Kobe Bryant Says Lakers are ‘Underdogs’

Kobe certainly isn’t above playing the mental games to get his team fired up for the postseason, as SRI reports. He better hope his teammates haven’t found out that some in the media think they’ll sweep OKC: “On what he thinks the identity of the Lakers is heading into the playoffs: ‘Underdogs. That’s what it feels like because we have been playing so inconsistently. You start hearing the rumblings and the chirping about us being beatable and teams wanting to see us in the first round and things like that. You start hearing those things and it kinda puts you into that mindset.”’

Nice try Kobe… he lakers should man up and accept that everybody expects them to just play and at least make it to the finals… You don’t have the best record in the west fot nothing

  • Yesse

Agreed with apeman. Kobe makes Lakers sound like some first round dropout. I would expect them to face Cavs in the finals.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Kobe is either a genius or a noob at this mind game crap. How can the defending champs be considered underdogs? LOL

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Perhaps the only reason they leave Fisher as the Starting PG is so that Kobe can call themselves underdogs. (ie: You have young and fast PG’s, we have Fisher, therefore we are at disadvantage.)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Reason #3896 to hate this b*tch.

  • vtrobot

Beatable? Maybe. Underdogs? I wouldn’t go that far, Mamba. *ssholes? Most definitely.

  • Ricky

    Eboy, jealousy sucks, doesn’t it?

    F*ck you.

  • underdog

Definetely a wrong choice of words. If he meant the Lakers are not the favorites, I agree, though.

  • mytiman

They’re gonna have their hands full against these Thunders fo sho. Kobe needs to become Superman once again to save the Lakers from an upset.

  • rob

Kobe’s taking a page from Phil Jackson’s book. The Lakers are gonna turn on the switch now. Sorry OKC you area bunch of really cool guys with lots of talent and all but you’re gonna get swept.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

    Hate gets weird sometimes.

  • TyMo

The Lakers are going to turn on that Playoff switch, only to realize they haven’t paid their power bill.

  • riggs

can someone smack this dude? cause im all the way in NY

  • thalilbigkahuna

You honestly think Kobe believes he is an underdog? The defending champs vs. a team with virtually no playoff experience? Kobe doesn’t see his team as underdogs. Like it says at the beginning of the post, mind games through the media.

  • LA Huey

Mamba must be trying to channel the ’04 Pistons or ’95 Rockets. We don’t believe you, you need more people.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Co-sign Spaceship Jay. I honestly don’t care if Kobe thinks they’re underdogs or he thinks they’re gonna go undefeated on their way to the trophy, as long as he doesn’t shoot 8 for 37 in the first game.

  • rob

@TyMo that was a good one. You’re wrong though!

  • Jake

Generally when you aren’t the favorites, you are some kind of underdog.I can’t really see any clear cut path to the Finals for any team this year.It seems like everyone is a bit more banged up this year than last, but maybe that’s just me.

  • http://www.twitter.com/BeeBopLive BeeBopLive

Honestly anything can happen in the playoffs I.e. The dallas warriors series so we’ll just have 2 wait and see, and the nba is where “amazing” happens right?

  • Bruno

everyone here thinks or wants OKC to win so what kobe said may be true hahaha

Eboy people like you are the reason I hate commenting on this site. You are seriously the least objective, most irrational person I’ve encountered on a message board. Your hate runs so deep that it leave me shaking my head. Stop being a b*tch, appreciate the guy while he’s playing, and relax.

  • erich

Hey kama I kinda understand EBoy on this one.
Kobe shouldn’t say something nobody, I repeat nobody, that knows basketball could believe.
Because that in my opinion means he thinks we are stupid enough to take such bulls*it for real.

That boy Westbrook is going to dance circles around Old Man Fish, and Durant is going to light Ron-Ron’s @ss up.
OKC is taking their right foot and getting all up in that @ss, Lakers.

Lakers are gonna go to the finals and from there who knows who will win. The team that wants it the most will win.

  • vic21

Afterwards he admitted that LeBron and MJ are way better, and that in his 81 points game the Raptors played GREAT D

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Man. Underdogs are teams who are going up against strong odds. You guys have FIVE All Stars who are playing terribly. You are NOT underdogs. F*ck this.

  • The Philosopher

The Lakers are in trouble.Phil knows it, Kobe knows it, D. Fisher,(with all due respect) knows it. And they’ve been complaining about being tired. I’m not saying They’ll lose, but don’t be suprised if they do.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

is it worth pointing out that Kobe said that they FEEL like underdogs (rather than saying they ARE the underdogs)??

  • http://slamonline.com 95bignate

    i second that lets motor

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Sure, they feel like underdogs because they’re playing inconsistently. Ever wonder WHY they’re playing inconsistently? Because for the bulk of the season, they’ve horribly underutilized their on-paper offensive juggernaut of a frontcourt (Bynum, Gasol, Lamar and Ron), with Kobe taking more shots per game than he’s had in the past 3 seasons, shooting at the worst clip and averaging the most turnovers in that same period. Does it sound like I’m criticizing Kobe? No, I’m criticizing Phil and Kobe and everyone on the squad. By going to Kobe more often than needed, they’ve under-utilized their wealth of offensive talent and entirely marginalized their bench. So how can they use “we’re playing inconsistent” as motivation when they dug themselves into this hole to begin with?

Joel O’s locking this thread down

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

All I know is, the Thunder are getting ready to whoop some West Coast Californian @ss.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

What annoys me and I’m sure is at the heart of the rest of the “Kobe hating” people commenting above is this – the *entitlement* at the heart of Kobe’s words. “You start hearing the rumblings and the chirping about us being beatable and teams wanting to see us in the first round and things like that.” He sounds like the team is on a 15-win streak and is scoffing at the idea of teams even considering the Lakers beatable. Reality check – the Lakers ARE beatable, they lost 12 out of the 27 or so post-ASG games. Last season’s championship counts for squat right now, and so does their early season success.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@melvin ely: Thanks, but it’s been all pointed out before by the numerous commenters here who are able to go beyond “Yehh Kobe is teh best you guys are just haters” and “Noo, get off Kobe’s nuts”, of which this site has quite a bunch, I’m really glad to see.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

The Lakers’ inconsistency – the source of Kobe’s “motivation” – is inexcusably their own doing. Look at this Laker squad. How are they different from last year’s squad, or the one from two years ago? They essentially kept the same supporting cast (Walton, Farmar, Machine, etc.) and added stars to it (Gasol, Artest) while having Bynum improve steadily as an inside presence. People call the Laker squad “top-heavy”, but this is wrong – the only reason their bench is abysmal is because they’ve been wholly underutilized: no bench player outside of Lamar, Farmar and Brown averages more than 8 or 9 mpg. Is their bench that bad? No – in fact, their bench used to be major contributors or even starters in the pre-Gasol days, guys like Farmar and Walton especially. Truth: the Laker bench is deeper than a lot of people give them credit…

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

So as the past 2-3 seasons have gone by, and the Lakers have added upgrade after upgrade to their already competitive team (while giving up essentially NOTHING), you’d think they’d use their depth more, right? No. Instead, this season they have Kobe hoist up lots of shots, play their starters + Lamar heavily, and reduce pretty much everyone else to playing less than 10 mpg. They’ve been struggling of late to get into a rhythm, but how CAN they get into a rhythm when their team, outside of the core 5, has barely played all year? And now that injuries are nagging at their squad, how then do you turn to the reserves and expect them to produce? How can you justify having a more-than-decent bench of role players, and ignore them for the sake of playing all your big names heavy MPG, AND THEN say that “oh, we’re going to use this recent inconsistency as a motivation tool to spur our guys on”?

    @Omnixyience: What up, Kob?

  • Steve Blom

Kobe’s statement is correct! A lot of people consider them to be underdogs. Maybe not against the Thunder, but overall. They haven’t played well down the stretch, that is a fact. If Kobe is fairly healthy, and Andrew Bynum comes back in a fairly healthy status, this team is gonna be tough. They’re playoff tested and they’re the champs. Kobe’s still the best finisher in the game. Gasol is one of the best centers in the game, if not the best. And if Lamar Odom elevates his game, who can knock them off in a 7 game series?
