Fans Calling for Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

At this point, with commanding 2-0 series leads by both L.A. and Boston, the remainder of the Conference Finals appears to be a mere formality. The outcome isn’t what’s in doubt; the only question seems to be, When do the real games begin?

Everyone — save for fans of both the Suns and Magic — is just about ready for the main course to be served.

For the second consecutive game, with another victory over visiting Phoenix secured, Staples Center patrons loudly chanted, “We want Boston!” They’re ready for their team to try and get their revenge against the squad that humiliated them in the 2008 NBA Finals.

With the historic rematch seemingly on the horizon, Yahoo! takes a look at the restlessness in both Boston and Los Angeles:

Phoenix just doesn’t look capable of beating L.A. in four of the next five games. The Magic not only would have to do the same to the Celtics, they’d have to win twice in Boston. So here in California they dream of green. And in Boston Saturday, the “Beat L.A.” chants are sure to start early.

The Celtics have a record 17 NBA championships. The Lakers are second with 15. The two franchises have met 11 times in the Finals with Boston winning nine of the series. The back and forth in the 1980s cemented this as a rivalry for the ages, but the 2008 Finals (Boston in 6) are the most relevant should the teams meet again.

It’s that one that the fans here can’t forget. Nor can Kobe Bryant … When our Marc Spears asked Bryant earlier this week who he wanted to see in the Finals, Kobe just responded with a knowing smile. If losing to Phoenix in the early rounds with flawed teams still grinds him, then imagine what that Finals defeat to the Celtics meant? And don’t think for a second Kobe has forgotten or forgiven Boston fans for throwing rocks at the Lakers’ team bus as it tried to pull away from the Garden after the final Game 6 loss.

There are three days prior to the next Conference Finals game, three days for people to look ahead to what’s starting to feel more and more like an inevitability.

The playoffs are starting to get more repetative every year. Lakers will probally win, but i say Celtics in 6

  • Ken

If the Lakers win the West, I really hope the Celtics win the whole thing.

  • riggs

if they do make it i hope the celtics sweep just so they can take that smug look off kobe’s face.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

i know it’s premature of me, but i can’t help but be excited about this possibility. my favorite team vs. their rivals–what could be more exciting?!! and boston fans threw rocks at the team bus? after game 6? sorry about that, LA. not all boston fans are assholes.

  • Groves@uwa

    No thanks.

You could have asked me at the start of the season, and I’d tell you that I’d rather see any other permutation of Finals matchups than Lakers/Celtics.

Invokes memories of the Vote Or Die episode of South Park. Choosing between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich.

  • kh

Oh how I long to see the day when The purple and gold seek revenge on the Celts, making up for a poor display back in 08. There is nothing I’d like to see more. In 08 the celtics tried to out physical the Lakers, not this time around. I’m stoked! I guess they both need to close out before I get too excited.

Rocks? wow, what jerks. Don’t paint us all as complete idiots although I’m sure each team has their share of idiot fans. We still have to get by The Magic before I discuss another opponent. I just want us to stay healthy enough to continue playing. hahaha

  • Eat Wheaties time comming lol

Wow, as a basketball fan wanted to see kobe v lebron but as a Laker Fan wants Boston as well. Win win hopefully this Year Boston V Lakers Finals! Much respect to KG regular Lionheart,,, the media need to stop kissing Kobes Ass loool there too late where were they while they crowned Nash Mvp those two year Kobe was incredible and the real basketball players knew it.

P.s Leave Lebron alone he’s going through that tuff losing period we laker fans shouldn’t forget those round 1 knockouts. Lebron gd luck this summer keep your head up use them haters to get better like Kobe and Mike did.

I really wanted to see Vince and Dwight get a ring but the more I watch the Celtics, the bigger fan I’m becoming. Boston/LA at the very least will yield some competitive games which we really haven’t seen thus far.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

A Lakers vs Celtics finals only hurts the league. Champions have become completely homogeneous and boring. Stern loves it though but he loves anything that grow his coffers. He also loves anything that lets him showcase league history that he has yet to umdermine. People will watch but only those in Boston or LA will care. 7 teams have won the championship since 1984. There are 30 teams. More of the same is not what the league needs, it will only encorage disinterest.

  • MIke

I wouldnt be counting the Magic out yet. I think Dwight, VC, and Jameer are about to go off.

  • nicko

does whoopie goldberg coach the knicks?

  • Orlando Green

@BackInBlack The nba has always been repetative.. just think in the past 30 years only 8 teams have won the championship! And it’s about to be 31 years. Celtics are playing very well, but I think Lakers take it this time around!

Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, 76ers, Rockets, Spurs, Heat, Pistons!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I know I can’t wait. The two best teams in the league, playing for all the marbles!
    That’s amazing.

  • Brian

If this does happen and the Celtics end up winning, get ready for the * to be placed next to that 09 title Laker fans.

The hype will be unbearable if the Lakers face the Celtics … better not be more than 5 days in between, the wait between games is too long

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton
  • chingy

Be careful what you wish for Lakers fans; also, who else thinks this playoffs has been one of the least competitive in recent memories? Seems like the only good series is Boston/Magic and Lakers/Thunder (and who would have thought that the playoff-rookie Thunder be Lakers’ toughest challenge?)

  • Jack Cooper

Fans Calling for Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals? I’m not,and nobody else is either. Its like watching the spurs back in the days,it gets old.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

IF the Lakers face the Celtics – main differences from 2008, in order of importance: Lakers have Home Court, improvement of Rondo, Ron Artest on Paul Pierce, Andrew Bynum playing (but still gimpy), Ray Allen shooting well before series, Rasheed Wallace, Gasol and Odom know what to expect in terms of physical play (whether they can do anything about it remains to be seen)…

  • Arek

Who the hell actually wanted the Suns in the final for reasons other than they don’t like the Lakers

  • Arek

    Jack Cooper..
All Lakers/Celtics fans are, and since those are the 2 teams that are going to advance to the finals, fans of other teams don’t matter

  • Arek

Jackie Moon you also forgot a Kobe seeking revenge

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

I’m a Lakers Fan, But did anybody cares about L.Barbosa?

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

@Arek – if winning isn’t motivation enough to win a cookie, there’s something wrong. The revenge angle is for writers and myth makers. Execution, practice, and attention to detail get it done , although revenge might help you put in that extra practice, it’s not going to help with the other two.

If you don’t want to watch Lakers vs. Celtics then I question your committment to good basketball.
The playoffs have shown these are the two best teams, easily. They both run beautiful offenses. They both can play incredible defense (although Boston is more consistent). They have stars and superstars on both squads, talented inside and outside play, good coaching.
I mean, what more could you ask for as a fan, even without the longstanding history involving the two teams.
You don’t want to see if Gasol recovers his nutsack when going against KG after Garnett unmmanned him in 2008? YOu don’t want to see if Odom can shine this time, intead of being nullified by Perkins? You’re not curious to see Pierce and Artest, who have bad blood, scare off in an epic battle? You don’t wnat to know if Rondo can continue to shine when Kobe guards him, or if he gets nullified like he did in 2008? Hell, you don’t want to see what happens if hte Lakers decided to put Fisher on Rondo and Kobe/Artest is forced to chase Ray Allen around all series with Allen’s stroke going?
Can the Celtics bench overwhelm the Lakers’? Will Nate Robinson get any tick?
I mean, damn, I want that series BAD. That’s a basketball fans dream. There is no way you can honestly say that it is a surefire victory for either team, and the series should go seven, easily.
That’s not boring to me at all. Far from it.

  • jorge

Many complaint about repetitiveness!! If you are a fan a basketball, you want to see one of the best players in Kobe vs 3 stars on the other team, defense, good passing and nastyness. If that doesn’t do it for you, then hope you recorded Atlanta vs Magic…to enjoy for years to come….Weak a****s teams.
The best of the best against eachother. I was at the laker game and I wasn’t one chanting “We want Boston”.
To be honest, Lakers playing Suns affects them. Weak kid fighing when the bigger kid awaits outside school.
If lakers pull it vs Boston, Kobe will gain my full respect next to Jordan.

  • http://banksitin.blogspot.com/ vmcb

I can’t root for either team. Ugh.

  • Logues

celtics baby yea! they takin it all again this yr! hope kg can get his much deserved finals mvp

  • J-Bird

C’s are coming to punk out these softy SoCal boys

  • jorge

Well hopefully the smaller kid can only be pushed around so many times!!!

  • Hangtime Hec

Co-sign Allenp THREE times. All I want is a entertaining finals. Thats it.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Somewhere Derek Fisher just woke up drenched in sweat and screaming ‘Rajon Rondo’.. My call; Celts in 7. Many interesting subplots: Imo Pierce will be living at the line going against Artest, the KG-Pau match-up, Bynum’s bum knee, will Kobe be playing mediocore like in ’08?, will LA’s weak bench hurt them?, will C’s miss Posey/Sam-I-Am too much?, Let’s get it on – love the prospect of a rematch.

  • Robb

Revenge!!! Honestly I’ll be more nervous than excited but bring it on!

  • LA Huey

    co-sign Hangtime Hec.

  • Bruno

co-sign allenp and jackie moon … it will be a different story but it will be a huge finals and way better than orlando-la or boston-phoenix or orlando-phoenix

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Boston is simply playing incredible defense. Should be an epic finals. Boston in six, kg finals mvp. Maybe rondo if he triple doubles

  • Conoro

    Lakers in 6.

  • Alex

Boston fans have become worse than New York fans, ugh

  • doyouwantmore

I’m so conflicted. I respect the Lakers execution and teamwork, but I can’t stand Laker fans. I love Boston’s dirt-dog gritty defense and the way Rondo has dismissed all his doubters, but the way KG, Baby, and a few other Celtics handle themselves makes me want to turn my TV off when they’re playing sometimes. I would have loved to have seen Magic and Suns in the finals. Celtics/Lakers is like watching the two biggest a&&holes on the block beat each other up, but it’s such a good fight you have to watch. I guess I’m rooting for the old weathered Celtics, for Ray Allen more than anyone else. Yes, Allenp the two teams who make it to the finals are the most deserving, but the fans of other franchises deserve better.

  • James

Celtics VS Lakers finals? That would mean a whole summer of Celtics and Laker fans bickering like schoolgirls on Basketball forums and Basketball videos on Youtube. No thanks. C’mon Magic and Suns!
