Fans Calling for Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

At this point, with commanding 2-0 series leads by both L.A. and Boston, the remainder of the Conference Finals appears to be a mere formality. The outcome isn’t what’s in doubt; the only question seems to be, When do the real games begin?

Everyone — save for fans of both the Suns and Magic — is just about ready for the main course to be served.

For the second consecutive game, with another victory over visiting Phoenix secured, Staples Center patrons loudly chanted, “We want Boston!” They’re ready for their team to try and get their revenge against the squad that humiliated them in the 2008 NBA Finals.

With the historic rematch seemingly on the horizon, Yahoo! takes a look at the restlessness in both Boston and Los Angeles:

Phoenix just doesn’t look capable of beating L.A. in four of the next five games. The Magic not only would have to do the same to the Celtics, they’d have to win twice in Boston. So here in California they dream of green. And in Boston Saturday, the “Beat L.A.” chants are sure to start early.

The Celtics have a record 17 NBA championships. The Lakers are second with 15. The two franchises have met 11 times in the Finals with Boston winning nine of the series. The back and forth in the 1980s cemented this as a rivalry for the ages, but the 2008 Finals (Boston in 6) are the most relevant should the teams meet again.

It’s that one that the fans here can’t forget. Nor can Kobe Bryant … When our Marc Spears asked Bryant earlier this week who he wanted to see in the Finals, Kobe just responded with a knowing smile. If losing to Phoenix in the early rounds with flawed teams still grinds him, then imagine what that Finals defeat to the Celtics meant? And don’t think for a second Kobe has forgotten or forgiven Boston fans for throwing rocks at the Lakers’ team bus as it tried to pull away from the Garden after the final Game 6 loss.

There are three days prior to the next Conference Finals game, three days for people to look ahead to what’s starting to feel more and more like an inevitability.

The playoffs are starting to get more repetative every year. Lakers will probally win, but i say Celtics in 6

  • Ken

If the Lakers win the West, I really hope the Celtics win the whole thing.

  • riggs

if they do make it i hope the celtics sweep just so they can take that smug look off kobe’s face.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

i know it’s premature of me, but i can’t help but be excited about this possibility. my favorite team vs. their rivals–what could be more exciting?!! and boston fans threw rocks at the team bus? after game 6? sorry about that, LA. not all boston fans are assholes.

  • Groves@uwa

i wanted magic vs suns finals

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

maybe the first competitive series in a while, it will be a great matchup…as a TrailBlazers fan I just hate both this clubs, C´s dont really know why…tough one, I like Rondo, Jesus Shatlesworth, Gasol and Lamar Odom, HATE PIERCE, KG, PERKINS AND ALL THE LAKERS FRONTRUNNING BANDWAGON FANBASE minus The one and only JackNicholson…dont know what the fUk should i think of this, at least last year i got to pick the Magic without hesitation…sh!t

  • http://www.twitter.com/retepadam RetepAdam

    No thanks.

You could have asked me at the start of the season, and I’d tell you that I’d rather see any other permutation of Finals matchups than Lakers/Celtics.

Invokes memories of the Vote Or Die episode of South Park. Choosing between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich.

  • kh

Oh how I long to see the day when The purple and gold seek revenge on the Celts, making up for a poor display back in 08. There is nothing I’d like to see more. In 08 the celtics tried to out physical the Lakers, not this time around. I’m stoked! I guess they both need to close out before I get too excited.

Rocks? wow, what jerks. Don’t paint us all as complete idiots although I’m sure each team has their share of idiot fans. We still have to get by The Magic before I discuss another opponent. I just want us to stay healthy enough to continue playing. hahaha

  • Eat Wheaties time comming lol

Wow, as a basketball fan wanted to see kobe v lebron but as a Laker Fan wants Boston as well. Win win hopefully this Year Boston V Lakers Finals! Much respect to KG regular Lionheart,,, the media need to stop kissing Kobes Ass loool there too late where were they while they crowned Nash Mvp those two year Kobe was incredible and the real basketball players knew it.

P.s Leave Lebron alone he’s going through that tuff losing period we laker fans shouldn’t forget those round 1 knockouts. Lebron gd luck this summer keep your head up use them haters to get better like Kobe and Mike did.

  • http://screwheadsanonymous.blogspot.com cramzy

I really wanted to see Vince and Dwight get a ring but the more I watch the Celtics, the bigger fan I’m becoming. Boston/LA at the very least will yield some competitive games which we really haven’t seen thus far.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

A Lakers vs Celtics finals only hurts the league. Champions have become completely homogeneous and boring. Stern loves it though but he loves anything that grow his coffers. He also loves anything that lets him showcase league history that he has yet to umdermine. People will watch but only those in Boston or LA will care. 7 teams have won the championship since 1984. There are 30 teams. More of the same is not what the league needs, it will only encorage disinterest.

  • MIke

I wouldnt be counting the Magic out yet. I think Dwight, VC, and Jameer are about to go off.

  • nicko

does whoopie goldberg coach the knicks?

  • Orlando Green

@BackInBlack The nba has always been repetative.. just think in the past 30 years only 8 teams have won the championship! And it’s about to be 31 years. Celtics are playing very well, but I think Lakers take it this time around!

Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, 76ers, Rockets, Spurs, Heat, Pistons!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I know I can’t wait. The two best teams in the league, playing for all the marbles!
    That’s amazing.

  • Brian

If this does happen and the Celtics end up winning, get ready for the * to be placed next to that 09 title Laker fans.

The hype will be unbearable if the Lakers face the Celtics … better not be more than 5 days in between, the wait between games is too long

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton
  • chingy

Be careful what you wish for Lakers fans; also, who else thinks this playoffs has been one of the least competitive in recent memories? Seems like the only good series is Boston/Magic and Lakers/Thunder (and who would have thought that the playoff-rookie Thunder be Lakers’ toughest challenge?)

  • Jack Cooper

Fans Calling for Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals? I’m not,and nobody else is either. Its like watching the spurs back in the days,it gets old.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

IF the Lakers face the Celtics – main differences from 2008, in order of importance: Lakers have Home Court, improvement of Rondo, Ron Artest on Paul Pierce, Andrew Bynum playing (but still gimpy), Ray Allen shooting well before series, Rasheed Wallace, Gasol and Odom know what to expect in terms of physical play (whether they can do anything about it remains to be seen)…

  • Arek

Who the hell actually wanted the Suns in the final for reasons other than they don’t like the Lakers

  • Arek

    Jack Cooper..
All Lakers/Celtics fans are, and since those are the 2 teams that are going to advance to the finals, fans of other teams don’t matter

  • Arek

Jackie Moon you also forgot a Kobe seeking revenge

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

I’m a Lakers Fan, But did anybody cares about L.Barbosa?

@Arek – if winning isn’t motivation enough to win a cookie, there’s something wrong. The revenge angle is for writers and myth makers. Execution, practice, and attention to detail get it done , although revenge might help you put in that extra practice, it’s not going to help with the other two.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you don’t want to watch Lakers vs. Celtics then I question your committment to good basketball.
The playoffs have shown these are the two best teams, easily. They both run beautiful offenses. They both can play incredible defense (although Boston is more consistent). They have stars and superstars on both squads, talented inside and outside play, good coaching.
I mean, what more could you ask for as a fan, even without the longstanding history involving the two teams.
You don’t want to see if Gasol recovers his nutsack when going against KG after Garnett unmmanned him in 2008? YOu don’t want to see if Odom can shine this time, intead of being nullified by Perkins? You’re not curious to see Pierce and Artest, who have bad blood, scare off in an epic battle? You don’t wnat to know if Rondo can continue to shine when Kobe guards him, or if he gets nullified like he did in 2008? Hell, you don’t want to see what happens if hte Lakers decided to put Fisher on Rondo and Kobe/Artest is forced to chase Ray Allen around all series with Allen’s stroke going?
Can the Celtics bench overwhelm the Lakers’? Will Nate Robinson get any tick?
I mean, damn, I want that series BAD. That’s a basketball fans dream. There is no way you can honestly say that it is a surefire victory for either team, and the series should go seven, easily.
That’s not boring to me at all. Far from it.

  • jorge

Many complaint about repetitiveness!! If you are a fan a basketball, you want to see one of the best players in Kobe vs 3 stars on the other team, defense, good passing and nastyness. If that doesn’t do it for you, then hope you recorded Atlanta vs Magic…to enjoy for years to come….Weak a****s teams.
The best of the best against eachother. I was at the laker game and I wasn’t one chanting “We want Boston”.
To be honest, Lakers playing Suns affects them. Weak kid fighing when the bigger kid awaits outside school.
If lakers pull it vs Boston, Kobe will gain my full respect next to Jordan.

  • http://banksitin.blogspot.com/ vmcb

I can’t root for either team. Ugh.

  • Logues

celtics baby yea! they takin it all again this yr! hope kg can get his much deserved finals mvp

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Somewhere Derek Fisher just woke up drenched in sweat and screaming ‘Rajon Rondo’.. My call; Celts in 7. Many interesting subplots: Imo Pierce will be living at the line going against Artest, the KG-Pau match-up, Bynum’s bum knee, will Kobe be playing mediocore like in ’08?, will LA’s weak bench hurt them?, will C’s miss Posey/Sam-I-Am too much?, Let’s get it on – love the prospect of a rematch.

  • Robb

Revenge!!! Honestly I’ll be more nervous than excited but bring it on!

  • LA Huey

    co-sign Hangtime Hec.

  • Bruno

co-sign allenp and jackie moon … it will be a different story but it will be a huge finals and way better than orlando-la or boston-phoenix or orlando-phoenix

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Boston is simply playing incredible defense. Should be an epic finals. Boston in six, kg finals mvp. Maybe rondo if he triple doubles

  • Conoro

    Lakers in 6.

  • Alex

Boston fans have become worse than New York fans, ugh

  • doyouwantmore

I’m so conflicted. I respect the Lakers execution and teamwork, but I can’t stand Laker fans. I love Boston’s dirt-dog gritty defense and the way Rondo has dismissed all his doubters, but the way KG, Baby, and a few other Celtics handle themselves makes me want to turn my TV off when they’re playing sometimes. I would have loved to have seen Magic and Suns in the finals. Celtics/Lakers is like watching the two biggest a&&holes on the block beat each other up, but it’s such a good fight you have to watch. I guess I’m rooting for the old weathered Celtics, for Ray Allen more than anyone else. Yes, Allenp the two teams who make it to the finals are the most deserving, but the fans of other franchises deserve better.

  • James

Celtics VS Lakers finals? That would mean a whole summer of Celtics and Laker fans bickering like schoolgirls on Basketball forums and Basketball videos on Youtube. No thanks. C’mon Magic and Suns!

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

@doyouwantmore – root for the team, not the team’s fans

  • Noel

Yeah what people really want to see is Dwight’s nonexistent offensive game vs. Amare’s nonexistent defensive game. Lakers-Celtics is like Pacquaio-Mayweather. You might not like either one but they’re two champions and that’s what fans want to see. What else are you going to watch, baseball?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

This finals will be different from 08, Jackie covered some of the main reasons. Like the reversal of The home court advantage, but seriously I don’t understand how everyone forgets that LA didn’t have a center, while Boston had the physical advantage with not only KP but PJ Brown, Powe and how big was posey’s help d on Kobe? U can throw all that out the window. Now add the addition of Artest on D against Pdouble, someone said KG dominated pau…ERR! It was Perkins that enforced the paint! Even if Bynum doesn’t score much, his body alone will make a difference against Perk. Boston will no doubt set the defensive tempo. But make no mistake these two teams are matched up more evenly this time, I don’t c Boston forcing thier will the same way they did in 08′ Boston’s gonna need all the offense they can get I think they’re gonna miss House. Lakers in 7.

  • Arek

@Jackie Moon – yeah obviously winning is a motivation, that’s stating the obvious lol… but things like revenge and all give you that extra motivation, it’s more fuel to the fire.. it’s what MJ used to do and what Kobe’s doing now.

it’s in the nature of all human beings, that’s how we are as people.. in order for us to do something we need motivation and the more motivation the more determined we are.. everything is fueled by something and the more you have of it the bigger the fire will be

The reason why people are motivated to win is because they don’t want to lose, that’s fuel to the fire.. then you look at the team you’re playing, oh it’s the team that beat you and humiliated you 2 years ago, that’s more fuel to the fire.. then you look at how Celtics fans were saying if the C’s were healthy last year they be going for a three-peat right now that’s more fuel to the fire

get out of here with the trying to be politicaly correct “oh winning should be enough motivation itself” BS

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Nah NegativeKreep, check the tapes.
Garnett took Pau’s manhood on both ends.
I don’t care about the stats, watch the tapes. Pau didn’t want it with Garnett and had more shrinkage than George Constanza.
Now Perkins was nice, but for most of the series they let him guard Odom. That’s why I said Odom needs redemption.
    Big changes this time around
    1. Rondo is a beast now. So, can Kobe contain him like he did last time and rest on defense?
    2. Gasol appears to have grown a pair. Is this a mirage or the real deal?
    3. Can Paul Pierce still give Artest the business? Artest is slower than his prime, but so is Pierce. Great matchup.
    4. If the Lakers can’t hide Kobe on Rondo, is he going to tire himself out chasing Ray Allen around? Jordan had that problem guarding Reggie at times.
    5. Is Bynum going to give Perkins series problems?
    6. Which bench is better?
    7. Which style do the refs favor?

  • Klav

I’m calling the Nets in 4. MP got the bragging rights, they had the best record. But, both teams are firing on all cylinders at the right time. The question is, who is going to be more efficient? Boston’s defense is overall better and consistent, but LA can put up more points and has options with everyone on the court. Bynum and Pau got the post, Ron from deep, Fish from deep and midrange and Kobe all over. Then again the C’s defense is crazy physical. I think its redemption time, and honestly I think the extra 2 years will mean that Boston may not be able to keep this up for the entire series given it could go to 7.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    Lakers in 7

  • LA Huey

Boston’s bigs are going to give the Lake Show’s the business. Perk has emerged, Rondo is a new problem, TAllen, Baby, Sheed will replace Posey, Powe, PJ. I look forward to seeing Artest v Pierce, Bynum v Perk, and how Phil accounts for Rondo.

  • LA Huey

btw, biggest revenge story is Vujacic against Jesus.

  • jorge

Is Sasha still an NBA Player? Wow, this dude is laughing all the way to the bank without actually sweating.
This is why I think Lakers need to f*****ing play and play hard if they want to beat Boston. For Players like Sasha, Farmar, Odom, Brown, players that like to relax or panic when the time comes.

  • http://kamndestiny@yahoo.com swisha sweet

finally a finals worth watching, Lakers vrs celts. this is history guys and if garnets knee? this would b 3 yeares in a row for both teams…this lakers team is built to beat i particular team and thats the celts. no question. both teams are stalked with 7 footers.for me personally its about watching greatness. their is nonthing great about the tragics r the suns they run and gun and hope to score more points. but with la and the celts its x and o..triangle offense plus a great scorer vs a breat defense. i like both teams and i like kobe but if he keeps gettin rings he needs to earn them like mj. and that magic team is not a challange for this hungrey team in la. only one player i can think of looks hungrier that garnett and he has a chip on his shoulder

  • http://Yahoo.com 323 356 9658

F*** all the laker haters. Lakers I’m six

  • Tsenguunb

Allen, Honestly I thought KG vs Pau was a wash offensively, and remember that exact term used to describe them on the telecast. But I can’t argue with u about Pau, he Played Amare like D’ the entire time, it was fugly. I just can’t give KG that much credit, when he didn’t have that much better of a series himself. He didn’t live up to the Hype…the whole leader of the team, setting the tone n’ what not. I thought he performed better in his Gatorade commercial vs kareem. But ur prolly a lil closer to the truth on that one. But if u watch Pau play every game like I do then ul know his go to move is back down, shake spin right or left hook 3 to 4 ft from the rim. Perk was the guy keepin that from happening. Not $kinny a$$ KG. Wich was My main point, that it’s a huge advantage to have a true center versus finesse forwards.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

@ La Huey, #1 Sheed had 1 good game recently. 1. #2 Tony Allens entire game. Depends on Rondo feeding him. So if ur talking bench players Even Lamar is more consistant than those 2 $hits. Babys aight. But ur smoke’n some gooey sticky if u really think any of those guys equals to a posey. Gtfoh.

Oh yay. Lakers v Celtics. That’s new.

5 teams have won 26 of the past 30 Championships, soon to be 27 of 31. As a fan in another country with no geographical allegiance to any one team, the NBA’s getting pretty freaking boring come Finals time.

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

@SamJ. How many times has Manchester United won the premiership? How many times has Brazil won the world cup? Only new teams are interesting? I really dont understand the logic here. Did the 80′s NBA get less exciting because the Lakers and Celtics kept playing each other-NO. It got more exciting because a true rivalry was brewing. It’s going to be the best finals in twenty years, too bad youre gonna miss it.

  • topo

why are so many people so confident about boston? L.A. has home court , has no injuries this time, and kobe is probably going to have a little extra motivation from those embarassing memories. Boston 3peat if garnett had been healthy last year??? bullsh*t!!!! I say L.A. would be going for the 3peat if Bynum and Ariza had been healthy in the 08 finals

We all know Bynum wouldn’t have done jack sh!t for the Lakers in ’08. The difference between ’08 and ’09 for the Lakers was TREVOR ARIZA, and that’s IT.

  • Ali

I love it how everyone wants to rehash 2008, let it go fellaz, we can talk 2008 match ups, injuries, who’s soft, who’s tough, etc. all day. 2010 is upon us now! We can see the lakers have gotten better from 2008, everyone on that team. We can see Boston may have gotten a step slower (Rondo not included) but they still have their MOJO. Orlando though it would cake walk over Boston, bad mistake! I’m a firm believer in the best team wins the championship, now if that is bad for any sport, I’m not sure what we’re doing watching. Let’s go Boston and L.A….Oh yeah “Only Real Kings Have Rings” thought I’d kick Lebron while he was down, Hahaha….

kobe wants another ring. whos gonna stop him. he no longer has to burn energy guarding the best player on opposing teams . ron artest wants a ring badddd. ill take the lakes and celts over that magic team anyday.

  • Ali
  • vtrobot

Both teams are better than their 2008 versions. I think LA is has made a slightly better upgrade in talent and cohesiveness than Boston has, but I say the outcome is the same. If Bynum were 100% I’d give the edge to the Lakers. LA is rolling, but the Cavs were rolling. The Magic were rolling.

  • vtrobot

@ The Lakers: You don’t want to hear PP say that he’s the best player on the planet again do you? You know he will.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

It’s amazing how much flak Amare gets and how little Nash gets.
Hell, Howard rebounded from a subpar game with a 30 and 8 game, he still gets more criticism than Nash who has yet to crack 20 points, or hit a three.
    Amazing.

  • monkeyball

I love the NBA because the best team usually wins, and the playoffs reveal which team is really championship-caliber. Cavs lost the the Celts? That means the Celtics are better. This is not true in any other sport, where luck comes into play a lot more, or when a great team has one bad game and is out (e.g., P.F.C. Barcelona at the Champions League).
There are exceptions, but by and large the NBA playoffs do the best job of presenting greatness.
Thus, love them or hate them, the Lakers win this year. Again.
For those counting, that would be 5 rings and 7 Finals appearances for Kobe. And he’s only 32. MJ and Shaq were winning titles in their late 30′s. How many rings for Kobe? 8? 9?

  • speedingtime

Why would anybody outside of LA or Boston want to see these two teams in the Finals AGAIN. The NBA playoffs are becoming a broken record.

I won’t be watching the Finals this year unless Phoenix pulls off a miracle. How many teams have won the finals the last 30 years? Yeah, I thought so.
