Carmelo Anthony Is Weighing His Options

Carmelo Anthony took a different path than his heralded 2003 Draft classmates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade by signing a longer contract and when-actually if- he becomes a free agent next summer don’t expect the same posturing then either. As Anthony told the New York Post:

Though Knicks team president Donnie Walsh has made indications Anthony is on their radar if they fail to strike it rich this summer, the Nuggets superstar said it’s no guarantee he will be a free man come July 1, 2011. Anthony said he would consider signing a contract extension with the Nuggets in the next 12 months, saying a lot depends on the health of cancer-stricken George Karl and Denver’s ability to win.

“It’s an option,” Anthony said of an extension. “All my options are open right now.”

Anthony said he’s different than LeBron James – not curious about getting wooed and wined and dined. Carmelo has been there, done that.

James went straight from high school to the NBA, avoiding the crazed college recruitment that Anthony experienced before starring at Syracuse.

“That’s not what I’m in it for,” said Anthony, who will get married next month. “I’m not in it for the business to be recruited. I got recruited for college. I know how hectic that can be. I’m not out there looking to say I want to test the market. Whatever’s best for me and family, I’ll consider.”

Melo may not need the attention, but if the New York Knicks are looking for another savior next summer, it’ll be there whether he likes it or not.

Carmelo – next Bernard King, sans injuries?

Carmelo congratulations on a good season. To have a truly great career you must secure a really good coach and play with an outstanding young point guard.
Think seriously about the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs. Teams with a pedigree! You will never win an NBA Championship in Denver. George Karl is a really good coach, and no one led the fast break like him at UNC. Be willing to sacrifice a little (lot by ordinary standards) to achieve your ultimate goal. Good luck to you and Coach Karl …

@ Joe: He’s definitely closest to being Bernard since Bernard himself was in the league. Melo definitely isn’t as dominant though, although at times he has shown he can be. King was a straight bad @ss and would woop guys in the paint, and he was better at that; although Melo has better range on his jumper.
Who knows though, King probably could have drained threes if he wasn’t so d@mn good with his midrange/post-up game.

this is 1 of the exact reasons Melo is my favorite player.

hmm… it starts to sound to me that Melo will get a ring before Lebron… It looks to me more and more that lebron will have a barcley/malone career, no rings… I cannot see how he can get one, unless there is an uber-team built around him. Kobe-LA have 4-5 prime years. Thunder-Durant are up and coming. Miami (especially if they keep Wade and get bosh), San antonio, Mavs, Celtics, Magic, are all teams that will be contenders for the next 3 years. Most importantly they are teams with a poise. I simply cannot see how LEbron is going to get a ring.

Great answer Melo. NOw if you performance this post season against the Jazz WITH or WithOUT George Karl was any indication of your level of maturity. You have some if not a lot of work to do next season.
