David Kahn Wants a Superstar in Minnesota

The T-Wolves’ GM says Al Jefferson isn’t a go-to-guy at crunch time, and is on the hunt for a closer. The Star Tribune reports: “When he took the job, Kahn publicly questioned whether Al Jefferson is the No. 1 player on a contender. After 15 victories and 64 losses, Kahn and Rambis have concluded they need a player that Rambis compares from recent games to Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant or Miami’s Dwyane Wade and Kahn calls ‘our Brandon Roy.’ Too many nights the Wolves compete for 40 minutes and then play what Kahn calls “absolutely dreadfully” for the other eight. ‘We need our person who we can get the ball and say, ‘Please stop this, please make this better,’ Kahn said. ‘It has been revealing how badly we need that star player here. It’s obvious, isn’t it? It’s obvious to anybody. I would think our players understand that. I was very up front when I took the job that Al wasn’t that player on a championship team. I was trying to take some pressure off Al by saying that because he’s not. Probably Al even understands that. He needs help, lots of it. We have to find out how to obtain a player of that magnitude.’ Kahn calls such a search ‘No. 1 on my to-do list.”‘

way to uplift jeffersons confidence and trade value…

  • neaorin

He should trade away Randy Foye for Brandon Roy. Wait, Foye’s not on the team anymore. Oh well.

  • Do Work

    Bring us Evan Turner!

  • Orlando Woolridge

Wow, why say this publicly? Al is having a tough year for sure, but he is coming back from a serious injury this year. They screwed up the draft as well, so I wouldn’t put it all on Al. Damn, that’s harsh!

  • Bash

It’s not a slight on Al, what big man do you know is the go-to-guy for his team in the clutch?

  • T-Money

TD, Dirk, CB4, Pau, STAT even David West.. they all get busy on the block in crunch time.

  • http://Gmail Dirty Frank

TMoney. Pau is not the go to guy. All the guys you mentioned have all star guards getting them the ball except Bosh who has never made it out of the first round.

  • T-Money

Dirty Frank: Pau is not the go-to guy because the second best player in the league is on his team, not because he is a big man. All the big men I mentioned (except maybe West) don’t need to get spoonfed buckets, you give them the ball on the block and you get out of the way. Doesn’t require an all-star guard to do that. Your Bosh/playoffs argument is not relevant. My point is: Al Jeff is not a go-to guy in the clutch because he’s flat-out not good enough, nothing to do with the position he plays. The guy has a 10 inch-vert and needs to fake out the defender out of his shoes to get a shot off. That’s not going to cut it with end of 4th quarter defense.

  • t-change

let him recover first..maybe he ain`t jumping like you think he should..yet it´s his first post knee explosion season..hard to guess if he`ll go on to be more like Stat or more like penny h. returning to the game

pau he was the go-to guy when he was playing for memphis because he wasn’t the second man. Al was very dominant in clutch when he was in boston, when they traded him they thought he was going to be the future of the franchise…maybe its because he needs a star player to motivate him and really show his clutch side.

    I got you now TMoney.

  • LA Huey

Kahn, your problem is your lack of PG depth.

  • T-Money

    LA: lol

  • Joe

I bet his “search for a No. 1 guy” looks somethign like this:…Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker, Rajon Rondo, Chauncey Billups, Baron Davis, Derrick Rose, Mo williams, bring back Stephon Marbury, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Brandon Jennings, Jameer Nelson,

  • http://sevendeu2u.wordpress.com/ Seven Duece

If he would just trade Rubio’s rights to some other team that doesn’t have 8 pg’s, he might get some help right away. Though it would be HYSTERICAL if they get the #1 pick!

  • Sparty’s Law

The only way they are getting a superstar is through the draft. I assume a lot of players would take a paycut to not have to live in Minnesota.

  • Shem

A lot of people may not like what I have to say BUT,I dont think there are too many big men that can do much without a decent squad. Well neither can a guard but i think you need a good wing player to compliment that big man and of course role players to make it fit. Al is a top 5 center in my opinion. Gasol couldnt do it on Memphis, Bosh aint doing it in TDOT, KG didnt do it in Minni, and the list goes on. They just gotta learn how to draft. They picked 2 pg’s in the top 10 and missed out on the 3 best rookie pg’s in the L today. Gottta make you wonder what would happen if they got Tyreke and Stephen

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out to Gerald Glass.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

There must be a typo in the headline: I think it’s supposed to say “ANOTHER” superstar. The Wolves already have Kevin Love.

  • Groves

cosign Ryan. Rambis or Kahn, i forget who, said that these guys wont be a really good team til jefferson is the second best player on the team…. ummm, hes the second best now and you finished second last!!!!
All you need now is to make love your second best player and jefferson your third, or better still,

    Trade him, start love!

This guy is delusional. I mean, they already have Darko right? pffft

Jefferson isn’t 100% back from injury yet… Wow, glad to know Kahn respects his players when they’re down. I hope they trade Jefferson to a team more deserving of his talents.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

T-Money: Jefferson isn’t GOOD enough? Are you serious?
“The guy has a 10 inch-vert and needs to fake out the defender out of his shoes to get a shot off.”
I guess having great post moves makes you not clutch… I also suppose Pau Gasol jumps out of the gym and does 360 degree dunks at the buzzer. Thus, Pau Gasol is clutch and Jefferson is not.

I think david kahn was the wrong man for his job.

  • chintao

That’s all he said??!?!? I like Rambis-the-player, but Rambis-the coach probably is not up to the task. The Wolves lack some talent, but I don’t think the assembled players are as bad as their record.

Change the jerseys to green and gold, move to Seattle and call yourself the Supersonics and I’m fairly certain things would get better.

methinks that kahn needs a ricky rubio

  • Bart

Kahn is a knob, you have a guy who can get 23 and 11…. wtf sorry Kevin Love is not as good as Al
