Paul Pierce: It’s Championship or Bust

Despite overwhelming skepticism from anyone outside the Celtics’ organization, Paul has one goal for his team this postseason. Whether or not it’s realistic, remains to be seen. From the Boston Herald: “A championship, man,’ Pierce said. ‘I mean, that’s what we were saying in the preseason. We want to be the champs. That’s the minimum level. I don’t care what our record is. I don’t care how we’ve played. Our minimum level is winning the championship. That’s been our goal since we brought the team together, and that’s not changed.’ But is it realistic? ‘Yeah,’ Pierce said. ‘Without question. Look, there’s no way we can get around the fact that we lost to some bad teams, but we beat some good teams. And at the end of the day, we just have to beat four teams to win it all. We have a chance to do that. It’s going to be 0-0 after Wednesday night. It’s been tough for us. But you can look at everything in different ways. There’s pros and cons, if you want to really look at it. We know we’re not going to have homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs, but at the same time we’ve been one of the best road teams in all of basketball.’ The Celtics also have been the best at rationalizing their transgressions, and this is no time to stop. ‘The thing about it is that all these records, these win-loss records, all go out the window once the playoffs start,’ Pierce said. “We’ve all got a new chance. It’s refreshing. It’s a whole other season. You’ve seen teams that have the best record in the NBA, and they go to the playoffs and don’t win. The way I look at it is that hopefully we’ll play better these last couple of games and then get a new focus about everything. We have to focus and sustain it.”’

Hahaha. It’s funny how he’s a free agent this year and so is Allen. We’ll see where they end up.

Yep, they’ll be a bust. However, they do have the ability to beat any team – even the Cavs/Magic if healthy. Their regular season record does not tell the story of how good they really are, it more so tells the story of how old they are.

He has an option for next year at around 20 mil and I dont think he’ll opt out as no other team will give him that. This team lost the fire a while ago. I get sick of watching Pierce jack up bad shots, commit turnovers and then not even caring to get back on D. Least we have Rondo and some cap room to look forward to in 2012.

He should be thinking about a first round matchup with the Bobcats rather than a ring. The only rings the Celtics are going to see in June are onion rings they order as a side on the senior special at Luby’s.

yeah, this is going to be like just before the ’08 finals. c’s don’t stand a chance!!!! keep underestimating. we’ll see what happens. yes, the odds might not be totally in their favor, but you all think the C’s winning it all is totally unrealistic? OK. things don’t always go down as they’re supposed to. i would also like to see a BOS/CHI series again this year because it will give the C’s a good chance for a sweep and allow the old men some rest. i would except that everyone on the C’s will be giving it all they have as this is definitely the last shot with this team.

If the starters are healthy they can hang with anyone. But man that bench is weak. I bet the Celts would take 2008 James Posey instead of Rasheed Wallace’s corpse right now.

  • TyMo

    I also vote “bust”

  • Lazarus

the celts have put all these expectations and pressures on themselves. none of the fans over hyping em.

    i still have faith!

@ NUPE, no the Celtics don’t have the potential to beat anyone. Celtics record vs. ATL this season is 0-4 & we’d love to beat them again. Another fail for the Celtics

  • ggdg

the c’s can make it. Nobody expected the orlando magic in the finals last year.

  • Sparty’s Law

    Second-Round Knockout . . . bust.

where does he say “Championship or bust”? What did you want him to say – “Paul, what are your goals for the postseason?” “well gee, we just want to play good basketball and have a nice time. it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part that counts”

  • vtrobot

@ Royal: So you think that, because of the regular season record, the C’s would have 0% of beating the Hawks and the Hawks would have 100% certainty of winning the series? The Hawks had the C’s number all season, but I wouldn’t put that much stock in what happened during the regular season games. It will be interesting and I’d love to see a C’s/Hawks battle because I don’t think it might go the distance again.

    Co-sign, second round, then KO.

@Underdog, you, sir, are so closing to “FAIL”ing. im rooting against the celtics cause they’re a bunch of douchebags, especially their starters from one to five are all assholes who think they’re better than they actually are. maybe not Jesus but the rest are definitely on that level. but its hard to count them out when it comes to playoff time and honestly, PP is SUPPOSED to say what he said and so should most teams in the NBA who have any self-esteem.

    Shout out to Kevin Gamble.

i think they could win the title. it all depends on kg, if he posts up and scores, draws doubleteams, he was their leading scorer in the playoffs the year they won the title and averaged 20ppg the whole year, wth a huge 26 in the clincher vs la…… he’s averaging 13ppg this year and its mostly on udonis haslem-esque jumpshots.

KG steps up and plays like KG and they can win it, he did that when they beat the cavs the other night (and he only shot 5-14 that game, but the point is he played inside and led the team with energy, was their focal point in the post)

  • liam

1 vs 8 cavs win 4-0, celts vs bucks 4/5 celts win 4-0, magic vs bobcats magic win 4-1, heat vs hawks heat win 4-2………. 2nd round celtics beat cavs 4-2 and magic beat heat 4-2, eastern finals celtics beat magic 4-3
