Image Is Everything

Kobe is uncool. That’s why he can’t be the Greatest.

by Quinn Peterson

I’ll start by saying I’m definitely a Kobe supporter. I’ve long argued that, skill-for-skill, he’s as good as Mike. If that’s untrue, the argument has certainly never held more strength than it does now. But that’s another story.

What’s in question here, is why, if that’s even semi-true, doesn’t Kobe get that same love that Mike got. Even if one doesn’t agree that Kobe is as good as Mike, he’s pretty damn close, and that alone should warrant some kind of praise. But it doesn’t. Not to the extent it should.

Instead, there’s a reluctance to accept what Kobe’s done. I’m not saying no one likes Kobe or everything he does goes unnoticed. Much to the contrary. Proof of that was recently eloquently stated on this site.

But it’s the fact there’s even a necessity to have this argument. We like to think the stats and numbers should speak for themselves, but that’s just not true. At least not in this case. Four riKobe Bryantngs, maybe five, possibly more. Three straight trips to the Finals — for the second time. All-time leading scorer in Lakers history. The list goes on. And you can add clutch shot after clutch shot to that as well. Everything that is said to determine who’s great and who’s not.

What’s interesting is that who’s great and who’s loved, however, apparently have no correlation. Not in Kobe’s case. When it comes to him those facts go in one ear and out the other for many.

It’s really pretty unfortunate. Throughout his career, no athlete of such an elite stature has committed social suicide so many times. The Black Mamba, time and time again, has put himself in the worst positions. Sometimes knowingly, sometimes just bad luck.

And it’s not merely the Colorado incident. Even before that, his chances at world domination were wary.

From day one, he’s placed himself in a line of fire like Denzel at the end of Training Day. Starting when he put those shades on the top of his head when he declared he was “taking his talent” to the League. It came off as corny, and the perceived arrogance made people hate him. As soon as he set foot in Tinsel Town he was slighted.

Since then, it’s been one event after another. And not Dennis Rodman or Ron Artest events. Not being a jerk with the media. Just flat-out lame s#@!. For instance, 2000 NBA All-Star Weekend. When Kobe decided to perform “K.O.B.E.” alongside Tyra Banks … in another language. WHAT?!

The aforementioned sexual allegation of course wasn’t a good look.

Or when the whole Shaq/Kobe drama took off and began to play itself out in public. Not only was the perception that he ran Diesel out of town, but it was later rumored that comments Kobe made around that time played a role in the demise of Shaq’s marriage.

“HE SNITCHED?!?! Aw hell naw!!!”

Ulitmate no, no. Especially since it was regarding Shaq’s wife. Nas came through and laced him with a whole verse for that one.

“From OJ to Kobe, or let’s call him Tobe, … turn around and you s#@! on Shaq?”

Then in 2007, he demanded a trade. Recently, we’ve seen “The Jaw.” Those L.A. Times Magazine photos last month. So on and so forth. Hell, even the Nike MVPuppets commercials, which feature him, have played him like a straight cornball, especially in relation to LeBron. All this adds up to an immense amount of hate and disdain for a guy who, based on his accomplishments, should be getting the Prince Akeem treatment.

Part of the problem is that Kobe, being the competitor he is, just doesn’t care, something he stated clearly back in SLAM 66: “I know what I can do individually, but right now I’ma keep winnin’ and make every single one of y’all hate my guts,” he said.

For better or worse, he’s always been all about the Ws. As long as he wins, he doesn’t care. That’s how it should be. But it’s America, things can’t just be that easy.

As a “basketball head to the bone,” as Bryan Crawford put it, I can confidently say I’ve been able to overlook these incidents, only worrying about what’s going on the hardwood.

More generally though, the result has been that, no matter what he does or who he tries to please, people still hate. This is one of the most accomplished players EVER in the history of the game. He should have the whole world eating from his hand the way Mike did. But he doesn’t. Why?

How can he successfully emulate Mike’s every move, and, more importantly, back it up with hardwood, but not feel the same love? The answer is actually quite simple: He’s not cool. Period. And that’s the major issue.

“He’s a square,” people say. Men and women, across the world, all bring themselves to hate the Black Mamba. And it has absolutely nothing to do with what’s going on on the court, per se.

Mike was, hands down the coolest, smoothest cat doin’ it. Straight up. Kobe’s not… at all. Bryant had a failed rap attempt; MJ had one of the most ubiquitous and memorable jingles of all time made hailing to His Airness. They never even mentioned the actual product, Gatorade.

That’s where the dilemma is. That’s why people have become so infatuated with King James but not KB24. Keep it 100, LeBron is cool as hell. Stays fresh, calmly chops it up with Hov on the sidelines during the game, makes appearances in clubs and at hip-hop concerts, etc. That’s why, despite his shortcomings in the Playoffs, he’s managed to stay ahead of Kobe in the minds of many. He’s cool, that’s really all it comes down to.

That’s the difference between being great, like Kobe, and being an icon, like Jordan. Cats wanted to be Jordan on and off the court. He was cool. He was cooler than cool. He was ice cold. This guy just looks cooler than this one, plain and simple. That’s all it takes.

I guess we should really be inspecting America in this particular discussion, because abroad, specifically in China, Kobe is that dude. Over here though, image is everything. It doesn’t matter what you’re output is, if you don’t look a certain way doing it, it means nothing in the eyes of the public. It’s a harsh, but true, reality. Welcome to Pop Culture, USA.

That’s certainly not a groundbreaking fact; however, it is one that has become all the more clear as Kobe has continued to wow us by draining shots with guys damn near stitched onto his uniform, but the willingness to finally suck it up and salute the man has remained just as challenging for some of his detractors.

Given everything he’s done, it should be a no-brainer of how dope he is. Yet the need to defend what should really speak for itself, shows it’s clearly not. And even if (when?) Kobe gets his fifth ring in these next few weeks, the need to defend him will still remain. I’ll be one of those defenders, no doubt, but it’s ashamed that it’s even necessary.

I could care less how “cool” an NBA player is. I just watch the games, and I tell you what, winning championships is pretty cool.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Kobe has been playing in he NBA since he was 17.
    He’s 31 now.
If you take away the first five years of his life, and who can really remember those first five years clearly, Kobe has been in the NBA longer than he’s done anything else in life.
    That’s kind of scary.

I appreciate this forum (and SLAM) to freely express our p.o.v’s, but I am disappointed that someone took the time to write an article on wether or not Kobe Bryant was as “cool” as Michael Jordan (or Lebron or Dwayne Schintzius or Rony Seikaly). No disrespect to Quinn and his opinion or the rest of you guys, but this is the kind of stuff that keeps us as a society from moving forward. I come here to read quality basketball material, if I wanted to chat about who is cooler I’d log onto tmz or a forum over at seventeen magazine.

Awesome article. The thing with MJ is that he TRANSCENDED the sport of basketball. You can’t say that about Kobe. I think that’s the difference between the two and why in general, MJ will always be viewed as the better of the two even though their basketball talents/achievements may be similar.

  • chingy

@KH: there are articles solely about bball, so just click on the link at the top of the article

  • The Philosopher

In my humble opinion, I think that everyone has a ‘cool’ about them somewhere within them. It, to me, depends on who or what is judging what is ‘cool’. Now, the person who could be considered ‘cool’(by whomever judges what’s cool) may certainly have some ‘un cool’ tendencies. It’s all about the entity that is judging ‘cool’, I think.

  • The Philosopher

To touch on Kobe supposedly not being cool, to many of the gentiles he IS cool. I personally think Kobe’s cool too, but I don’t know him, so…
Now, I think a large part of the masses don’t think he is cool. One can argue that Kobe isn’t original, he can come off as a copycat to some. To many people, if your style isn’t your own, (which Kobe’s isn’t) than you may not be cool to them. A lot of what society perceives as ‘cool’ comes from the originality of a person, in my opinion.

“…men and women, across the world, all bring themselves to hate the Black Mamba. And it has absolutely nothing to do with what’s going on on the court, per se.” <<<<

  • barnabusb

I saw a thing on TV about all the ballers Tyra Banks banged back in the day. Did she also get Kobe?

  • barnabusb

Also, the biggest difference between Kobe and Michael is the internet. MJ didn’t have bloggers reporting on his gambling or snapping cell phone pics of him with other women in the 80′s and 90′s. We were spoon fed what Nike and the NBA wanted us to know about Jordan because we couldn’t get the info any other way. Kobe has to keep it on the down low, and it’s more interesting that way in our 24/7 interwebz environment.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

great great article, but wasn’t Allen Iverson the guy that was the coolest after Mike? I mean who didnt like his style at one point.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

THIS IS A BUNCH OF CRAP. The reasons kobe isnt revered like mike are obvious and simple. 1. He isnt as good as mike, not even as close as many, mostly la fans, would try to have you believe. And 2. That threepeat was shaqs, dont get it twisted. Kobe was the sidekick and did some important things, but those were shaqs, as evidenced by finals mvps. All of kobes corny stuff doesnt come into play when discussing why he isnt as revered as mike, but it is funny. Ppl , again mostly la fans, say kobe has 4 rings and might get another. Id say he has 2.5 rings. Saying kobe won those first three is ignorant. If he had won those as the obvious main guy, it would be different. If he hadnt froze out shaq in 04 finals, it might be different. That, to me, is the most absurd thing kobe has ever done, how the hell do u freeze out ur teams best player and just go for dolo? And if bean is so great, how come he couldnt do anything with bostons d in 08? Kobes legacy is overrated, pumped up by fanboys. Not enough credit is given to shaq for ‘kobes’ titles.

  • Atrain

Kobe is like A Rod…tries to hard to be cool. And real recognize real…

And as far as MJ, he not as cool as everyone think. He came off country bumpkin style at his HOF speech for real

  • JP

hate is not cool, neither is jealousy. I’m sure a lot of people here would think Kobe is super cool if he was playing for the team they root for.

By the way I’m tired of the “it was Shaq team in 00,01,02″ argument. It’s for stupid people who doesn’t know anything about basketball and doesn’t even watch the games.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

The way he just tries too hard to get everybody to accept Kobe’s great-/coolness I am starting to wonder if ‘The Seed’ is actually Kobe himself? On another note; Chris Childs was real cool.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Kobe is actually very cool. I mean seriously, how many NBA players do you know that takes a helicopter to their home games? Only one…

  • Jesse Dunns Ghost

Kobe=contrived (although he is my fav player in the L right now)
MJ (may my spit be upon him)=cool

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Jp, ‘stupid people who doesnt know anything’, huh?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I did write to much the first time, but when writers say someone is uncool and the other two cats are cool, don’t you want facts, because thats a well writen article to me. This was a uncool article for probably an uncool dude, who needed to generate some comments to his name and I am buying into it. Man WHAT IS AMERICA COMING TOO?

  • http://www.nba.com That Dude

Nice article Quinn. You’re right about Kobe being that dude in china – but not because they appreciate the talent and aren’t as pop culture driven as the USA. They THINK Kobe is cool – to them he’s another cool black baller from the US. They don’t know about ‘urban’ culture to the extent of Americans and NBA players are sport stars, not pop cultural icons as they are to Americans.

  • Sarah

I think it’s not so much the “cool” as it is the “being yourself.” I mean, I’m a Tim Duncan fan and you can’t really argue that he’s “cool.” But he is what he is. He doesn’t feel the need to pretend to be anything else. Maybe Kobe’s not pretending either, but it does feel that way a lot. Anyway, like I say, I think I’ve finally made my peace with that and it’s frankly hard not to appreciate his work ethic and play. There are no words for the shots he hits over perfect defense like at the end of game 6 in phx (and countless other times). In the end, you kinda have to give your respect to that.

  • The Philosopher

Tim Duncan is one of the coolest players in NBA history…to me.

  • REAL TALK

Another article hating on KOBE lol tryna get fans & attention……..EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!!!! The hate shows how Kobe is the best lol

  • NY

LOL youngsters don’t know sh!t alot of people hated Jordan

  • http://freshnproper.com Q

@real talk: not sure if you actually read the article, but it’s not hating on Kobe..at all. See first paragraph. And the last one.

  • Sarah

@ The Philosopher: I’d have to agree with you, but we might be alone in that. I don’t think he fits most people’s definition of cool.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

I will agree what this article has to say about Kobe, but not what it has to say about Lebron. Both of these guys are uncool. Or, to put it more accurately, they lacked what Mike had in abundance during his heyday: Class. That’s it, Mike had class, neither of the two of today’s greatest have it. Man, I can’t wait for Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose to finally come into their own and start killing this league. Then maybe we can finally have superstars deserving of the throne that MJ’s left vacant, and still is to this day.

  • Slam_Reader

I think Eboy or WTF is your name and alot of people alike are just mentally insane and obviously have many serious complexes!!!

  • e

i dont understand people saying kobe plays like a euro and doesnt have the power in the lane like lbj and jordan smh yall mustve forget his vicious dunkd of the past

  • e

oh yeah and that hof speech spoke volumes about mike as a person seemed really bitter

  • Ronald

@Melvin Ely: MJ was a much bigger douche than Lebron or Kobe. It was a well documented fact and probably one of the reasons he was so successful.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

I just can’t see Kobe having ever been the ‘coolest guy in school’ label on his back. John Salley probably didn’t either but we know how he rolls nowadays.

  • C.B

    @Charita Batiste
Kobe doesn’t play with arogance anymore…u clearly dont pay attention bro. I would say now he’s playing good, and he’s sharin the ball and everythin.

  • The Philosopher

    @Sarah: You’re probably right.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

great piece…LBJ looks lame as sh1t A LOT, like tonigh on Jimmy Kimmel…about Bean, yeah, lots of good points but maybe not fair to compare anyone to MJ, on the hardwood hes close, not ever there, witch is a complement by the way…off court I think I see it as a kid trying to be supercool, bad thing but excusable for a 20 smthing…now I actually like him as a person, a man trying to be really great and acomplish as much as he can so people compare him to his idol…he tried to be gangsta and all that buts hes a midlle class kid, not very sociable, who tryed to fit in, he got that with his game on the floor, of off it you just have to understand where he came from..not ice cold cool like MJ, that should make him more relatable to normal people but haters gonna hate, and he most defenetly has done some things to prove them right, not me,i think he was a goofball trying to be this´n´that to earn respect…but only the on court accomplishments and his true caracther(unsociable) earn mine.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

I´M ALLWAYS BUSTING THE PHILOSOPHER´S BALLS FOR HIS LOVE OFF LEBRON BUT I HAVE TO TOTALLY AGREE, the defenition of cool is somewhat fu/ked up, to me THE GREAT TIMMY IS AS COOL AS THEY COME for example…i dont know if many people see him as such

  • The Philosopher

I think more of the public would allow him more ‘cool points’ if he could decide who or what he wants to be. Forget about basketball for a minute. If one day you’re Michael Jordan, but the next day you’re Allen Iverson… I mean, are you both? You can’t be both. For one, you have to be yourself. Kobe doesn’t seem to ever want to be himself, for he always seems to be trying to be someone else. But, he has seemed to show more of “himself” since he got the ring without Shaq. Just my opinion, though.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Allep with some insighfull stuff on his first comment

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Allenp. and we agree again Philosopher

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@melvin ely: MJ hof speech was the DEFENITION OFF CLASSELESS, get a clue…and dont put DRose where he doesnt belong, CP3, DWill, BRoy, Melo, etc are here for stayin, Durant is allready the heir apparent…Rose is with Russ Westbrook right now.

  • jumpman3224

Jordan was a one time only level icon. He had crazy broad appeal, was a phenomial athlete and brought a team out of obscurity to deliver 6 titles. When I think of Jordan as cool, I’m picturing the shrug game or the shot over Russel, not that he doesn’t have a bacon neck or Space Jam. To me cool is what gets done on the court and what goes into preparing one’s self to get things done on the court. With that as the rule, Kobe is the coolest guy doing it today. Anyone could take a given player and interupt different things into him being lame (ie LBJ – Dunkgate, “Check My Stats”). Also – side note I think history romanticizes players careers. So while seemingly half of fans today “hate” Kobe…he will still go down as a top-5 all timer and history will forget the hate.

  • http://kamndestiny@yahoo.com swisha sweet

kobe, lebron magic, bird, whoever u want to compare to m.j. is impossible. Hes done something that none of these guys have. Never lost in the finals. thats greatness. these guys are/were all great but mj is the f-n greatest and lets leave it at that.

  • jordan

that’s not the case for a while the experts tried to pass kobe off as the next mike and he didn’t have the game. shaq carried those 3 lakers championship teams. when he first came into the league he was a good player but the last 8 or 9 years he has turned himself into a great player.

This whole article is true because Kobe doesn’t seem to worry about totally meaningless things like his so-called “image”. He focuses on being the best at what he does. And not on trying to be a billionaire. :)
