Report: Tyreke Evans to be Named R.O.Y.

Sactown Royalty, the great Kings blog, is reporting that ‘Reke will officially be named to League’s top rookie this week: “Tyreke Evans will be named the NBA’s 2009-10 Rookie of the Year later this week, Sactown Royalty has learned. The announcement is expected Thursday or Friday. The Kings nor the NBA have announced Evans’s victory, and the team has not yet alerted the media of a press conference later this week. Evans, of course, became the first rookie since LeBron James to average 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. He was a major factor in the Kings improved from 17 wins in 2008-09 to 25 wins this season. He started every game he played, and lead all rookies in points per game (20.1), minutes per game (37.2) and Win Shares (5.4). He finished second in assists per game (5.8, behind Stephen Curry’s 5.9), fifth in rebounds per game (5.3, behind big men Taj Gibson, DeJuan Blair, Jonas Jerebko and Serge Ibaka), second in steals per game (1.5, behind Curry) and second in PER (18.2, behind Rodrigue Beaubois’s 18.5).”

    Oh, this is a surprise..

props to tyreke though, but I am Team Brandon.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Although we all knew he was going to take it, I kind of wish this would be the year for Co-ROYs.

  • Drew

Co-ROYs would’ve been nice. Wasn’t the last co-ROYs Grant Hill and Jason Kidd?

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Whoot WOOT! Props to the young gun for gettin’ it done. Next year I want WINS though! You here me ‘reke!

  • Jas

No, Steve Francis and Elton Brand were the last to share rookie honors.

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

Stephan Curry is better now. But I expect Tyreke to grow a left hand so he can finally go left. I swear sometimes it was like he was playing with his left arm in a sling or something.

  • robert stewart

Why did you mention almost every rookie ACCEPT Jennings in this article? Jennings team is currently tied 2-2 with ATL even though Bogut is out. I defenitley am more impressed by B.J.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

@robert stewart: the word you are looking for is EXCEPT

  • Hussman25

Congrats Reke! “Tha City” is proud!

  • Robb

There was only one rookie playing at both ends of the floor and having historical stats this year, so this is a no contest. Congrats ‘Reke!

  • BostonBaller

Congrats to the young fella and the rest of his rookie class for playing some really good ball.

  • Aaron

Exactly. I don’t see why everyone expects another ROY. This guy is it. Consistency prevails.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Danny Green got robbed

  • kudos

“and the winner is from one of the top 3 worst teams in the L is…..” Who cares, his team sucks. Tyreke is the de facto ball hog on sacramento. And he hasn’t done anything wit it.

  • http://slamonline doom

what ever happened to Blake Griffin..

  • J-Ro

Why get mad over who wins this award? In case u guys don’t remember some of the all time greats didn’t win this award either.

  • MF

The league should take into account toughness and give to D Blair for playn with no ACLs in both his knees. Thats TOUGH

  • commonsense

Lebron won rookie of the year over Carmelo. Where was the playoff argument then?

  • p.ivyy

    #b0000 im team BJ3 ; hes thee ONLY r00kiee thts inn’ the Play0ffs :-P

  • doyouwantmore

Can’t even say how it feels to have good news coming out of Sacramento again.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

I don’t really know what p.ivyy is saying but if he’s saying that Jennings is the only rookie in the playoffs he clearly doesn’t watch basketball. Guess what? Taj Gibson, DeJuan Blair, Serge Ibaka, Wesley Matthews and Rodrigue Beaubois are all in the playoffs too.

  • Big Mike

Y’all are juicing Tyreke’s joint but the best rookie this year was Steph Curry. The boy has mad skills and some of his numbers are much more mind-boggling than Evans’. Curry won Rookie of the Month 3 out of the last 4 months – no ROTY has won the award since it was started in 2006 without winning ROTM at least 3 times. Evans won the award twice early in the season, then really tapered off. Curry’s last game alone should win it for him: 13-25 from the field, 12-12 from line, 42 pts., 9 rebounds and 8 assists in a win at Portland. The only other rookie to post those numbers was Oscar Robertson, whose all-around numbers Curry continues to duplicate or better. Curry had triple the amount of big games that Evans had and also was a deft steals man with 1.9 per game. Evans is going to be a solid pro, as will Jennings, but Curry is clearly the best of all.

  • Tyler

Good for Tyreke, he deserved it. Jennings is good and so is Curry. But Curry is more a product of the system, Reke is by far better then Jennings and Curry. It’s not debatable at all.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Tyreke played on a scrub team, just like Lebron that year, so who cares about 20 5 and 5 when your team sucks. I would take Curry over Tyreke as rookie of the year. If Tyreke played with monta, he would not have those numbers. Ellis and Maggette think they are the go to guys on GS and are always taking bad shots. Tyreke could do whatever he wants, he was the man from day one. You put Curry on Sacto and he does the same thing. You put non shooting Tyreke on GS he does not have Curry big game and numbers, because he can’t shoot. Jennings played great, just look at his game now, the shooting percentage doesn’t matter to me, if your team is still winning and by his team going to the playoffs, when year before they didn’t he should have got nod, because he was balling before Salmons. CURRY IS REAL ROY

  • Naim Reed

Congrats to tyreke, but booo the NBA. You advertise Team and vote for individual. The Bucks didnt play until BJennings showed them that they can actually beat the Hawks. Thats what rookie of the year should be about. All leading candidates were on horrible teams, only one rookie elevated his team to the playoffs. You went co-MVP for the rookie game(c’mon), and now this. Obvious who the NBA chose from the jump stats are meaningless if they dont amount to wins. If the Bucks somehow make it beyond the first round shame on you NBA, shame!!!!!

  • Naim Reed

And if Im not mistaken Lebron almost made the playoffs that year. His presence had an impact on the team. They voted for stats versus results. They voted for 5pts and 2rbs more and BJennings is on a playoff team in large part to his play. Bogut gave up on his career before brandon and he knows it. Redd, injured at the beginning of the season. enter John Salmons, any reason not to mention Jennings. Because he represent something the NBA didnt like from draft day. All BJennings has done all year is silence the critics.

  • BostonBaller

The above is why it’s so hard to know who’s the best in many categories…If you get a majority of your teams shots then your scoring should be up there (Durant, Wade etc) If your team has a lot of scoring options then your assists should be up there (Nash, Rondo, Kidd), If your team either misses a lot of shots or shoots a lot of 3′s your rebounds may be up there too (Howard, D. Lee etc). Reke, Curry & Jennings all played well as did Taj Gibson, D. Blair, D. Collison etc etc. Out of the Big 3 rookies only Jennings is playing in the 2nd season.

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

Wow, The Seed at it again. Laughing at Tyreke’s team record and then raving about Curry who is on a team with THE SAME RECORD AS SACREMENTO

  • fut.

O call for the triple-co-rookie of the year.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

Darren Collison – ROY (I normally back BJennings here)…

  • dino

I would like to see a triple ROY.
    They all did something unique.
Jennings scored 55 and had a nice year but he hit the wall, hard!
Evans put up some nice numbers, but the Kings had no-one else to go to + he played the point so he had the ball in his hands most of the game.Steph he took a while until he started playing well and he finished the season stronger than anyone, but he plays under Nellie’s system and without monta for a while so his numbers a little inflated. But Evans deserves it for going out everynight and putting up at least 20 5 & 5 even if his team is SH*T

  • Marco

Man if I was wrong on bj this summer…I thought that he was a bust even before the season started, based on what I saw in rome. You were right Ryne Nelson

  • JoeMaMa

@Dacre – If he has put up those crazy numbers for another 2 months, I’d agree. Thornton and Collison saved Hornets fans from an atrocious season.
What a guard-heavy rookie team! Evans, Jennings, Curry, Collison, Thornton. An infusion of exciting guard play has RumpleSternskin waving his sceptre in glee.

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

By stats it’s Reke, by team success, it’s Jennings. Not sure where Curry even fits into this argument with all personal bias put aside.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Curry fits in as the only rookie to do what rookie’s are supposed to do throughout a season. Get better every day, week, month. The reason I personally would not have given the award to Tyreke is because dude plays with Tunnel Vision…His teammates don’t seem to (and some openly) enjoy playing with him. While curry went from a paltry 12ish and 4ish a game to 20 6 6 for the last month or so. Improving steadily every month. And he too was the only rookie to ever do something, shoot over 45% from the field, 85% from the ft line, and & 40% from the 3pt line. And he was top 10 in total assists and steals. while being 3rd in steals per game.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    Triple ROY sounds about right.

  • KoolaidkiD

It’s good to see that the most deserving Rookie won the ROY. If Tyreke got shafted for the ROY Award, then you would know for sure that the NBA is fixed. At least with Tyreke winning, it shows that there is still hope in the NBA.

Curry & Jennings are great runner-ups too. Those 3 kids can all ball. Actually, this last rookie class was loaded with ballers. There will be at least 10 rookies from this class that will all be extremely valuable to their chosen teams.

  • KoolaidkiD

And just for the Record, there isn’t ONE Player on the Kings that doesn’t like playing with Tyreke. His entire Team, and City absolutely love his personality and play on the court.

He’s a quiet assassin. Never talks smack, cause he doesn’t need to; his basketball skills speak for themselves. He’s by far the most level-headed even-keel rookie this year.

Dude is just beast. It doesn’t even matter that all you Bucks and Warriors fans don’t think he deserves the Award, because every Player, Coach & GM in the League has his respect. He was the only Rookie to play this year who didn’t play like a Rookie.

Only Kobe, Lebron & Reke averaged 20-5-5 this season. Forget Rookies who averaged that. Those are the only 3 players to average that this season. And Lebron was 2nd only to Tyreke in getting to the rim and scoring unassisted. Yes, this year, Tyreke was the most efficient player at the rim.

Get over it homers. The best player won the ROY award.

  • damon

Evans roy no doubt, he got the stats, and the poise to dominate games, he was the only rookie to hit couple of game winners, defenses were adjusted To key on evans. Hands down roy.

  • jhunna

The only rookie to hit 2 game winners and the only rookie to win a game with defense! Some of u guys act like hes a ball hog and all this mess, have you even watched him? This guy passes as much as he shoots. He just doesn’t have shooters on a crappy team, it aint his fault he got drafted before other guards like BJ. He’s the only reason they got the wins they did if he wasn’t there then the kings would of been like the nets this year aha

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Evans literally had teammates saying he was a ball hog.
