Hawks To Offer Max Contract to Joe Johnson

AJC Beat writer Michael Cunningham is reporting that the Hawks plan on offering Joe Johnson a six-year max deal (around $120 million). Good move or not for the Hawks, there’s no way Johnson could turn down this deal… could he? “When the Hawks meet with Joe Johnson in Los Angeles at the start of the free-agency negotiating period early tomorrow morning, they will offer him a six-year contract for the maximum amount allowed, according to a person with knowledge of their plans. The exact amount of maximum contracts won’t be determined until a league audit is completed over the next week, but it’s expected to total about $119 million for a player with Johnson’s experience. The other teams making pitches to Joe can only offer him five years at about $92 million. I still believe that the $27 million gap will be too much for Joe to turn down regardless of what other teams have to say about teaming up with LeBron or Bosh (or both), earning more in endorsements, or anything else not having to do with $27 million. As a Bird-rights free agent, Johnson is eligible to receive from the Hawks a six-year contract starting at about $15.8 million with maximum raises of 10.5 percent in each year (the raises are based on the first-year salary and don’t compound). Keeping in mind that the numbers are not finalized, the year-by-year breakdown of the contract would look something like this: $15.8 million in 2010-11, $17.5 million in 2011-12, $19.4 million in 2012-13, $20.8 million in 2013-14, $22.4 million in 2014-15 and $24.1 million 2015-16. Joe would be 34-years old during the final season of the deal.”

I like JJ, but he is not a Max guy

  • namik

24 mil at 34? He’s not worth that. Shoot, he’s not worth 17.5 mil at 30. This is dumb.

  • The D Train

Overpaying for a second banana and underpaying for a head coach? Classic. Mediocrity, thy name is Atlanta Hawks.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Hawks might be too late by tomorrow morning. Supposedley, the Knicks are flying out to LA to talk with Johnson at 9:01 PM local time, right after midnight NYC time.

  • AL29

Idiots! I’m speechless. He is just so obviously not worth that much. How can the Hawks be so stupid?

  • unrel

that’s a lot of money.. wow.. 120 mil?.. 6 years?.. he’s not worth that much.. this deal could kill the hawks in the long run..

  • ccantrell

paying a guy 120 million who averaged only 12 points a game in a playoff series and did nothing but help flush his team down the drain in one of the most disappointing playoff performances of the decade? wow lol.. offering jj the max is a very un-wise decision and will certainly ruin the hawks chances of potentially signing another star down the road.. jj is a very good player and not many can give u 20 5 n 5 nightly but still.. he is not one the best players in the L so he should not be paid like one.. but is more likely jus another rumor cause it is honestly very hard to imagine atl offering him 27 million more than nyc.. seriously doubt they will make this offer

  • A Mac

Save the money and play Jordan Crawford.

  • ccantrell

jordan crawford would develop nicely under jamal crawfords wing.. but without jj the hawks will more than likey not make the playoffs anyway

Some duded are seriously getting overpaid this Summer, damn!

geez…I like JJ, but he’s definitely not a max guy…

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

I think even LANG will admit that Joe is not a max guy.

No one knows whats going to happen until it happens, this summers free agency is alot like death

  • Ross

PLEASE DON’T MAX OUT JJ!! He is not a franchise player or a leader, go get a Center that can run like Dalembert from the Kings, bring Marv Williams of the bench, J-Smoov to the 3. They should build around a proven winner in Al Horford, who is 2X the leader JJ ever was.

  • LA Huey

That’s a big price tag to wallow in mediocrity.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

This is like paying $100 for a $20 bill. Who put Isiah Thomas in charge in Atlanta?

  • backboard

Dont matter if this happens or not –> I love AND hate this time of year. Excited because of big names changing teams and shaking up the L, disgusted because teams are pressured into making a move they know they are gonna regret. Whats Atlantas choice? Let JJ go? They would get mürdered by their own fans. The Hawks have to keep him at any cost, and that means shelling out the big bucks, even for a very good but not great-get-u-over-the-hump type player.

Teams are being held hostage every summer……

  • NBA kid

How will this be any different from Tracy McGrady or Jermaine O’neal’s contracts in say, 3 years?

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

  • don

i’d say: 12-15 mill for this guy. no. not 20.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

Ray Allen would put up better numbers than Joe Johnson if he played for the Hawks. Think about that.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

@NBA kid: In their prime, both players were a whole hell of a lot better.

  • jedi420

Wow, so clearly not a max type player, but the Hawks are in a tough position, pretty much the only thing they can use to keep him from bolting is bucketloads of money..

  • http://slamonline.com JL

overpaid… he’s not leaving now! plus jefferson opting out of 15 mil a year… the two dumbest moves of this free agency period so far (and it hasn’t even started yet)!

  • topo

atlanta isn’t going anywhere either way

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

for a second i thought the headline says JJ Redick .LOL

  • MikeC.

When the owners and the players’ association sit down to discuss the new CBA, and the owners complain that salaries are out of control and they can’t make money, the players’ association’s only argument should be: “We’re not the ones that offered a second-banana a franchise-killing contract.” Then they get up from the table and walk out of the room. Boom. Roasted.

  • B-E-Z

It’s obvious Joe Johnson & Gilbert Arenas have the same agent Wowwwww (Flava Flav Voice)…The hawks need more pieces even with Joe & even if he comesback your still only a 3 or 4 seed and no real ship contender. Joe doesn’t care about winning tho that’s why he left Phoenix in the 1st place.

  • NBA kid

@je, that’s a good point, this jj contract would be of Eric dampier/raef lafrentz proportions

  • rikson

He is way overrated… and now overpaid!

  • Oli

in order to keep jj, the hawks have to offer him the max. why should he stay with a team that got embarassed in the second round for the same money he could make playing with another star player?
in my opinion, the hawks should just let him go, find a solution at point guard and figure out what to do with their frontcourt. either get a center like haywood and move horford to the 4 and j-smoove to the 3 OR get rid of either j-smoove or horford.

  • Oli

btw, what’s lang’s take on this?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

ATL save your money and get Rudy Gay to replace JJ. Rudy has up and coming talent. Rudy is similar to JJ, but is more athletic. I would pay Rudy less and get a proven veteran center. Plus Jamal Crawford was the closer for the hawks, let him continue to be sixth man and put Rudy in starting lineup. BOOK IT!!!

  • LA Huey

    I like The Seed’s idea.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Who would play two guard if you replace Joe with Rudy Gay?
And a frontcourt of Gay, Josh Smith and Horford is still pretty light in the butt to contend in the East.

  • dsleepy

this reminds me of when gilbert arenas got a similar contract from the wizards…good players, but not worth max money. i think really the only players who deserve max money are the game-taking-over, cannot-beat-them SUPERSTARS: kobe, lebron, wade…that might be it honestly. durant in a few years. bosh will get the max but i don’t think he deserves it really. there is no way j.johnson is worth max.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

is it wrong for me to say that when i thought jj i immediately thought hickson before johnson?

  • http://www.hypebball.com Sam Raphael Chadwick

This is silly if they had let him go and picked up someone younger and more deserving of a max contract things might be different in Atlanta instead they are gunna overpay JJ still if Lebron goes to say new york they wont make the playofs and the only competition for the Hawks will be eiher the Bucks or Magic and possibly depending on who they sign… Chicago

  • Will Lee

this is gay, he got shut down in the playoffs, by a team that lost to Boston, who lost to the Lakers.
