Kobe Bryant’s Wife Makes Immigration Law Statement

Kobe’s coach may not want sports teams to get politically involved, but Vanessa made sure to address the controversial immigration law in Arizona at the Lakers/Suns game last night. The OC Register has more: “The wife of Kobe Bryant wore a black t-shirt to Monday’s game with the words ‘Do I Look Legal?’, a clear reference to Arizona’s controversial immigration law. Vanessa Bryant, who is part Hispanic, wore the shirt on the game night that approximately 40 demonstrators rallied against Lakers coach Phil Jackson for refusing to criticize Arizona’s new immigration law.”

Give me discernible evidence that proves all cops will abuse their powers. I can give you discernible evidence that 100% of illegal immigrants are breaking the law. Plain and simple illegal immigrants are breaking the law. You are a criminal justice student right Enigmatic? Well tell me where in your book does it say that someone that is breaking the law and is caught does not have a punishment pending for them. I will get a tramp stamp of your face if you can show me this in one of your law books.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The point is The Arizona Law is not new. Its already a Federal Law that is not ENFORCED>>>> Every FEDERAL Police Officer in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is allowed to do the exact same thing every cop in arizona is allowed to do on july 29th. Be legal and have nothing to worry about. And if you think this law is what makes cops act in a stereotypical fashion you are ignorant to how the world works and aren’t worth explaining anything too

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

and as a “criminal justice student” (i too have taken criminal justice classes but i don’t call myself a criminal justice student) you should know that some laws that are not enforced federally have to be adopted on a state level to prevent economic collapse or any other kind of negative effect on its legal citizents. Like the loss of healthcare and low-budget housing opportunities that are being STOLEN by illegal immigrants

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Are you asking me for specific cases where an illegal act was committed and the accused was not punished? Like Mirdana V. Arizona? What does this have to do with my point? I already said Illegal Immigration is wrong, clipsfan, and OBVIOUSLY illegal. Try and keep up.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@Chiqo…Yeah, I saw that. But I said it.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I concede to your point about states having to enforce federal laws if the federal government does not, my issue with this isn’t the fact that Arizona passed a law, it’s the law itself. And I don’t think this law will suddenly cause cops to be stereotypical, I just think that it will give cops who are already like that more ammo.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Check this out, nbk, you raise some valid points, as I feel I did as well. I respect you for not attacking me on a personal level or turning this into an internet thug showdown. We’re obviously not going to convince the other, and having hit a stalemate I’m just going to agree to disagree with you and call it a day.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I am with you on the ammo comment. I just think if the Federal Government is going to ignore something that affects every person in one of its states then its the states responsibility to come up with a solution. And I am not totally behind this law, I am just supporting doing SOMETHING about the illegal immigration. It might be a little bias in my support because I work in a field where Illegal Immigrants can and do hurt the economy in a big way. If you have a suggestion to cut immigration without involving the federal government that you can logically support over this new law then i will write a personal letter to jan brewer every week in support

  • lupe

NOT A DAMN THING WRONG WITH THAT LAW. When I used to buy blunts, they asked for my ID, over and over and over again. Im 30, I just showed my ID and BOOM, blunts in hand. Same with beer, or getting into a club. Show ID, your good. No proper ID, get out. STOP CRYING!!!!!!!!!!!! Soft-ass sissys

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

so is it right to go unpunished. If you want to keep up why don’t you stop filibustering around the main reason why there is support for this law (and the main reason that people who are pro Arizona are pointing out)? We keep on mentioning financial reasons: Arizona has a budget crisis, there are plenty of reasons for this. One of the reasons is illegal immigration. Is it really fair to punish those who are legal immigrants and citizens of this country by taking away social services provided by the government; all the while there is little to no reduction on government spending when it comes to illegal immigrants? Don’t you believe that making it merely more inconvenient for an illegal immigrants to be in (or come to) Arizona will make illegals want to leave or just not emigrate there at all. Thus, this will lead to less government spending on illegal immigrants in Arizona and more spending on legal immigrants and current citizens.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Im white, and have been racial profiled by cops because I was driving in a black area (hood) and my friend was black. So automatically, hes a drug dealer and im a buyer. Ive been pulled over a few times in that same way. they cuffed and searched us for no reason, were insanely rude, tried to get us to react, so they could charge us with something. Cops doing what they want is nothing new. Sihts been happening. With that said what are all these better, more effective solutions to illegal immigration ppl keep talking about? What are they? This is a doubly important issue because it is such a financial drain on our cities and states in a horrible economy. Education and other funding as been cut to try to solve illegal immigration. So, what can be done? I dont see this law hurting or helping, yea they might deport more, but they will just come right back. Herein lies the problem. I dont think there is a solution. No matter how u try to stop them or send them back, they keep coming.

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

Enigmatic like I already stated about your profiling point. IF cops choose to profile that is a statement of the individual cops themselves, not the law at hand. I have already stated that the federal policies on immigration are completely outdated. Also, the main reason why illegal immigration was overlooked is because people had Americans had fat wallets. Now that every American’s wallet is getting thinner, the handouts have to stop somewhere. Although I’m not huge on social services, deadbeat Americans deserve American paid social services. Also, those that are allowed to be here in this country by American law is also deserving of social services due to them being here legally. The fat has to be cut somewhere, and if push comes to shove the ones that should be left out from social services are illegal immigrants. Alas, there is no reduction on government spending on illegal immigrants

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

onlyclipsfan- You said “Is it really fair to punish those who are legal immigrants and citizens of this country by taking away social services provided by the government” The point I’m trying to make is that legal immigrants will be punished no matter what. Just try to put yourself in my shoes. I’m Mexican by birth but I’m here legally and served my country (because, make no mistake, I AM an American) and a law like this just makes me feel like a second-class citizen. How would you feel if your mere appearance made people suspicious of you committing a crime? You can say, just show them your papers and everything will be fine. But who wants to be treated that way? Seriously?

  • jorge

I know of a happy, happy place where they don’t check for ID, the military when serving this country.
ummm…I almost forgot and the IRS…..damn I almost forgot….I wonder why that is!!!!ummmmm.

  • Ace

The border states should just get together and build a nice big and fat wall on the border with security features. Until that happens they are gonna keep coming across that border. This all goes for border states in the north b/c there are some areas where you can go around a checkpoint to into this country.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

And before the game startd, I saw her shirt and thought she was trying to be cute like am I over 18? I thought yea, u look over 30 legal. Somewhere in louisiana karl is operating heavy machinery and is oblivious to all this

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

they did start building a wall. but obama thought it was a waste of money. SO he gave AIG enough money to give every citizen in the us a MILLION dollars instead. and that helped a bunch lmao

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

onlyclipsfan, I am WITH you on the illegal immigration tip, homie. I know we gotta cut that fat, and the handouts to those who aren’t even here legally need to stop. I agree. Alls I’m saying is, this law alienates those of us that are here legally. That’s it. That’s my only beef. It’s a tiny beef, but a beef nontheless.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

What are you getting at with your post, jorge? I served in the Marines and they checked my immagration status. And I had no problem with that. Check your facts, bro.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I won’t even dignify lupe’s posts with a response. Except for this one.

  • Ace

That’s why the states need to get together for the wall, b/c of states right they wouldn’t need the federal govnt to do so.

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

Anyways… It is good to know that there are still hoop heads that care about important issues such as politics. The outlook of this country’s future isn’t so bleak as I might make it out to be. I just hope that if someone who has no idea about this subject and wants to learn more actually researches it first and makes their own opinion. It can differ from mine, but there is just too much misinformation out there on this subject.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The thing about basketball is that it’s so universal that a site like SLAM is bound to get a bunch of people up in here with different backgrounds and varying opinions on political issues. But I gotta applaud the fact that most of us commentators on here can keep it civil.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Keep in mind, the people of this country are the target. Whos pointing the gun? Politickians and the behind th scenes ppl who really run things. Ick cheneys, karl roves, bilderbergers, council on foreign relations, etc. The govt is not for the people, it is for profit for a few ppl. Billions for endless pointless wars, billions for insane bailouts to the culprits. They want us in disorder, they want us divided, they want us arguing over non political ‘issues’ like gays and abortion. They want us distracted

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

    @Lupe. Moron.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Anyways what the wall really gonna do but keep people in. If someone wants to get here, a 15-20 foot wall aint gonna stop them. But if everyone wanted to get out then there would be an issue.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I said my piece on Arizona’s law on the other thread, so I won’t repeat what I wrote.
I’ll say this, until you have experienced racial profiling first hand, you really don’t comprehend what it means. Until you’ve had a gun pulled on you by a cop convinced you are a threat possibly worth killing, you don’t get it.
Anything that encourages racial profiling for anybody is not worthy of my support. Because racial profiling is not based on “facts” or the “truth” it’s based on fear, and typically it’s used by people with power against those without it.
Arizona’s law does NOT legalize racial profiling. It just encourages it. It just makes it easier for it to occur.
And apparently some folks are ok with that sacrifice. Probably because it’s not a sacrifice being borne by them. You reap what you sow.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Racial Profiling happens without this law. I live in phoenix, most my friends are of a different race and guess what? The cops are not going to change how they treat anyone. They already profile everyone. Now they are just allowed to ask questions which apparently is unconstitutional. They can’t just arrest you for being mexican, if you have ID of any kind then you are free to walk after saying “yes officer here is my identification.”
Things like this are worth protesting over? How about the atrocities in Darfur? Oh wait that isn’t happening on the same land mass so you people think this is more important. Go protest something that effects you personally. Not something that will only negatively effect illegals and those to stupid to follow a simple law like have some form of identification on you at all times. Which is already in the constitution.

  • trux

I must confess beforehand that i come from the uk so not hugely informed about us/arizona fiscal policy as regards social welfare, but if you are an illegal immigrant how do you go about getting welfare without the required documentation?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

HEY, HAS ANYONE FORGOTTEN THAT NONE OF US SPEAK IROQUOIS, NAVAJO, OR APACHE?? Someone mentioned the irony–this is the irony, we are ALL immigrants to this land, some came voluntarily while others were forced, but NONE of us are “native”. Puhleeze!

  • http://Yahoo.com 323 356 9658

I have a huge Dick so I’m not worried

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Cheryl, no one on this planet is ‘native’ except a couple folks around the great rift valley

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Check it: This law is in DIRECT VIOLATION of the fourth amendment. Any Republican who supports this bill is, in fact, in support of violating the constitution. There is NO WAY a police officer can determine if someone is illegal without racial profiling, which is ‘unreasonable search and seizure without probable cause.’
    End of the argument.
I’d rather put land mines at the border than continue this law.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

NBK is being awful here. “Cops are going to profile anyway, might as well make it legal”
    GREAT!~ God bless American thinking.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

We might as well make all legal ‘citizens’ wear sombreos and ponchos to go along with their ‘papers,’ you know, to differentiate them so they don’t keep getting pulled over. This law is f’in pitiful and all you white guys who are saying “IF YER NOT MEXICAN YOU CAN”T COMPLAIN” you are below low. Not even kidding.

  • MikeC.

I saw a very interesting show on National Geographic TV about the mapping of the human genome. The show, using DNA tracing, implied that every single human on our planet can have their lineage traced back to a group of people in Southeast Africa. This group splintered into several groups that traveled all over Africa and the Middle East, eventually populating what is now Europe, Asia and Russia(I need a geography major to let me know if Russia is considered to be in Asia or Europe). At that time, among other points in history, there was a land bridge connecting the Russia to what is now Alaska. People who had been roaming and living in Siberia wandered across the land bridge to North America, eventually spreading all the way to the Southern tip of South America. So, based on the Human Genome mapping, I guess I’m saying that nobody is illegal. Or everyone is illegal. I forget what my point was supposed to be. Celts-Magic is distracting me.

  • MikeC.

I think JJ Redick is an illegal. Check his papers.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

Jukai ur the man. I’d bet nbk prolly didn’t have anything against waterboarding either, whatever it takes to get the job done. Just the same sort of dissconnect that happened after 911. When people like NBK made an exception while Bush used the patriot act as to illegally spy on AMERICANS of middle eastern descent . And set in motion a climate of fear and discrimination against these mostly peaceful and wonderful people.Pathetic. Its like a disease. That was illegal, as well as a violation of this countrys constitution. But that was different… I also find it humorous that NBK thinks he’s somehow more informed because he’s from AZ. Lmao, dude ur in loser denial. I am glad however to read the comments of Slamers of ALL RACES who won’t turn thier back on a fellow man.

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

Arizona Immigration law in a nutshell, RACIST!!!

As an African American, I am well aware of the double standard of justice in AmeriKKa. The unprosecuted cases of racial profiling and police brutality has a long history within this nation. I’m zero tolerance on racial profiling. If AZ wants to end the flow of undocumented workers across the borders, punish those who employ these workers. There is probably less unemployment amongst this population than the general population. Likewise, AZ benefits economically from those undocumented workers dollars too!!!

Vanessa Bryant did the right thing by exercising her right to free speech.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Arizona is a sh!tty state masked behind a facade of sunny vacation sites. I’m glad I don’t live in that sad f*ck of a state.
And what about the law banning all “cultural studies,” or how teachers who speak with ACCENTS are no longer allowed to teach in Arizona? What the f*ck do you call that?
Before, when cultural studies meant affirming European heritage, hey, the government was all for it. Now that its about teaching Spanish as a second to Latinos or letting THEM be proud of their heritage, it’s suddenly a threat to the f*cking country with the potential to “overthrow the US government?” Get the f*ck out of here.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Remember, to all those pseudo-righteous hypocrites complaining about immigration:
ALL OF US ARE EITHER IMMIGRANTS OR DESCENDANTS OF IMMIGRANTS. NOT ONE OF US ARE NATIVE TO THIS LAND.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Teddy: Well, it’s not like segregation of immigrants is a new thing. In Ontario new immigrants’ qualifications might as well count for nothing for the most part. You could be a surgeon or an accountant, and it isn’t recognized. I had a friend from Egypt whose father had to sit through medical school again just so he could practice in Ontario.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Teddy: So yeah, the passing of this law is getting a lot of attention because of how visible its impact is. I agree with what you and a lot of guys here say. I also think that the red tape preventing immigrants from doing as well as “locals” do goes a lot deeper.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@nbk: Darfur? Here’s the thing: if we can’t fix racism in our own backyard, in our own heartland, in this day and age, do we have the right to go into someone else’s continent and reprimand them for their wrongdoings?

  • Ace

People should have saw this coming a mile away. They did it in Europe with Arabs, Persians, and Africans (that didn’t come from countries with EU relations already.) Now only diff is that certain states are going to follow suit. @Cheryl Everyone in this country is not a true immigrant thats not a Native American. You can’t even include blacks in that conversation b/c they didn’t want to come here in the first place. This law is probably here to stay, look up the Patriot Act b/c under that what Arizona is doing is A-ok! Why aren’t people protesting the Patriot Act then?

  • MikeC.

I’m truly glad I came back to SLAMONLINE in the last couple of months. The level of discourse is fantastic. We talk regularass noise when it comes to bball opinions, but get into actual (factual studies) debates over social issues. Some people make some pretty boneheaded statements (myself included) from time to time, but overall the back and forth is very interesting. I’ve certainly worked the Google on my Internet machine checking out points made by other posters. I don’t agree with some stuff that’s been said, but every point is a chance to check out a different perspective and learn something new. Thanks to all.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Teddy: You’re from Toronto, right? I don’t know if this link will make it through the filter, but here goes: http://www.thestar.com/news/ontario/article/796931–complaints-overwhelm-human-rights-watchdog

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Teddy: Okay, so my last comment didn’t get through. Anyway, search for “toronto star complaints overwhelm human rights watchdog” and read that article. Beneath our most multicultural of cities, there is a stronger undercurrent of racism than we’d like to admit.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

The funny thing is, Mexico has their own serious illegal immigration problem, and they deal with immigrants on their own southern border much more harshly than America does. I am 100% against anything that leads to racial profiling or even hints at giving police more authority, but the people protesting the AZ law need to come up with a sensible alternative too. Maintaining the status quo is not going to work.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Jukai your flat out ignorant and mindlessly reading what I’m saying. Cops are going to stereo type regardless of this law it is not ok – but the law only stipulates that an officer can ask for identification under a suspiscious circumstance. They can’t walk into the f’n grocery store and ask every dark skinned person in the building to line up with their id’s. They can’t arrest you on supiscon of anything. It is already in our NATIONS CONSTITUTION that a person must have some form of identification unless said person is attached by law to a specific gaurdian. Your assuming bs is your own problem. Stay out of situations you don’t fully understand.
