Matt Barnes Believes He Can Stop Paul Pierce

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Very little has gone right for the Orlando Magic during the first two games of the Eastern Conference Finals. Down 2-0, playing Game 3 in a very loud, hostile environment, you’d think that the team’s overall confidence would be somewhat shaken at this point.

And you’d be wrong. Wrong as far as Matt Barnes is concerned, anyway.

Barnes had a lot to say about Paul Pierce following team practice yesterday, and says he can slow Pierce down if given the opportunity.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

“I’d love to guard Pierce,” Barnes said. “I got the chance to guard him a little bit the last game and felt that I did a pretty good job. But he’s really rolling right now. So we need to slow him down somehow.” And while Barnes said he would do his job on whomever the coaches wanted him to guard, when asked if he could stop Pierce, he replied confidently. “I think that I can,” Barnes said. “You don’t really stop anybody; you just want to slow him down.’’

“My third foul in the third quarter, when I tried to beat him over the screen, he fell down like I threw him,” Barnes said, when asked about Pierce’s tendency to exaggerate contact. “It was ridiculous. But the refs called it, so it was a good play. It was a flop, 100 percent, and that’s how some guys like to play. But if the refs call it, it’s effective.”

As for Pierce’s talk of sweeping the Magic during a post-game interview on Tuesday, Barnes is staying away from getting into a verbal battle with an opponent, ever since he got in trouble for his Twitter war with Lamar Odom. “He can talk (stuff) right now because they’ve been backing it up,” Barnes said. “Whatever he’s said is granted because we’ve done nothing to stop it.”

Barnes has been bothered by back spasms throughout the series, but claims that he’s feeling healthy.

Healthy enough to take on Pierce, who has averaged 25 points, 7 boards, and is shooting 58% from the field through the first couple of games against Orlando.

Tomorrow night, the Magic need to help Matt Barnes — who will undoubtedly be booed lustily by the Celtic faithful — back up his tough talk, otherwise this thing will soon be over.

Pierce is such a pu$$y, fu(kin floper!, he got game though…but hes abgnoxious!

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

From Kobe stopper to Pierce stopper?

  • SirFreshnessTheThird

Matt Barnes is a scrub, if he tried to guard pierce he would get lit up like the fourth of july

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Haha Pierce sure has incorporated the South American flop into his game well. I think he ends up on the floor on half of all screens set for him. Maybe Matt Barnes of three years ago could slow Pierce but not hobbled, back pain Barnes. Good luck to him if he gets the assignment though.

  • Ali

Talk is cheap, just go out and play. I think STAT learned his lesson with all the talk…L.O. is killin’ the Suns. Shut your mouth and play!

  • vtrobot

those praying hands inked on barnes’ neck should start praying harder.

  • underdog

The real question for Orlando: who has stopped Rashard Lewis from playing basketball?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

c dats the problem wit the magic they beleive to much . face it u suck u were in the finals last year by default jemeer is not a allstar point guard. steve nash darren williams chris paul tony parker jason kidd brian westbrook wow. now u compare the top five guards in the east u cant. i beleive the tragics will b swept and d.howard will demand a new coach or sign and a true allstar player 2 help him win a championship but thyey have no money. i seen this storyline before in orlando wow (shaq)

  • http://www.nba.com Dacre

swisha sweet – brian westbrook….really? stay in school dude.

  • http://kamndestiny@yahoo.com swisha sweet

brian westbrook has played better then that washed up over rated jameer all year. jameer is surrounded by shooters and athelits. hes got the best big man a high flyer great shooters around him and he cant even lead his on division in assit per game. and his assist to turnover ratio is horrible the guy flatout suck i myself could guard him

  • The D Train

I’ve always like Pierce, but he really has turned into the current-day Reggie Miller with the over-exaggerated flops all the time. He moves like he’s in slow motion, and a good majority of his offense is up-fakes and trying to get to the line. Now I’m never one to get bent out of shape over some veteran wiles, but PP is getting a little ridiculous with it. You’d think that the Magic were hitting him with a cattle-prod the way he’s reacting to contact out there.

  • anon

Brian Westbrook is top tier PG, no doubt.

  • rashado

brian westbrook? am i missing something?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That boy is beast returning punts.

  • SirFreshnessTheThird

anon is a scrub:P russell westbrook haha, orlando sucks tehehe

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Co-sign Anon and Swisha. That Brian Westbrook been killing them out there!

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

@ The D-Train, i feel you on the flopping, but as these guys get older, they have to use any little tricks they can to make up for the lack of speed and what not. its up to the refs to not let them get away with it.

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

Orlando’s playing OKC? Rashard has been missing all season. He needs his perfomance enhanced. Pun intended

  • vtrobot

i’ve never heard of brian westbrook, but he sounds amazing.

  • http://slamonline.com MF

    Matt Barnes is a scrub

  • mgballer

lets just throw in rondo for the hell of it into that conversation. he might not be no brian westbrook, but hes an okay guard.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

    These comments are too funny.

  • LA Huey

“Westbrook”? I think you meant “Shaw”. That boy was/is Boss

I believe Matt Barnes can stop Paul Pierce.

  • Jordan Zimmerman

@Jackie Moon How throw a ball at him?

  • ClydeSays

Barnes is a decent defender but even when Pierce has a bad game, the C’s find a way to win. Orlando should be more concerned with making the extra pass & taking decent shots.

  • JoeMaMa

In the interest of stirring things up for the next series (I was sure it would be Orlando), here’s a difference between Kobe and Paul: when Barnes fakes throwing the ball at each guy’s face, Kobe doesn’t move. Pierce would act like it actually hit him. In the knee.

  • chingy

    co-sign M Cho!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eyY2_6_fbU SMK

Barnes has that ‘good defender’ rep because his offensive abilities are minimal. But people think because he has a job on a good team, so he must do something well, hence he gets called ‘good defender’.

  • Klav

    JoeMaMa wins.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

    @JoeMaMa – good one!

  • roman

Rashard Lewis- made 18mil this year! Damn thats highway robbery. dude isnt worth 1mil the way he has played.

  • http://www.kwapt.blogspot.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

Maybe he can slow Pierce a bit. No worries. Then Rondo, Ray, Ticket or someone on the bench will step-up. That’s what championship-caliber teams do.

  • Silent Storm

Here’s a difference between Kobe and Paul. Kobe wasn’t stabbed multiple times. In the torso.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

Here’s a difference between Paul and KG. KG wasn’t stabbed multiple times. In the torso.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

Here’s a difference between Paul and Rondo. Rondo wasn’t stabbed multiple times. In the torso. … Nope, still doesn’t work … see the joke is that Kobe and Paul would have opposite reactions, whereas Paul Pierce being stabbed is 1) not really a joke and 2) doesn’t show a difference between him and one guy, it’s something different he has experienced vs 99% of the other players in the League.

  • BostonBaller

Some call it flopping some call it veteran wiles. I say it’s in between. It’s not like when P Double “flails” he hasn’t been touched. How many other players in the L who’s jock a lot of you are sniff’n do the same thing and you don’t say a thing but and 1? Players have always over-exaggerated when they get fouled, it’s just that todays athletes “depend” on it more. Yes PDouble’s moves are slow and he up fakes more than most but what is wrong with that since it “still” works? There are a lot of top tier players who should incorporate that into their games. Barnes is a decent defender though.

da magic r pure garbage sooner then u guys think d.howard will b demanding a trade and the magic need to rid steve van gundy patric ewing and otis smith all these guys are loosers these r not the people u want to surround ayoung guy like howard around if u want him to hang around they should sell dat team to an owner that wants to and is willing to win a championship. u dont win championships on a budget
signn guys past their prime is not the lick

  • Mitch

@swisha sweet: man you really know your nba. brian westbrook and now steve van gundy?
where are you even gettin these names from dog?

  • Silent Storm

Kobe is a tough guy. Who wears scarves around his head and poses for questionable photos. Now that’s a joke.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

  • Thetdon

He couldn’t stop jesus shuttlesworth… YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Its hard for shard to make an impact when he only gets 6 shots. Jameer and vince have to get him the ball in position to be aggressive , otherwise shard will swing the ball. And has anyone seen pietrus?

  • NBA kid

i think the magic need to replace stan van gundy with this steve van gundy guy, he sounds pretty amazing

  • http://www.kwapt.blogspot.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

    Steve Van Gundy. Classic.

  • NBA kid

and swisha sweet, you don’t win championships on a budget? i suppose the spurs suddenly lost 4 rings and the mavs gained all of them somehow right? or even better, the knicks mustve won the title 2 years ago cause they had the highest paid team! that makes sense!

  • Robb

    yeah? show us.

  • aotearaw

    Darren Williams got game.

  • nastierthanu

Honestly swisha should get his own column. Unbelievable!!! Steve van gundy was great, Brian Westbrook was special but hold up let me pull the direct quote out. “The guy flat out sucks I can guard him!!!”. Really swisha really? Jameer nelson was the starting point on a one loss and 30 win squad in college. He is a straight up headache to cover. Really? What’s rolled up in that cigar wrap.

  • Shem

@Swisha Sweet: Before you comment classifying the top 5 guards and what not, you might wanna learn the names of those top 5 guards. Brian Westbrook, really? It’s Russell, einstein

  • http://freerice.com LMFAO

Yes I live here in Orlando, and Barns is A averge
defence player. He had one good game against Koby and the Magics make him out to be great. The games I watch Pierce scored in the twentys. Now you call that defence.
