Drastic Change Needed in Big D

It’s time for Dirk to go.

by Rasheed Malek / @warriorsworld

The Mavericks concluded yet another season in rather disappointing fashion. Following the series loss to the San Antonio Spurs, there’s been a lot of talk in Dallas about changes having to be made. The biggest change Dallas needs to make is shipping Dirk Nowitzki out and bringing in new blood.

“We’ve made a lot of mistakes.”

The words of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban following his team’s early dismissal from the Playoffs yet again. Cuban has never been an owner to sit back and make reactionary moves. Rather, he’s become known as the most involved owner in the NBA who constantly hunts to improve his franchise by any means necessary. He let Steve Nash walk away too soon, and he’s made blockbuster traDirk Nowitzkides to strengthen his team. But the one move he hasn’t made until now is getting rid of Dirk Nowitzki.

Teams follow and adapt the mentality of their best player, which is why the Mavs have been long considered soft and mentally weak as evidenced by their annual departure from the Playoffs with no championship trophy in hand. Nowitzki is a great player who dominates early and fails under the bright lights. When the going gets tough Nowitzki responds with a fade-away jumper, when it comes time to rally the troops and lead, Nowitzki puts his head down and fades into the background.

Cuban has changed the supporting cast around the German star multiple times with the hope of finally assembling a team which can get over the hump to win a championship. He brought in Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood among others to add toughness and defense, which ultimately proved to be a failed attempt. Cuban has done everything in his power to make it work with Nowitzki being the main piece to the puzzle; however, Nowitzki has failed to hold up his end of the bargain. Nowitzki, never a mentally tough player to begin with, is even more damaged as a result of the constant failures in the quest for a championship.

Every off-season Nowitzki retreats overseas usually to do some soul searching with his long-time mentor Holger Geschwindner. Nowitzki will presumably do so again this off-season as he tries to make sense of another disappointing season. What makes this off-season much different than the rest is, for the first time in his career, his return to Dallas is in doubt. Nowitzki is in the final year of his contract which will pay him $21.5 million next season and for which he holds an early-termination clause. It’s difficult to see Dirk opting-out of his deal and walking away from such a significant amount, so the only way for him to leave Dallas will be via trade.

Now is the time for Cuban to deal the German All-star and bring in another centerpiece who can take the Mavericks to a championship. Nowitzki still has great value around the League especially being in the last year of his deal. This off-season will have the greatest number of superstars ever to hit the market, thus presenting the perfect opportunity for Cuban to strengthen his team.

The player Cuban needs to go after in a sign and trade this summer is Chris Bosh. Bosh would be afforded the opportunity to Chris Boshreturn to his hometown of Dallas and be the “Man” in a bigger market which he has longed for quite some time. The deal would allow Toronto to get a star in return, maintain cap flexibility and ship Bosh to the Western Conference where they wouldn’t have to see him more than twice a season. Nowitzki would get a fresh start in Toronto where he’ll continue to be the focal point of the offense and be able to enter the open market the following off-season as a free agent.

Dallas would completely remake their team and more importantly shed their label of being a soft and mentally weak team ill prepared to make a championship run. Bosh would instantly make the Mavericks a better defensive team along with giving them a more explosive offense as Bosh isn’t a ball stopper in the fashion of Dirk.

Bosh is yearning for the spotlight, he wants to be mentioned in the same breath as the other elite players in the League and he realizes that won’t happen by staying in Toronto. Put Bosh in Dallas and watch him take off not only on the court but off the court as his endearing personality makes him a attractive prospect for endorsements.

Bosh surrounded with a supporting cast which includes Caron Butler, Jason Terry, Brendan Haywood and upcoming sensation Rodrigue Beaubois is a lethal threat in the Western Conference. Add in the best owner in basketball and Dallas has a Championship contender for years to come. Bosh is already back home in Dallas working on his game, making the necessary improvements and if Cuban does the right thing, he’ll be able to stay in Dallas year-round.

if you guys noticed Mr Malek’s twitter account, you would have already guessed the content and tone of the article before you read.
my two cents on the mavs: dirk, as the undisputed best player, should definitely shoulder some blame for yet another 1st round collapse. but more than that, the rest of the team did not step up to the plate. most of them did not make any sort of impact in the series, especially the backcourt. i’m one of jason kidd’s biggest fans, but he didn’t do ANYTHING in the series. other than beaubois’ mini-explosion in game 6, the guards were entirely invisible.
the biggest culprit of the series go to carlisle though. for a seasoned and successful coach, he was thoroughly out-coached and looked completely lost on the side line. his substitution pattern and strategy made no sense. no one knows their role and that’s just weird for a team that played so well in the regular season.
also it doesn’t help that they played against the spurs. i think they would have advanced against all other teams not named lakers.

Hi Malek. Hope you don’t take the other comments too seriously.

I thought this was a good ‘what if?’ kind of piece and I was thinking that Dirk would be welcome in Toronto. I don’t think it would make a big difference to the Mavs as contenders, though. Probably hurt them, actually.

I was also pondering, since Cuban/Nelson make personnel moves every year, if the Mavs have ever really had a chance to +build+ themselves into a better working team. The Spurs are probably the best example in the NBA of a team that was put together piece by piece, the core of which was done through the draft, very deliberately. The free agents signed in SA tend to be short lived or ineffective (except for Finley). Meanwhile, Dallas changes core players pretty much every year and has done so since Finely and Nash left.

  • everything has pretty much been said. what a dumb f**kin article. appears you don’t watch mavs bball. you’re a joke

I actually think that Lebron will get blamed.
The same way he got blamed last year.
The same certain folks were saying his 50 win seasons weren’t enough back in the day because the Cavs couldn’t beat the Pistons in the playoffs.
    Kobe has also been criticized.
Two people have not been criticized as heavily as Dirk, and they probably should be.
Wade and Carmelo. I think Wade gets a pass because of injuries and his crap team, plus he already has a ring.
Carmelo gets a pass for God know what reason.
So, if Dirk fans think it’s unfair that Melo and Wade don’t get the same questions as Dirk, I respect your pain.
But, Kobe and Lebron get criticized when they fail.

You make a great argument in Dirk’s favor, and honestly, I don’t hate the big German. I respect him a lot more now than I did in the past when I felt he was being slurped by the media and League.
I just felt like some of y’all are saying the flak he catches now is entirely unjust, and I disagree. I think he deserves some of it, mainly becaue he really hasn’t redeemed himself from that GS series, in my opinion.
And I’m tired of everybody downing Dirk’s teammates. Some struggled, some got off.
Tony Parker wasn’t exactly killing for the Spurs and neither was Tim Duncan.

    Teddy
D-Wade would like a word with you. And if you think Shaq was “top tier” when the Heat won it all, then you and I need to have a long discussion.
And, I would argue that Pau Gasol isn’t top tier, and neither is anyone on the Magic’s team besides possibly Dwight Howard.
I would also argue that the Celtics lacked a true “top tier” player when they won it.
I use a grading system to establish tiers for players with 93-100 being your 1s. 85-92 you 2s and so on.
Dirk is a 1. But, he’s like a 93-94. Kobe, Lebron and Wade are like 98-100. That’s top tier.
    Pau would be a 90-92.
Garnett, back when the Celtics won, would have been 93-94. Pierce and Ray Allen would be high 89s or so.
Detroit’s starting five when they won would have been in the 80s, with some players 2s and other players 3s.
Anyway, I think that Dirk fans seem to be saying he needs another 1 to win it all.
I’m saying that as a franchise guy, as a 1, Dirk should be able to win it all with a solid collection of 2s and 3s.
I honestly think that his weird style makes it hard to build around him. Kind of like Iverson back in the day. That’s why I would prefer Bosh because he’s a tad more traditional in how he scores and what he does.

Dirk has to go if Cuban wants a chip. He’s not a killer and i never trust players whose games are just outside and nothing more. He plays no D and his rebounds are mostly by default because of his height. The only time i’ve seen dude upset was when he was mad at Terry for letting Nash bust that 3 on him in game 6. No fire and drive. You can’t win when your number 1 guy doesn’t possess those traits. I hate Bosh and he’s not the answer for dallas but they can get substantial pieces for Dirk. They should pull that move.

  • Ronald

@Allenp: Whilst Lebron has caught flak for not winning a chip everyone points towards his supporting case and how weak they were. In addition, he has been labelled the best player constantly the past few years, and at some points best ever or just below Jordan, and the argument that he hasn’t won a ring is only used to distinguish him from being the best ever. Therefore, the flak Lebron takes isn’t remotely as strong as the one Dirk receives imho. Also about Shaq, the guy came of a finals appereance two years before and was still motivated to prove to the LA management their mistake in trading him. I don’t know how it is possible to justify dropping him from Most Dominant Ever to not really top tier in a span of two three years.

  • Ronald

And does anyone have proof that Dirk’s game is all “outside”? During the SAS-DAL series, he worked between the high-low post most of the time. And during game 1 he took most of his shots from the low block. I might be wrong, as I don’t have access to any shot charts.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Ronald
I watched Shaq the year the Heat won. He went from totaly unguardable to being outplayed by Erik Dampier. Check the tape if you don’t believe me. He was not top tier anymore. A top tier Shaq could not have been single covered by Dampier or Ben Wallace.
Lebron’s supporting cast has been weak. Is there some sort of dispute about this?
Honestly, do you think Lebron’s supporting cast has been on the same level as Dirk’s for the past five years?
Even this year, do you think Lebron or Dirk have a better supporting cast?
I have to say Dirk, with Kidd, Terry, Butler, Marion, Haywood, Barea, Beubois and Dampier has a better squad than Lebron does with Mo Wiliams, Jamison, Andy V, Hickson, Shaq and Delonte. Lebron doesn’t have bums, but he still has better talent than Dirk.
And I didn’t say Dirk doesn’t go inside. That’s one area where he’s really improved. Creating contact and shooting layups, I give him that fully. I just think how he scores, how he attacks, and the way the team has to get him off, causes problems. That’s why I compared him to Iverson, even if he’s a much better shooter.

  • Ronald

My comment regards to Dirk’s shooting wasnt targetted at you Allenp, it was towards CB34 and those that believe that a jumpshot is inherently a low percentage shot.

It is true that on paper, the Cavs seem to have less talent, but I think Lebron (at least the past two years) have had a better team. At least suited for LBJ’s skill-set. Everyone brings up the team that went to the finals against the Spurs and point towards how little talent the Cavs had, but its not like the Spurs were breeming with all-stars like the 2004 Lakers. And the past two years the Cavs won 60 games which was done as a team and not LBJ individually (albeit being a big part of reason). Honestly, the Cavs haven’t had too many weakenesses roster wise, I realzed this after watching them against the bulls where they kept subbing in players that honestly all had better talent than what the Bulls had. Even if the Cavs don’t have the “best” talent in th eleague they definitely are top 3 or 4 talent wise. And also, I brought up LBJ because I think that despite him getting flak for not winning, he does get a lot of unconditional love. Dirk on the other hand seems to be the posterboy for softness and choker despite having similar success as Lebron. The GS series however was quiet inexusable however but imho it was similar to Cavs v. Magic last year and had to do a lot with matchups.

  • Harrynuts

As a Toronto Raptor fan. Please take Bosh.
Bosh is magical he manages to disappear whe he doesn’t get the ball. On defence if he was orange he’d be a pylon.

  • http://dallasbasketball.com archerbro

LMAO, BOSH AS A #1 OPTION? ARE YOU AN IDIOT? BOSH LOST TO DIRK IN THE FINALS AND HE WAS THE #3 OPTION FOR THE HEAT.

DIRK IS A CHAMPION AND THE BEST PF IN THE LEAGUE GTFO.

    TAKE DAT WITH CHEW!!!!

    DIRK!!! TAKE DAT WITH CHEW!!!!

LOL @ this article. Obvious the author is somebody whose only observance of Maverick’s games is what little coverage ESPN feeds him on Sports Center. The Mav’s playoff failures the past three seasons were not on Dirk, he has had a very good playoffs every year since the collapse vs. Golden State. This year the entire league got to see what Dallas fans witnessed the past 3 seasons and playoffs. Dirk is the most clutch guy in the NBA. Dirk for Bosh? ROFL! Bosh is a good talent, but not on the same level as Dirk. Few in this league are. Kobe, maybe Dwight Howard, gee, can’t come up with any others.

  • Chris

    This guy has been fired…right?

  • Dillon

So uh, turns out that Dirk guy is pretty good under the bright lights huh?
