Phil Jackson Tries to Fire Up Lamar Odom

by Ryne Nelson

Last Thursday, we witnessed the Celtics even the NBA Finals at 2-2. With Andrew Bynum’s knee again flaring up, and Lamar Odom filling in big minutes, the Celtics outscored the Lakers by 20 in the paint, won the battle of the boards and slowed the Laker triangle offense to stagnation.

Bynum said he should be able to play in Game 5, but no one can be sure how effective he’ll be. Hence, the Lakers desperately need Lamar Odom to play with some huevos, which as Odom admits, just isn’t his nature as a player.

Phil Jackson has gone public with displeasure — as he often does with players who need some firing up. In a L.A. Times report, Jackson essentially asks, where’s Lamar’s intensity at?

Odom had 10 points, seven rebounds and five fouls in 39 minutes, none of which did much for Jackson. The Lakers were privately concerned about Odom matching up against Kevin Garnett coming into the Finals, but they never envisioned him getting beaten by Glen “Big Baby” Davis as often as he did.

“I was thinking of an electrode, something that would really be a stimulus,” Jackson said. “He looked uncomfortable [Thursday] night and he got a couple double whammies to go against him, Garnett out there for a while and then he had Davis coming at him and things kind of snowballed on him.

“Lamar struggled two years ago in this series in this matchup, and he has to break through kind of that mental gap.”

As is often the case with naturally gifted hoopers like Odom, they fall comfortable in their position as a role player. To have much of a chance in Game 5, that’s going to have to change.

Jackson and the Lakers are desperate for LO to step up, and not play like he’s afraid to break a nail.

Keep up Lamar, Boston in 6.

without bynum, lakers look as soft as they did in 08,gasol has trouble when perk is guarding him, odom cant guard kg or big baby, frontline getting beasted physically, and backcourt outgunned by the celts, kobe cant win by himself, just as in 08, add improving rondo, and bench sparkplugs in nate and big baby

  • fizzrocket

The Lakers “formidable” frontline is kaput.

ODOM WILL GO OFF FOR 20 THE NEXT GAME…I GUARANTEE IT!

boston is winning the frontcourt, and backcourt sometimes, when ray doesnt go 0fer

Boston is just plain lucky…I think it should be a violation of the rules to have a smug f’cking leprechaun smoking hashish on your mid-court. And maybe the Celtics could win the backcourt battle if Rondo would stop wearing his headband upside down “you look like a tool rondo!” And it makes his ears look ludicrous. Seriously, isnt against the dress code to make yourself look like a hobbit?

We will not allow any team to win two in a row. The alliance is too strong. We already made Boston look better than it is. But they are soo hard working and LA is such showoffs. Well who cares, countdown to USA versus England in the worlds game…Rajon sold his soul to the dark side so its ok-dont fret my sweet D.Stern.

Without Andrew Bynum Lamer odom is going to have nightmares with KG defending him.

Yes, the dark side is strong in Rondo – Fear, Anger, Hate, ugly face…he has all the needed components.

Phil may be right on Odom because honestly, it did not weigh heavy in front of Big Baby, but we must recognize that it has done very good things
Odom is hoping for a rigouraux for tonight

  • LD

I thought 2 wins away from the championship would be enough to fire up anyone. “You only have to try hard for 2 more game Odom.”

  • SirFreshness

    LETS GO BOSTON!!!!

  • SirFreshness

And lamar odom never goes right, ever.

  • Lombu

Well Darthstern, it takes work to get lucky more than one time. The Gladstone Glander doesn’t exist in the real world, and Boston is just outworking LA. Like the last chip of the B Russel era, or 1984 chip, both times LA was the better team, but Celtics won because of their will and heart. And ohh, stop sounding like a desperate LA fan who fears the pride so much that you have to curse it again and again… Oh wait…. Relax it will be over soon enough.

  • vtrobot

as i’ve said on here before, lamar should be very familiar with handling a body the size of Davis’. he does it every night, i don’t see what the problem is during the games. @ the star wars geeks: the lakers are about to get a proton torpedo in their thermal exhaust port.

    darth stern is a G

Lamar needs a couple of braincells and USA drew with England 1-1

The David Stern aliases are too much *dead*

Can Phil fire up kobe in his interviews? lol. He has taken a stance of non responsiveness. One word answers and all. If I didn’t know better I’d say he was bitter about something but I know that’s not the case. I think it’s funny how the media seems unsure of what to ask and what his answers will be. lol. You get ‘em kobe.

Robot! Meanwhile lamar fires up and eats bags of candy

  • E. C. Griffin

Lamar Odom should be ashamed of himself. Here we are in the most important series of the NBA and this candy-swallowing, soft, gutless wonder has to be told to grow some cojones. If not at this juncture Mr. Odom, then when! Get your act together son.

  • E. C. Griffin

Will the *real* Lakers please stand up!
