Cavs’ 1st Round Preference: Bulls or Raptors?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors are locked in a tight battle to determine who will be granted the opportunity to be swept by Cleveland in the first round of the Playoffs. It is a fate that the Cavs had a chance to affect last night, and their decision to sit out LeBron James fueled speculation about their preferred opponent once the postseason rolls around.

By playing without LBJ night, some figured this was a clear sign that Cleveland would rather face Chicago in the opening round, since the Bulls were likely to win the game (they did) and Toronto seems to be doomed without Chris Bosh in its lineup (they are).

The Sun-Times explores the issue:

There has been speculation in some places — mostly north of the border — that the Cleveland Cavaliers would rather play the Bulls than the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the playoffs.

Such talk figures to grow now that the Cavaliers chose to sit LeBron James for Thursday night’s game against the Bulls at the United Center — two days after James played 35½ minutes against the Raptors.

”He’s got some bumps and bruises, and we just decided to rest him,” Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said before the game. The Cavaliers already have clinched the best record in the NBA, and James said a few days ago that he wanted to get some rest down the stretch.

The Bulls/Cavs game last night was a lot closer than anyone had anticipated it to be, and judging by LeBron’s wild reactions while sitting (and standing) behind his team’s bench, he wanted the win badly. The decision to sit him out was strictly about preserving his health and energy for the next couple of months.

The Cavs don’t have a preferred first round foe. It doesn’t matter who they face; the opponent — be it the Raptors or Bulls — has no chance whatsoever.

Yeah, I’d prefer the Raptors. Without Bosh they’re nothing, and they’ve been slipping for the last couple months. So you could play that, or you could play a team that’s starting to gel and surge with momentum. Not that either has a chance.

  • ENDS Posted: Apr.9 at 9:08 am
wonder if he’ll sit against the Magic

  • slamfan4life Posted: Apr.9 at 9:11 am
Bron wants to get back @ Chi for what MJ did in the 80s and 90s, and i gotta say he was a total dumbass for dancing when mo hit some wild shots mj wouldnt have done that, kobe wouldnt have done that, james is not a professional but man can that dude ball…..

  • whitey Posted: Apr.9 at 9:14 am
i think that the bulls wouldbe a better match up having the best PG (Derrick Rose) against the best SF (LeBron James) i think that it would be a better match up than some would think and i think that the bulls might slip one in

  • apeman Posted: Apr.9 at 9:19 am
does anyone remember dallas sitting their best players against the warriors een few year ago witch allowed the warriors to make the play-offs instead of the clippers… and the warriors proceeded to blow dallas out in the first round… beware cleveland, karma is a b*tch!

  • LDR4 Posted: Apr.9 at 9:37 am
The Bulls are a better playoff team choice for the NBA as a whole. They are young (for the most part) and skilled. Toronto is banged up and full of jump shooting foreigners. Ratings would be terrible if the Raps got in. Emperor Stern wants a LeBron vs Rose 1st round.

  • vtrobot Posted: Apr.9 at 10:03 am
@ apeman: and then avery went small in game #1. oh, the bad memories. i would think that the cavs would want TOR and the league would want it to be CHI.

  • LA Huey Posted: Apr.9 at 10:03 am
@slamfan4life, I’ve seen MJ dance and there’s good reason he didn’t dance on the sidelines back in the day…

  • Hursty Posted: Apr.9 at 10:14 am
Like Marcel said, it’s most likely going to be a sweep.
If I were the Cavaliers, I’d rather play Chicago, because it’s closer, meaning less travel time.
But Toronto plays no D what-so-ever, and Shaq will have an absolute field day down there. He had like 50pts last year against Toronto. Plus, Bosh is going to be iffy after his face injury.
Chicago at least tries to rotate and communicate.

  • cramzy Posted: Apr.9 at 10:21 am
I’m not trying to sit through four games of raptors/cavs. We need Derrick Rose and the Bulls in the playoffs. At least it should be mildly interesting. There’s history, there’s the Noah-Lebron spat…Bulls could steal a couple games.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.9 at 10:26 am
This wouldn’t be the 1st time a team has done this so I can’t blame the Cavs for what they seemingly are doing. Neither the Raps or Bulls have much of a chance but the Bulls would be a tougher matchup which could tire them out and stretch the series out. That in turn heightens the chances of injuries to key players. I want everyone to stay healthy so I can see some great hoops…Go Celtics!!

  • ab_40 Posted: Apr.9 at 10:28 am
To get shaq back in the rotation toronto would be the choice for more interesting games some storylines and the development of one teams best player who isn’t leaving this summer (Rose, Bosh is a gonner no worries vince will remain the most hated ex-raptor) I just hope jamison is allright that ankle twist looked nasty ah well him shaq and lebron can figure out how t outplay the other teams backcourts throughout the playoffs while casualy sitting in the bench. btw has shaq been to any cavs games?

  • TL Posted: Apr.9 at 10:39 am
Sitting Lebron was kinda tacky… the Cavs want the Bulls because, if Bosh comes back and Toronto starts playing to their potential again, the Raptors are more of threat to stretch the series. The Raps have already beaten Cleveland and have shown they cab beat every elite team. They’re no threat in the long run, but the Cavs stand to get more rest if their first series is against the Bulls.
Tanking a game for position just sucks.

  • NUPE Posted: Apr.9 at 10:55 am
It only makes sense for the Cavs to sit all their starters as much as possible – regardless of who they play. I’m not reading anything into Bron sitting this one out and with that Jamison and Mo sat it out too. If Shaq comes back before the season ends then maybe play the starters 20 min or so just to get them use to Shaq again. The Cavs have nothing to gain by risking the health of their starters but a hole lot they could loose.

  • Mvp23100 Posted: Apr.9 at 11:18 am
I dont think the cavs care either one is a sweep

  • Michael Scorn Posted: Apr.9 at 11:27 am
    fo, fo, fo, fo!

  • niQ Posted: Apr.9 at 11:33 am
Obviously they would want Toronto, everyone’s injured..

  • Durand Posted: Apr.9 at 11:36 am
clearly the cavs want to play toronto, chicago bulls are a better squad. without the injuries they could of been 4th or 5th seed easily but everyone getting healthy the cavs sat lebron because mike brown want to see without lebron how he’s team will measure up and they did a good job he know’s the bulls will get that 8 seed with the injuries in toronto it was good stragety. he play lebron against toronto because he thought they will be 8th seed and want to see how it play out. lebron not coming to chicago because M J killed cavs back n day

  • bouncyman Posted: Apr.9 at 11:42 am
take the best players from both teams and they still couldn’t beat the cavs

  • Dean Posted: Apr.9 at 11:49 am
The issue here is why Lebron played 35+ against the raps two days ago and sits out against the bulls. No issue at all if Lebron sits against the raps and bulls. The integratity of the game is key. Play each game to win, the fans deserve it. Either way, I hope the Cavs get burnt by this.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Apr.9 at 12:17 pm
This will all be pretty funny to come back and read in a couple of weeks.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.9 at 12:45 pm
Mr. Jones, it’s already pretty funny.

  • TyMo Posted: Apr.9 at 12:47 pm
Wow Cavs can’t even beat an average team without Bron. This does not bode well if Bron leaves, which I don’t think he will. But if he does, Cavs will suck.

  • Hum Posted: Apr.9 at 12:50 pm
it’s because the raps game was at HOME while the bulls game was AWAY
they didn’t want to disappoint the fans

  • Anton Posted: Apr.9 at 12:58 pm
@ab_40 not really, he sat up top with Ferry a few times. It’s dangerous for an injured player to be on the Cavs bench, one minute you’re busting a move the next you got a busted ankle.

  • Coney Islander Posted: Apr.9 at 1:17 pm
I could probably pick up a few of you guys to suit up and sweep the Raptors right now!

  • C2 Posted: Apr.9 at 1:47 pm
Hopefully Toronto grabs the 8th seed so I can go watch a game even though they’re going to get murdered x.x

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Apr.9 at 2:07 pm
    Great point, BostonBaller.

  • Mr.Robinson Posted: Apr.9 at 2:07 pm
LeBron asking reporter: “Who do you think we would rather play”? Reporter: Well, uhh, I think… LeBron: IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!!!! I AM THE KING!!! YOU HEAR ME?!!!?? THE f*****G KING!!! I WANT MY RING!!! NOW!!!

  • hemlock09 Posted: Apr.9 at 2:27 pm
    hahaha @ mrrobinson

  • BostonBaller Posted: Apr.9 at 4:11 pm
I just signed a two year contract extension with Team SLAM and it feels great to have such security for me and my Fam. My only problem is that I thought the players got paid not the team. lol. I’ve been down since ish #1, long live the King of Hoops. SLAM!!!

  • CHRIS Posted: Apr.9 at 4:34 pm
who knows D.ROSE can get hot in a few games!! do the cavs really want to play the UNEXPECTED?

  • S.Man Posted: Apr.9 at 4:46 pm
You would think they’d rather play my Raptors, half the team is injured. Although, I do agree with them wanting to play Chicago. Having it too easy won’t prepare them for anything.

  • Jose Posted: Apr.9 at 5:50 pm
Id want Chi-Town to just so the games are close. eck i think the bulls could steal 1 win from cleveland. it wuldnt be fun watchin a banged up toronto team vs the #1 in the L. nothing entertaining bout that

  • John Posted: Apr.9 at 6:50 pm
the Cavs would rather want to face the Bulls, the Raptors perimeter bigs would be somewhat of a problem for Shaq or Big Z. That probably the only weakness in the Cavs is their ability to guard shooting bigs like Rashard Lewis and Turk. But no matter what, either team is still going to get smashed

  • Sparty's Law Posted: Apr.9 at 7:38 pm
It really doesn’t matter, it will be a sweep either way. When healthy the Raptors are a MUCH better team than the Bulls, but they’re not and they haven’t played up to potential since the All-Star break.

  • Durand Posted: Apr.9 at 9:09 pm
the bulls need a nice 2 guard that can post up hit the long ball joe johnson is perfect. and if they could get david lee from knicks. them two a perfect fit for the team

  • Durand Posted: Apr.9 at 9:11 pm
The bulls need a 2 guard and one post player thats half decent and a better coaching staff

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Apr.9 at 9:24 pm
If Cavs play the Bulls, they are NOT sweeping. Raptors maybe, but the Bulls are winning at LEAST 1 game. People thought the Bulls would be swept by Boston last year, and what happened? 7 Games, baby.

  • Johnny Posted: Apr.9 at 10:58 pm
a healthy bulls can’t even beat the Nets
    Go raps

  • Orlando Green Posted: Apr.10 at 12:29 am
Raptors are bruised and battered.. it would be alot easier against them. I’d rather see Bulls make it in, Rose is great to watch!

  • Dacre Posted: Apr.10 at 1:50 am
Them Raptors are a half team beat up an missing chemistry and key guys. The Bulls WANT that 8th seed match up with Cleveland. If I’m Mike Brown I would rather see Raptors limp at me in the first round.

  • LilKDub503 Posted: Apr.10 at 6:15 am
I’d want Raptors for one reason and one reason only: Derrick Rose. I really don’t want to get dunked on at this point, nor do I want him leading his team anywhere near mine. Rose is proven to be THE nuisance. Let’s not test him again, because he is no rookie anymore.

  • underdog Posted: Apr.10 at 8:00 am
    Seriously, does it even matter?

  • Hursty Posted: Apr.10 at 11:05 am
Teddy – true. But you can’t really compare the two potential series match-ups. Boston was missing it’s two PF’s (KG and Powe), whilst this Cleveland team is (expected to be) fully healthy, depending on Jamison.
That Bulls team is also > ’10 version, purely because this Bulls team can’t shoot for sh*t, after loosing Gordon and Salmons. They replaced Tyrus with Warrick in essence.

  • ai come back Posted: Apr.10 at 5:17 pm
u realize that lebrons purposeley is sitting out these games for the health of him and his team as well as slight love to his childhood team

  • NBA kid Posted: Apr.10 at 5:19 pm
umm some of you guys are idiots. Cleveland is closer to toronto than Chicago…

  • quiet storm Posted: Apr.10 at 5:56 pm
    RAPS IN 4!

  • Chi-Town Stand up! Posted: Apr.10 at 9:11 pm
If u think my Bulls r gettin swept then ya’ll r smoking grass! D-Rose showed last year that when the Playoffs start it’s time 2 Kill! 36 and 11 in your very 1st game in the playoffs as a rookie also! Can Lebron say that! BTW D-Rose will win a ring before its all said and done! The list that he joined of T.D., Kareem and The Big O, of players who scored at least 34 in their 1st playoff game shouldn’t be taken for granted. If it was that easy then it woul be more than just 4 names on that list! Chi-Town stand up!

  • C-Lo_The_Great Posted: Apr.10 at 10:14 pm
@TL raptors being more dangerous than the bulls is more of a joke than then entire raptors squad the bulls had 5th seed on lock before all the injuries and stuff and toronto was sucking with a full healthy team that hedo signing was great wasnt it?

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.10 at 10:29 pm
LEbron had a triple double his first playoff game… List is even shorter for that than it is for 34 in first playoff… yer pretty uneducated.

  • TEddy-the-Bear Posted: Apr.10 at 11:10 pm
No need to call the dude uneducated… But yeah, the triple double debut list is hardly a list at all; 2 players: Magic and LeBron, if I’m not mistaken.

  • Chi-Town Stand up! Posted: Apr.10 at 11:38 pm
Don’t compare Lebron and Magic, cause Lebron got swept in the finals! Educate me on that then. Where does that put his greatness now? Whats the difference with those other 3 that seperates them from Lebron? They all won in their first trip to the finals!

  • The Philosopher Posted: Apr.11 at 1:16 am
    Shout out to Fennis Dembo.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Apr.11 at 3:34 am
This is also true, Chi-Town… But Big O and Lew Alcindor played together; if that duo DIDN’T win a chip I’d be shocked. Tim Duncan played with David Robinson against a Knicks team without their star and leader Patrick Ewing… LeBron James got to the Finals pretty much by himself. Yes he got swept, but Timmay Duncan will do that to a weak team.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.11 at 10:58 am
Chi-Town: You’re not making sense. Take away Lebron from his finals team and take away Kareem from any of his finals teams/take away Big O from his finals team/take away Timmy D from any of his finals teams… and they SLAUGHTER Lebron’s team.
Lebron pretty much raised the level of his team BY HIMSELF.
Aw, whatever, I’m done with this, this dude’s crazy. Can’t wait for Lebron to get his ring, people like this will just disappear because their only argument (the weakest of the weak) will be gone.

  • Wallball Posted: Apr.11 at 11:26 am
Leave it up to the refs….It looks like the league doesn’t want to take any chances on Chicago. Thanks league officials for totally blowing/fixing that Bulls/Nets game the other day.It was horrible! Even the replays shown and the no foul call rule on D-Rose was ridiculous…

  • 3233569658 Posted: Apr.11 at 12:23 pm
Give them whichever team there going to lose to the Magic anyways.
    Laker vs Magic finAls AGain

  • James aka... Posted: Apr.11 at 3:16 pm
I suppose it depends whether the cavs want a 4 game sweep or a 4 game sweep.

  • GametimeWeezy Posted: Apr.12 at 1:11 am
Guys im gonna have to side with Chi-Town on this one only cuz last years Bulls WERE a PROBLEM for the Celtics. How many overtime games did they push the defending champs? Too many to NOT be taken seriously as that was a HUUGE step in their development. Only thing is…..Derrick Rose wasnt the BEST player in that series. He might have been the flashiest…but i dont see the Bulls doin much this year without BEN GORDON! Mt. Vernon STAND UP!

  • GametimeWeezy Posted: Apr.12 at 1:13 am
But anyways i dont think it matters to The King. Whatever ppl wanna speculate he only sat cuz they can afford that luxury. Not cuz they really care who they are SWEEPING in the first round.

  • Justin Posted: Apr.12 at 6:56 am
slam4life…Do you really think LeBron wants to “get back at Chicago for what they did in the 80′s and 90′s”? That’s just dumb. You are right though. MJ wouldn’t have done all that jumping around and cheering. You know why? Because he never would have asked to be rested before the playoffs, especially a road game. MJ always knew that a lot of the fans in those games paid to come see him play and didn’t want to disappoint them with something like needing rest for the playoffs. He didn’t rest in his mid 30′s but ESPECIALLY not in his early 20′s like LeBron is

  • Joe Posted: Apr.16 at 2:48 am
slam4life, I don’t think LeBron would want to seek revenge on the Bulls for the Cavs misfortunes in the 80s and 90s. That was nearly 20 years ago and is James could probably care less. Remember, he grew up a Bulls fan not a Cavs fan (see citation below). http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071004&content_id=2250946&vkey=ps2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
