Can the Bucks Complete Shocking Upset of Hawks?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Milwaukee walked into the Highlight Factory last night, and did the unthinkable. They took advantage of mistakes on the Hawks’ end — Joe Johnson fouling out, Jamal Crawford’s misses late — and withstood the pressure (and their own shortcomings) to take a 3-2 series lead, with Game 6 set for Friday night in Bucks Country.

Following the crushing loss, the Hawks did not sugarcoat things; they all acknowledged how serious the situation is.

Mike Woodson told The AJC the obvious: it’s win or go home time.

“It was tough loss, but it’s a seven-game series; now we’ll see what we’re made of,” Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. “Our backs our against the wall. Now we’ve got to go to Milwaukee and get a win, and bring it back home in front of our fans.”

“We had control of the game, but our lack of composure coming down the stretch let it get away,” Woodson said.

There’s no doubt that Atlanta has the better team in this series, which leads me to believe they’ll find a way to tie things up tomorrow night, and eventually eliminate the Bucks.

What the Bucks have proven is that no matter the fact that their leader on the court is a 20-year old rookie (albeit, one with ice water coursing through his veins), they are by no means pushovers.

“Fear the Deer.” It’s a statement that had turned into some kind of running joke once Andrew Bogut went down for the rest of the year. Now? No one is laughing. Least of all the Atlanta Hawks.

The real question is: can Atlanta not choke this away?

  • BackInBlack

if brandon Jennings doesnt go 8-20 every game, than yea they’ve won the series

  • http://springbored.net letsmotor

the bucks are looking like the blazers: one guy gets injured, another guy steps us. It was great watching Johnson and Salmons go at it–offensively and defensively–last night.

Milwaukee is impressing me…I thought they’re win 1 or 2 games at best.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

yay – BJ showing you what a real ROY does….

  • heartlandG

So if tha Hawks get eliminated, Hawks still goin pay Woodson? thats tha question, I think he deserve that bread for making Hawks not tha laughing stocc in tha league… Buccs my squad tho, hope they pull it off. Jennings tha truff! even on live!

  • mj23

Hawks are turning out to be the choke artists of these playoffs. On paper, Atlanta is much more talented than the Bucks, but I think Milwaukee just has better coaching and are playing with more heart. Bottomline: Neither team has a chance against the Magic and will be swept, so this series is irrelevant. The game last night was just ugly and these teams don’t look like they belong in the playoffs.

  • http://www.sovainmag.com Sovain

The Hawks will succumb to the pressure and be defeated by Milwaukee in Game 6. Atlanta hasn’t won a road playoff game since it made the playoffs in 2008. They’re not a resilient crop of players and Joe Johnson doesn’t have that killer instinct to carry a team. You’re best player is not suppose to foul out of a playoff game, at home. Seldom do you see that occur. Jennings is official and the ROY

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

    that game was the *sheeeeeeeet*!

  • JoeMaMa

Okay Lang, we’re waiting for your comment….

  • BackInBlack

would the raptors be in the playoffs if they picked brandon jennings?

  • vtrobot

@ sovain: i don’t know man. i’m a celts fan, but i gotta stick up for joe. that dude is a bad-ass closer. yes, i don’t recommend fouling out of playoff games, but i’ve seen joe hit a ton of unbelievable, late-game shots over the past couple years. i think having joe and jamal gives the hawks some of the best closing capabilities in the league. the hawks just seem to unfortunately being going through a time when they don’t seem to be playing well as a team. too bad ’cause that might be the most athletic team in the league. i have a feeling that zaza is going to step in and totally save the day. actually, bucks will move on.

  • BostonBaller

Joe J is for real so don’t sleep on him. How big is that bus that people keep throwing players under. lol. Who says the Magic would sweep either team? That is a bit much if you ask me. Who says Howard will be on the court the whole time? Who says the Magic shooters won’t go cold? Who covers Jennings and the Bucks have a couple of other scorers too. That is the problem when people haven’t seen a team all year and just assumes they are an easy win.

  • Rikson

No one is laughing. Least of all the Atlanta Hawks – next to it a picture from al laughing – great stuff

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

BJ = clearcut ROY….without Bogut, Bucks up 3-2. not even in the playoff discussion without BJ. where is tyreke’s team now? on the couch watchin jennings.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Kurt Thomas’ +/- score was CRAZY! It was something like +21!

  • mj23

BostonBaller: Jennings will not be able to handle Jameer Nelson. He is much stronger and also very quick. Howard will dominate inside and there is no way 83 year old Kurt Thomas can keep up with Dwight.

  • robert

bostonballer made the one comment on here that makes since, and i will say this whoever said both teams didnt look like they belong in the playoffs is a fucking retard….no both teams looked like they belonged in the playoffs one of the most hard fought games of the playoffs, and i will say this to magic fans salmons and jennings will be able to get howard in foul trouble very very early, and beyond dwight howard and vince carter you have an empty bench the bucks are the ONLY i repeat ONLY team in the NBA that is deep enough to play thier 2nd squad against another teams 1st squad get their guys rested and still hold a lead or stay close in a game, orlando cant clevland cant and boston cant plain and simple i think of course the magic will win they should win, but if they are thinking like some of you are…they wont Millwaukee has more heart than the entire eastern confrence they CLEARLY have the best rookie point gaurd CLEARLY have the best coach in the NBA right now and clearly have the deepest bench with about 9 guys that can go out against any teams starting line and put up 15-20 plus this team plays better D as a whole than Oralando does Orlando’s D consist’s of howard blocking shots but he positions himself horrible he is a horrible shooter maybe the worst ive ever seen doesnt even have a decent hook shot…but with all that said the bucks i dont think will be able to foul him out four games and if they dont they wont stop him from getting into the paint, so Magic in 6

  • Myung

Sovain, Atlanta won a road playoff game vs. the Heat last postseason.

  • Atrain

Bucks will not lose game 6 at home this series is over

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

I don’t know what to say. I warned the world about the Iso-Joe offense in the SLAM cover story, and then last night, when Joe fouled out, the Hawks had no idea what to do. I don’t know why the Hawks refuse to try moving the ball on offense at the end of games. It wasn’t just offense — the Bucks took advantage of the Hawks switching everything defensively. And don’t even get me started about the officiating down the stretch. But there’s honestly no excuse for the way the game ended up. The Hawks should have won, and they didn’t. Bottom line: It’s all on the line Friday night.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

just like jennings said, you’re not a good playoff team til you win on the road. now we find out if atlanta is a good playoff team.

  • kudos

Isn’t this the same hawks that got swept by the cavs last year-minus crawford? Hilarious if they end up losing the first round after getting perenial loser jamal. It’s either the bucks turn to choke, or atl is tryna get by without any defense.

  • funkdoc

I got a feeling that Lang is facing some scary times. And you know what: I actually follow Charles on this one: Atlanta is Denver East. Of course Woodson has no authority, but if you really want it, you listen to him – good or bad coach. Perfect example are the Bucks. What Skiles has done for this team is unbelievable. I just don’t want the Hawks to win this because I’m disappointed in their mentality and nonchalance. Imagine that OKC won the series against LA (imagine), and the Bucks won against ATL, I think the Bucks would have made the better upset. If you just look at their squad, it just doesn’t make any sense at all. A

  • Mauritz

    @Myung
The heat don’t really have home court “advantage”, they just don’t have a crowd that holds their opponents back when they play in Miami. Worst crowd in the NBA.

  • dino

Hawks = choke artists. Jennings = ROY. Coach Woodson = shiniest head ever! Seriously how much time time does he spend buffing his head.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

YEAH, where all the bandwagon highlight factory fans now? mister Lang? with Bogut this series is OVAH by now!!

  • BostonBaller

Much respect to Lang, he is a true fan of the game while still being a Hawks fan. The type of fan I enjoy watching games with b/c we can both root for our teams (CELTICS baby) and still admit when we got a call we shouldn’t have gotten or admit when our team blew it. I’m rooting for the Hawks to win the next game b/c I love 7 game series!!!!Go Hawks then Go Bucks!!!! lol

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

1- Kurt Thomas is a bad man, the ol´dude CAN DEFEND DA POST…2-JoeJohnson is foReal, he seemed a litle desmotivated..love his game and horfords but JSmooves sooo irregular and Jamal kinda like dat too

  • roman

Cant believe the Bucks are gonna win this series. Jennings definitely ROY!

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

oh and MAGIC WILL SWEEP EITHER ONE OF THEM!! AND THAT SLAM COVER: JOE JOSH AND AL WANT A RING…NOWWWWWWW!!!!!!LOLLOLOLAHAHAHAHAHAAH

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    atl is no title contender!

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

To correct up a couple things I read in this thread:
    1) OKC is the most athletic team in the league, not Atlanta.
    2) The Cav’s have an incredibly deep bench.
    3) ‘The’ is not spelled ‘tha’.
    Glad that’s all cleared up.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

tsk tsk Moo, it’s spelled Cavs.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

4)MooButler thinks hes all that sh1t

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i can’t believe someone actually said bucks’ bench is deep. wow.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/CathedralsRecords?feature=mhw4 Earl

The Hawks will win Game 6. No one can close out a series anymore.

  • vtrobot

i have did find it funny when a player on the team with probably the most bandwagony fans in the league calls out the boston fans. seriously, is there a team with a greater increase in the amount of fans during the regular season compared to the playoffs? for being in such a big city, and having a pretty good team, the hawks don’t draw d*ck to their games. @ Moo B: OK. what’s ATL? the 2nd most? @ dino: shiny head and super thick goatee. that sh*t is bushy. he should dye like artest did to try to motivate his team. it might be the only strategy he’s got left.

  • riggs

so the cavs, celtics and magic didnt?

  • Robb

I like how the Bucks are playing through every obstacle, however I must say they didn’t win the game yesterday, the Hawks lost it. If Atlanta is eliminated it’s their fault and their fault alone.

  • vtrobot

riggs, you asking me? I think the whole bandwagon fan argument is stupid because EVERY TEAM, in EVERY SPORT, has more fans supporting them when they’re doing well. I don’t care enough to actually dig up #’s but, ATL, continually drawing a low level of attendance, especially considering the size of the city, has to be one of the biggest bandwagon cities in the NBA. Totally empty area 4 or 5 years ago and then completely rocking during the 7 game playoff series with the Celts? That’s not a bandwagon fan base? Bibby is one funny-voiced, ironic dude. Too bad we won’t have another ATL/BOS series this year.

  • Kacey

Almost half of the people in Atlanta are not from here (like myself). People still root for their hometown teams and the superstars of the league. I remember in 2007 when the Lakers came to town and the fans went crazy. They booed when Kobe was called for his once-a-night foul and cheered him on when he was at the free throw line.

  • TyMo

I just can’t understand why Atlanta’s offense completely goes to hell down the stretch of games. I think these guys simply don’t know how to keep their poise and control in regards to their offensive mindsets.

  • underdog

It’s not over yet. Go Hawks!!

  • Tommy Patron

ATL just doesn’t have a player on their team whose strength is moving the ball.

  • Myung

As a Hawks fan who never jumped off the bandwagon and who went to games from 1999 to 2007 when Philips was half empty, I agree with vtrobot. Most of these Hawks “fans” at Philips are most definitely bandwagon fans who weren’t attending games during the lean years. I can’t say I blame them. The ownership was a mess, our coaches were named Kruger, Stotts, and Woodson, the team was built around guys like Shareef, Glenn Robinson, Al Harrington, and Antoine Walker, the roster went through 3 complete re-building phases in an 8 year span, and Billy Knight made terrible draft picks (Marv over CP and Deron; Shelden over Roy) and signings (Speedy Claxton, anyone?). I’m a loyal guy by nature, and basketball is my favorite sport, which was why I stuck by my favorite sports team but I can’t exactly blame people for getting frustrated with the Hawks and jumping off the bandwagon. It is what it is. Does it bother me that these “fans” now come to games when they didn’t support the team during the down times? Yes. But it doesn’t mean I don’t understand their reasoning. It’s human nature, and if you’re not a die hard like me and Lang, why root for a perennial loser?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@Myung, youre a true fan…support your team through good and bad, thats how european fans generally are about their teams..somehow i feel like lots off americans jump from one to another, thats bullsh1t

  • vtrobot

@ myung: i’ve know that you’re one of the biggest hawks fans on here as well as lang, and ree roe (who’s fun to debate about KG). i’m first and foremost a fan of the game and was hoping the hawks would do better this year. luck is a big part of success in the playoffs and it’s too bad that the hawks seem to be going through a stretch where they’re not playing well together now. credit to a tough MIL team, but i think it would be a very different story if this was the hawks team from eariler times this season. as others said, they’re definitely the east version of DEN right now.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Very true what Sporting-lisboa just said. Supporting your team through the tough stretches makes the good ones all that sweeter. For instance I have been a fan of Inter Milan for +10 years, they lost anything up until a 4 years ago, and I was ridiculed daily by friends etc. Better belive I dissed out some die-hard gloating last night. (sorry for straying of Bball and into football).

  • Myung

Thanks, Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers. But again, as much as I frown upon bandwagon jumping, it’s understandable with certain teams. For example, if your ownership is inept like Golden State’s or Atlanta’s, and you don’t see any hope for the future, isn’t it kind of absurd to keep writing out checks for $15,000 for courtside season tickets? I think eventually, people have to draw the line somewhere, especially in this down economy, and you have to let your actions (not buying tickets) do the talking. I was fortunate enough to have the finances to buy Hawks tickets for the past 10 years, but if someone doesn’t have that sort of disposable income, I’m not in a position to judge them for choosing to spend their money on other things. The fact is, your local basketball team isn’t the most important thing in the world. My wife and I just had our first baby this past September, which happened to precede my beloved Hawks most successful season since 1998. I’m one of those rare people who can say I went to more games when we were winning 13 games or 26 games in a season than this year (when we won 53) because my priorities changed. It doesn’t mean I jumped off the bandwagon. I just means that as much as I love my Hawks, there’s more to life than hoops (which is almost sacrilege on SLAMonline, I know). I will always preach fan loyalty, but I cannot cast stones at those who don’t practice it. Bandwagonism is everywhere (not just in sports). It’s most definitely prevalent in the city of Atlanta. C’est la vie, right?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

When did SLAM assign MooButter as the grammar nazi?

  • vtrobot

myung, you’re jumping off!!! ha ha. just kidding, true fans like you are what make these boards great. kids >>>>>> greater than following b-ball. enjoy all of the insanity. raise that kid to love your hawks. their season ain’t done yet.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Robert is CLEARLY smoking rocks. Hawks are a mid level team that got jumpd by skiles s squad. Its crazy to thinkthey could have draftd deron and brandon. Altho, that second pick would have probly been a diff number. If joe leaves, where does that leave the hawks?

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

@myung: i wish i’m a die hard fan of one team. i’m a fan of NBA but i don’t really have a team that i’m 100% behind at all times. i think it makes watching more fun because there’s more “at stake”.

  • bnets

Im a die hard Nets fan all my life true story

  • Chester D

I am 100% ATL (Hawks, Braves, Falcs-you name it),….but those SOBs peed on their fans last night. They lose this series-Joe Cool is GONE !…Baldy(Woodson) will be back as an assistant High School coach!……and the Burds will never see the playoffs again. This is ridiculous ! But when you play with Tracey McGrady(I do not have to life weights to improve) mentality (or arrogance), You Get Whatcha Get !……Those Punk Moes BETTER win tomorrow, or there will be another NBA team up for sale !…..Bandages !

ALERT: Brandon Jennings actually did not win rookie of the year. That honor went to Tyreke Evans. Last I heard they’re not handing out awards for marketing campaigns and haircuts. If BJ had been drafted by the Kings he wouldn’t be in the playoffs either.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

ALERT: Tyreke played on a sorry team and got alot of garbage points and assits when his team was getting blown out. Watch games please, BJ is the Rookie of the year, plus without his point guard ablities, which Tyreke doesn’t have like a shot. BJ led his team to playoff contention and will beat the ATL Shawty’s.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

    ALERT:
Using ALERT in a post is kind of wack, I feel the wackness dripping off of me while doing it.
That said, Tyreke got garbage stats and Brandon Jennings rode the effing pine behind Luke Ridnour in many a fourth quarter.
Neither of them was as perfect as people like to pretend. Besides, Emeka Okafor is a former rookie of the year.

  • Atrain

    Ty The Seed

Gimme BJ leading a team NO ONE THOUGHT WOULD DO ANYTHING to the playoffs, DESPITE MISSING THEIR LEADING TWO GUARD AND CENTER.

Reke avg 20-5-5 is nice, but on a crap team that did nothing? Hardly impressive. As is Curry’s flourishing on the most offensive slash defensively challenged team in the league.

Look at BJ3′s playoff #’s…that says it all. Doing something when it matters…

Bucks take the series Friday in Milwaukee as the city loses it’s mind

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

Allenp – Thanks for keeping me up to date on your internet cool-bro etiquette. — I’ve said it myself that Brandon Jennings could be an MVP someday (but I doubt it), while ‘Reke totally deserves the ROY trophy. What bugs me is clowns who haven’t seen either of them play basing their decision on Jenning’s picture on an ad and a couple of really amazing games, while they ignore his sometimes terrible decisions with the ball and Tyreke’s calm grown-man efficiency. 20-5-5 is amazing for a rook. When Lebron won the ROY did he join a good squad or make a deep run into the playoffs? Just because Jennings has cool haircuts and mugs for a camera sometimes, that doesn’t give star-struck ‘fans’ the right to take away what he did for his organization or the amazing debut he had in the league.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

I think what they need to do for the 2nd round is just tape Andrew Boguts Arm, from the shoulder to the wrist. Just tape it STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR… he can score more with his left hand in a 7 game series than Dwight Howard will score in his entire career. Just tape that busted @rse arm straight up…. FEAR THE DEER

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Brandon Jennings is the man. I can’t believe most of you people doubted him like crazy before the playoffs even began. Someone (I forget who)even said Jennings would ride the pine in the playoffs and get no more than 20 minutes of action a game… What’s the result? 25 points and a 3-2 lead.

  • http://www.freerice.com BallPlayer

    mj23:
“Jennings will not be able to handle Jameer Nelson. He is much stronger and also very quick. Howard will dominate inside and there is no way 83 year old Kurt Thomas can keep up with Dwight. ”

you cant match a team by its player sheet
    for example atl vs mil
Josh smith and al horford were way too athletic and young to match up against “83″ year old kurt thomas

mike bibby was way too experienced to match up against rookie brandon jennings

John salmons would definitely not match up with superstar Joe Johnson

Milwaukee has no bench while Atl has the league’s 6th man

i bet thats what you said when you saw these two teams on paper.

  • giogolo

Atlanta’s perfromance in game 5 left my mind blank towards the end of the 4th qr.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

    Compton Cali’s own B. Jennings!

  • BostonBaller

This is what I’m talking about, fans like Myung! We ride with out teams through good and bad (and horrible!). I have those hard to watch Celtics days burnt into my brain forever but I still watched AND cheered (Never boo’d ). I started wearing black Celtics caps with Black and Green Shamrocks on them in support and mourning. lol. Now those caps are a hot item and expensive. It does make the wins that much sweeter and a Championship really puts you over the top. I’m looking for #18 this year.
