Daryl Morey Tempers Expectations on Yao Ming

The Rockets’ GM tells the team website that his big fella might not be 100% until next season’s Playoffs. Yikes: “On Yao Ming’s progress and the minutes he can play next year: ‘I don’t know. I think for sure by playoff time we think he can be 100 percent back, which is the most important time, obviously. He can be back to where he was last year when he was playing at a high level. What his exact ramp-up will be, I don’t think anybody knows exactly how that will happen. Yao is on schedule with the doctors. I think he’s at two-thirds of his body weight on the treadmill. Each week it ramps up a little bit and each week he’s responded great so we expect him to be back at the start of the preseason. If it’s not exactly that, we’re OK with it. Again, we’re focused on having him in the playoffs next year and clearly we’d like to have him for a large (percentage), if not all of the regular season as well.”‘

Wow. That will be a long hiatus.. that’s like 2 years.

They are doing the smart thing, which is to not let him in until the latter half of the season (or only play him on a limited basis at the beginning), which theoretically would allow him to warm up and reintegrate in around 50 games and be at his peak for the postseason.

    if they make the postseason…

good thing that the kevin martin trade is working out for us in the meantime.

Niq, he’s not going to be gone for two years…thats’ just when they expect him to be back at an all-star level, he could still play well before that…

Yao is done. I don’t see it. Dude is too injury prone. It’s another Bill Walton we’re seeing here.

I wish Daryl Morey would provide some obscure statistics to back this up.

Let me guess- he won’t opt out this summer. Hopefully they won’t renew him afer next season.

it’s too early to say he’s done…this wasnt just any surgery. It was to give him better foot aligment to avoid future breaks…worked for Big z very well, so don’t sleep on him just yet

@Ryan Jones: oooh, unwarranted low blow. people hate on sport statistics wayyy too much

so, does that mean we can make sure he isn’t on the allstar ballot from the get go? I don’t want Amare and Durant missing out on those crucial early season votes.

Yao is the best big man in the league when healthy. Get well.

I don’t think Amar’e or KD will be affected by Yao returning to the ballot. KD is obviously not a centre. Amar’e will be in the eastern conferernce next season anyways so he’ll have to go against Howard (if he is stupid enough to be listed at C) or LeBron/KG/Bosh? at forwards.
