Game 7 Ratings Give NBA Best Night Since 1998

And that says a lot, considering the NBA’s astronomical ratings during the ’90s. From LiveFeed: “ABC’s coverage of the NBA Finals’ climatic Game 7 gave the network the largest overnight basketball rating in 12 years. Thursday night’s Game 7 — which saw the LA Lakers defeat the Boston Celtics for the championship title — delivered an 18.2 overnight household rating, the largest since a Bulls vs. Jazz game in 1998. The face-off also marks the highest-rated NBA Finals game ever telecast on ABC, and climbing 32% from the last Game 7 to air (Pistons vs. Spurs in 2005). ABC’s Finals coverage led the network to dominate primetime for all seven nights of the series, averaging 16.4 million viewers for the first six games.”

sports on regular tv works. now let’s try boxing, maybe that’ll revive the sport

Just imagine the rating if LeBron was in the finals. I still think it should be called the LeBron James Finals MVP Award and not named after Bill Russell.

we have lebron once and i think that’s enough.

Once Kobe wins 2 more championships and 2 more finals MVP’s, he will be right up there with Jordan and LeBron.

Marley is right. We want boxing We want boxing. Boxing needs to be put on regular tv instead of that PPV crap. Also boxers are the best athletes in world. Do you know how tasking o go one round let alone 12 or 15.

Those are crazy numbers. But imagine how bigger those numbers would have been in a game 7 involving Kobe and LeBron. I don’t care if you like LeBron or not, you have to admit he’s a big draw when it comes to tv ratings (see this year’s playoffs games involving him: ratings were through the roof). If a BOS/LAL game 7 drew a 18.2 overnight rating, I have no doubt a Kobe vs. LeBron showdown would have drawn a 20+ rating, even beating the 1998 Bulls/Jazz game 6 (22+ rating).

What I don’t get IS THE rating. Is it like 18/20 rated? What does the rating mean? Can somebody explain please?

  • Adam

The trouble with a lebron vs kobe finals is that the lakers would have swept them…so there would be no game 7 to rate.

@AliG: The TV rating system is based on a share of TVs in a given sample. Here is something to help you out a little: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nielsen_ratings
