The Post Up: L.A. Bound

Time to make a Staples dream come true.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Oh, my goodness. It’s just after 2 a.m. and I am about 12 hours away from flying to LA for a week of basketball fun. I’m not sure if I mentioned it here –maybe because I was scared something would end up coming up and the trip wouldn’t end up happening– but I’m heading to LA for the next four days and then to San Fran for three days and I’m pretty pumped.

It’s my first time to either place and I’m finally going to be seeing the Lakers play at STAPLES. While my fandom may have shifted from one franchise to the league, players and good stories since I’ve started writing about the league as a whole, the Lakers will forever be where this dream started for me and watching them play in LA has been something I’ve wanted to do for years.

If all goes as planned, I’ll have a fun little story for you about that Lakers/Raptors game on Tuesday night. Oh, I’m attending as a fan, too. It’ll be just my second NBA game as a fan and not a member of the media. It’s going to be great. After Lakers/ Raptors, I’ll be catching the Warriors/Raptors at Oracle, which should be fun, too.

In fact, my friend and I are contemplating another trip to STAPLES on Wednesday night to watch the Clippers and Bucks. Ha. I know, I know, can’t get away from the game even on vacation. Who would want to, though? I mean, really.

Of course, the Lakers head home having lost three games in a row and will face Toronto on Tuesday. They are going to be fired up and as one Toronto writer joked last night, Kobe may just be looking to drop 82. I doubt that’ll ever happen, but you never can truly say never and it will most certainly be a tough game for the Raptors.

Thoughts on Matt Barnes faking like he was going to throw the ball at Kobe’s face and KB not even flinching? While Barnes was trying to be the intimidator, I thought Kobe was pretty damn badass when he simply continued to stare down Barnes. I wanted that final shot to drop for Kobe. I know he did, too. Even more than normal. Weird to imagine how it feels to miss what would be a game winner on the same court where you were winning championship number four the last time in Orlando.

In the end it was a 96-94 victory for the Magic. Vince Carter scored 25, Dwight had 15 points and 16 rebounds and Jameer Nelson added 15 as well. In addition, each of these players missed a free throw in the final minute of action, giving the Lakers room. While they escaped with the win yesterday, they would know better than giving a team with Kobe Bryant room to breathe.

Kobe finished with 34 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Pau Gasol scored 20 to go with 11 rebounds and Ron Artest showed up with an insane purple and gold haircut that had “defense” etched into his head in various languages. Whatever works.

Got to catch Jrue Holiday up close last night and he was awesome. 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists. 8-12 shooting.

Yeah, this draft class was awfully weak.

Man, wishing I had the new issue of SLAM to read on this flight today. I still think my favorite college cover is the Michael Beasley one from ’08. What about you?

I missed most of the bball action today, but did get home from the Raptors/Sixers game to see Ray Allen win the game for the Celtics as Boston broke the hearts of the Wizards, who had led all game before falling, 86-83. KG was 0-for-7 in the game. It felt nice to see Ray hit a huge three when it really mattered. A 20-4 run to close the game gave Boston the victory and prevented them from falling to the Nets and Wizards in the span of a week.

Everyone catch the shots of Chris Andersen drinking Starbucks on the bench during halftime of the Nuggets 118-106 victory over the Blazers? I couldn’t help but wonder what his drink of choice is.

Loved seeing JR Smith finish with seven assists to go with his 22 points. He’s such a better passer than we get to see. Another 30-point night for Melo and 21 points for Billups and Denver shot 59 percent for the game. Brandon Roy struggled, shooting just 3-for-14 from the floor for his 12 points. Jerryd Bayless scored 24 points to go with five assists and Andre Miller added 19 points in the loss.

Okay, it’s almost 3 a.m. now. It’s time I get myself to bed and dream of sunshine and sweet, sweet basketball. I’ll be checking in, but we’ll be deviating from the norm for a couple of days here as I take my first official vacation… Ever. Yay!

That Lakers game was great. Kobe made so many shots down the line… and the Barnes defense was gerat.

Kobe was pretty BA when Barnes faked the ball to the face. Also, I was watching the game with no volume and thought Barnes got two technicals (a double T when getting in Bryants face at a deadball and a second for doing the same after dunking). Is that correct? If so why no ejection? From the Lakers perspective, they definately can take from the L and try to improve on. To win in the playoffs they are going to have to either get more 3′s to fall or shoot less of them for example. But all in all they are an older team and at no point in the playoffs will they play 3 games in 4 days. Solid win for Orlando, I think they have a real shot at repeating in the East despite what most Cavs fans would think.

“you were winning championship number four the last time in Orlando” Sounded to me as if Holly thinks Kobe isn’t going to win anymore championships but it’s all good!

Sometimes Pau takes too long to get into tough mode. Bynum brought that from the start but was in foul trouble throughout. But, it seems like it takes Pau about 3 quarters of being roughed up to take it personal and play physically.

MVP how is that new respect going for Barnes, ya ball licker!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Odd that all people have to say about the game yesterday is how Kobe didn’t flinch when Barnes faked throwing the ball at him. No mention of Bean’s complete failure stepping over the line on the “tying” three (dumbdi*k, if Lebron would have made that play he’d be called a “dumb monkey” or something like that……wait….oops…Lamar did that with class yesterday,my bad)and failing in the clutch to win it. Such a shame. The one man Laker attack is back and the rest of the league know’s it. Kobe is shooting great in 4th quarters and really has his mid-range game going, but there is not other offensive threat for them late (like a certain team in Miami) and the fear factor that the Lakers seemed to have at the beginning of the season is long gone. Make’s me happy, must be making the stomach’s turn of the Laker faithful everywhere, which is a shame.

Apolo Anton OhNoHeDidn’t. My Post Up brings the girls to the yard. Damn right, it’s better than yours.
    - After 3 straight losses, the Lakers’ spirits have been down-graded to The Butthurt Locker.
    - Barnes went intimidating Kobe the wrong way. All you gotta do is show a picture of his wife pointing out his curfew and he’ll flinch more than Zoidberg when hearing the word “food”.
    - Artest got the word “defense” dyed into his hair in Hindi, Hebrew, and Japanese. Unfortunately, the Japanese character for “defense” is the same character as “Getting Beat off the Dribble”, and “Time Bomb”.
    - Other than the Hyperizin commercials, I haven’t seen Rashard dunk. What’s the point of taking Pen!s-Enhancing Drugs if you can’t facial somebody?
    - I love love loooove seeing White Chocolate in the league. /Holly moment
    - JaVale McGee had 5 blocks against the Celtics last night. 3 of the Celtics elderly are now in the hospital.
    - Beef: James Harden’s beard vs. Baron Davis’ beard.
    - Mo Williams must be lactose intolerant cause his J hasn’t been butter for a while.
    - Brandon Jennings changed his motto from “Stay Humble, Stay Hungry” to “Kind of a Douche”. His hair looks like a skunk shat in a straight line.
    - Yo Rose I’m very happy for you and Imma let you finish but Durant is the most humble up-and-coming superstar of all time. OF ALL TIME!
    - Apparently Ghostface Przybilla injured his knee in the shower…I think it’s a cover up to Oden beating him with his club.
    - I still don’t get Twitter. Like when you do the @ thing but the sports star/movie star doesn’t respond, you look like a total idiot.Social networking is supposed to be done on the playground.
    - Lil Wayne is the 2nd best rapper in jail right now. Wait, is DMX out of jail? Nevermind then.
    - LeHate of the day: LeBron has a picture of himself dunking over Tim Duncan taped up in his locker. Haters gon hate.

The Lakers definately need to fix multiple things if they need to repeat. But, the playoffs are a whole different animal and no coach is more qualified to right the ship than PJax. This season reminds me a lot of 2000-2001 for LA when they won defended their first Kobe-Shaq title and won 56 regular season games. Not saying that they will go 15-1 in the second season and repeat, but they are definatley going to need to change some things and if they can play their best ball, they are still the favorites.

And the most valuble commenter of the year goes to…..Anton!!!!

    Anton just made my morning.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

FYI: EVERY team in the league has lost three games in a row this year.

  • The D Train

i turned on the game midway through the fourth and the first thing i heard from Breen was that Kobe was having “a monster 4th quarter”…they then proceeded to run the following graphic: Kobe 5-13, 13pts in the quarter. wow. i guess i didn’t realize 38% shooting constituted a “monster quarter.” oh well. also, i ask the same damn question that i asked after watching the Lake Show last Sunday: has Derek Fisher ever committed a foul? and to also reiterate, i hate that f()cking midget still.

  • http://Www.twitter.com Darksaber

Jesus Anton, that.was.funny! Lactose intolerant Mo, non facial giving Rashard… Oh my!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Myles don’t let these guys know that. Only the Lakers 3 game losing streak means that the season just ended lol. Idiots.

  • Bruno

still thinkin’ LA for champs this year and I ain’t flinchin’ either

I’ll worry in the playoffs. Also fwiw, if I’m the lakers I’m much more concerned about the Lakers than cavs. I’d much rather go to a game with Odom, Artest,Pau, Bynum and even Fisher and Farmer than the cavs lineup. They’re terrible without Lebron. Of course I don’t think Matt Barnes’ fugazi wanksta as* is going to scare anybody in the playoffs either. And if he’s your toughest guy ,which he is on the magic, you’re not very tough.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

The Magic than the cavs f*ck me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

The Lakers have 1 bench contributor. One. Uno. Lamar Odom. The two back up points are about as efficient at James posting abilities, so let a 6 man team (well, 5 and a quarter with Fish’s non-existent play at times and Bynum’s constant foul trouble)take on the rest of the best of the league and see what their record is this season against the Magic, Nuggets and Cavs, as compared to last year. Keep the fantasy alive.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

The key thing about the Lakers losing three in a row is that it puts their “definitely going to repeat, no doubt” status in jeopardy. Of course, every team has lost three in a row. The Lakers were not suppose to be just ‘every team.’ They were suppose to be the 2010 NBA Champion write-ins. That is why this is a bigger deal than how Myles and James are playing it.
Myles was pretty down-to-earth about his Lakers predictions, but James was predicting ‘fo ‘fo ‘fo at the beginning of the year, so I find it ironic he’s shushing people right now

  • http://Slamonline.com Mvp23100

Cavs are wrecking whoever comes out the west in 6

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Juk’s lol. There is no way I said fo-fo-fo … that sh1t is gay!!
I thought the Lakers would win in 6 against Celtics this year in the playoffs. But I do believe that the Magic or Cavs will be right there. Lakers still win. But Lakers will be the late arrival in the finals do to trouble with getting there.
When everyone was saying the Lakers are going for 70 wins, I knew it wasn’t going to happen. Same with when the season started I thought bron or BRoy were going to be head to head for MVP. Once Kobe started balling before he was hurt I thought he would steal it from Bron. But in no way did I say fo fo fo!!!! lol Come on now.

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Lakers. Anyone who watched the Lakers last 25 games from last season remembers how awful they looked and that team won the championship. Off course the other elite teams have all improved.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

I know you literally didn’t say that, but you were riding them at the 100% championships, no doubt in your mind at the beginning of the year.
So the fact that you’re downplayin’ the Lakers three game skid as playoff time approaches is a tid bit ironic!

  • jumpman3224

MVP – The cavs have a great team and certainly are the favorites to come out of the east. But, trust me no Cleveland Sports team will ever be a lock to win a championship. Too much history and bad mojo. Not saying they won’t win, I just wouldn’t write it in yet.

  • jumpman3224

    are* a great team

  • http://missjia.com meloMan2.0

Anton needs a job at SLAM… Asap!!!

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

    @Jukai
I have never been 100% confident in this Laker team I’ve always said that Bynum should be coming off the bench because Kobe and Pau can’t get into an offensive Rhythm with Bynum on the floor. In the last three seasons the Lakers have been at their best with Kobe/Pau/Odom as the big 3. Remeber Bynum was awful in the playoffs last year and the Lakers didn’t really take off until the Lamar/Kobe/Pau trio clicked in game 5 of the Denver series.

  • NBA kid

@Anton, idk about Durant being humble. I was at the thunder-kings game last night and he got a technical for yelling out “and one motherf***er!” after he made a shot over donte greene. This was after he’d been calling out his shots the whole night

  • jumpman3224

The reason Lakers fans are still confident in Finals chances is simple. They are the only team that has won a championship as they are currently constructed (Boston used to have this guy named Garnett).
