Pat Riley Hints at Coaching Again

Riles tells the assembled press that he’s confident the Heat will re-sign D-Wade, and who knows, he might even pick up a clipboard again someday. Better brush up that CV, Erik Spoelstra. From the Miami Herald: “Two months before the Heat’s roster is expected to be dramatically reshaped, president Pat Riley said Monday he has agreed to remain with the franchise beyond the expiration of his contract this summer and would not rule out a return to coaching. Riley also said he is ‘very confident’ the team will be able to re-sign Dwyane Wade. Asked if he could rule out coaching again, Riley said, ‘Why should I give an answer to that? Why should [a reporter] demand from me what I want to do with the rest of my life and to make a commitment that if I do something two months from now, I will get lambasted for doing it or not doing it. Don’t lay that on me. I will do whatever is in the best interests of building a team here. Period. Whatever it takes. I will let you fill in the blanks. Don’t allow me the opportunity that I can’t coach again.’ Riley went on to say, ‘If some free agent were to say, I will come here but you must do this,’ well, hell, if that happens that day, then I might have to give it some thought based on building this franchise. I don’t think that’s compromising any integrity. But give me the space to be able to do that without having to be definitively owned to it today.”’

Yes! While your at it bring back the way you coach the Knicks back in the 90′s!

Obviously he’ll be back when he re-signs Wade and another franchise player, ala Shaquille in 2004.

  • underdog

If he wants to coach Wade again, he’ll have to sign with the Bulls (:.

  • BackInBlack

    he will sign bosh

John Wooden, Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Arnold Aurebach.

Spo: get ready to “spend time with your family.”

Wow, is Riles a front-running d-bag or what? It’s alright to promote an assistant when the team is growing and building, but as soon as there’s a glimmer of a championship on the horizon, here comes Riley, galloping down from the front office to hog all the glory. Pat the Rat indeed.

I wonder what free agent it will take to get Riley to commit to coaching again. Is Boozer enough? What about Amare? Maybe only Bosh is enough to get him to coach again right away. I get if they get Boozer, he’ll let Spoelstra coach for the first year while Booz and Wade work out their chemistry and get a rhythm on the court. Then when it’s time to make a run, Spo will get shoved out the door so Riley can win another ring and claim that only the master coaches can push a team to the top. Hogwash. What a sack of crap.

I’ve been suspecting for awhile that D-Wade has been talking to Micky Arison, and strongly advising him that Riley’s influence within the organization should be limited if not eliminated for Dwyane to seriously consider re-upping in Miami. He has to be tired of Riley quitting when things are going bad with the Heat, criticizing Wade for not being focused on basketball (Doesn’t Pat get $50Gs for speaking engagements?), and bottom line–NOT GETTING ENOUGH TALENT TO KEEP DEFENSES FROM DOUBLING UP AND KNOCKING D DOWN WHEN HE GOES TO THE RACK. It’ll be interesting IF D leaves to see what Riley accuses him of…and what D says back, because he’s got about seven years of vent about Riley stored up…

Pat wants Bron, simple and plain. The L should be terrified at the prospect of a Bron/D-Wade combo + another max money big. As mindbogglign as it sounds, Miami would have that kind of cap room if they unload Supercoolbeas.

This is one of the few people in the league I do not respect. There are several teams and players that I dislike but still respect them.

Co-sign MikeC.. TWO TIMES. While Pat Riley was one of my favorite coaches ever(due to his run with the Knicks), the crap he has continued to pull throughout this decade is ridiculous. He ALWAYS sacks the team’s coach so HE can claim the glory when the Heat are close to a championship. Just ask Stan Van Gundy.

  • Hangtime Hec

T-Money is that for certain? If they have that type of money power why would wade even think twice about leaving.

Although, if you were a free agent, which coach is more appealing to you?
