Los Suns Also Rise

Phoenix Suns win in more ways than one.

by Dave Zirin

Anyone who believes that sports can’t be an effective platform for social justice, needed only to watch last night’s game between Los Suns of Phoenix and the San Antonio Spurs. The unprecedented decision by the entire Suns organization — from owner Robert Sarver to star players Amar’e Stoudemire and Steve Nash — to come out against Arizona’s anti-immigrant Senate Bill 1070, created a sports broadcast like no other in my lifetime. The game on TNT began with sideline reporter Marty Snider outside the arena covering a mushrooming 3,000 person civil rights march, led by Al Sharpton and Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon (both wearing Los Suns Jerseys.) Then the scene switched to the pregame studio with host Ernie Johnson and former players Kenny “The Jet” Smith, Chris Webber, and Charles Barkley. The viewing audience then got an unexpected and bracing lesson in dissent.

Kenny Smith, like any good point guard, set up the others by saying, “I think it’s great that the team understands, the management understands and now the people of Phoenix are all rallying together at the same time.”

Barkley, a long time Arizona resident and a man who once said he was a Republican until “the Republicans lost their damn minds” chimed in saying, “The only people screwing it up are the politicians. The Governor – the interim governor I might add — JD Hayworth and John McCain. They’re the ones screwing this thing up. I really take my hat off to Robert Sarver and the Suns for taking a stand. You know, living in Arizona for a long time, the Hispanic community, they’re like the fabric of the cloth. They’re part of our community and any time you try to do any type of racial profiling or racial discrimination……. President Obama you’ve got to do something because these lightweight politicians in Arizona have no idea what they are doing.”

The typically blunt Barkley speaking in such terms is hardly surprising. But it was Chris Webber who upped the ante, interrupting a visibly uncomfortable Ernie Johnson with, “Public Enemy said it a long time ago. ‘By the Time I Get to Arizona.’ I’m not surprised. They didn’t even want there to be a Martin Luther King day when John McCain was in [office]. So if you follow history you know that this is part of Arizona politics.”

It was a remarkable display and it was difficult to not think of the millions of television viewers around the country, in sports bars, restaurants, and house parties, being confronted with this kind of forthright, plainspoken language.

But perhaps even more important than the support Los Suns received from protesters and broadcasters, was their play on the court. Phoenix trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter and Spurs star power forward Tim Duncan was scoring with ease. The crowd was dead and it wasn’t difficult to envision what would be said in the SportsWorld if Phoenix lost: “The political hoopla was a distraction.” “This is why sports and politics don’t mix.” “They should have been focused on the Spurs and not immigration.” And grinning smugly would have been L.A. Lakers coach Phil Jackson who chided the Suns yesterday saying, “If I heard it right the American people are really for stronger immigration laws…. I don’t think teams shJared Dudleyould get involved in the political stuff.”

In other words, everyone who stands with SB 1070 would be feeling a little more joyful this morning. It would have been an echo of the time Muhammad Ali lost his first fight to Joe Frazier and all the columnists and fans who wanted to see the draft dodging Ali punished, chortled gleefully after he was knocked to the canvas. But just when we were all ready to stick a fork in the brick-laying Suns, something remarkable happened. The slick shooting, fast breaking team started to crash the boards, play ugly, and do all the dirty work that wins games. Doughy, undersized three-point shooter Jared Dudley started aggressively snatching offensive rebounds like his soul had been possessed by Barkley himself, energizing the crowd and shocking his team back to life. The result was a 110-102 victory in which the run and gun Suns were held to just 8 fast break points. Coach Alvin Gentry said afterward that he had never seen the team play so mentally tough.

Maybe this will be the start of a new trend where teams see the unifying benefits of going out on a political limb and taking a stand. Maybe players across the sports leagues who oppose SB 1070 will be inspired to come together in a common organization and demand Arizona cease the imposition of “Juan Crow” on the Latino population. Maybe the major sports unions, all of whom have voiced opposition to the bill, will release a joint statement saying they will support any player or team who boycotts the state as long as SB 1070 is on the books. Maybe this is all utterly unrealistic. But it seems a hell of a lot more possible this morning than it did last night. Viva Los Suns.

So what other crimial activities do the Los Suns support 100%? Tax fraud? ID Theft? Kidnapping?

  • Jess

YES! It’s been a long time since I felt like our athletes gave us something to be truly proud of. They pulled it off this time! Now THAT is how to be a role model!

  • Adam

“Anti-immigrant” bill? Are you serious? A law that requires officers to investigate suspected crimes? Wow! If I’m pulled over, I’m required to show my driver’s license and proof of insurance… Will “Los Suns” support my right to not have to provide these “papers”? Did you get paid to write this? Keep it up, you’re marginalizing yourself out of a job.

So “social justice” means supporting crime. I’ve long suspected that. Now I have written proof. A poster above asked what other criminal activities do Los Suns show their support? … the most obvious is support of rape and rapists. Professional sports sure seems to have more than their share. Los Suns can show their solidarity with Lawrence Taylor and ALL the others. What’s the big deal? A crime is a crime.

  • Nate

More people showed up to the ASU Undie-Run than to the 3000 people march. And just because I am confused, when does Chris Weber get to make a point, we never listened to him before.

  • Jackson

I along with millions of others now will no longer be suns fans.

Our country is far more important than a basketball team and their hypocritic political agendas!

Read the bill, its only 16 pages long… before spouting off about our federal law

  • Thomas Otterson

Seriously. What other criminal activities do the Suns support? What kind of question is that?

I might just as easily ask a supporter of the bill, “So, what other unconstitutional activities do you support? McCarthyism? Japanese internment camps? Yellow Stars of David?” It would actually be a slightly more relevant question.

Protest against this bill has approximately zero to do with making illegal activity illegal (!). It has to do with requiring law-abiding, tax-paying, American -citizens- to carry papers in case they’re asked for them. Just like they did in the Soviet Union. So what other communist activities do you support?

  • http://big11mel@yahoo.com Big Mel

Would be nice if they were not scared and stood for something.

  • Rick

you’ve got it backwards will smith, racial profiling is illegal and Los Suns are 100% against it.

  • chris

@will smith.. How is that supporting criminal activities?? The SB 1070 is an anit-immigration law, not an anti-ILLEGAL immigration law. There ARE legal immigrants in this country if you didn’t know, off course you didn’t, so therefore they’re restrciting opportunities some of my latino brothers want to have in a ‘better’ life. Off course seeing that this country is not welcoming them with arms wide open they might just reconsider.. or just do it the old fashioned way.. I think you know what that way is. Point is that supporting this is NOT like supporting some illegal activity, but supporting rights that other men, women, and children want to have in the land of the free. But we won’t make it that simple now will we? No. I shake my head, wag the finger,y le digo un par de cosas si lo tengo de frente (I give him a few words of advice, sort of.. i’d curse in spanish) to the governor of Arizona.

  • http://www.los.com Los *ss-suns

Keep the politics out of the game. I want to see the illegals pay for the high price box seats. If the suns are against the bill; give the state some aditional tax money to help cover the illegals medical and educationial needs…

  • waldo

my son has been victimized by somebody in Miami, Florida, who stole his SS# and later filed the income tax return using his #. What do you think: this person now has to be granted American citizenship or to be put in jail? Viva Los Estades Unidos.By the way,how to say it in English? Los Suns, you totally lost my support. About year ago I had seen on the court jersees “Los Spurs”, fortunatelly just for one game. I guess this time Spurs were more decent and did not sell themselves for politics.Thank you Spurs, shame on you Suns.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Waldo
Sorry, the Spurs wanted to wear their “Los Spurs” jerseys, they really did, but they couldn’t get them delivered from San Antonio in enough time.
So, you’ll have to ban them as well.
Clearly you didn’t hear Greg Popovich compare the new law to the Patriot Act.

  • Ronald

What does identity theft/fraud have to do with racism? It could have been anyone, not necessarily an illegal immigrant. Your logic seems very flawed Waldo.

  • Ronald

And calling it an “anti-immigrant bill” seems to be a bit of a hyperbole. What it seems to be is really a police power legislation that allows racial profiling with no legal recourse for people who are victims when the legislation is abused. Just like defamation legislation is not neccesarily an anti-freedom of speech law.

  • Ronald

@Thomas: You, sir, are being a hypocrite. Carrying identification or “papers” is not a communist activity. This has been practiced in many countries in the world without it being a form of socialism/communism.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

I truly believe that the intentions of the law are to combat crime related to the vicious drug-war that is raging right across he border. However the implementation will be awfully similar to Rumsfeld/Cheney style persecution of innocent people, citizen or not. Our Washington maverick has made it clear on occasion that he is not willing to work on issues with congress or the administration. As Chuck said “they have no idea what they’re doing”.
Those that disagree probably think that it is wiser to let the detention, immigration and court system deal with these problems. Try using forward thinking for a change. And take a page out of the NY book of terrorism prevention, international networking and investigation to fight crime.

  • Ta Ta Toothy

70 percent of Arizonans support this bill. There are a lot of kidnappings and violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants and the locals there know all about it, hence the overwhelming support for this bill. If anybody cared to read the bill, they would realize that this is not at all like the mainstream media is portraying it to be. This shows how ignorant our country is – the idiots hear something on TV and just lap it up without investigating the facts. Illegal immigrants ARE a big f-ing problem. Google “MS-13″ (who are thought to be operating in about 40 states) and try to tell me we should just have open borders. How can we spend billions (that we don’t have) on anti-terrorism b.s. and not enforce our borders? And while you’re at it, google Mexico’s immigration laws – they have it right…

  • Ira

Author is an IDIOT! “Anti-immigration bill” is purposely misleading because he cannot stand the truth. The truth is, much of the Arizona law is copied word for word from Federal statues, which are completely ignored. The federal government is 100% to blame for the mess on our southern border, now they claim that they need “reform” to fix it, LIARS! All they have to do is enforce existing law!

  • Jose

Tha bill Is profiling and it’s going to hurt the legal immigrants here in AZ. Those are the 2 big reasons were against it. No one in here is sayin it’s right that people come in illegally, but the bill is going to mess with All latino’s, not just the folks without papers.I mean i shouldn’t have to carry proof of my citizenship or proof that i’m a legal resident when im just taking a 5 minute trip to the gas station or something.

  • Papa Smurf

Jose hit the nail on the head.

  • ampd

@ta ta toothy: google “republicans” (who are thought to be operating in about 50 states) and try to tell me that the vast majority aren’t anything more than glorified jingoists. the fact is, this bill essentials paves the way for racial profiling and DOES call for nazi-esque practices in forcing immigrants to carry immigration papers

  • ampd

oh, and i’m pretty sure unless you’re native american, then you’re technically an illegal immigrant too

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i laughed when i saw “I along with millions of others now will no longer be suns fans”. really there are millions of suns fans? i find it hard to believe.
and allenp, i think the spurs only has those “Los Spurs” in home jerseys so that’s why they can’t wear them. (though i’m not sure why they can’t, seeing the “Los Suns” jerseys are orange)

  • http://www.thiagopinheiro.com.br Thiago Pinheiro

I’m a Suns’ supporter from Brazil and I really proud of them.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’m f*cking tired of people complaining about how they have to pay taxes for illegal immigrants. Does it suck? Sure it does. But EVERYTHING IS A TWO-WAY STREET. You taxpayers aren’t doing NEARLY as much of a favor for these people as you think you are.
We’re always talking about the illegal immigrants as if they’re leeches. Why don’t we talk about how much the illegal immigrants actually BENEFIT the United States? These people work their @sses off in low-paying jobs that NO ONE ELSE WANTS. Do you realize how much this benefits the economy? THERE IS A REASON WHY THE UNITED STATES’ GOVERNMENT DOES NOT GO THROUGH MORE EXTREME MEASURES OF QUELLING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. It’s because, quite frankly, the US Economy needs these people to sustain its longevity. These people provide a great amount of support for this country, whether you like it or not.
And the money that their exploitative companies make–companies that pay MORE in taxes with HIGHER profits–by paying them ridiculously low wages MORE THAN MAKES UP FOR THEIR LACK OF TAX DOLLARS.
Sure, you can racially profile every Latino, Asian, black, or brown person, and see where that gets you; let’s see how much the US benefits from deporting it’s labor force.
As much as I h@te the prospect of cheap labor, and want only fairness and equality for these people, the fact is, the United States needs them here to sustain the economy.
No illegal immigrants means companies have to pay their workers higher wages, which in turn means lower profits and more layoffs, which THEN leads to lower production and even MORE layoffs.
It’s f*cked up for both sides, but right now America really does not have a choice. So STOP dehumanizing the illegal immigrants and acting like YOU’RE doing them such a big and righteous favor. THEY WORK HARD to stay in this country and feed their families–regardless of how much you pay in taxes, THEY still complete THEIR work.

  • Sturm Drang

How many of us American citizens walk around carrying our PASSPORTS while we’re here? Or our birth certificates/naturalization papers? Yeah, that’s right.

The problem with this law is that it is EXTREMELY easy to abuse. Oh, that guy isn’t white? Maybe he’s from the Middle East. Let’s call the cops. I don’t like him in my shop. That Chinese guy’s got an accent. He must be from China.

People aren’t against this stupid law because they’re pro-criminal. They’re against it because they are for what the USA is SUPPOSED to be about. How is there equality if having a different skin color or having an accent from 20 years ago changes how the police treat you?

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

I 100% guarantee if you check all those ‘dissenting voices’ IP addresses, you’d find one guy. These articles go up supporting the Suns, and suddenly a half-dozen people who we have NEVER SEEN COMMENT before suddenly all chime in with an opinion?
    It’s the same person.
I’d like to see how white people (that’s right, I said it, white people. So what if I’m white) deal with a law that forces them to carry around more identification than they are legally required to normally carry around, while being pulled over and harassed constantly for looking like themselves.
THIS IS NOT GOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM BEGINS AT THE BORDER.
    People are so mindless.

  • Chief Castro

To all of you ignorant fools that follow the central “government” propaganda line. Here’s some food for thought( if you can think). The Arizona law is a almost identical copy of the federal law, the powers in DC will not enforce it because they need new voters to remain in power indefinitely, the illegals that work in the country for lower wages do 2 things: lower the wages for Americans working in the same fields,Provide a way for companies to lower their costs and therefore put competitors out of business. Make hiring illegals a felony and this will stop. 2. Their loyalty lies with their home country and not with the U.S. All they want is the money and benefits and complain that we have too many rules, they refuse to learn English so we have to acomodate them by doing everything in their language (mainly Spanish) which makes the operation of any service or bussines more expensive. I for one am not opposed to inmigration and I don’t believe any TRUE American is but I am opposed to ILLEGAL Inmigration I see it as an invasion of my country, the legal inmigration system is geared to teach newcomers the American way of doing things and instill loyalty to their new country and the institutions and laws. If they sneak accross the border they have no respect for either, I work with this guys, its all about the money, they hate the grigos but thet lve the money. Fuera a los invasores. By the way if you translate something to the Spanish at least do it right the suns= Los Soles, not los suns we have enough problems with Eenglish lets not start with Spanglish too, it reflects as sheer ignorance on our part.

    A Proud American.

  • Chief Castro

This one is to Jose. Amigo, when I drive anywhere I carry a drivers license, that is proof enough for the law. What’s the problem ? you have a drivers license, don’t you? All this Political correctness is nothing but a smoke screen for totalitarian rule. (that means the government owns and control everything you know, like in mejico)

  • Victor

Viva! It has been long time! Being brown is not a crime you should be pulled over for. If you want to stop crime there are more effective ways than targeting the working people!

  • http://elchinas.wordpress.com El Chinas.

It is simply astonishing to hear people spew hate against the Suns and those who do not support draconian measures such as the SB 1070.

Sure, stopping illegal immigration starts with a secure border and enforcement at the federal level. But it also requires Americans to stop buying from Wall Mart and the rest of these American companies that hire the undocumented, and to relinquish the comfort of having people who carry out tasks that average citizen would not do, such as gardeners, nannies, and those who clean your restaurants, homes and harvest the food you eat. I doubt many who supported this bill ever thought of their own behaviors as a magnet for illegal immigration. And keep in mind the tough conditions the undocumented go through so we can live comfortably in an affordable manner. Illegal immigration is a problem and Arizona does see a lot of the worst effects, but a bill that demonizes those in search of a better living and make life difficult for millions who look one way or another (i.e. if you don’t look white) is the last thing we need.

To Will Smith, Chief Castro and the rest who fail to put themselves in others’ shoes. What’s wrong with the law? Imagine being asked to show your ID and hassled every turn of the corner just because you look a certain way. Imagine that – I think most of those folks who supported this mindless bill would desert the legislation like bandits if they receive that kind of treatment.
