Joakim Noah: Bulls Looking to Shock Cavs, the World

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Nearly everyone — and certainly yours truly — expects the Cavs to sweep Chicago in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. The Bulls qualified for the postseason on the last possible day; Cleveland had the best record in the L (by far); and some guy named LeBron James is involved.

Joakim Noah doesn’t care about any of the above, he’s ready for the Bulls to not only put a scare into Cleveland, but seems to believe they have a shot at winning the series.

Noah tells the AP that people shouldn’t be surprised if something similar to last season’s epic Bulls/Celtics series repeated itself:

The way Joakim Noah sees it, everyone else could be in for a big shock. Particularly LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“Everybody thinks we’re going to get our (butts) whipped. And you know what, we’re going to try to shock the world. That’s what we’re going to try to do. That’s pretty cool, I think.” Beating Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs would be nothing short of stunning, the most dramatic and unlikely twist in a season that’s seen its share.

LeBron and the Cavs heard Noah loud and clear, and tell him to be careful what he wishes for, because he’ll definitely get it. James says Cleveland is a “different monster” this postseason.

Noah will have his opportunity to shock the world, but the reality remains that starting this Saturday, Cleveland has much bigger fish to fry.

Not gonna happen, but hey, I like his confidence…I think they’ll be badly missing Ben Gordon in these playoffs.

  • Bear Posted: Apr.16 at 9:04 am
    I would love an upset.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.16 at 9:12 am
This isn’t gonna be like Boston last season, Bulls. If Shaq plays (and his injury was a blessing in disguise), Yannick’s son is gonna get more reasons to be mad at Bron, cause he’ll dance through to the 2nd round.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.16 at 9:14 am
I’d be very happy if Derrick just said “F this, i’ma get mine” in at least one of the games. The Cavs don’t have an answer for Rose.

  • Tyler Posted: Apr.16 at 9:30 am
what else are the bulls gonna do? Try and not shock the world?

  • T-Money Posted: Apr.16 at 9:34 am
Dark: Nobody does but the Cavs will defend Rose with Delonte, AP and Moon. Mo wil be on Hinrich, not D-Rose.

  • Michael Scorn Posted: Apr.16 at 9:46 am
Just one time I want a team to say that they are just gonna lay down and die, because they are just happy to be there.

  • Lee Posted: Apr.16 at 9:50 am
That is a fantastic picture for this post.

  • WB30 Posted: Apr.16 at 10:14 am
yeah right, and Jared Dudley will be MVP.

  • underdog Posted: Apr.16 at 10:16 am
@T-Money Not even you seriously think, that Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon can lock up Derrick Rose. Delonte? Maybe he’d have a chance if he were fully healthy, and Rose got up on the wrong side.

  • Bruno Posted: Apr.16 at 10:34 am
maybe bulls are not gonna win but they’ll fight every game and that’s something the raptors were not gonna do
    I think cavs 4-2

  • T-Money Posted: Apr.16 at 10:37 am
underdog: moon and ap are loooong. ive never said they were going to lock him up but they can guide him where the help is and try to play him into pull up jumpers. the cavs do a pretty good job of stacking the paint and defending the 3. they let ppl live and die with mid range j’s. as far as west, i think he’s seriously one of the best on the ball defender in the league. he can have success covering about anyone in the L 6’6 and under.

  • rainman10 Posted: Apr.16 at 10:47 am
I love his confidence. He didn’t make an outrageous guarantee, but he said the Cavs are gonna have to work for those victories, whether it’s a sweep or not. Look for the Bulls, mostly Miller and Noah, to be extra physical on James.

  • Mike Posted: Apr.16 at 10:53 am
    Bulls are NOT getting swept

  • Jake Posted: Apr.16 at 11:04 am
Isn’t this what everyone thought about the Celtics last year, even without KG?We saw how that went. The Bulls have lots of big bodies, they’re gonna drop the hammer on Lebron and he will stop driving to the hole and start shooting those crazy 30 foot 3 pointers.Still though,Cavs in 6.

  • Diesel Posted: Apr.16 at 11:09 am
Bulls aren’t getting swept. They’re not winning the series, but they’re not getting swept. And I hope shaq plays because the cavs are a slower, discombobulated team with him in the line up. Plus B-Rad gets under his skin like no other player. Cavs in 6.

  • MooButter Posted: Apr.16 at 11:17 am
I initially thought ertainly not a sweep. Most likely Cavs in 5. But with Noah making statements like this, it might just fire up the Cavs to try and prove them wrong. And don’t think the Cleveland coaching staff isn’t reminding them about the Bulls Celtics series from last year. They wont take them lightly.

  • underdog Posted: Apr.16 at 11:21 am
@T-Money: AP is an infamously bad defender, and Moon is way too tall to be able to keep the pace with Rose, who is imho one of the quickest cat with the ball in his hands. It’s going to be an interesting machup for sure, although I’ll be surprised, if the Bulls manage to win more than one game.

  • Flight Posted: Apr.16 at 11:24 am
God. Noah should just shut his mouth,

  • Sparty's Law Posted: Apr.16 at 11:30 am
I’ll be shocked if they win a game.

  • Anton Posted: Apr.16 at 11:30 am
Dark: True, but Bulls don’t have an answer for Jamison, Shaqtus, nor LeDanceDanceRevolution.

  • letsmotor Posted: Apr.16 at 11:33 am
if a guy from the eighth seed ever said this about the bulls in the 90s, jordan would’ve went crazy and embarrassed them the entire series. let’s see how lebron responds. oh, and who’s gonna guard lebron?

  • RUN'N'GUN219 Posted: Apr.16 at 11:33 am
^ LeDanceDance Revolution. THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST LOL

  • letsmotor Posted: Apr.16 at 11:34 am
    @Anton: LeDanceDanceRevolution?!! Love it!!

  • Joel O's Posted: Apr.16 at 11:41 am
@Anton: Man. LeDanceDanceRevolution. I have no idea how you keep coming up with these. I hope it sticks lol.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.16 at 11:41 am
    Thought Bruno calls him “LeThinkyoucandance”.

  • chiqo Posted: Apr.16 at 11:42 am
is he supposed to say “we’re gonna lose like everyone expects?” much ado about nothing.

  • RUN'N'GUN219 Posted: Apr.16 at 11:44 am
@FLIGHT- WHY SHOULD HE JUST SHUT UP? PLAYERS ARENT ALLOWED TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THERE TEAM? OHH HE SHOULD JUST SAY ” I KNOW THE CAVS ARE GONNA SMASH US, WE HAVE NO CHANCE.” GTFOOH

  • LA Huey Posted: Apr.16 at 11:46 am
I didn’t think the Cavs would sweep. Figured the Cavs were susceptible to a lazy game or 2. But now that they’ve been publicly challenged…

  • Diesel Posted: Apr.16 at 12:00 pm
@Anton – Brad Miller has guarded shaq pretty well throughout the years. And I think Gibson is the mobile type of power forward that can follow jamison to any spot on the court. Lebron is going to murder deng, but I think rose is going to run circles around any of clevelands guards. Cleveland is going to win, don’t get me wrong…I just don’t think its going to be the lopsided victories and sweep everyone thinks its going to be.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.16 at 12:08 pm
Y’all are forgetting htat Ben Gordon was the main reason that Celtics series was even a series last year. The Bulls don’t have that kind of a lights out shooter this year.

  • T-Money Posted: Apr.16 at 12:17 pm
Seriously, I don’t see the Bulls taking a game with the personal stuff going on between Noah and Bron. Bron is going to look to embarass them.

  • Diesel Posted: Apr.16 at 12:22 pm
@wayno – BG shot them out of more games than he won for them. His gunning stopped any ball movement. They play more like a team now. And they didn’t have Deng last year…he’s not a world beater but he’s a decent player.

  • Jukai Posted: Apr.16 at 12:23 pm
Really, in the same way that Hinrich is the most underrated guard-defender in the league, Delotne is definitely number two. As T-Money said, NO ONE can lock down Rose, but if anyone can slow him down, it’s Delonte West.
AP and Moon are long enough to block a few shots while Delonte rests.

  • WOODY Posted: Apr.16 at 12:28 pm
Noah could truly shock the world by getting a shave, haircut and a dentist.

  • Diesel Posted: Apr.16 at 12:33 pm
HAHA Woody – I saw him in Vegas and the dude was wearing a mexican poncho in the club…a poncho! With his hair all poofed out he looked like the Priceline “Big Deal” guy.

  • CB 34 Posted: Apr.16 at 12:34 pm
It’s not even gonna be close. First off, it wasn’t just Ben last playoffs, Salmons was playing crazy and hitting big shots as well. Now, they have Hinrich and Pargo. Flip will probably step up though. The best thing about this is the battle between Andy and Joakim. That’ll be fun to watch. There’ll be a few scuffles in this series definitely.

  • wayno Posted: Apr.16 at 12:56 pm
@ Diesel – I agree that in general BG does that, but in the playoffs last year that series would have been 4-1 Celtics w/o him. He kept them in it and was the main reason they made it as competitive as it was. The lack of KG helped too though.

  • Rob Posted: Apr.16 at 1:07 pm
    lol@WOODY

  • elijah finley Posted: Apr.16 at 1:39 pm
the cavs dance and play 2 much the bulls play on pure heart and energy lebron has 2 take over a game in the fourth when that happens but all the bulls are healthy and ready dont forget the bulls beat the cavs at home there first meeting and jokom blocked lebron’s shot to end the game so upset is the bulls 4 the taking they can beat the cavs there a rival

  • Rich Posted: Apr.16 at 1:53 pm
Yeah, they need BG and/or Salmons. And Deng can’t guard a table. He sucks.

  • niQ Posted: Apr.16 at 2:14 pm
lol wtf. LeDanceDanceRevolution.. where did that come from?hahaha

  • slamfan4life Posted: Apr.16 at 2:19 pm
Not saying Chi’s gonna win the series, but I really doubt shaq has enough left along with Brons old ass crew Magic are gonna beat em in the Con. Finals

  • Mvp23100 Posted: Apr.16 at 3:34 pm
Bron owes the chi for all those mj vs cle years sweep

  • joe shmoe Posted: Apr.16 at 4:19 pm
I hope that was a sarcastic list in the headline.

  • mj23 Posted: Apr.16 at 4:56 pm
Bulls should be able to win at home. Shaq is fat and out of shape, so Lebron and Jamison are the only 2 who’ll give us problems. Cavs should win in 6.

  • Paul Johnson Posted: Apr.16 at 5:19 pm
Michael Scorn Posted: Apr.16 at 9:46 am
Just one time I want a team to say that they are just gonna lay down and die, because they are just happy to be there. LMAO that is classic! Honestly I don’t see the Bulls winning this series. However, I really don’t see them getting swept either. If things do start to tank early. I want to see D-rose just go off one game and get his in a win.

  • Jalepino Sausage Posted: Apr.16 at 6:22 pm
    MVP 23100 True Dat

  • The Seed Posted: Apr.16 at 6:42 pm
    Bulls in six. (Book IT!!)

  • Madex Posted: Apr.16 at 10:29 pm
..i feel the bulls actually have a good chance of beating the cavs if they still had gordon, salmons and tyrus thomas….but right now i only see them winning as least 2 games..

  • Enigmatic Posted: Apr.16 at 11:01 pm
I say Cavs in 6 but I’m just really happy the Bulls made the playoffs so Rose and Noah and can get some more playoff experience under their belt as well as Gibson getting some for his first season.

  • Omxniyeince Posted: Apr.16 at 11:55 pm
The the baby Bulls D-Rose will upset the Akron Hammer’s Cavs lol

  • Jalepino Sausage Posted: Apr.17 at 3:53 am
Kobesexual awearness is strong on this page :-=)

  • ThatGuy Posted: Apr.17 at 9:13 am
I want to see Rose just dominate the whole series by calling for isos everytime down the court then owning whoevers guarding him

  • jpen Posted: Apr.17 at 10:00 am
just hate seeing lebron and his dance troupe disrespected the bulls earlier in the season. i think that made this bulls team inspired to have revenge on this cavaliers team.

  • WOODY Posted: Apr.17 at 11:28 am
Lebron and his merry men are so irritated with Noah and the Bulls that they’ll show no mercy. Shaq is lighter and really hungry. A dangerous group. And Noah is really ugly.

  • Shawn Posted: Apr.17 at 12:15 pm
Raptors woulda beat the Cavs…Just sayin’

  • Fitz Posted: Apr.17 at 1:15 pm
    noah talks way too much

  • Dacre Posted: Apr.17 at 6:01 pm
…and doesn’t play nearly enough tennis? – Bulls have something instore for the Cavs. Hinrich and Rose win the battle over Delonte West and Mo. Hinrich gets worthy of 2nd team all defensive thisyear. If they can run West and Mo off their 3point spots they will stand a good chance of doing something right – Shaq will need need to battle for 20-10 to have a remote chance of helping out in a series. Brad Miller LOVES the idea of getting amongst it for a 7 game series with the big criole. Varej’ and Noah cancel each other out in a mess of hair and soap-operatic angst. The Coachs are as crap as each other and really, it comes down to LeDance* winning single handely if everything else goes the Bulls way. Cleveland will win 4-2 but it will be an incredible series to watch.

  • Bryan Posted: Apr.17 at 7:06 pm
Cavs will take this easy. Though I would love to see Noah and the Bulls stop all this foolish dancing. Seriously, how big of a douchebag is Lebron James?

  • letsmotor Posted: Apr.17 at 7:07 pm
@ Dacre: are you saying shaq needs to go 20-10 to have a “remote chance” of making an impact. he only had 12 and 5 today, and he clearly had a positive impact for his team. if he plays the entire series like he played today, an upset is extremely unlikely. how great would an upset be though? especially if paired with the thunder beating LAL (which I think is much more likely than the bulls beating the cavs)? think of how mad david stern would be!

  • Dacre Posted: Apr.18 at 9:14 am
@letsmotor – prior to todays game; with the little play Shaq has had for the Cavs this season (only started two games along with Jamison?) I was sure that Shaq would need to put in a LARGE effort (hence the 20-10 measurement) to help this team in a playoff series against the Bulls. His 12 and 5 appeared very big for them. Note though, the 3 turnovers he had? THAT was what I feared would hinder the team. Giving awaay a possession a quarter almost. But hey, I’m very happy to see the ‘Big Upsize’ slimmed down and looking quick out there….
An upset will be had!!! (Orlando AND CLeveland can’t both make it to the NBA finals…).
    O_o

  • jone Posted: Apr.19 at 1:58 am
noah is a bum… he keeps on complaining about KG… about Lebron… that goes to show you how much he knows about basketball… you never make a statement like that… don’t ever ever make LBJ angry… you just put the nail in the bulls coffin.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Apr.19 at 8:08 am
Bulls have talent & play decent defense. I don’t expect them to get swept, but talking isht to the media won’t help them win games. It’ll just be locker room material for Assistant Coach Brown & his team. IF the Bulls still had Gordon & the Cavs were missing one of their starters, (like the Celts series last year) they would have an outside shot at an upset. Maybe.

  • don Posted: Apr.19 at 8:52 am
I think Jay Z said it best: Men LIE. Women LIE. Numbers don’t LIE. Joakim Noah, you need more people.
