Dunleavy Says Lakers ‘Need To Keep Fisher’

The L.A. Times has more from the former NBA GM and head coach: “The Lakers will have a lot of difficult decisions in the coming months, but this one is a no-brainer: They need to keep Derek Fisher…His leadership is essential, on the court and behind the scenes. His shooting is an obvious plus — he routinely makes shots in the fourth quarter that most guys not named Kobe Bryant might be hesitant to take — yet that’s just one facet of what makes him such a valuable player. Fisher has credibility in the locker room, and he’s not the kind of guy who would have a problem delivering the bad news to Kobe if, say, he’s trying to carry too much of the load himself. As a coach, you need someone who can deliver a message. Back when I was coaching the Lakers, I had that in Magic Johnson. We had a core group of guys on that team that were tremendous people and tireless workers. Magic was our best player and, like Kobe, led by example with his work ethic. Just as important was the way he helped me as a coach, just the way Fisher helps the Lakers now…The thing is, it’s pretty clear the Lakers aren’t overflowing with confidence in Farmar or Brown, or they already would have started the process of passing the torch at the position. The team needs to decide whether to go with one of those guys, or shop around and find somebody else.”

hm.. has anyone ever stepped on bear doo doo in the woods?

  • johnny c

you know what? as hard to think of as it may be, i wouldnt mind seeing shaun livingston get a chance in LA. no way should they sign felton though. say, is vujacic’s contract finally up this year?

  • Kap

I would also love to see them take Trevor Booker and Andy Rautins/ Matt Bouldin in the draft. Booker reminds me of a Artest/ Blair/ Millsap hybrid.

I’ve seen moose doo-doo in the woods here in Alaska all the time. Not no bear doo-doo. Hmm…

*meant to say “But no bear doo-doo.” Must be some elusive sh1t.

@johnny c: Vujacic has one year left at 5 mil. Means he’s a tradeable asset this year though. Morrison’s 5 mil is coming off the books though.
So we got Fish who was making 5 mil we need to get back for his leadership. Hopefully he’ll setlle for 2-3 a year. Farmar and Brown both making 1.5 – 2. Brown has a player option that I think he’ll exercise. So I say re-sign Fish, keep Brown and go after someone to replace Farmar. They mentioned Ridnour, Watson and Blake…but I’m thinking they should be going after Eddie House

Why is no one talking about the Lakers & Tmac having discussions for him to join the team???

Steve Blake will be a laker. That is my inkling. Smart, takes care of the ball, good passer, great shooter. Shaun Livingston would love to get a chance though I’m sure.

  • Shelton

Yea there’s an article, the link was under the “kobes just gettn started” in one of the comments. It seems pretty legit.

  • LD

DO NOT SIGN FISHER! You must do the exact opposite of what Mike Dumbleavy says. Why would anyone listen to the man who singlehandedly found a way to make the Clippers even worse?

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

@LD: DUnleavy got the clips to the playoffs for the first time since forever and made it to the second round. Not his fault Brand tore his achilles and then jumped ship.

Fisher stays. As for the “bench mob” Adam morrison gone, Farmar gone,Mbenga gone,Luke stays,Shannon stays,IF TMAC is willing to play for peanuts to get a chip’ then the Lakers bench would be the perfect place for him to ressurect his career/legacy as a player.(dont know if he still has it) But If Mitch could pull it off what would the Lakers have to lose, Josh Powell? One things for sure they need a point gaurd i hope its Blake. Its gonna be interesting.

  • Morgan

2 months ago this guy couldn’t guard any PG in the L and now that they have won a chip he needs to be kept on the squad?!your either on the bandwagon or your not, this guy has 5 rings and he’s been a starter for most so its a no-brainer to keep him. If you had the chance to have Robert Horry on your team would you sign him? (there is about a 50% chance RH’s team wins a ring)

  • Yesse

Ofcourse they have to keep Fish. If Fisher is available they have to get him, but if he wants to retire then respect his decision.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Other teams want him to stay so that their points guards can abuse him.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

They need to re-sign Fish because they need to keep the team leader. He may get abused by other guards and is a liability from a talent standpoint. However, the team is loaded with enough other talent and his leadership on and off the court easily offset his defensive liability. If Kobe would step up as more of a team leader (like many other superstars do) then I would say get rid of Fish, but without anybody else stepping up as a leader, the’ve got to keep him.
