Jeanie Buss: Phil Jackson to Coach Next Year, Somewhere

What would a Lakers postseason run be without some additional drama about Phil Jackson’s future? Jeanie, his girlfriend/team VP tells ESPN that Jackson will roam a yet-to-be-determined sideline next season: “I know Phil will be coaching next year, somewhere. Whether it’s here or someplace else I don’t know,’ Buss said. ‘There’s going to be a lot of good jobs that come up this summer.’ Buss wouldn’t elaborate on which jobs might interest Jackson if he doesn’t extend his career with the Lakers. But she was emphatic that the choice isn’t limited to Jackson returning to the Lakers or retiring. ‘I know that he can’t just retire,’ she said. ‘I’m like, ‘Honey, what are you going to do? Are you going to help your kids go change diapers and stuff?’ ‘I think if they win it’s like a no-brainer he’ll come back because he’ll want to win three in a row,’ Jeanie Buss said. ‘But [if they don't win], if there isn’t that connection, he would understand. Plus, my dad has made it very clear he doesn’t want to pay him what he’s been paying him. So that’s kind of hard, too. You could kind of say, in some jobs, well I’m cutting back your hours. But can you see him cutting back his hours? It’s not really about the amount of money, it’s about ‘I can’t give you less effort.’”

admirable frankness. i like that in a millionaire’s daughter

For a Zen Buddhist, Phil sure has a big ego about taking a pay cut from $12 mil. Besides, doesn’t Father Buss know that it’s staying in the family?

This is like, great news and stuff. Although Phil doesn’t do much roaming these days.

  • [...] isn’t Phil Jackson’s last year coaching, but maybe his last in LA. [...]

Time to start fuelling those Jackson wants to coach LeBron rumours,

Phil should go coach a team that doesn’t have one of the greatest players of all time on it.

2 things you can be sure of with Phil: 1- He’ll follow the money. 2- He’ll only take on teams with a transcendent, once-in-a-generation uber-duber star. I take everything he says with the whole freaking saltshaker since he got shown the door by Buss and came back with his tail between his legs.

Why would Jackson coach anything but the best? The all time best coaches all had at least 1 mega star…

I’m sure all coaches have terrible teams on the top of their wish lists. I don’t understand when people downplay a coaches abilities because they have a superstar player or two, do you think it’s easy to coach a player like that? Take a moment to look at it from both sides.

If he can’t coach a superstar how about he works for a former one, ala the Bobcats?

    If DWade goes to Chicago…

“‘I’m like, ‘Honey, what are you going to do? Are you going to help your kids go change diapers and stuff?’”
    awesome.

is that somewhere Charlotte? God that would be awesome. From LB to Phil Jackson. That is like from a 69 Impala to a Ferrari

  • letsmotor Posted: Apr.29 at 3:41 pm
charlotte would be interesting just cause he’d be paired up with Michael. But there’s no one on Charlotte’s team who’s going to go down as one of the ten best ever, so I don’t think Phil will be interested.

  • Michael NZ Posted: Apr.29 at 10:09 pm
Brooklyn ain’t happening for another couple years Dacre… Big Chief Triangle will probably be done by then.

  • negetivekreep Posted: Apr.29 at 11:53 pm
With PJ leaving LA and Dwade leaving MIA How about Riley coming back home for one last chance at greatness and bring back showtime, and another chip. And also his spot back as greatest Laker coach?

Fphil is the one person I hate more than D’An-phony. If Fakin’ Jax gets hired to coach the Knicks, I will not watch another game until he is fired.
