Lakers/Suns Game 4 Recap

Silly rabbit; benches are for the regular season.

by Dennis Tarwood / @tuffyr

WE THE ASSEMBLED

The Phoenix Suns Basketball Club

DO HEREBY APOLOGIZE

- to the Los Angeles media and fan base for winning Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals of these 2010 NBA Playoffs 115-106 Tuesday night and delaying the coronation of the Los Angeles Lakers Basketball Club for one week by taking the series to a 2-2 tie.

- to the Los Angeles media (again) for distracting them from the previously unbroken litany of questions peppered at Phil Jackson about his likely employer for next season by forcing them to compose questions about the series at hand.  (Your update for Game 4: Jerry Reinsdorf can make other plans for a coach; Mikhail Prokhorov can order up liquor for a future meeting. “I’d like to have a vodka with him at some point; he seems like a very interesting young man.”)

- to the rims at US Airways Center for once again abusing them with missed jump shots for the first and third quarters of Game 4, when primarily starting members of the Phoenix Suns Basketball Club shot a meager 16-for-45 (35.6%).

- to the nets at US Airways Center for finally abusing them with made jump shots, especially those worth three (3) points, while playing like the Phoenix Suns Basketball Club for the first time in the Western Conference Finals of these 2010 NBA Playoffs in the second and fourth quarters of Game 4, when primarily second unit members of the Phoenix Suns Basketball Club shot a masterful 25-for-39 (64.1%), including 10-for-20 from the area rewarded with three (3) points.

98764671CP008_Los_Angeles_L- to the second unit (“The Suns’ second unit is better than yours”™ Dennis Tarwood) of the Phoenix Suns Basketball Club for failing to call on them more consistently in the Western Conference Finals of these 2010 NBA Playoffs.  Alvin Gentry appeared to vacillate about this point before Game 4: “We’ll play the way we always play.  When a guy’s going good, we’ll leave him in the game.  If not, we stay with a standard rotation.”.  However, this was the same feint used when discussing the Phoenix Suns Basketball Club’s zone defense before Game 3 and should be recognized as such.  (Before Game 4: “We’ll either open in zone or man-to-man.”  True.)

We hope leaving all of them in during crunch time in the fourth quarter (until three minutes were left in the contest) signifies our intentions to resolve this moving forward.  Also, we hope Steve Nash referring to them as “efficient” helps; Nash loves efficiency.  He even does energy efficiency TV spots for the local electric monopoly.

- to Channing Frye, who nearly had his bullets whisked from him a la Barney Fife after missing his first two shots from the area rewarded with three (3) points and went on to successfully deposit four of his next six from said area.  “I jumped probably the highest I’ve ever jumped to shoot the next shot (after making the first),” Frye noted postgame. Indeed, some observers noticed separation between the soles of Frye’s shoes and the floor for the first time in ages Tuesday night.

- to Channing Frye (again), for that last jab about his athleticism.  This apology stuff is harder than we thought.

98764671RR066_Los_Angeles_L- to Goran Dragic (8/8/4 in 18 minutes), for forgetting how triple awesome sauce he was against the San Antonio Spurs Basketball Club and how his acrobatic aggression to the rim serves as the catalyst for the second unit.  “Dragic playing a pick-and-roll really hurt; (we) couldn’t stop it from getting into the lane and then (Goran) started driving and kicking and they made big shots on the kick outs,” Gasol said postgame.  Yeah; our bad.

Of course, fewer people forget Dragic off the court now, either; he’s being stopped more on the street, even on the road.  “It’s something new for me… I’m coming from Europe, so it’s a different culture,” Dragic acknowledged after the game. So maybe an apology for the notoreity?

- to Leandro Barbosa (14 points on 8 shots), for forgetting… well, you.  You struggled returning from the wrist injury this spring and patiently waited for a role to be carved out for you by Alvin Gentry.  Now?  “I think (my role) is pretty much what you see.  It’s not what I used to be; I used to have 30 minutes, you know.  Whatever minutes I have right now, I will try to do my best and come and play really hard, give some energy.”  We’ll remember that from now on.

- to Steve Nash (15/4/8 on 11 shots), for letting him get hit on the face again.  It doesn’t even look like a hittable face, y’know?  We’ll look into a football helmet or a force field or some such.

- to the celebrants and supporters locally of the Phoenix Suns Basketball Club for holding Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals of these 2010 NBA Playoffs essentially during business hours.  So sorry, but Time Warner doesn’t employ most of you and can demand such inconveniences.

98764671RR049_Los_Angeles_L- to you, dear viewer, for having to witness Alvin Gentry’s suit Tuesday night and knowing it is now one of his lucky suits, likely to reappear at a game you previously wanted to watch.

- to Craig Sager, for upstaging his suit.

- to you, dear reader, for failing to note that Phil Jackson is still coach of the Los Angeles Lakers Basketball Club at this point in the apology, despite inquiries implying the contrary.

- to Derek Fisher, for crumpling him under multiple screens yet again.  Having said that, this part of the apology may be muted since Betty White could drop him like a stone if she squared her shoulders.

98764671RR013_Los_Angeles_L- to Kobe Bryant (38/10/7 on 22 shots), for dragging him to the bottom of the Western Conference Finals pool under the sapping weight of the Kryptonite necklace known as his teammates.

- to said Los Angeles Lakers teammates of Kobe Bryant, for teasing 20 fouls out of them (and three out of Mr. Bryant) and another significant FTA disadvantage (32-13).  Sorry about making you reach.

- to the aforementioned Los Angeles Lakers teammates, for also using the secret Phoenix Suns Basketball Club zone defense to limit you to 43.4% from the field and a mere 13 FTA.  Also, for using the same zone to cause you to miss six of those free throws.  That was downright rude for a host.

- to Kobe Bryant (again), for angering him so fiercely about the previous action that he descended to a meta state that allowed him to use variations on the word “defense” nine (9) times while dripping with his own defensiveness for the entire four-minute press conference.  (Oh, and the word “ass” once.)

- to Kobe Bryant (once more), for forcing him into sarcasm when asked his mood after the game: “Jovial,” he deadpanned.  No one likes dry wit and sarcasm anymore, especially once converted to the written form and delivered to the public.

OTHER APOLOGIES

- from this writer to Vinny Del Negro, who was spotted in the media room pregame but did not receive sympathy or a slug or even a suggestion for an offensive rotation for his next squad.

- from this writer to the Suns fans, whose “Beat L.A.” chant flipped from bloodthirsty in Game 3 to joyous as Game 4 closed.

- from this writer to Phil Jackson, for not exploring his back channels more thoroughly.  Thankfully, other writers had their heads deep into this terrain Tuesday.

    Go Suns!

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Hey dennis, you left out one more aopology: “from this writer to the slamonline readers, for conjuring such a biased, hackneyed and gimmicky write-up that completely knocks the wind out of further discussion of the actual game, because apparently recaps should be done by retarded, glorified bullet points. Sorry.”

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Props to the suns though. LA played very well, compared to last game, but the FT line killed them. And someone should call off the search, channing frye’s been found.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Krishan, go to NBA.com for an actual recap. Enjoy the great writing.
    Fantastic show by the Suns.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

It’s nice to see the Lakers shoot under 40 ft’s in two games and the Suns shoot over 70 … and i swear when myself and all my co-workers were watching the game. A sniper entered the building and shot nash everytime someone got near him (mainly Fisher). 3 or 4 times I thought Nash went into anaphylactic shock, right there on the court. And I love Lopez and Amundson … no over the back ever.
    That is all.

good to see the suns make this a series. if the lakers don’t find a way to be effective against that zone, they could be in trouble.

  • Fut,

James the Balla is either (A) a Laker fan who is finally feeling how everyone else in the league has been feeling for the last decade or (B) a fan of neither but lacks the understanding of how dominant that zone was.

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

It will be interesting to see what Phil comes up with to beat this zone. Assuming that the Celts win in the East (ain’t over til it’s over), I’m sure that Doc and his staff are really paying attention to both how/why the Zone is so effective against the Lakers and how they will beat the Zone if they play the Suns. I’m impressed with how the suns have played and stuch by Frye, if he stays consistent and they beat the lakers, the finals will see another 7-10% drop in viewership on top of the decline due to LeBron already being out of it.

  • Kadavour

fack the zone, that zone had no answer for Kobe. His teammates refused to feed the hot hand. LA’s defense was HORRIBLE. Boston would NEVER give up 100+ to this PHX squad.

  • Karl

@Fut: He’s a laker’s fan(or a Kobe fan). Entertaining game and glad Frye got over his streak.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

    I don’t apologise to one of ya’ll d@mn fools.

  • Sparker

lakers seem out of answers, temporarily. fish had a hangdog look on the bench. artest seemed out of it (and took crap from both fish and kobe for fouling nash late). gasol looked frustrated in q4, bynum barely present throughout. walton actually appeared red in the face, probably from lack of burn, when they cut to him on the bench. farmar is making bad decisions too often, although at least he has his nose in there, unlike the rest of the non-existent supporting cast. not really worth commenting on the suns, since their game is speaking for itself. but i’m pretty damn impressed by the poise of southern gentleman, mr. alvin gentry. and yeah, one more thing: kobe bryant is the best player in the nba, and there’s no contest. i mean, good lord. i do not want the lakers to win this series, and i think it hurts his teammates to stand and watch too much, but he has never played better, as far as i can remember. passing, shooting the 3, making steals… all things that do not necessarily come to mind when talking about kobe… he’s doing it all, and with supreme grace.

  • Bruno

wait for the apologies after game 5

  • The D Train

Tremendous write-up Dennis. A great comedic start to my morning. Well done.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

60 attempted threes in two games, yeah the 2-3 zone sure isn’t working. It’s a legitimate b-ball strategy, Fakers. Why not try to beat it with penetration, spacing, rotation and passing? Oh yeah, you have Mr. “i got this” on your team. Here’s a thought, adjust, score at will then maybe your fans sneers and failure to grasp the obvious in these last two games would be slightly more validated.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Also i’m looking forward to the sequel: “How to tame your Dragic: Someone hide Fisher’s crowbar.”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Darksaber
Kobe is killing. The problem is that Lakers were intent on running sets, instead of recognizing that Kobe was unconscious and using him as the catalyst for hte rest of the team’s play. You can’t play zone AND double team one player every time he touches the ball. Lakers have to cut and make themselves available instead of camping out at the three. And when Kobe is feeling it GET HIM THE DAMN BALL EVERY TRIP DOWN!
Also, as I said on the other post, they must correct their pick and roll defense when Nash is out of hte game. There is no need to play Barbosa and Dragic the same way they play Nash with that aggressive hedge. It’s stupid.

  • GFlashner

im not GFlasher. his name and email showed up on my cpu. whoa. Slam, you said email wont be published? what the hell? this is crazy

  • vtrobot

amare shouldn’t just wear those DMC glasses during the press conference. he should wear them during the games with a pair of fresh croakees. nice job PHX. good team ball. i remember people talking about how dudley was a fairly important part of that trade. he’s become very valuable to PHX.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@darksaber– are you kidding me? Kobe was the only guy keeping them in it. He picked his spots to explode and played a great game at a high efficiency, while also trying to get his teammates involved. He played great and if not for him, that game was over in the 2nd quarter.

  • Dennis Tarwood

Apology duly issued to you, dear readers. Unfortunately, I don’t know what will crash and burn horrifically until the flames are already licking at the cockpit. Your advice will be taken into account for future Game Notes from me.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Tealish, co-sign.
I mena, he took a couple long jumpers that made me wince, but he was WETTING them, so it was no biggie.
He didn’t get enough touches or shots. Dude should be putting up the same numbers Jordan put up against the Suns in the Finals. He’s feeling it that much, but he’s not getting the proper touches.
I mean, he had 10 assists? He had more assists than NASH!

  • http://slamonline.com JL

32 to 13 FTs attempted. every time lakers would make a run the refs would stop them by either gifting the suns with foul shots or not calling fouls on the other end. i wish the refs wouldn’t mess with things cuz the suns woulda won the game all by themselves!

  • dsleepy

i gotta agree with krishan on this. i appreciate the attempt at being artful, i do. but this was a little overboard. the only reason i kept reading to the end was because i hoped at some point that the article would turn out to be an actual “Lakers/Suns Game 4 Recap” (as in, you know, the title). the “recap” is somewhere in here…beneath, around, (despite) all the extraneous filler. just a few points in this manner would’ve been humorous and clever. doing the whole piece in this fashion made it tiresome. i love this website and the magazine. i just expected a bit more from this, is all.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    JL… 100 percent co-sign.
It would be tough basketball for the Lakers on the offensive end. And then, if anyone if came close to Amundson and his fa&&ot ass ponytail, he would be at the line. Either don’t call fouls, or call them. This isn’t the WNBA, let BOTH teams play!!!

  • vtrobot

all the laker fans are taking it out on poor dennis.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

“And then, if anyone if came close to Amundson and his fa&&ot ass ponytail, he would be at the line.” James’s ignorance is without compare…or maybe he never has payed attention to the same “fa&&ot-ass” antics Pau and Fish pull every other possession. BTW….Kobe has no blame coming his way in their two losses, that’s silly.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Artest hates the back of the rim

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

lakers lost last night because of Phil. That lineup he started the 4th quarter with was awful. Kobe, Jordan, Shannon, Artest & Odom. Every time the suns doubled Kobe he would throw it to Jordan or Shannon and they would dribble around for 20 seconds before launching up a stupid shot. It’s the WCF, Gasol can rest later.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

haha, so when Lebron has a ludicrous near triple double statline during a loss, we have to blame him, cause he’s the leader… but when Kobe has a ludicrous near triple double statline, it’s not his fault, its his TEAMMATES fault, I see.
No complaining about fouls here. Outside of several over-the-back fouls that weren’t called (I’ll be unbiased), the Lakers are TAKING JUMPSHOTS TO COMBAT THE ZONE. Phoenix is cutting constantly. Considering how ludicrously lopsided the first two games were, I’m just shocked Lakers fans can come out and complain about calls.
The problem is the triangle. It’s based on cuts and isolation. You shouldn’t be using it to combat the zone. I said it right after the game, and Kenny the Jet co-signed me (yeah, that’s what happened). We know Phil ain’t stopping the triangle, so that gives Phoenix a chance. The only way Phoenix loses is if Kobe Bryant takes all the shots for 48 minutes, and I -know- Kobe wont do that because Kobe is afraid of taking too many shots in the fourth quarter just incase the team still loses so he wont get the blame.
Kobe came off as a coward to me this game. Thereeeee ya go Faker fans.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Gentry is slowly going from ‘great’ to ‘fantastic’ in my mind as a coach. Giving Frye continual minutes? Riding hot players while keeping big egos (Amare, Nash, Richardson) in check? Going with a totally different defensive strategy to combat the Lakers after games 1 and 2 didn’t pan out?
Altering it midgame to take Kobe out of it?
That’s grade A to me, right there.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jukai
You think Gentry took Kobe out of the game?
I think the Lakers players were too stupid to recognize how to get the hot man the ball and got rattled by the damn crowd. Every time the Lakers overloaded the zone on one side and then swung quickly to Kobe on the weakside they got a good look for Kobe, or someone else off Kobe’s attack move.
Strangely, they REFUSED to do this every time down. It was like they thought “Well, we can’t give it Kobe every time…”
Yes you can. Every. Single. Time. He can score or pass, it doesn’t matter. And then once the Suns have to deal with that, you have Gasol eating them up inside off easier passes. The game is simple, it’s about matchups and even with the zone the Suns can’t match up with the Lakers if they play smart on both ends.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Allen: Alright, that was stupid to say. Didn’t mean to write ‘take Kobe out of it,’ meant to say ‘make it harder.’ There was always a hand in Kobe’s face in the fourth, no easy buckets like he was getting in the second.
But Kobe’s teammates should only get partial blame.
I think if Kobe really wanted the ball, he would have DEMANDED the ball. This isn’t Dirk Nowitzki over here. When Kobe wants the ball, he GETS the damn ball. He fell back and LET the Lakers take the shots.
    Explain that to me.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I watched his body language. He was demanding hte ball, and getting angry when he wasn’t getting it. But, I think he didn’t want to go overboard and mess up his teammates psyche, for once.
I expect him to go crazy next game. And the Lakers to dominate inside.

  • http://nba.com Reflex

Kobe shot 15-22 FGAs & 6-9 from 3. He was Killing the Suns, plus as has been noted 10 dimes, more than anyone else out there. Problem is, the Lakers bench (Farmar, Vujacic, Brown, Walton etc) are absolutely awful & Bynum is soft. They’ve been riding the proverbial coattails of Kobe, Pau and to a lesser extent Odom. A 20pt from Artest would be nice otherwise Kobe needs to start jacking shots. If you’re reading this Mamba, 50pts off 35 shots please!

  • http://nba.com Reflex

Also, fu(k the haters, good write up.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Yep, I get it… when Lebron’s team loses, it’s Lebron’s fault. When Kobe’s team loses, its his teammates fault. Wow, how the tables have turned.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

@Jukai … and when Kobe’s team wins, it’s because Pau Gasol is the real MVP of the Lakers …

  • http://nba.com Reflex

Jackie with the counter on point

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

    +zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Suns need to hire Mike Brown to push their team over the top. He’d play Nash 48 mins, give Amare the ball at halfcourt, and make the team play zone with 2 minutes to go in the series.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Jackie’s counter would be on point, but the problem is, this is reality.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

@ Jukai: The problem with the comparison ur making is that Lebron completely dissapeared in the most important game of the season, at a time his team needed him the most, in a series that everyone expected them to win. Last year when the C’s lost to Orlando the only thing Bron was gettin flack over was his poor sportsmanship. Soo…unless I missed something, And the Lakers have lost to the Sons following a monumental choke job by Kobe… I don’t c ur point.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Negativekreep: I was mostly talking about the Cav’s loss to Orlando. And was mainly commenting about the people on the SLAM comment section, not the general sports consensus, which is usually far more logical.
I know Lebron didn’t really give his all against the Celts.
I -still- say Kobe should have demanded the ball more in the fourth, but let’s be honest– if not for Kobe, the game was over in the second. If not for Kobe, the game would be over in the third. Kobe has put on a Lebron-costume, passing and rebounding, while still bringing that same Kobe A game offense. He is destroying the zone defense BY HIMSELF. It’s incredible.
I’m just annoyed that the same people who yell at Lebron when he loses going all out, are giving Kobe a pass.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

On another note, other than a total waste of a gem by Kobe, I’m glad LA lost that game. Pau, Artest, Odom ect, got out hustled, hearted, and out played. PHX to thier credit is actually fighting, clawing n sweating to win this thing.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

Yeah I hear u, when virtually everyone was killing LBJ after his “bad game” I thought, what happened to the best “team” in the L? It was complete overkill. But then again isn’t everything overly hyped when it comes to Bron? His blessing is sometimes also his curse. But like I said I’m glad ur boys won, they deserved it. Sometimes it seems like the rest of the Lakers believe they should beat teams with skill alone. It’s confusing when u have a guy like Kobe who’s one of the most passionate n relentless guys out there, and it doesn’t seem to rub off, or worse yet when a group of young guys like Allot of PHX’s bench players outclass u in every way and there is vertually no reaction. But I can’t say enough about the effort PHX entire squad is putting in, must n cool for u to watch.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

first i’m so surprised that phil can’t think of a plan to counter the zone. or did he its just that it didn’t work? but then kudos suns great bball last 2 games overall. want to beat the zone? PLAY VUJACIC! fish-vujajic-kobe-lamar-pau. that would give you penetration in kobe-lamar. a good shooting line-up up to the 4 spot (the best IMO) and offensive rebounding. also a more mobile bigs than pau-bynum. that’s not a soso line-up in D too, except for Vujacic. that would also put lamar in Amare, which i think is better match than Pau. Stat is EATING Pau the last two games.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

J: Amare would kill Odom. There’s no Laker that can match up with Amare one-on-one. Lakers are a great help and weakside defense team, so they CAN take Amare out of it… but if they iso him, Amare kills whoever tries to take him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

^ i believe too. but what i’m saying is odom is atleast a better match than a less athletic or mobile Pau. and would take Stat to the perimeter more because of his ability to shoot the 3. but then i’m a believer of amare, he’s a monster.
