Kobe Bryant to Play in World Championships?

Health-permitting, it looks like Jerry Colangelo will have one less megastar to yell at this summer. ESPN caught up with Kobe to discuss the possibility of playing for Team USA this summer: “The three leading scorers on USA Basketball’s 2008 gold-medal winning team at the Olympics in Beijing were separated by a mere eight points. The guy who was first, Dwyane Wade, has a divorce case that might preclude him from playing in the world championships this summer in Turkey. The second-leading scorer, LeBron James, told the Associated Press that the likelihood of him renewing his commitment to the U.S. national team this summer as ‘very, very shady right now,’ and added, ‘I’m probably not playing.’ The third-leading scorer, Kobe Bryant, would not commit either way Thursday and would not try to persuade Wade or James to reconsider their plans. ‘They’re grown men, they make their own decisions,’ Bryant said at the Los Angeles Lakers shootaround in preparation for a game against the Denver Nuggets. ‘At the end of the day, they have to listen to what their bodies are telling them and make that call. It’s something I won’t talk to them about.’ Bryant said he is playing “as far as I know,” but added that the decision would hinge on his health. ‘Obviously I have a couple health issues, one being a cracked finger,’ Bryant said. ‘But, we’ll see how it goes.”‘

the crowd wants to see action though…

Kobe actually likes to play basketball, i’m sure he’ll play. If kobe could play during his eagle county trial, dwade should beable to play too.

^ Turkey is a lot further than Denver

  • Rob

Kobe said it, they are grown men and they make their own decisions.

I might not like him, but I respect him!

Without Wade and Melo being leading scorers, he’ll be completely useless.

  • JD

the Worlds just got real interesting

  • Michael Scorn

@UnRel- Wade better add his lawyer to his fave 5 then.

  • J-Ro

They still have alotta good players though….

Durant will be there for sure, so Melo’s spot is covered. They need a penetrating guard in the style of Wade, I think maybe Tareke Evans? He is in the same mold. I think a back court of Evans, KD and Kobe is great, maybe less talented than wade, kobe, melo and Lebron, but definitely more balanced and more dangerous for the international stage. Plus kobe can get back to leading these puppies, something he had to tone down with wade, lebron and melo in the mix.

not to knock on the other guys, but even the Kobe haters have to admit that you can only like Kobe for wanting to play this summer. Of all the Team USA players I would really understand it if Kobe wouldn’t play. Have you seen his fingers?! Anyway, I hope they’ll show something in The Netherlands of the world championships. It used to be on Eurosport, but they didn’t show anything in 2006.

It won’t be a big deal if who plays or don’t play this summer. If USA win the gold.

yeah, LeBrons about as reliable to make a dunk comp, as he is to represent in the world championships…

  • Michael Scorn

all they need is CP3. He’s the MVP.

  • Michael Scorn

Is it too late for Chris Kaman to swith back to being an American.

Michael Scorn – two stupid comments in the same thread. Deron Williams carried that team from the PG slot at the Olympics, not CP3. Watch the games.

  • Michael Scorn

    It was a joke!

Can’t you guys tell by his name he’s joking? Haven’t any of you seen The Office?

Well, we need some new faces anyway. Not saying Kobe wouldn’t be a hit, but having Derrick Rose or Kevin Durant won’t be too bad.

    Thank you Teddy

    Durant is ready.

In my humble opinion, Kobe plays. He’s the type who is playing for his legacy. He’s competing against the greats who’s played the game, and I think he’s trying to do as much as possible to put himself in the conversation of who’s the greatest of all times. Even though it’s Magic Johnson.

  • Harlem_World

Evans, KD and Kobe is more dangerous than Wade, Lebron and Kobe on the international stage? Really?…You sure you haven’t been sipping on something?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

“Even though it’s Magic Johnson.” Nope, it’s Wilt Chamberlain, Phil.

    hursty is lame

  • black pinoy

im not letting rose join.. not until he learns to shoot.. on second thought if wades not playing im putting him in.. the team someone who can break defenders one on one..but i prefer evans and deron and cp3 than rose simply because they can shoot better than him… and durants definetly a go… lebrons a p**sy.. he looks out only for himself.. whatever happened to playing for your country is the greatest honor spiel.. thats why ill give kobe more respect anyday

    SPAIN!!

Kevin Durant would do unspeakable things in international play.I don’t think it would be beyond him to score 30 a game on that team which is saying a lot considering his teammates.
