Shawn Marion: ‘I Don’t See No Fat Lady’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Heading into halftime last night in San Antonio, the Dallas Mavericks appeared to be on the verge of tying up the series with the Spurs. Tim Duncan (with no baskets at that point) looked older than the 34 years he had just reached, and the 7th seed Spurs did not look like a team ready to take a commanding lead.

And then the second half started.

Things quickly unraveled for Dallas, and now they face an almost insurmountable 3-1 hole as they head back home. According to Shawn Marion, though, things aren’t as bleak as they may seem.

He tells ESPN that — despite what history indicates — the Mavs have a good shot at coming back in this series:

Only eight teams in NBA history, out of the 189 that have tried, have managed to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven playoff series. “I’ve been in this situation. It can be done. … I don’t see no fat lady,” Marion said after the Mavericks’ 92-89 loss to the Spurs in Game 4 on Sunday night.

Marion played on one of those eight teams to overturn a 3-1 deficit when he helped the Phoenix Suns beat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games in the first round of the 2006 playoffs.

Marion was everywhere in the first half of Game 4, grabbing loose balls, rebounds and never giving the Spurs a moment to relax. But he shrank along with the rest of the Mavs when the chips were put on the table. And now he’s asking the world — and his team — to believe they still have a shot.

Game 5 will present the Mavs’ first opportunity to change the skeptics’ minds.

Dallas was @ the other hand of the stick during the 2006 NBA finals, so they should know better than any other team how to change the momentum!

“I don’t see no fat lady” actually means “I do see a fat lady” :o

  • Cheryl Posted: Apr.26 at 12:36 pm
yeah and Santa Claus lives at the North Pole.

  • Big Mel Posted: Apr.26 at 12:53 pm
He didn’t shrink Dallas is just on the take sitting him on the bench for damn near the whole half again.

  • Jason Posted: Apr.26 at 1:05 pm
Does that mean he does see a fat lady?

Shawn Marion ranks very highly on the list of professional athletes whom I would most like to b*tch slap.

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Apr.26 at 3:35 pm
I don’t recall needing to see a fat lady to hear her sing. Just saying.

  • LA Huey Posted: Apr.26 at 4:48 pm
Don’t worry, those ex-Wizards and the other Mavs can help you deal with the combination of losing in the first round and losing to a significantly lower seed.

  • Bruno Posted: Apr.26 at 4:55 pm
and I don’t see this spurs playoff’s squad losing 3 games in a row

  • henry Posted: Apr.26 at 5:21 pm
hate the mavs, but if any team can, theyre talented enough, just not mentally tough enough as always

  • Flud Posted: Apr.26 at 5:49 pm
Mark Cuban is a fat lady

  • Dacre Posted: Apr.26 at 6:05 pm
    I don’t see no broken-down old shooting technique…

  • ClydeSays Posted: Apr.26 at 6:29 pm
I see an upset of a team that thought they were going to be in the Finals this year. Sorry Mark “Fat Lady” Cuban. You can burn a pile of money in memory of this season. Funny that everyone was calling the Celts ‘old’ when the Mavs actually have the elderly line up.

Much like players are fined for substance abuse, Marion should be fined for abuse of the English language.

06 suns over fakers reminds me of tim thomas and all those clutch shots. Remember, that was the team without amare.

  • LilKDub503 Posted: Apr.26 at 8:31 pm
As a Spurs fan, I can’t hear the fat lady either, but she is definitely tuning up. But we need to take no prisoners and shut it down in Game 5, because who knows if they win Game 5, then eke out one in Game 6 back in San Antone. Then comes a real dilemma. One game is one game, and it’s all square. I am really worried, but I think it ends in Game 5.

  • KoBynum716 Posted: Apr.26 at 9:40 pm
@LilKDub: The spurs are playing their usual playoff basketball (come on, nobody was fooled by their 7th seed), but you’re right, Dallas is pretty stacked and they could steal one in SA. But to be honest, they have too much experience. I had Dallas going to the WCF against LA, but now I’ll say whoever wins this series is headed there.

  • Ronald Posted: Apr.26 at 9:57 pm
@Sparty: He might sound like an ass through the media but Marion is actually a very nice and approachable guy. My friend (who isn’t a basketball fan) actually went up to him during the 2002 Olympics and asked him whether he was a basketball player. He politely introduced himself as a member of the USA basketball team and signed for autographs and posed for picture. In most situations the divas of the NBA would have found it insulting that someone didn’t recognize them.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Apr.26 at 10:35 pm
Sparty, is there something you really want to have said? Marion’s “abuse of the English language”…? Sounds like you went to private school and the only minorities you’ve ever seen are NBA players.
It’s called ebonics, idiot. Colloquial speech; ever heard of it?

  • DLinkWit Posted: Apr.26 at 11:28 pm
A Colloquial is relaxed speech. You’re for you are. It’s not really double negatives.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Apr.26 at 11:47 pm
You obviously never heard of no Southerners then.

  • Jose Posted: Apr.27 at 12:12 am
Marion is obviously blind then. Spurs in 6

  • hooaah Posted: Apr.27 at 12:26 am
take a couple steps outside your house shawn.. then tell me what you see.

  • Alpha-bet Posted: Apr.27 at 12:41 am
The Spurs turned on that battle tested veteran intensity and punched Dallas in the mouth, I dont think this Mavs team got the character to bounce back from that..

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Apr.27 at 4:08 am
You know what the Mavs need? The King and The Duck.
But….but even then. We got us Wesley and Woody. And thus, we win.

  • TheTruth Posted: Apr.27 at 4:48 am
Lol it would have been a sweep if crybaby dirk and his band of b**ches didn’t get every call in game 1!

  • letsmotor Posted: Apr.27 at 8:32 am
can’t say i’m surprised by the mavs’ collapse. strangely, i also wouldn’t have been surprised if they ended up western conf champs. this is a team that went on a 13 game win streak, but then again, they’ve also lost games by 32, 33, and 34.
