Wizards Land No. 1 Pick in 2010 NBA Draft

Not bad for the Wizards and 76ers, who jumped from the No. 5 and No. 7 spots, respectively, to win the first two picks in this June’s NBA Draft.

The Wiz have a chance to take the franchise in another direction by selecting top point guard John Wall with the No. 1 overall pick. Zero seemed to have completely missed the point of a max contract. Maybe Wall can take Arenas as a warning, and play his way to max contract after a couple stellar seasons.

Here are the results of this evening’s NBA Draft Lottery:

1. Washington
2. Philadelphia
3. New Jersey
4. Minnesota
5. Sacramento
6. Golden State
7. Detroit
8. LA Clippers
9. Utah
10. Indiana
11. New Orleans
12. Memphis
13. Toronto
14. Houston

Thank Jebus NY didn’t gift-wrap the #1 to Utah.
    First?

Maybe all the bs us Sixer fans have had to deal with this season has paid off? Maybe, just maybe…

  • Nel-O Posted: May.18 at 9:59 pm
let the lebron to the wizards rumors begin

  • Sawyer Posted: May.18 at 10:06 pm
That should be a high schoring back court. I hope Arenas can get past all this and get ack to being an All-Star.

  • Diesel Posted: May.18 at 10:12 pm
Any word on where I can pick up a rubber suit like the one Holiday was wearing?

  • GotHandles? Posted: May.18 at 10:19 pm
co-sign MikeC…i woulda jumped out my window if the Jazz had snagged #1. E. Turner and J. holiday backcourt in Phili is fresh as hell.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: May.18 at 10:42 pm
Nets supporters obviously saddened. Read the Ledger recap (and note the hysterical picture): http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2010/05/nets_lose_nba_draft_lottery.html

  • dfrance21 Posted: May.18 at 10:42 pm
So…. there’s no way the Wizards pick anyone other than Wall right?

  • MikeC. Posted: May.18 at 10:53 pm
@Ben – watching it live was priceless. When Adam Silver announced Philly had the 2nd pick, Irene Pollin reacted in slow motion. Her mouth slowly opened and the rest of her face slowly brightened. I picture my mother making the same face if I told her I had actually landed a career in my degree field instead of using my diploma to cover a hole in the drywall.

  • Enigmatic Posted: May.18 at 11:45 pm
Y’all see the look of relief on Jrue Holiday’s face when it was announced Sixers had the second pick? Dude was like “Whew! No John Wall! My job is safe!” lol

  • Enigmatic Posted: May.18 at 11:47 pm
This will only make the “LeBron to Chicago” rumors surface even more. I know NJ has a lot more to offer, but one of the things they were really looking for was getting the chance to entice LeBron with playing with John Wall.

  • thedimemachine Posted: May.18 at 11:51 pm
A Wall-Arenas backcourt looks promising. And scary. As for the Nets, I think Cousins is the man.

  • L Posted: May.18 at 11:54 pm
I called the Nets not getting the 1st pick. was I right or was I right??

  • aotearaw Posted: May.19 at 12:05 am
A mate of mine bet me $50 that the Wiz would make the WCF this season. True story.

  • Noel Posted: May.19 at 12:22 am
Too bad for the Nets. Wall and Lebron could have been the best pre-game/sideline dance combos this league has ever seen. Also, may I respectfully say that Irene Pollin is a cute old lady?

  • Hangtime Hec Posted: May.19 at 12:25 am
Somehow, someway, the wizards will find a way to screw up. The wizards are experts in failure.

  • Robb Posted: May.19 at 12:40 am
Man, the Nets just can’t stop losing…

  • Jose Posted: May.19 at 12:54 am
    @ aotearaw: Either way u still won.haha….
Well, c’mon now, a team like the nets w/ such bad luck as they had this season couldn’t expect that #1 pick. i mean like ya’ll been sayin the magic were the last worst team that got the 1st pick os yea

    Bye bye Gilbert…

Wow. Really. A bunch of basketball people giving their two bits and to say after reading every comment I was very disappointed. I was hoping to read possible mock draft answers, but since none were really presented, allow me to break it down why I think Evan Turner should be the No. 1 Pick going to the Wizards. Lets suppose this scenario: Gilbert Arenas gets his act together and does play like an All-Star. The 1 position for the Wizards is already filled. The 2 position is up for grabs between Josh Howard (SF/SG) and Al Thornton (recurring knee issues and has played the 3 since his inception in the NBA), therefore the 2 position really isn’t filled. You have a good solid 4 or possible 5 in Andre Blatche. And lets say that Andre Blatche plays the 4, than it would be a smart move for the organization to pick a Center to fill the now-Maverick Brendan Haywood. The Center they would pick up would be one know more for his defensive presence, and by that I don’t mean a Dwight Howard status type center, but a decent defensive center that can get at least 10-15 pts a game, 10+ boards, and 2-3 blocks a game. Given all this, the one position that needs to be filled is the 2 and none other than Evan Turner would make a perfect fit for this squad. p/s: know that this is just my opinion and I am open to any other argument that may refute wat I just said.

Oops. Forgot to mention that the 3 would be the same as the 2. Most likely would be Al Thornton and then again, there is always the free agency and trades. So yea.

  • Dave Posted: May.19 at 2:53 am
@ aotearaw: That story would have been way better had you not corrected yourself. ;)

  • batman Posted: May.19 at 2:54 am

  • Sean Posted: May.19 at 3:32 am
David Emmaneulle Castilo, I have a valid argument to refute what you just said: You are an idiot.

  • Royal Posted: May.19 at 3:47 am
lol at sean, why you gotta put david on blast like that!!! If I was in the Wizards camp I would consider trading the pick to another lottery team who is willing to give up a quality players ,such as the Nets who are probably deperate enough to trade anyone not named Brook on their roster for John Wall, but a John Wall and Gilbert “don’t bring guns to the” Arenas backcourt does
    sound enticing.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: May.19 at 4:03 am
Gil and wall will be incredible. Add mm, josh blunts howard, al, andray watch me wank blatche and uve got a decent team. Im calling it, 5 seed next season

  • dino Posted: May.19 at 7:10 am
The Wizards need Evan Turner more than Wall but with everything that happend to the wiz last year they also need to sell tickets. Plus the wizards have never really had a real franchise player to build around and John Wall can be that player, Turner might be a better all around player than Wall but JW is more exciting to watch and the wiz need something exciting on the court. Also with JWall D.C. will have to of the most exciting athletes in the WORLD the other being the Caps Alex Ovechkin

  • ClydeSays Posted: May.19 at 7:59 am
I can’t make sense of 80% of the picks GMs make. Taking position guys for need, instead of looking for talent they can develop or trade. Wall seems a lock for #1. Cousins could go as high as 2 or 3. Evan Turner & Derrick Favors get picked high, I think. Greg Monroe & Wesley Johnson round out the top.

  • NUPE Posted: May.19 at 8:46 am
Wall is the popular choice but Turner may make more sense to play along with Gilbert. Wall is certainly more exciting and arguably has more ‘potential’ which also means more risk if that potential does not pan out. Plus there are some ‘character issues’ with Wall that the Wiz don’t need (maybe having gilbert around as an example of what not to do will help). Turner is a better all around player (not a better athlete) who could just as easily play the 1 or 2 guard spot and defend 1s, 2s or 3s. He’s not as raw a talent so his ‘potential’ isn’t as high but he’s a ‘safer bet’. All this said, the Wiz will go with wall to sell tickets and avoid the criticism for not picking him (and the fear that his potential pays out and they’ll be the team that passed him up). However, I bet that Philly will get the better NBA player and Turner will come in second for ROY after Blake G.

so if they bring in wall, will arenas move to shooting guard?
high five! high five! no? too obvious?

  • wayno Posted: May.19 at 9:52 am
Good thing Detroit decided to start winning games at the end of thier season…that really screwed them over…

  • Sparker Posted: May.19 at 9:56 am
just happy for the wizards, considering what they’ve been through. good for them.

  • Sovainmag.com Posted: May.19 at 10:03 am
The draft is clearly set up. New Jersey doesnt need Wall. They have Harris. They need a 3 or 4. Wes Johnson or Favors. Those two are not worth #1 picks, thus making NJ win the #3 pick so they can get a need. Think about it! Washington can draft a pg, to move Arenas to the 2g. Wiz will probably select the Turner. Wall is way overhyped. He’s good, but the NBA Draft is filled with more potential busts than potential role players.

  • dfrance21 Posted: May.19 at 10:09 am
I think we all know by now that the draft has very little to do with what your team needs. When you’re in the lottery anyway. How could the Wiz NOT pick Wall? Even though they could really use a 2,3 or 5, they would look foolish to not pick whop everyone thinks is going to be an All-NBA talent one day. If they don’t pick him and he blows up, they’ll be idiots. If they do pick him and he stinks it up, then he’s the bust, not the Wiz. Listen Wizards, don’t do what Portland did a few years ago and pick what your team needs because you see how that working out. Pick the “surefire” talent.

  • kenNY Posted: May.19 at 10:09 am
..if i was Wall, i wouldnt be too stoked about potentially taking Arenas spot, i mean you seen dudes locker?!

  • LA Huey Posted: May.19 at 10:16 am
Funny how the one league where tanking usually doesn’t get you what you want is the only one where teams consistently do it…Wiz should keep Gil (I think he’ll redeem himself for the franchise) and just run a small backcourt with an entertaining style of play. If you can’t win rings, at least be fun to watch (ie. PHX Suns)

  • Anton Posted: May.19 at 10:56 am
Arenas willl teach him how to shoot.

Scenario 1: Arenas re-commits himself to the Wiz organization, moves to the 2 and tears it up this year. Everyone is happy and the Wiz are Phoenix-East.
Scenario 2: The Wiz draft Wall, and Arenas doesn’t like the idea of playing the 2 and asks the Wiz to trade him. After missing out on Lebron, NY offers David Lee in a sign and trade for Arenas. NY is now stuck with Arenas’ contract, he plays like he only has one leg and we suck. Barf.

  • jason Posted: May.19 at 11:12 am
If Wall can get the Wizards 40 wins, they’ll have tons of cap room to land Durant or Carmelo. I mean, they’ve both expressed interest in playing closer to home…

  • niQ Posted: May.19 at 11:33 am
Number 1 rule in drafting. Always pick the best available player. Draft for “needs” next. Selecting John Wall first would make the most sense. Think about it. John Wall is your future. Don’t even try to build a team around Arenas again. Sure he was nice before he got suspended, but don’t forget he has a history of injuries. If he gets injured again, then what? Don’t draft for needs, that’s for picks 20+.

  • niQ Posted: May.19 at 11:36 am
jason: They’re move expressed interest in playing closer to home. And where did hear that? Last I heard, Durant was practically begging the Thunder to give him a contract to sign cause he “loves playing with that team.”

  • Dacre Posted: May.19 at 12:13 pm

  • ClydeSays Posted: May.19 at 12:26 pm
I guess I’m happy for Wizards fans (or happy that the Wiz even have fans left) but it’s not like their GM’s haven’t made plenty of dumb mistakes. Giving Gil that contract was ridiculous BEFORE he started waving guns around in the locker room. The firesale of dumping Haywood & Butler definitely set them back. And who could forget Jordan’s infamous Kwame pick. The next GM that even CONSIDERS giving 100+ million bucks to a scoring wing player who is a suspect defender, frequently injured and a black hole on offense should be fired immediately before he can do any more damage. (SEE: Redd, Michael; Hughes, Larry.)

  • dsleepy Posted: May.19 at 1:21 pm
@ David Emmanuelle Castillo: Gilbert is a natural 2, not a 1. And honestly, he’s out the door anyway. The future of the franchise is WALL, not Zero. We need to think long term, not short-term quick fixes like we’ve been doing for the past 3 yrs. Niq speaks the truth. TO THE WIZARDS: GET JOHN WALL OR I WILL BOYCOTT THIS TEAM FOR THE NEXT 10 YRS. I SWEAR IT

  • Dma Posted: May.19 at 1:33 pm
Ask the blazers how they feel about picking position over talent. John wall 1st.

  • Tyquan Posted: May.19 at 2:24 pm
How the hell did the Utah Jazz get the 9th pick of the draft when they played in the second round of the playoffs?

  • niQ Posted: May.19 at 3:55 pm
^It was via a New York trade. “Utah receives New York’s 2010 first-round pick (unproteced) (Tom Gugliotta trade 021904) via Phoenix (Marbury trade) Phoenix receives a 2005 New York Knicks first-round pick. (010504 Marbury trade).”

if Philly could trade away EB/SammyD i’m sure they’ll be getting a big man, if not it may be Turner. i hope they already realized that Iggy is not their “answer 2″. but i’m more hoping for the Nets to get Turner.
