way i look at it, that ROY could have gone either way but Bron just barely beat Melo. Just a matter of preference i guess. Melo winning would have been justified.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    @ Mvpitzki lol.
    If you’re going to have a list like that you might as well put Dampier as most improved player. LOL

    A game lasts 48 minutes. Crunch time is around the last minute or 2 of a game. You can have Kobe in the last minute. Give me LeBron for the entire game, that way I know I won’t need Kobe to bail me out on a last second shot cause the game will most probably have been over since the middle of the 4th. Or end of the 3rd. The Cavs don’t let people hang around if they can kill their hopes a lot earlier. Therefore, no need for game winners. There. Game winners and free throws. That’s all Laker fans can now rest their hats on? Oh and ofcourse the Chips Kobe won alone.

  • A.

    It’s funny how people say that Tyreke deserves it because he’s one of 4 players to average the mythical 20-5-5 as a rookie. But yet, they say that Melo deserved it against one of the 4th players who averaged the mythical 20-5-5. I mean, LeBron did something that ONLY TWO PLAYERS BEFORE HIM DID. In the history of EVER. That alone proves he deserved it. And that’s why Tyreke’s going to win. It’s just that simple.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    A, does that stand for Anton?

  • A.

    Not at all. It stands for my real name. Anton is Anton.

  • A.

    Correction, it’s the first letter of my name. If you by any chance you didn’t get that.

  • jumpman3224

    For the record I never said that Tyreke deserved it on the strenght of 20-5-5. But, I do say Melo deserved it over LBJ in spite of his 20-5-5. LBJ’s rookie campaign and subsequent ROY award is not an apple to apples comparison to the big O and MJ. For starters, both of them led all rookies in scoring (both at near 30 ppg), which LBJ didn’t and they didn’t have another rookie with comparable numbers AND better win-loss sucess.

  • jumpman3224

    No disrespect to LBJ intended. What he did as a rookie and ever since has been amazing.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

    now, i love LeBron, and definitely take LeBron over Kobe, if only because of all the Laker-whiners who call him Queen James, etc…
    that being said, Kobe has six game-winners this season. SIX. what if they lose all of those games? they would be not have a comfortable lead in first, in fact, they would be battling for homecourt in the West…
    that does make him pretty f###ing valuable

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Kobe should be mvp? why are people saying LeBron is better than kobe when kobe has 4 rings and and the Queen has NONE.Kobe should have won mvp in ’06 so, then he would have 2 mvp awards. Kobe has more all star mvps, and is just a beast on the court. NOBODY can guard him (since Bruce left), and he can guard ANYBODY that is a guard. Kobe has a constant drive to get better, and we aren’t seeing ANY of that from LeBron. Lets see LEBRON FOCUS ON SOMETHING ELSE BESIDES MONEY, FAME, AND COMMERCIALS, and then he is in my mvp race.

    @Hova: Saying Lebron doesn’t have drive to get better is just silly. You can prefer Kobe over Lebron, but be reasonable. Lebron gets better every single year. He took Asst. Chris Jent on his book/movie tour with him this summer to work on his J every day. Did it pay dividends? He’s having a career best in shooting percentage, free throw percentage, and 3-point percentage. He’s improved his post game some too. If your going to post, lay off insults and stick to facts.
