Joe Dumars: ‘You Learn from Losing’

Joe D addressed his Pistons’ recent failures, and looked ahead to the not-too-distant future. From the Free Press: “Dumars spoke of how disappointing the 27-55 season was but said it was a learning experience in many ways. ‘You just don’t learn from winning,’ Dumars said. ‘You learn from losing as well. And what we’ve learned is that we’re more committed now than ever before to maintain our core values and not get away from that and not have the type of slippage that you saw this year.’ He also offered broad support for first-year coach John Kuester and said that he is committed to not allowing the possible sale of the franchise to become a distraction. Asked about the futures of longtime Pistons Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince, Dumars didn’t address them specifically. Instead, he cited the remaining NBA playoff teams as proof of the need for solid veterans. Dumars noted that he didn’t see enough intensity this year. ‘We had some slippage in terms of the toughness and grit that we’ve had for the last 10 years,’ he said. ‘We drifted some from what we were when we were successful.’ Dumars has several ways to change that, starting with the No. 7 pick that Detroit received in last week’s NBA draft lottery.”

Hey, what happened to all the folks out there that said the Bulls were stupid for letting Ben Gordon go to the Pistons, and that they’d finish second in the Central Division behind Cleveland?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com TADOne

I’d rather win and be stupid.

I wanted to make a joke about the Clips or Wolves about losing but the Pistons really screwed themselves up this year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Basically they overpaid 2 players to come off the bench…

Like Enigmatic said, ‘Where all the B. Gordan fans at?’

  • snasty10

Im not a Gordon fan, but he was hurt or battling injuries for most of the year and we never really had a chance to see what he could do. Hopefully he has a better second year.

  • underdog

Damn, the Clips must be than the smartest bball team on the globe.

Trade #7 and Tayshaun Prince to Philly for #2 and Brand. Get a franchise player in Evan Turner and go from there.

I’m pretty sure the Bulls with a healthy Ben Gordon would be better than they are now…Injuries had alot to do with his horrible season. Still very overpaid though.

Yeah, the Bulls would’ve been better with Gordon this past season, but we wouldn’t be a player in the free agent extravaganza this summer.

Tadone would rather win and be stupid, he must be a Cleveland fan. You don’t become a champion through stupidity Dumars knows this that’s why he has three rings. I am a Ben Gordan fan and yall will understand why when he’s busting your asses next season. Underdog, the Clips? don’t start comparing my team to the Clippers cause of a couple bad years get real. No Wayno you don’t get Turner if you’re the Pistons, we need bigs man! Dumars signed two DEPENDABLE CONSISTENT scorers last year to increase the offensive production and depth of the team, whether or not they start. Don’t worry, yall will understand the game of basketball one day.

I agree with Terry — Ben Gordon is going to come out and light it up next season. Take a look at the first few Pistons games when Gordon was healthy and comfortable. He shot a ridiculous percentage and scored a lot of points. That’s what he’s been able to do his whole career and that’s what he’ll continue to do in Detroit.

That being said, I want Cousins some how, some way.

Ok people…you don’t build a team around Ben Gordon, he’s a one trick pony…he’s very good at that one trick, but still, he’s a complimentary player. As of right now Detroit does not have a single player good enough to build a contender around and the days of 5 above average role players playing together to win a chip are done in Detroit. While there are alot of quality bigs in this draft, I don’t think there are more than one or two you could build around, and I don’t know who that would be. Evan Turner is about as close as you can get to a sure thing when it comes to the NBA draft. He can score, rebound, distribute, and defend at an NBA level from day 1 and he’s going to get better. He’s the kind of player you build around and that’s what Detroit needs.

I say we trade one of our players to Philly for Sam Dalemburt. He averaged 8 points and almost 10 rebounds playing just half of the game. If Big Ben decides to retire I’d say he would be a safe bet to make a trade for.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

wayno, as good as that sounds, I just don’t think Philly is going to want to give up the chance to draft Turner.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Y’all talk Gordon up like the “g” and second “o” should be switched to a “j” and an “a”. Trust, he played for my Bulls for 5 years and he was a good scorer and pretty clutch, but his negatives outweigh his positives. Y’all enjoy him in Detroit, though. I’m happy with my squad, and we got some more help coming this summer, believe it.

Philly has reportedly been shopping the pick actually. If it can get them out of Brand’s terrible contract I think they’d at least consider it. I’m not saying it’s ver likely, but financially it makes sense for them.If they were to bite on that they’d get Prince’s expiring contract, get rid of Brand’s horrible contract + have a chance to get a good big with the #7 pick. Maybe a pipe dream, but a man can dream can’t he?

I hope bulls get jack in free agency, just so all thes bulls fans can go cry again. Ben was hurt alot, dint get many minutes, fluke of a season for him. Who said his negs outweigh his positives? If it wasnt for him they would have been swept by the celtics. Pistons team doesnt fit. Has stuckey improved at all? He looks the same to me

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

LOL, no way will the Bulls walk away empty-handed from free-agency. This isn’t 2000, where we had Elton Brand and no one else worth mentioning (Artest wasn’t that great just yet). I’m sure some superstar out there would love to play with Rose, Noah, Deng, Gibson and Hinrich. And Bulls management obviously felt Gordon’s negatives outweigh his positives, otherwise you really think they wouldn’t have dealt Hinrich for an expiring contract so they could keep Gordon and still have money for free-agency?

It’s amazing to watch the progression of these comments and then see the tangents spreading from them. From toughness on the Pistons to the effectiveness of BG to the Bulls chances in free agency. It’s also amazing to hear Joe Dumars reflecting all of the blame on to the players after a woeful season caused by his poor off-season signings and deals. He was the master of defence in the late 80′s and it’s good to see he can still defend. Himself that is.

You learn not to waste your high draft pick on Darko Milicic.
