Lakers/Jazz Game 1 Recap

Kobe Bryant does his best LeBron James impersonation.

by Sean Ceglinsky

The modest chants of MVP, MVP, MVP, began in the upper section of seats at Staples Center during the second quarter of Sunday’s game between the Jazz and Lakers.

Seconds later, everyone sitting in the middle section joined in.

And once those with floor seats decided to get involved, the noise reached a fevered pitch. The house was rocking, indeed, and the adulation was for Kobe Bryant, of course.

Don’t these people know, do these fans have any clue, that the NBA recently announced LeBron James as the most valuable player of the most famous League around?

Guess not.

Kobe BryantWhatever the case, Bryant fed off the crowd’s undeniable energy and there was nothing that the Jazz could do about it. He played well from start to finish, scoring 31 points in a 104-99 victory in the opening game of the Western Conference semifinals.

“Well I felt that he put the game on his shoulders,” Phil Jackson said about Bryant to a large contingent of media personalities during the post-game news conference.

As for Kobe himself, he had plenty to say about how he thought he performed in his 36-plus minutes of action. For those interested in listening, simply click here.

Truth be told, the effort couldn’t have come at a better time.

After Kobe struggled, at times, against the upstart Thunder in their previous series, questions began surfacing about whether Bryant had, perhaps, lost a step or two.

Moreover, skepticism grew about whether the Lakers, maybe, just maybe, were going to have some serious trouble successfully defending their NBA Championship.

Bryant did his best keep the detractors quiet by coming out and going 5-5 en route to 10 points in the first 12 minutes to give the Lakers a 30-23 lead at the end of one.

It was more of the same the rest of the way, particularly late in the fourth quarter when the Lakers needed him most against a Jazz team, led by Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, that managed to cut into the Los Angeles lead and make things interesting.

Over the final four minutes of play, Bryant scored 11 of the Lakers’ 15 points to ruin any hopes the Jazz might have had at stealing a game in sunny Southern California.

“We put ourselves in a bit of a hole in the fourth quarter and let them gain all the momentum,” Bryant said afterward. “At that point, we just got to buckle down. It’s tough to change momentum when it’s that late in the game.”

Apparently, it’s tough for some. That is, unless your name is Kobe Bean Bryant.

All told, he was 12-19 from the field. At the free-throws line, Kobe knocked down all seven of his attempts. Bryant added four assists and three rebounds, for good measure.

Not a bad day at the office.

At least not bad in the eyes of the Laker faithful.

To them, Kobe will always be MVP.

“Kobe Bryant does his best LeBron James impersonation.”

    You kidding me right?????

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

Yeah, even I’m borderline offended by that headline. Nice work.

  • mems

    i dont get the headline…kobe has rings…..

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    LeBron won Finals MVP too?

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

CJ Miles, CJ Miles, CJ Miles. If you had only played like a man instead of flopping 38 times you could have shaven down Kobe’s 31 at least by around… 11 points. Instead you buckled in a Will & Grace-like manor every time you saw a hip or forearm coming your way. If you play Anti-Mike straight up at this point of his career, you’ll have a much better chance. Think about it ‘eh?

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

And somebody who has ANY access to Kobe or the Staple Center to PLEASE tell him to stop doing that “bottom teeth” thing. I understand that he’s focused and intense.. But he kills my celebration of a nice move or an impossible shot made whenever he makes that face. “OH SH%T! Whata move! Yo, Kobe’s on fi.. Oh never mind.”

  • kobesbestfriend

Lebron is having Shaq win games for him…Kobe hasnt done that in 6 years!!!

  • Kas

That headline is the dumbest ever, and you guys have had some terrible headlines. The fact that James has more mvps than Kobe is, to me, unbelieveable.

  • riggs

can somebody snuff kobe in his mouth so it can return to its original form?

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

I’m quite disappointed that there hasn’t been a post on his Good Humor Man impersonation.

  • http://nba.com Reflex

Here’s what I think of this bullshit headline

Lebron James Impersonation? I dont agree. 4 rings to 0. Proven winners dont impersonate people who havent won yet. Maybe you could have said Michael Jordan. But Lebron….not so much.

  • http://slamonline.com Sean Ceglinsky

@Myles Brown, your right, Kobe is the reigning MVP. That is, reigning Finals MVP, something LeBron can’t claim. Maybe it’s just me, but I think the torch has been passed onto LBJ. Suppose we’ll see if Bryant ends up proving me, along with the other naysayers, wrong.

  • http://nba.com Reflex

‘Kobe does his best LeBron impersonation’
You mean he got dunked on by a kid in high school?

  • namik

Myles that photo shoot is hilarious( and a bit embarrassing for Laker fan). I have no idea what Kobe was thinking. Btw, we are talking about the same thing right?

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    Yes. Yes we are. Sigh….

  • http://nba.com Reflex

    ^^^
Sean, when/once LeBron wins a chip then the torch can be said to have been passed, prior to that occuring, such talk is null & void. imo.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

He looked like a gay Alice In Wonderland or Spy vs Spy character. Sheesh….

Oh and @Sean, I guess well see. A title for Kobe over Bron would truly cement his legacy and one for Bron over Kobe is just as necessary to establish his reign.

  • http://slamonline.com Sean Ceglinsky

    @Reflex, good point. I ain’t mad atcha.

  • MattM

    what is this Kobe photoshoot?

  • vtrobot

@ spaceship: ha ha. i think kobe needs braces and probably even full head gear by this point. he wasn’t really doing the jaw jutting until KG started doing it a couple years ago. thankfully, KG has stopped that annoying habit, despite continuing with many others that cause much hate. maybe kobe is doing his best bron impersonation. bron borrowed that powder throwing from KG, right? i just hope i get to see mamba grab his balls too early in a playoff loss. i think mamba’s learned his lesson on that.

  • A.

Maybe, just maybe, if the Cavs beat the Lakers then you can say the Cavs are the best team in the L. But one team beating the other does not reflect whether LeBron is a better player than Kobe. I mean winning the championship is a team achievement no? Not because LeBron’s team hasn’t won means he can never be better individually than Kobe. When Orlando beat Cleveland last year, does that mean that LeBron wasn’t the best player on the court? Is it a sin for a player to be considered the best individually and not have a championship under his belt?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

The Kobe face is one of the worst additions to the NBA since Shawn Bradley.

  • Robb

When i saw the title I imagined Kobe dancing like an idiot or talking about himself in the third person during an interview. And about the MVP chants? He’s the finals MVP, and that’s way better than being the regular season MVP. Get a clue Ceglinsky.

  • givard

“doing his best lebron impersonation”?! wtf?! so kobe is “on fire” “putting the team on his back”? call me a hater if u want, but he had less points, less assist, less rebounds than James _AVERAGE_ for the playoffs… keep dreaming kobe lovers but lebron is so far ahead of kobe right now it’s almost unfair to even compare…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

The Kobe All white photoshoot was the wack. Sure it’s nice to make a statement when you’re a celeb, but… that’s… just… wack.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Passing it to yourself doesn’t count as an assist.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

@ Myles; I was.. I was even a little offended as a black man by that photo shoot. Not to get “racial” or anything, but those pics just didn’t feel right to me.

  • KulchaKris

Co-sign Miles and Spaceship. The pics are disturbing to say the least.

  • http://brimartin13@gmail.com Brion

I love seeing all these Laker fans lose their sh*t over a stupid headline.

  • kudos

Did Kobe miss a left-handed free throw, while crying in agony from the pain in his right hand?

  • Joe_Sixpack

Man I swear that the entire NBA is on Lebrons meat, kobe should`ve had at least three MVPs by now

  • C.B

Man slam, get off lebron’s balls.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

    http://www.latimesmagazine.com/2010/05/kobe-white-hot.html
Nah, Kobe took these photos. These are worse than any faking Lebron has EVER done.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

I have posted a link to the infamous photoshoot, it’s coming out of moderation soon.
I will say that looking at those pictures and reading the article that went with them confirms that Kobe is so far ahead of Lebron on the “diva” scale, that it doesn’t even make sense to discuss the two.

  • Sarah

I’m sorry, I don’t have anything to say about the game or the recap. But Kobe has got to stop making that jacked out jaw face. Too much.

  • Logues

agree with Sarah. whats the point of it? to get attention and have announcers talk about it and make a big deal out of nothing, and now bron all the sudden has some stupid a** look on his face now too? these dumb faces are supposed to help them win chips? haha stupid.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

“Yeah you Kobe (Lebron) haters, you guys should stop *insert homoerotic verb* Lebron’s (Kobe’s) *insert reproductive organ*.” Really, is that what the Kobe/Lebron debate has turned into? Not one post on either goes by without a couple of these lazy vanilla insults.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Allenp: Wow. What is with the hat? And he looks really… weird in the 2nd one especially.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Hey, MJ has the tongue wag. Mutombo has his finger thing. If Kobe does this fired up jaw thing enough maybe a whole generation of kids will start doing it all over playgrounds around the world! Joy.

  • Sarah

lol @ Joel O, yeah can’t wait for that. The severe underbite thing is just really not a good look for him. He looks like Bubba from Forrest Gump on the homepage.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

The picture with the hat and sweatband is without a doubt the worst picture of all time by a basketball player. If TNT had any balls, Charles and the gang would ROAST Kobe for this. But, they don’t.

  • The Philosopher

@Allenp: He looks like Raiden from MORTAL KOMBAT.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Sarah: Haha, he does look like Bubba. Shrimp kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo…

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Spy vs Spy I tell you!

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Allenp: The last two photos are all right. But what did the photog instruct him in the 2nd one? “Put on your biggest douchebag smirk?” And the 3rd and 4th one has him in a… low cut v-neck with a shawl, what the heck?

  • Sparker

kobe as an amish farmer, kobe as an egyptian peasant, kobe as lawrence of arabia. truly the weirdest sports photo shoot of all time

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

    Myles FTW!
That’s exactly what he looks like! Good call.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Allenp

I think, maybe, they were going for some sort of desert warrior look with the shawl thing, only the massive amount of makeup and the manicure made it more “coy milkmaid” than “brave warrior.”
Seriously, that is the worst photo shoot ever.
Brad Long, Bodie, Myles, y’all got a lot of explaining to do.

  • Sarah

    lmao @ “coy milkmaid” hahaha
