Can the Bucks Complete Shocking Upset of Hawks?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Milwaukee walked into the Highlight Factory last night, and did the unthinkable. They took advantage of mistakes on the Hawks’ end — Joe Johnson fouling out, Jamal Crawford’s misses late — and withstood the pressure (and their own shortcomings) to take a 3-2 series lead, with Game 6 set for Friday night in Bucks Country.

Following the crushing loss, the Hawks did not sugarcoat things; they all acknowledged how serious the situation is.

Mike Woodson told The AJC the obvious: it’s win or go home time.

“It was tough loss, but it’s a seven-game series; now we’ll see what we’re made of,” Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. “Our backs our against the wall. Now we’ve got to go to Milwaukee and get a win, and bring it back home in front of our fans.”

“We had control of the game, but our lack of composure coming down the stretch let it get away,” Woodson said.

There’s no doubt that Atlanta has the better team in this series, which leads me to believe they’ll find a way to tie things up tomorrow night, and eventually eliminate the Bucks.

What the Bucks have proven is that no matter the fact that their leader on the court is a 20-year old rookie (albeit, one with ice water coursing through his veins), they are by no means pushovers.

“Fear the Deer.” It’s a statement that had turned into some kind of running joke once Andrew Bogut went down for the rest of the year. Now? No one is laughing. Least of all the Atlanta Hawks.

@Myung, youre a true fan…support your team through good and bad, thats how european fans generally are about their teams..somehow i feel like lots off americans jump from one to another, thats bullsh1t

  • vtrobot

@ myung: i’ve know that you’re one of the biggest hawks fans on here as well as lang, and ree roe (who’s fun to debate about KG). i’m first and foremost a fan of the game and was hoping the hawks would do better this year. luck is a big part of success in the playoffs and it’s too bad that the hawks seem to be going through a stretch where they’re not playing well together now. credit to a tough MIL team, but i think it would be a very different story if this was the hawks team from eariler times this season. as others said, they’re definitely the east version of DEN right now.

Very true what Sporting-lisboa just said. Supporting your team through the tough stretches makes the good ones all that sweeter. For instance I have been a fan of Inter Milan for +10 years, they lost anything up until a 4 years ago, and I was ridiculed daily by friends etc. Better belive I dissed out some die-hard gloating last night. (sorry for straying of Bball and into football).

Thanks, Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers. But again, as much as I frown upon bandwagon jumping, it’s understandable with certain teams. For example, if your ownership is inept like Golden State’s or Atlanta’s, and you don’t see any hope for the future, isn’t it kind of absurd to keep writing out checks for $15,000 for courtside season tickets? I think eventually, people have to draw the line somewhere, especially in this down economy, and you have to let your actions (not buying tickets) do the talking. I was fortunate enough to have the finances to buy Hawks tickets for the past 10 years, but if someone doesn’t have that sort of disposable income, I’m not in a position to judge them for choosing to spend their money on other things. The fact is, your local basketball team isn’t the most important thing in the world. My wife and I just had our first baby this past September, which happened to precede my beloved Hawks most successful season since 1998. I’m one of those rare people who can say I went to more games when we were winning 13 games or 26 games in a season than this year (when we won 53) because my priorities changed. It doesn’t mean I jumped off the bandwagon. I just means that as much as I love my Hawks, there’s more to life than hoops (which is almost sacrilege on SLAMonline, I know). I will always preach fan loyalty, but I cannot cast stones at those who don’t practice it. Bandwagonism is everywhere (not just in sports). It’s most definitely prevalent in the city of Atlanta. C’est la vie, right?

When did SLAM assign MooButter as the grammar nazi?

  • vtrobot

myung, you’re jumping off!!! ha ha. just kidding, true fans like you are what make these boards great. kids >>>>>> greater than following b-ball. enjoy all of the insanity. raise that kid to love your hawks. their season ain’t done yet.

Robert is CLEARLY smoking rocks. Hawks are a mid level team that got jumpd by skiles s squad. Its crazy to thinkthey could have draftd deron and brandon. Altho, that second pick would have probly been a diff number. If joe leaves, where does that leave the hawks?

@myung: i wish i’m a die hard fan of one team. i’m a fan of NBA but i don’t really have a team that i’m 100% behind at all times. i think it makes watching more fun because there’s more “at stake”.

Im a die hard Nets fan all my life true story

I am 100% ATL (Hawks, Braves, Falcs-you name it),….but those SOBs peed on their fans last night. They lose this series-Joe Cool is GONE !…Baldy(Woodson) will be back as an assistant High School coach!……and the Burds will never see the playoffs again. This is ridiculous ! But when you play with Tracey McGrady(I do not have to life weights to improve) mentality (or arrogance), You Get Whatcha Get !……Those Punk Moes BETTER win tomorrow, or there will be another NBA team up for sale !…..Bandages !

ALERT: Brandon Jennings actually did not win rookie of the year. That honor went to Tyreke Evans. Last I heard they’re not handing out awards for marketing campaigns and haircuts. If BJ had been drafted by the Kings he wouldn’t be in the playoffs either.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

ALERT: Tyreke played on a sorry team and got alot of garbage points and assits when his team was getting blown out. Watch games please, BJ is the Rookie of the year, plus without his point guard ablities, which Tyreke doesn’t have like a shot. BJ led his team to playoff contention and will beat the ATL Shawty’s.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

    ALERT:
Using ALERT in a post is kind of wack, I feel the wackness dripping off of me while doing it.
That said, Tyreke got garbage stats and Brandon Jennings rode the effing pine behind Luke Ridnour in many a fourth quarter.
Neither of them was as perfect as people like to pretend. Besides, Emeka Okafor is a former rookie of the year.

    Ty The Seed

Gimme BJ leading a team NO ONE THOUGHT WOULD DO ANYTHING to the playoffs, DESPITE MISSING THEIR LEADING TWO GUARD AND CENTER.

Reke avg 20-5-5 is nice, but on a crap team that did nothing? Hardly impressive. As is Curry’s flourishing on the most offensive slash defensively challenged team in the league.

Look at BJ3′s playoff #’s…that says it all. Doing something when it matters…

Bucks take the series Friday in Milwaukee as the city loses it’s mind

Allenp – Thanks for keeping me up to date on your internet cool-bro etiquette. — I’ve said it myself that Brandon Jennings could be an MVP someday (but I doubt it), while ‘Reke totally deserves the ROY trophy. What bugs me is clowns who haven’t seen either of them play basing their decision on Jenning’s picture on an ad and a couple of really amazing games, while they ignore his sometimes terrible decisions with the ball and Tyreke’s calm grown-man efficiency. 20-5-5 is amazing for a rook. When Lebron won the ROY did he join a good squad or make a deep run into the playoffs? Just because Jennings has cool haircuts and mugs for a camera sometimes, that doesn’t give star-struck ‘fans’ the right to take away what he did for his organization or the amazing debut he had in the league.

I think what they need to do for the 2nd round is just tape Andrew Boguts Arm, from the shoulder to the wrist. Just tape it STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR… he can score more with his left hand in a 7 game series than Dwight Howard will score in his entire career. Just tape that busted @rse arm straight up…. FEAR THE DEER

Brandon Jennings is the man. I can’t believe most of you people doubted him like crazy before the playoffs even began. Someone (I forget who)even said Jennings would ride the pine in the playoffs and get no more than 20 minutes of action a game… What’s the result? 25 points and a 3-2 lead.

    mj23:
“Jennings will not be able to handle Jameer Nelson. He is much stronger and also very quick. Howard will dominate inside and there is no way 83 year old Kurt Thomas can keep up with Dwight. ”

you cant match a team by its player sheet
    for example atl vs mil
Josh smith and al horford were way too athletic and young to match up against “83″ year old kurt thomas

mike bibby was way too experienced to match up against rookie brandon jennings

John salmons would definitely not match up with superstar Joe Johnson

Milwaukee has no bench while Atl has the league’s 6th man

i bet thats what you said when you saw these two teams on paper.

  • giogolo

Atlanta’s perfromance in game 5 left my mind blank towards the end of the 4th qr.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

    Compton Cali’s own B. Jennings!

  • BostonBaller

This is what I’m talking about, fans like Myung! We ride with out teams through good and bad (and horrible!). I have those hard to watch Celtics days burnt into my brain forever but I still watched AND cheered (Never boo’d ). I started wearing black Celtics caps with Black and Green Shamrocks on them in support and mourning. lol. Now those caps are a hot item and expensive. It does make the wins that much sweeter and a Championship really puts you over the top. I’m looking for #18 this year.
