Lakers vs Celtics: Game 7 is Here

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Well, here we are.

History is at our doorstep. And it’s time to let it in.

Or something to that effect.

Twelve hours from now, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics will square off in the last possible game of the NBA season, and one of these teams will be crowned as this year’s champion.

It couldn’t have been scripted any better.

Both squads are very confident heading into the matchup; Glen Davis more or less guaranteed a victory for the C’s, and according to Jordan Farmar, Kobe Bryant assured his teammates following Game 5 that the Lakers were going to win two in a row at home and the title.

The time for tired story lines, subplots and clichés has come and gone. It’s time for the two best teams in the L to do battle for the ultimate prize.

I can’t wait for tonight’s game, and strongly suspect that all of you feel the same.

As a fan of the NBA I couldn’t ask for anything more than a game 7 to cap off the season. As a Laker and Kobe fan I can’t wait to celebrate tonight! Lakers by 12

  • gghhh

it’ll be 3.00am when the game starts. we are real fanatics

  • http://www.hbo.com/the-wire/index.html jasondolemite

Damn, so great to see the global support of the NBA!

  • James

I’ll be watching in Holland too:p

  • KulchaKris

Can the Celtics win without a good game from either of KG, Pierce, Ray Allen, or Rondo? Yes. Can the Lakers win without a good game from Kobe? No. That said, I see Kobe posting a near triple double in a close, hard fought win. Lakers by 4.

  • vtrobot

losing perk is huge. C’s were getting killed by size early in the series. who the f*ck isn’t guaranteeing a victory? doubters will contribute to their team’s loss. baby has a huge role to play. good luck to both teams. very entertaining season. refs, please behave tonight.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

This game 7 does not have the feel of a true game 7. That is because neither of these teams has really played well consistently in this series. Whoever wins tonight will win in a blowout.

Although these playoffs havent been the best, the finals
really made up for it and it couldn’t have ended any better
with the Lakers taking it at at home… whoops I guess i jumped the gun a bit too early. anyways cant wait for July 1st

  • The Philosopher

It’s my first season up here on these threads, and I want to thank all of the commenters up here for keeping me on my toes. I thought I knew the game better than a lot people before I got up here. I’ve learned some things, I’ve taught some things. I’m most thankful to the great SLAM for affording the mass audience to congregate amongst each other to discuss not only basketball, but a wide range of different topics. Peace be unto all, and again SLAM, thank you.

  • http://www.acb.com Alan

Hope Gasol has a good game,’cause I’ll be cheering him from Spain (3:00 AM too) and have to wake up to work at 7:00 AM… Go Lakers!!! Also, Kobe for MVP!!!

  • jumpman3224

@Philosopher: Welcome! Glad you enjoyed game one.
@Various World Wide Commenters: Props on your die-hard support. I thought it was rough following a West Coast team on the East Coast.

It’ll be 9:00 AM tomorrow here in the Philippines! It’s going to be crazy. We have lots of viewing parties all over the metro to watch Game 7 togerther with friends and families and foes! Go Celtics!!!

  • jumpman3224

Go Lakers! As much as they need greatness from Mamba, they need everyone else to show up and do their job. For Gasol that means controlling the inside, scoring in the paint and getting rebounds. For Artest that means D’ing up Pierce and hitting open shots. For Farmar/Brown/Sasha that means providing energy and being aggressive offensively. Fish had a good quote that the Lakers can’t just show up and ask Kobe to wear their jerseys too. Should be an extremely exciting (and stressful) game.

  • jumpman3224

    *Glad you enjoyed year one!

  • Kap

I just moved to a new town because I’m an intern but thanks to SLAM I’ve been able to kill time between studying and here @ hospital so I’m new to the threads but its been cool debating and talking about basketball with people who actually have great knowledge on the topic. Thanks and Go Lakers.

  • The Philosopher

I’m pulling for The Lakers, for they’re my all time team. I love Kobe, I love Phil. But, in my opinion, if we see the Game 2 version of Rajon Rondo, I truly believe The Celtics will be crowned NBA Champions.

  • Kap

@ Philosopher…So if it were Cavs/Lakers who would you root for?

  • The Philosopher

@Kap: I would pull for The King. I like Lebron better than I like Kobe.

  • Kap

@ philosopher: In greek mythology, Kings were the Gods b**ches. The same is true in NBA when referring to Lebron & Kobe.

  • The Philosopher

    Greek mythology was… mythology, right?

  • Sly

@ 3am as well in France but no way I miss this epic game! Go Lakers!!

Thor was real. They’re making a movie about him so he’s gotta be real.

    Go Joey Crawford!

  • mister8

Watching live from Amsterdam, like all the finals games, I really enjoyed this battle, but I’ll be glad when it’s over, I need some sleep yo.

  • http://twitter.com/flavaklav Klav

Stern got what he wanted, he milked all he could out of this Finals series since he couldn’t get the LBJ vs KB Finals like last year. #FAIL. Forreal, this don’t feel like a game 7 with inconsistency. GL to the C’s fans, and Lakers Nation lets get loud!!!!

  • http://www.sovainmag.com Sovainmag.com

Boston will choke and I guarantee it. There not losing much physically with Davis and Wallace filling the void of Perkins, but mentally, I believe Boston is distraught and it will affect there performance. I saw the big baby interview yesterday and it was evident he was affected by it.

  • Stillballin

I’ll be watching it in Hawaii.. That’s in the pacific.. Hehe..go celtics!!

  • underdog

I’m still considering to wake up at 3:00…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

KG will have to step up tonight if they want to take this one. Rondo might want to take some jumpers as well because I’m pretty sure LA will still give him as much room as he wants. Perkins got boards and as everyone saw in game 6, the Celtics struggled getting boards without him. Something is telling me Kobe is in his room now in the zone for tonight.

  • JD

    Beat L.A!Beat L.A!

  • j.b

yup. 3 am it is for me as well.

  • http://freeones.com jbn74sb

Such a huge moment for both teams and for all the key players. Regardless of what anyone says, if the Lakers win tonight, Kobe gets another Finals MVP, further cementing his legacy. And for the second year in a row, career loser LeBron James has his regular season MVP and Check My Stats t-shirt to go with his back-to-back regular season champ titles. I don’t even want to think what a loss to the Celtics will mean – I’m sure eboy will have something to say about that. Only one thing is certain: at 7:00 tonight (smart people don’t watch live TV), I’ll be screaming at the TV. I don’t know about fun, but it sure will be exciting.

  • gc

2 am for me from uk

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Will be 22 Hrs here in São Paulo, Brasil (yes, with an ‘s’). Will be watching this mouthwatering encounter. Before the series I said C’s in 7, so gotta stick with that. The loss of Perk hurts, but PP, RayRay and Rondo will be gunning. Gasol is the key for LA, hope he chokes on some bad paella. Go Irish!

  • BostonBaller

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

This is a throwback game on soo many levels, I’m glad the seeds get to c what it was like virtually thruought the golden era of the NBA in the 80′s. When you had Legendary teams like the Dr J/ Malone Sixers, a young Michael Jordan & the Bulls, the “bad boys” from Detroit, the Larry bird era C’s, and of course “showtime”. These teams are both stacked with great players, several future hall of famers, and two of the best coaches on the sidelines. Young cats have a game, a series, they can look back on and know they were a part of something historic to the game. I’m watching this one with my little newborn son, just a few days old. I’m just gratefull we still have guys like KG, Fisher, Pierce & Kobe who thru thier fierce drive, work ethic and determination keep the traditon of greatness alive in the NBA. Here’s to a great series, And rivalry. Lakers for Revenge and the title!

  • Irfan

3 am here too, from France. But that’s a game 7! I hope it’ll be a very nice and close game, like +6 LA at the end of the 3rd, and then +10 with 2:00 remaining, then 3 threes from Ray Allen… and a big rebound for Gasol followed by a 2+1 or 3 the normal way by Kobe with 30 seconds remaining, in order to avoid too many heartfailures.
    Please bring me that!
Or a Scalabrine buzzer beater would be nice too =).

    GO LA!!

  • Nick the Quick

Slam is definitely hoppin tonight/today (whatever time zone you’re in. It’ll 8pm Central here in the cornfields of Iowa. Go Lakers!!( SlamadaFinals: The Machine on KG!)

  • Irfan

By the way if Celtics win -God (or Kobe, or Marianne) forbis- who can be their Finals MVP? I don’t see anybody else but Doc Rivers or Kobe Bryant, the two only very good guys for the entire series. Kobe was just a little under his average for this Finals in game 4 but he’s been brilliant in all the others. Rondo has not had a stunning performance and doesn’t have good overall numbers (see FT%, 23,5); KG and PP were shadows in the first games; Ray Allen had two good games.

  • The Philosopher

@BostonBaller: That sounds like a plan. I’ll be in Boston before long. Big shout out.

  • BostonBaller

@Negativekreep, I’m loving this series and even though it’s not quite 80′s it’s as close as we can get. you were right on point with those teams you mentioned then there were the teams that literally scared those teams to death. The Bucks with Moncrief, Johnson Sikma, Lanier and company. The Hawks w/ Dom, Doc and a host of crazy athletes, even the Knicks provided excitement featuring The True King..Bernard. The West was wilder than it is now. Man I miss those days but this game will make me forget about them for a while. All phones will be off, the internet put to sleep, the door bell disconnected and the house off limits so I can watch and go nuts for a few hours. have fun folks, I’m out. GREEN for 18….

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    What a great series.

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

It was well worth staying awake for. For the love of basketball… Nice to see Bill Russell, Kareem, Magic and Kobe and Pau with a Larry’O. Now get some sleep everybody. Good luck to the Celtics to keep the team together next season and be a contender. Peace y’all

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

Shout out to Bostonballer, yo I know ur hurting right now. I know exactly how u feel. I wish that feelng on noone. Soo much passion on both sides…This is STILL the greatest rivalry in all of sports and tonight proves it. The tradition, (onboth sides) the legacies, the hatred, the respect. It wouldn’t b one without the other. Ying and yang. Don’t really know what else to say, just blessed & thankfull for the greatest free entertainment the common man can afford. Just grateful to be alive, to enjoy this greatest of games & my lifes passion the game of basketball.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Well said Negetivekreep… The bittersweet ending to every Finals leaves an empty feeling after when there’s 3 months of basketball withdrawal…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

Congrats to my homies in Laker Nation, job well done. Congratulations to the C’s and their fans for a great run and series. Hope everybody is age. New era of C’s vs LA is 1-1. Let’s see if we can make it happen again next year. Next up, Draft Day and FA. This should be good. Enjoy summer guys!
