Kobe Bryant: ‘I Just Got One More Than Shaq’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Throughout the entire NBA Finals, Kobe Bryant refused to acknowledge the enormity of the moment. What it would mean for him and his franchise to avenge their loss to the Celtics in the ’08 title round, what the victory would do for his own legacy.

After clinching the championship last night, Kobe finally came clean about his true feelings.

Bryant admitted that beating Boston for the ‘chip meant the world to him, and that getting his 5th title was especially sweet considering that his old nemesis, Shaquille O’Neal, only has 4.

I jotted down the quotes from the back-to-back NBA Finals MVP:

About the rivalry with the Celtics: “I was just lying to you guys. When you’re in the moment you have to suppress that because if you get caught up in the hype of it all, you don’t really play your best basketball. But I mean, you guys know what a student I am of the game. I know every series that the Lakers have played in.”

“I mean, I was just a Laker nut and I know every Celtics series, I know every statistic. It meant the world to me as well, but I couldn’t focus on that. I had to focus on playing.”

What this this title meant for him personally: “I just got one more than Shaq!” Bryant said happily. “You can take that to the bank … You guys know how I am. I don’t forget anything.”

Shaq — who told various media outlets that winning another title would make Kobe the greatest Laker ever — was quite gracious following the game, and offered warm congratulations to Bryant via Twitter.

Something tells me, though, that O’Neal will have something less than friendly to say about Kobe openly gloating about surpassing him in the ring count.

Kobe can finally take Magic out to dinner!

  • Lawrence

KOBE NEVER FORGETS…so to all haters, he’ll always find a way to shot your mouths out!!!

  • jumpman3224

Fact: When LBJ wins a regular season MVP, Kobe Bryant wins a championship and a Finals MVP 100% of the time.

  • peter

@student not fan…gasol was 0-12 in playoff games before he came to the lakers.

    that’s all.

  • JD

So Shaq tell me how my 5 rings taste!

  • http://freeones.com jbn74sb

Kobe shot horrendously. No doubt. However, he still managed to score more than a quarter of the Lakers points, grabbed 15 rebounds, turned Rondo into a piece of sh-t, and tired out Ray Allen so bad that he shot 3-14. M-f-cking-V-f-cking-P.

  • cp3fan

Fact of the matter is that Shaq doesn’t have any rings if it wasn’t for Kobe and Dwyane Wade who won that last one against Dallas by himself for Shaq. Let’s not act like Kobe was just a role player on those Laker teams. Smarten up people. People don’t like Kobe, that’s why I knew that the hate would reign down heavy today. You don’t have to like him. Can’t take away those five rings. Magic said himself that Kobe deserves a statue. That’s coming from the greatest Laker of all time. LeBron doesn’t belong in the same sentence with Kobe. If he was so good and he made his teammates so good, he would have been playing last night. Period. He better start winning championships next season or he won’t be in the conversation with Kobe when his career is over.

  • cp3fan

And if you want to talk about being a good teammate, isn’t Michael Jordan the guy who punched Steve Kerr in practice???? I haven’t heard anything like that about Kobe. Just saying…And if you want to talk about egos, doesn’t LeBron walk around in King James t-shirts all the time and refers to himself as King James??? Every superstar player has an ego. If you think that LeBron is going to play with D-Wade, think again. His ego is big enough where he wants to be the main guy on the team. He’s not going to be Scottie Pippen to D-Wade’s Jordan. Never. That’s ego. Kobe has it. LeBron has it.

  • cp3fan

    @ Papaloukas
Allen Iverson compared to Anika Kournikova…seriously? Cut your fingers off. AI actually accomplished things in the league. Scoring titles, All-Star teams, Finals appearance where he won one game against a team that was supposed to sweep them, MVP, changed the face of the league and had David Stern creating a dress code aimed at him and those who wanted to be themselves like him, icon, etc. Kournikova is a model who happens to know how to play tennis a little. Two totally different people.

  • unrel

@student not a fan.. you sound silly.. ray allen?.. yes.. he predicted it.. he’s also the guy that said.. ‘let’s not forget i was picked higher than kobe in the draft’.. dude is a hater also.. and kobe didn’t run shaq out of town.. kobe was already thinking about leaving, himself.. shaq wanted more money than they were offering.. do you not recall the ‘pay me’ screams he was making during the pre-season?.. that’s far from being a teammate.. shaq was dope.. no doubt.. but he put up a front for the media and fans.. has a likeable image.. but can’t deliver in work ethic.. weight.. pointing at his finger in phoenix.. and winning a ring for the king..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Congrats, Kobe and Lakers.

  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

Scottie Pippen is on line 1. Horace Grant is on line 2 with Dennis Rodman. Steve Kerr and John Paxon are ready to video conference in.

  • eZ

The ray-allen interview, even when critical allen remains classy. And good predictions for the period ’04 – ’07:

man, days like this make me realize I need to go through NBA rehab. Another season over… sigh….

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

LOL at all the haters!!!! I love it. The best thing besides seeing my team beat their hated rival is seeing all the Laker/Kobe haters with their panties in a bunch and making excuses. LAKERS 2010 CHAMPS BACK TO BACK!!! Gotta love the haterade going on!!!

  • Exiled Zebra

David J Stern: winning titles for lal by allowing the most lopsided trade in history. What are Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton doing now?

  • topo

i think its fair to say he should considered a top 5 player not just guard, hey remember magic said kobe will go down as the greatest laker

  • niyasofresh

Yeah I saw that and I was like that’s a middle finger to the media lol!

GO USA!!! GO USA!!!! After an epic come back that was cut short by a ref mistake we managed to get the draw against Slovenia and to hold our luck in our hands with a win against Algeria in the last game. At the same time the hated nazis lost from Serbia while the always foolishly arrogant brits (the other extremely& perenially overrated world power in football along with the nazis) managed a new draw against Algeria LOL!!!! GO USA!!!GO USA!!!!

  • http://Slamonline.com J Dizzle

LOL @ Exiled Zebra. It’s not Stern’s job to prevent lopsided trades. Blame the GM’s if you really need to blame someone. Jealousy is a b*tch ain’t it???

  • JB

What was Kobe referring to with the Shaq comment, championships, or women accusing him of r**e?

  • dino

    @NDP explain yourself?

  • Yann Blavec

The Spurs need to sign Shaq.

  • don

no kobe fan here, but yes, i think it’s okay for him to return the favor of “i got one more than you” line.

  • Rsandoval723

Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals. Both teams shot under 40 percent but Kobe Bryant is bashed for shooting bad. Kobe Bryant found another way to win; motherfucking defense. Kobe Bryant is getting double teamed and triple teamed thus giving space for his teammates yet Gasol deserves Finals MVP? You guys are ridiculous. Also, Kobe Bryant deserves those 3 rings with O’Neal! Kobe wasn’t exactly riding the pine you dumb fucks. Oh, Jordan had bums on his squad! Kobe Bryant had Odom, Artest, Gasol and Fisher. Not exactly top 50 players of all time ala Bird’s Celtics, Magic’s Lakers, and Jordan’s teammate Scottie Pippen.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Love the Karma, Shaq left Kobe in 04 thinking he was going to have much more success, Shaq can say all this nice stuff to Kobe now because he knows that Kobe is on top and if you’re a smart fan you know that Shaq is saying good things to Kobe the past couple of years because he is trying to be the good guy and hide the fact that it hurts him that Kobe had more success. Kobe loves this, he won’t forget his dark days just like MJ wouldn’t, they both hold grudges. Shaq can taste Kobe’s ass, and his 5 rings.

  • Rsandoval723

Both teams shoot under 40 percent but Kobe Bryant is bashed for shooting bad? Pau Gasol should’ve won Finals MVP when Kobe Bryant was getting doubled and tripled thus giving space to his teammates? Kobe Bryant’s team is made up of Gasol, Artest, Odom, and Fisher and that makes them stacked? Magic had Top 50 players of all time teammates on his team. So did Larry Bird! So did Jordan! Also, Kobe Bryant deserves those 3 rings he got with O’Neal! He wasn’t exactly riding the pine! Kobe Bryant is now the best Laker of all time!

  • Exiled Zebra

Jizzel, it is precisely his job to make sure things are fair. Jerry West and Chris Wallace had a hand in it too. But that “trade” was a blatant gift to the lakers, so that they could become contenders again. It is quite obvious.

  • kite

AAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHH…you idiots, tell me one guy who ever won anything on his own? You’re delusional, it has never ever happened. So many of you guys have no respect for this sport, you go way to far in your hate for Kobe. Kobe is one of the best things to happen to the NBA and most of you are way to ignorant to realise it. What a crying shame.

  • kobesBESTfriend

shaq should patch thangs up with kobe and sign back with the lakers 4 the league minimum and end his career in style with 2 more rings…i know deep down phil and kobe want him back…back were he belongs!!!

  • Sasha

I think Both Kobe & Shaq are arrogant over paid, pigs. They should both thank God for what they have and never put each other down. P.S Ron, Paul, and Fisher were the key. Kobe is just a sniper and without his foot solders he would of never won. P.S Boston is using Perkinks as an excuse for this loss. Ghetto Losers. Celtics need to get rid of all the Ghetto players and get some class..back

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

Zebra, you’re wrong. “Fair” is a subjective word. Stern had no reason to stop that trade, and you believing it is “unfair” is just jealousy at work. An obvious gift? You’re an obvious fool. If any two teams and GMs want to make a trade, it’s in their power to do so and the commish should never stop it. There would’ve been an uproar had he not allowed it in the name of “fairness.” Someone sounds jealous. “The celtics shouldn’t have been allowed to sign Garnett AND allen, that’s just not FAIR!!!” How silly does that sound? Grow up dude!

  • FHER

yes, you do Kobe ,but if it wasn’t for
Shaq you’d be missing three of those championship rings.

  • SMH

    3 words… “Gasol’s left foot”

  • Sasha

    TWO WORDS “UGLY GAME”

  • Exiled Zebra

Jizzel, name calling on the internet, you feel like a big man? Anyways, it is one of Sterns jobs to preserve parity. There was a huge uproar about that particular trade because of how lopsided it was. Another thing that cant be ignored is the fact that Jerry West was the grizzlies gm for a few years and had his lackey, Chris Wallace gift Gasol to the Lakers for their benefit. That is collusion, plain and simple. Boston traded Jeff Green and other pieces for Allen. Boston traded Jefferson, a 20 10 player, gomes, and other players and money for Garnett. If you will recall, some thought they gave up too much for Garnett. Jeff Green alone is of higher quality than everything the Lakers gave up for Gasol. I am not jealous, as I am an impartial observer. Facts are facts. The Lakers are 2010 nba champions. In an extremely shady deal Gasol went to the Lakers and they have been to the finals every year since.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Give the Lakers credit, they played well, and better yet, give Kobe his due, for he found a way to close it out even though he hadnt shot the ball well. If they keep Fisher, there is a good chance they will win it again. Kobe is getting close to the top 10 greatest in my opinion. Another title will put him in the top 5. He’s better than LeBron, and will be for another few years. Sorry.

  • The Philosopher

    ^^Kobe’s not better than LeBron.^^

  • The Philosopher

To the Mass Audience of SLAM:
Many have rejoiced AND exalted in the glory and excitement of The L.A. Lakers being newly crowned champions of the NBA, the greatest league in the entire world as we know it. Anyway, I’m just here to let the world know that… if The King was on that Laker team, that series with the Celtics would not have lasted as long as it did. (But he wasn’t, but… STILL.) Exalt, mass audience, but we ALL know the truth of the matter. LeBron is better than Kobe.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

@The Philosopher: Yes, Bron is a more talented player, but, 5 chips don’t lie man. Lebron is awesome, he really is, but Kobe is still a tad above him.

  • backboard

@spanny : please tell me you were joking in your 5:18 comment………

  • The Philosopher

I will go on to explain: The Teacher, (PAPALOUKAS) myself, AND I’m sure others have unanimously concluded that Pau Gasol IS among the greatest big men in the world of basketball today, if not THE best. Now that being said… Every championship won by the legendary Kobe Bryant has been won with a Hall of Fame big man. LeBron James cannot say the same for, The King has NEVER had a hall of fame big man in their prime on any of his teams, OR a coach with Hall of Fame credentials hence, making Kobe look better to many than… LeBron.

  • The Philosopher

In fact, Michael Jordan has ALSO never had the luxury of having a Hall of Fame big man make him look better than he was. Cartwright is NO Shaq. Put Shaq with Michael Jordan for a moment.

  • cp3fan

Every title Michael won was with a Hall of Fame player too. So what does it matter? Teams win championships, not players. Kobe was the best player on the best team. LeBron had his chance against the Celtics and look at what happened. And what exactly is LeBron the King of? Not winning. That’s what Kobe does. We can talk about what if’s all day, but none of them matter. What IS is that Kobe has five rings, two without Shaq, and LeBron better start winning soon. And very soon.

  • cp3fan

Kobe has five rings. Regardless of how much people dislike him, those are the facts. No, he won’t be MJ, but neither will anybody else. No one will be Kobe Bryant either. So let it all go. Give the man his due. When LeBron wins a few championships, then we can start talking about who’s better if we want to. But right now, who’s better doesn’t matter. I would venture to say that it is better to talk about who’s better…D-Wade or LeBron. D-Wade has a ring himself that he won almost single-handedly. Same draft class. Those are the rivals. Not Kobe and LeBron.

  • The Philosopher

^^Tim Duncan is the greatest player in NBA history, then. He won All of those rings as the lone Hall of Famer in his prime… Is Tim Duncan better than Kobe Bryant? As a matter of FACT, it is arguable that Tim Duncan IS better than Kobe Bryant depending whom one speaks with.

  • Quit hatin

Lebron had his chances but disappears in the playoffs. He cudve won against boston but d celtics D was sick. Lebron gets
outdone by howard and the magic 2 years in a row and u even wanna talk all this stuff bout being better than kobe? Kobe jus won the chip. Lebron is a beast and one hell of a player. Most powerful and athletic. He has it all except one thing that other great
players have shown throughout history. The killer instinct.. The hunger for it all. Kobe jus had a bad game in game 7 as he even admitted he was on E! He trusted his teammates and got 15 rebounds when he cudnt score. Only time he went ti the finals, was a no show and let gibson do things for him. What
team won d finals without any great player? Michael
cudnt do it without scottie.. So did magic and larry with their respective teams. Most, if not all has that type of player that gasol is to kobe now
