Cavs/Celtics Game 5 Live Blog

Can Rondo be stopped?

by Rodger Bohn / @rodgerbohn

What’s going on guys? Checking in here from the Q on a dark and gloomy day here in Cleveland. Problems with the tracks here in Cleveland delayed my arrival a few minutes, but I’ve finally made it here for the game.

The major question is: Who can stop Rajon Rondo? LBJ has thrown it out there that he”ll take a stab, but it may take more than the King to slow this walking trip-dip machine.

Here are my thoughts on the game, less the expletives I may have had for the RTA:

-Boston has done a nice job of slowing.  Any time that you can keep the king to within single digits through a quarter and a half of any game, at any point, you’re doing your thing on D.

-The C’s have done a great job of establishing Paul Pierce early on, despite the fact that he’s been struggling all series.  When you have a guy like that who can create his own shot in so many ways, you have to continue feeding him…

-The Cavs still continue to play KG with single coverage.  Granted he’s on the end of his illustrious run, but doesn’t the fact that he can give you 20 every night at least deserve showing a double team every now and then?

-I’m no expert, but seriously….Jamison cannot guard KG one on one.  Da Kid has nearly 6 inches and wayyy more athleticism.  Please, give me a dig down from now and then!

-I don’t understand why it’s acceptable to take the train in Chicago and New York, yet not Cleveland?  A friend of mine was busting my chops for this over on Facebook, but I would much rather relax on the train than wait a half hour to get out of a parking lot.  However, that mindset backfired on me today.

-Cleveland is doing a great job of creating open looks for Mo Williams, since he showed that he couldn’t create his own over the last few games.  Most forget that he was viewed as a combo guard back in high school and college, not a pure creator.

-How about the Houdini act by Rajon Rondo?  For a guy that completely dominated the series, he’s yet to make any sort of impact thus far.  Scoreless, 1 rebound, and 1 assist?

-Varejao doing everything that doesn’t show up in the box.  While his one on one defense hasn’t been outstanding, he’s playing great help side D, getting all the 50/50 balls, and doing all of the little things that help a team to win.  He’s still not a consistent starting PF in the league (unless he’s playing with a dominant center) in my eyes, but is surely an elite glue guy.

-How about the two guys that are killing the Cavs in the second, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are older (67) than their jersey numbers combined (54).

-The last little flurry that the Cavs went on, combined with the big stop that they had to  end the 2nd seems like it may have given them a bit of momentum going into the half.

- 50 to44 Boston at the half.  Time to go grab my usual pair of Diet Pepsi’s!

-While I was en route to the media room, saw a dude get worked by his girl in the VIP Patron Lounge as I was passing by.  She def drilled him with a 3 piece combo, then the legendary purse hit!  Needless to say, she was walking away in handcuffs…

-Ray Allen is looking like he’s back at UCONN battling it out with Allen Iverson, Kerry Kittles, and John Wallace for Big East Player of The Year…

-Joey Crawford surely seems to have it out for LeBron.  Making some calls that could surely go either way, but going against the MVP each time.

-Boo birds must have laid their eggs in Cleveland, because they’re hatching yet again at this time for game 5.  There have been some questionable calls, but it could be said that the Cavs have been just as disappointing (if not more) than the Hawks so far in the 2nd round.

-Cleveland surely needs to cut this to 10 by the end of the 3rd if they hope to have a chance. The Celtics decided that it’s Rondo’s turn to take over, whether it be with the rock in his hands or off of the ball.

-I hate to say it being from Cleveland, but crowd showing yet again why they’re very much fairweather fans towards the Cavs.  I’d be willing to bet that less than 1/4 of the people here tonight were at a single Cavs game the year before they got LeBron.

-That Rajon Rondo 3 just about took the life out of the Cleveland crow, who has been watching a team settle for nothing but jumpers over the last three minutes.

- 80 to 63 Boston at the end of 3.

-Getting tweets from Cleveland fans here asking if I can do something.  Nothing I can do, given the fact that the team can’t hit an outside jumper, get to the rim, or defend the post.

-Things getting ugly here in Cleveland.  A 24 point lead with 9 minutes to go only adds fuel to the fire in regards to LeBron’s decision in the off-season.  Despite the fact that ownership has showed ultimate loyalty and commitment, you have to wonder about the future of an aging team with an abysmal playoff performance such as this.

- Got a text from a basketball friend mentioning how bad the Cavs’ body language looks, namely LeBron.  You can’t tell too much from the stands, but based on what this guy does for a living, I’m willing to take his word on how bad it looks.

- Big Baby is straight giving it to the Cavs in the second half.  Rondo’s ability to read the pick and roll and draw the defense completely frees him up for open jumpers and/or lay-ups.

- And those “die-hard” fans I was referring to before have left the building with half a quarter left…

- I’m still completely fathomed as to why the most unstoppable penetrator in the league continues to settle for contested J after contested J.

-Cavs fans give it up for J.J. Hickson, who comes in for his first minutes of the game, commits a foul, and is immediately yanked.

- Ray Allen is continuing to think he’s in Storrs.  Guy is unstoppable tonight.

-2 minutes to go and less than 5,000 people here at the Q. Boston up 30!

- When Shelden Parker, err I mean Williams, is getting buckets on you, you officially know things are bad.

-120 to 88 Boston, FINAL.

Player of The Game: Paul Pierce. The Truth sang “Don’t Call It A Comeback,” and re-established himself as the go-to one on one presence for the Celtics. The Cali native scored from beyond the arc and from on the blocks, read double teams well, and played nice D on the perimeter. For Cleveland’s sake, let’s hope that Pierce doesn’t reinvigorate himself like this for the remainder of the series.

-Alright guys, I’m out.  One of our other SLAMonline bloggers will give you the dish for game 6.  I’ll see you guys for game 7, hopefully!

my fault, riggs, i meant that i expect them to close it out at home in game 6.

  • riggs

if bron had scored 30 points they still wouldve lost.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

whew. where do i start. well just to answer Myles. i will still be a fan of both Lebron and the Cavs, whether they go separate ways or not. and guys what i’m going to say is NOT AN EXCUSE:

seriously i’ve been blinding myself of this fact up to now. LeBron up to this point NEVER had a luxury of another superstar who can score when he’s throwing sh*t inside the court. NEVER he had a team that will blowout great teams in the playoffs wherein the other superstar will score 30 and Bron 20. this is supposedly “best team his ever had”. no one on this team can put big problems on the opposing team night in night out. but many of the problems can be pointed to directly to the coach. i just can’t believe that the second option on offense is Shaq and worst Mo. what’s happening to Williams is a combination of putting too much load on him on offense and him just can’t step up. as much as i love williams he is a 4th option on a championship team at best. shaq still can but the problem is we rely too much on the guy. there’s a limit to that guy. now lets go to Jamison. Jamison’s production is what i can blame most to the coaching staff as a whole. i’m really confused. what did we bring him in for? to knock down 3′s when shaq is doubled? just a stretch 4? the guy is putting up 20 and 10 before the trade and i can’t believe we don’t run a play for him. i mean aside from Lebron HE IS THE MOST POTENT GUY ON OUR OFFENSE WHO CAN SCORE ON HIS OWN!!! i’m really disappointed of the fact that we can’t utilize him enough. WHY CAN’T THE COACHING STAFF SEE WHAT’S OBVIOUS?? why can’t they rely to Jamison to create on his own rather than get Shaq or Williams going? why can’t our offense give Jamison a chance to create on his own and impose another match-up problem for the opposing team? next defense: we should be CONSTANTLY putting pressure on Rondo ALL GAME LONG! why can’t we put Hickson on Garnett when Jamison can’t guard him? is there another problem on West? why did Brown never called him up in the 2nd half? why can’t we adjust when Rondo was exploding in the 3rd and that we know that Mo Williams is guarding him? on the course of Rondo’s big 3rd quarter the guy guarding him was Williams and the “different looks” was gone? why can’t brown adjust to what he’s seeing where us common fans can see? i still believe on Brown, but it just pains me to heart to see what i’m seeing on him. i can’t believe i have to say this after agreeing to what Anton said in the other post for Mike Brown. i give a big credit to boston but it’s more of a matter of us stepping up. how HUNGRY are we?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Bron’s performance tonight is garbage. you know what i’m most happy most in our performance in game 3? it’s not lebron’s big game. it’s Jamison’s 20 and 11. in that game and most of this series LeBron is looking for the game to come to him. he’s checking himself by starting on jumpshots. game 3 it came great but in 5 it backfired.

  • BostonBaller

I’ll say it again, this series is NOT over , we have to win 1 more game and that game has to go thru LBJ. I wasn’t there but from my seat it looked as if LBJ pulled a Kobe by not going all out. From a distance it doesn’t look like an injury causing the misses. (Good help D). What if the 2 Mikes switched teams, that would be funny for everyone except ATL & Cleveland. KG is ball’n, Ray hits when he needs to (most of the time) P double is using a lot of energy covering LBJ and finally had a decent offensive game. Perk isn’t intimidated by Shaq and neither is G. Davis. Roscoe is rounding into shape, TA is playing really well and then there is Rondo. I wish M. Daniels got a little more PT but who am I to argue w/ Doc’s decisions?

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

i agree with you for the most part J. Every championship team has at least 2 players who can give the other team headaches on defense any given night. the 90s bulls had jordan and pippen. the lakers used to have shaq and kobe, now it’s kobe and pau. the spurs have timmy, manu and parker. the cavs only have one such player, and that’s lebron. mo’s a good player, don’t get me wrong, but he’s not that type of player. shaq can still be effective, but as his age it’s almost impossible to be consistent enough to be a reliable #2. I’d say their best shot at a consistent second option is antawn, but like people have said, there are no plays run for him. to tell you the truth, a lot of things about lebron annoy me, so i’d be the first to throw him under the bus, but the cavs’ continuous postseason struggles are the faults of coaches for not working to build a second option way more than it’s lebron’s fault.

  • riggs

i loved how mo williams was talking smack to rondo, i guess his mouth was the only thing to show up this series. YOURE NOT ON RONDOS LEVEL MAURICE.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

^as much as i want to defend Mo, you’re right riggs.

  • BostonBaller

J, I feel your pain but Jamison can’t get his if the coach on the court doesn’t direct the ball his way. You said he doesn’t have the luxury of another good player who can score when he is not on his game then you asked why they didn’t get it to Jamison more b/c he was their next potent guy on offense who can get his own shot. Which to me means that they DO indeed have another reliable scorer. (Jamison in the playoffs 16 & 8) I’m not being too critical i just want you to realize that when they were steam rolling teams everyone said how good they were from top to bottom but as soon as they lose 1 (ONE) game the story changes to “the supporting cast sucks”. I think the Cavs as a team are really really good otherwise they wouldn’t have had the best overall record.

  • BostonBaller

    Jamison’s numbers are 16 & 8 not a smiley face…

mo talked smack to rondo?! that’s just nonsense. damnit, and i’ve been defending mo.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

jamison is averaging 16 and 8 with no plays runned. what if he become the “true” second otion on this team? and have MORE plays even iso’s given to him next to bron? i just wonder…

  • riggs

also loved shaq tellin perk he wasnt gonna do ish, you b**** a** n****

Even Lebron is allowed to have a bad game every once in a while. The difference between the Cavs and the Celts is when Pierce has a bad game, other guys pick up the slack. In Cleveland, our offense relies on Lebron playing well for everyone else to get good looks. As Lebron goes, so go the Cavs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

^ cause we don’t know how to use our players in offense.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@J: Good point about Antawn. If he can coexist on that Wizards team with chucksters Caron and Gil, there’s zero reason why the Cavs staff can’t work him in to be a 20-10 guy next to Bron. Antawn should not just be one of the sidekicks. He should, really, be the Pau to Lebron’s Kobe. Your Cavs have to utilize him better indeed.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

And yes as things are they should still go to Shaq. Him in the low post is still a high percentage option. But its like he needs to take several dribbles down there before making a sorta predictable hook shot or something now, since he can’t overpower Perkins. It is not efficient.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

as interesting as it is to examine the cavs, can we give some credit to the celtics too? their defense–except for in game 3–has been nothing short of phenomenal, i’d say as good as it was in 2008. they’ve been playing great team ball and everyone knows their role. they’ve also fixed too major problems they had during the regular season–turnovers and rebounding. i know i’m sounding like the celtics fan i am right now, but in the midst of our analyses of the cavs–which is very interesting and i’m not discouraging it–let’s not forget to give credit to the team almost everyone counted out.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Wonder what Mo was saying to Rondo? “How do I shot ball?”

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

lol Joel O’s. By the way, Joel, I read the article on your website about NBA on NBC, and I loved it. I totally understand what you mean and feel very similarly.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

@bostonballer: they do, but because they can’t utilize him at FULL, at the same time they don’t. if that makes sense.

  • BostonBaller

It was funny watching KG going over to chill Rondo out so he wouldn’t get tossed or worse…KG in all his rants is still a smart vet. Ray slid over near rondo & Mo and it looked like he said “you’re better than that” meaning don’t get sucked into anything.

  • J

and i’m not being critical for just one game. i’ve been silent for too loong because of my faith in this team and the whole organization.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@letsmotor: Hey, thanks! Can’t bring back the good old days, but this is not a bad time indeed to be watching the NBA. But I do miss staying up late and getting so damn jumpy and pumped up hearing “roundball rock” that I HAD to go do some ball handling drills while waiting for the jump ball to start play.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

I hear you, Joel. Hearing that music makes me feel like it’s May 1998 and me and my brother are in the driveway playing one-on-one while we listen to the radio, waiting for the day’s games to start.

  • vtrobot

when the C’s click lately, you see that team who steamrolled through the texas triangle in ’08. they’re older and more worn down now, but dang they have their moments. happy to be spending tomorrow night watching them try to close it out instead of fight for their lives. very weird vibe in the Q last night. what a horrible last game to play for a franchise. i want to see shaq and perk exchange blows tomorrow night. mike brown, i think you should play delonte and JJ more and runs plays for antawn more. just my 2 cents. thought it could help.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

@vtrobot: I agree with you suggestions for the cavs. in fact, the cavs would probably do well to have you replace mike brown as their coach for game 6.

  • Bently

    Ray’s jumper >>>> nba

  • Bruno

I don’t see the cavs dancin’ anymore …

  • BostonBaller

Joel O’s & letsmotor, you guys must be pretty young if you are talking about 98 as the good ol’ days. lol. Awwww to be that young again. My good ol’ days started in 78 w/ the C’s. little to no graphics on tv and short shorts. lol

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

amen to the NBA on NBC jingle. the fancy graphics and extra stuff nowadays actually make the whole watching experience worse.
