Andrew Bynum Opts to Delay Knee Surgery

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Another Lakers Playoff run, another Andrew Bynum injury with major implications. In Game 6 of the Thunder series, Bynum re-aggravated what the team is calling a “small tear” in the lateral meniscus of his right knee (an injury he originally suffered during last year’s NBA Finals).

Bynum, who posted eight points and ten boards in the series opening win against Utah yesterday, is opting to put off surgery until the offseason, as he attempts to help the Lakers win back-to-back titles.

Considering that in his five-year career, Bynum has suffered knee injuries in three of them, some can’t help but wonder if playing through the pain is the right call from the injury-prone big fella:

Teammates and the front-office are fully in support of his choice. Yahoo! reports:

Considering how bad the other knee injuries were, Bynum actually considered this a breath of fresh air. “I’ve had so many,” Bynum said. “The first one is the worst one. The second one it’s like, are you serious? The third one, I’m used to it. You just go through it.”

Said Kupchak: “Apparently, it’s something he can play with. I know he has some discomfort. But this is his fifth season and he’s a gamer. He understands that this is the time of year where you play. Now, my understanding is the injury is such that he has some discomfort he can play on. And then it gets to the point where you have too much discomfort, you don’t play. So we’re not that concerned about it developing into something bigger than it is today. We’re just hoping that game to game he can continue to make a contribution. I thought he did today.”

While Kobe Bryant(notes) used to be hard on Bynum for not quickly reaching his potential, he was proud of him Sunday for his display of toughness. “He is doing a great job,” Bryant said. “He’s playing through an injury. Sometimes you have to do that. I think it shows maturity for the young player to start figuring out how to play around that and do different things to be effective despite the injury. That’s how you grow.”

Andrew Bynum and the team seem to believe the injury isn’t serious enough to shut it down and get surgery immediately, and he’ll try to gut it out for as long as possible. It’ll be interesting to see at what level he can play the rest of the way, and ultimately, how healthy he can be in the future.

its gonna come back to haunt him.

  • peter

riggs, not if they win the title…then he can be an injured up big man the rest of his career with 2 titles…more than most

  • Coach Walt

If the Lakers win games 1,2, and 3…if I’m Phil I sit him out of game 4 in Utah, and see if we can win without him, if not he’s a tad more rested for Game 5.

    Macho-ism move I guess…

I mean, if The King is gonna tough out a dislocated elbow and still put up triple doubles, then Bynum can grab about 10 boards with a sore knee.

Great to see that some guys are feeling the situation, making irrational choices, instead of thinking long-term and career wise. That makes a game more exciting ;)

He’ll be sitting when the Lakers play the Suns in the WCF, won’t be able to keep up with that style…

Brandon Roy is setting the new standard on toughness.

All we need is 10-15pts and 10rebs per game in the playoffs from ya big fella! Let’s get that ring, then you can rest up. Shi* if KB can play through a number of little nagging injuries a 20 something year old can! Back to Back baby…

The Lakers should have traded him when they had the chance. Not that i’m complaining….

  • Coach Walt

Scorn…you are crazy if you think Lebron has anything wrong with his elbow..he has to go along with it b/c in actuality he was slighting the Bulls in a close game by shooting the ball with his left hand…media and brain washed fans cant figure the obvious sometimes..

Maybe Bynum should tune into RaptorsTV right now. It’s a replay of the Pacers-Nets Game 5 Double-OT game from 2002. Bynum could see how good Jermaine O’Neal used to be. Before he tried gutting out a bunch of games on a bad knee. Then Bynum can watch the Celtics-Heat series from this year, and see how much fun JO is having playing on one leg now. Rest up and heal young fella. Kobe might give you the stink eye this year, but if you’re healthy and in your prime in 3 or 4 years, and still helping Kobe win rings, I’m sure he’ll forgive you. Or r**e you.

Speak on it Scorn…My thing is hey if your not a little banged up after playing or while playing in 82 games, plus the playoffs something wrong. Can’t imagine going hard for a 100+ games and not dealing with some sort of injury. Just can’t stand these clowns faking an injury i.e. Paul Pierce in the playoffs a few years back getting carted off in a f***in wheelchair, cmon’ son..getdaf***outtaherewitdatbullshi*

@Michael Scorn – Are you kidding me? Bron has a dislocated shoulder??? He has an elbow strain and elbow bruise. He compares it to like when you hit your funny bone. Don’t get your facts twisted and make Bron’s injury an injury..cuz it’s not.

  • ripslam

LeBron’s elbow isn’t fricking dislocated, he just bumped it and acted like a baby.

  • KB24

LeBron is such a B*TCH, he plays up his own injuries when it isn’t even serious, he knows he is 100%, yet he acts like he is 60% so people can say, look LeBron is dropping triple doubles at 60%, he is the best ever, GTFOH, LEBRON IS A PIECE OF SH*T

  • Marco

Scorn people don’t understand your poetry. keep up with this leftbron sarcasm, it’s so much funny

New nickname for Bynum: “The Big Questionable”.

  • Jorge

Lebron is pulling a “Pierce” on us with his injured arm and Bynum is being “Bynum”, a little baby with a man’s body.
I give Bynum this playoff run to win a title, if he doesn’t, he’s done. And by done I mean, he will become another Odom or even a Jermaine Oneal….bunch of mediocre players.

  • Robb

Lebron’s injury is as real as any of his championship rings

  • NBA kid

    lol @ robb

  • Mitya

I just can’t believe you haters! You could definitely tell his arm was bothering him if you watched that game – at one point he missed about 5 straight lay-ups and baby hooks, and on the break he didn’t go for the usual one-handed hammer, just literally throwing it down with two hands instead. I’m not saying he’s a hero for that or anything, but certainly no reason to call him a b.tch.
I’m not the biggest Lebron fan either, but it would take a miracle for the Cavs not to win it all this year.

  • Jorge

After Garnett talks s***t,Rondo faikes one of those behind the back passes, Pierce believes he’s the best shooter in C’s history, Rasheed gets a technical….after all of that, we can ask Perkins to be himself and just elbow Lebron on his arm to see if it hurts that much…All I am asking is for everyone to be themselves!!!!that’s all I ask.

U guys ride lebron so tough I forgot what the article was about by the time I read the comments. What hasn’t been said is bynum has the type of game where he doesn’t have to be ocerly athletic. He has a decent left hand not nearly as effective as pau but solid. He has very good footwork and a soft touch. He can play thru this and be effective and that’s impressive for a young player.

  • bill breedley

bynum should be rested after game 2. lakers can handle the jazz and who they end up playing in the WCF. they need him healthy in the finals against the likes of howard and perkins
