Inside Eddy Curry’s Debt Woes

Curry can’t afford to pay his bills, and has defaulted on a large personal loan. The NY Post has the details: “Knicks center Eddy Curry defaulted on a $570,000 personal loan while keeping up a lifestyle that included a $17,000-a-month suburban New York home, a $6,000-a-month personal chef, and a dozen cars he’d bought for himself and relatives, a judge said. Friday, a Manhattan court ordered Curry to pay $75,000 a month to lender Allstar Capital Inc. to resolve a debt that swelled to $1.2 million with interest. The court also has issued an order letting Las Vegas-based Allstar seize three of the cars: a Rolls Royce Phantom convertible and two Land Rover SUVs, all 2009 models. Lawyers for both Curry and Allstar said Monday they were headed toward a settlement that would make the order moot. They wouldn’t disclose terms. Curry’s lawyer, Mercedes Colvin, would say only that she believed the two sides had reached ‘a mutually satisfactory resolution of the matter.’ Curry earned $10.5 million this season and is scheduled to make $11.3 million next season in the final year of his contract. But the former No. 4 pick in the NBA Draft has been dogged by financial and legal problems in recent years.”

Reading The Philosopher and Tarzan arguing is pretty much the anti-special olympics. No one wins.

I’m sorry, but 85% income rate sounds absolutely mind booglingly illegal. That’s usery right there. I have to read up on this.

Agreed. And I was going to say that before… no way the 85% thing is legal, right??

Okay, here’s the skinny: This isn’t a bank, but some sort of private organization that loaned him this money, so it avoids federal laws and limitations. The only Allstar Capital Inc I can find is one that’s based in China, and its main purpose is to sponsor gigantic business organizations— so I guess it’s plausible that he took a loan from an American branch of this corporation, even though that’s not REALLLLLY the company’s purpose.
    Still seems like usury, though!
Not in Nevada— apparently there are NO LIMITATIONS on interest rates in loans… any other state, this thing would be illegal and thrown out of court, but the home of Las Vegas can apparently get away with something like this. Either Curry took out a loan from a Nevada branch of this international organization, or there’s some sort of high-interest private loan operation going on in Nevada with the same name. Either way, I can’t fathom how bad Curry’s credit is that he had to get a loan from a shady organization on the other side of the US. At least they just took his cars legally and didn’t break his legs.
Curry’s “excuses” as to why he can’t pay his money are pitiful… his claims is that he can’t pay back the loan because of his other financial needs… which, unfortunately, isn’t really a legal excuse; more like justification for bankruptcy, which Curry isn’t doing (and at this point would probably be the smartest thing to do, to try and freeze the interest).
BONUS INFO: one of the ‘expenses’ he has is a 350,000 bill to Juwan Howard… unexplained… surreal, right?

Actually the debt was in Vegas and 85% is unfortunately legal. However he makes enough it should of been paid off not allowed to increase substantially. Soon he will be featured at Burger Jpint close to you as the star flipper.
